I loved what Steve Smith had to say about him. " If I lined up in the slot, he lined up in the slot. If I lined up as a running back, he lined up as a linebacker. If I parked my car in the parking lot, he was the parking attendant. Champ Bailey lined up everywhere.”
Champ came into the league in 1999. Darrell Green had been with the Redskins his entire career before calling it quits after the 2002 season. Deion joined Green and Bailey for one season in 2000 and then retired in 2001. Deion came out of retirement to play for the Ravens in 2004 and 2005 but then called it quits for good shortly after the 05 season
It's probably a good thing for everyone else that Deion was hurt most of his time on the Redskins. With Champ, Deion, or Green on opposite sides of the field where are you supposed to throw?
Kyle Adrien they were still better than about 90 percent of the league. Those guys may have lost a step, but Green and Deion were always a step or two faster than everyone else for the majority of their career. Even if they lost a little speed along the way, they had plenty of speed left in the tank!
The best and most complete corner that I've ever seen. Athletic ability, physicality, aggressiveness, tackling ability, concentration, feel for the game, reading the game, preparedness, technique, you name it, he had everything a corner needs to have at an incredibly high level. He even had great hands, too! He was a cheat code!
This reel didn't even show how great he was and shutting down screen passes. He would split two or three blockers and upend the ball carrier. He's the 2nd best coverage db of all time but the best one never tackled anybody and this Champ was also the best tackling corner ever (since they made how Night train tackled illegal)
I'll argue with anyone until im blue in the face that Champ at his best is the best corner to ever do it. 05-06 is almost incomprehensible how good he was, 18 picks in 2 seasons with the small amount of targets.. got robbed of DPOY and would have had so many more interceptions if he had decent corners playing opposite of him QBs simply just quit throwing it anywhere near him
average joe beer show not sure your comparing bailey to Asante with your comment but Bailey is wayyyy better. Longer prime and wayy better peak. Asante was never considered the best corner during his time while bailey was the best corner for a good period of his career.
Bailey was not unique - even; if not ESPECIALLY - in Washington; Bailey had an heir apparent when Denver pilfered him; Brian Davis. What all three cornerbacks had in common was the same defensive backfield coach (later defensive coordinator, and eventually head coach) - Richie Pettibon. Over his entire pre-head coach tenure with Washington, he didn't JUST turn out defensive backs that could cover like Alfredo sauce on pasta, he could crank out defensive backs (especially safeties) that coud punish - and - more than once, the SAME back could do both. Look at the Washington defensive backfield before Champ got drafted, and after he got pilfered by the Broncos - and while Pettibon was growing defensive backs in his garden.
Joshua Mitchell I really don’t like agreeing with you, I don’t think champ had the same cover skills but as a pure CB he at least could tackle and was morewell rounded than Deion..
Him not winning the 2006 defensive player of the year was one of the biggest robberies in history. Stats wise he allowed 4 receptions no tds had 10 picks and 2 tds. Those numbers were insane.
