- I had the honour of being invited by Triumph to the launch of two brand new motorcycles at the Bike Shed in London. In this video we take a closer look at the Bonneville Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400x, two new editions to Triumphs modern classic line up.
I discuss some key features and specs that are unique to this bike like the new 398cc single cylinder engine and the size and feel of the new chassis. I cannot wait to review these motorbikes and see what they are like for myself. What a perfect bike for beginners/ A2 license holders, or for a second bike for a bit of fun!

The scrambler in khaki green looks lovely
Speed 400 looks great, hoping this starts the trend in premium smaller capacity bikes its been a long wait.
Wish they brought a speed twin 500 with 270 degree 42ps,47nm it would have been perfect
Nit picking,.. 😂
*CRAP GAME* 🎉
I am just so happy you got to produce one of the first intro videos! That tells me the industry is taking you seriously. Very well done chaps! I hope the 400 is not too small for 6'-2'' 200lb riders!
Yes maybe for the more petit rider or young riders. The benneli 800 scrambler leoncino is probably nicer and similar class but triumph most likely have a better dealership network in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧
The 400X is longer and taller than the Speed 400 with longer travel, bigger front wheel. It's not a small bike.
@@mark.e.p they both remind me of the trident 600 which is a relatively smaller bike like the Honda CB600 or 1000 whatever it is compared to some of the other bikes I have seen. Mind you I have a small sportive bicycle and it is very nippy around town so I am in no means knocking it
It looks great. Speaking as a Speed Twin 1200 owner the Speed looks interesting, the Scrambler looks brill too but too high for an old stiff pensioner. I reckon they will clean up with these two.
Two great looking bikes. Nice light weight, 40hp is good for a 400 single. Look forward to trying one, could be my next bike in khaki green. Well done Triumph.
Absolutely agree, can’t wait to try it!
Triumph produced another great looking bike, in my opinion. The price will be interesting to see but I believe it will be a great seller if the price hits the mark.
I may delay purchasing my first bike and wait for one of these
They both look great! Can't wait for your review 😀
Sounds obvious, but the price will be key. I am a massive RE fan, owning an Interceptor 650 and Classic 350. I really like the HNTR 350, and this is what these two new 400’s are aiming at. The HNTR is about £3500-£3700 plus otr. The Triumph’s won’t be close, probably nearer to £5000, but when you look at the complete package, then things start to get tempting. With a 10k miles / 12 month service interval for a kick off, and no mention of valve clearance checks etc. I am sure I won’t be the only one to have a good look at these. For me, the Scrambler looks the coolest.
I would imagine around £6000/6500 direct rival to the Honda CL500 at £5999, but with it being a Triumph it would not surprise me if it was £7000+
@@macaulayholgate1086 well, they will miss a trick then. Plenty of bigger, better options at that. Time will tell 😉
I guess it would fall more into the KTM 390 and Husqvarna 401 range as all three are manufactured in India by Bajaj motorcycles and I guess have the same motor...engine specs are the same..just hope the low down torque is tweeked well unlike the KTM390
@blrmotorcyclesinc. Max power is at 8k and it's around 7hp down on the ktm 390 so should be better low down in the rpm range. Definitely a plus for me. I don't want to have to rev to 9.5k+ to get the power on the spec sheet.
@@blrmotorcyclesinc. This engine apparently has nothing to do with KTM or Bajaj's existing engines.
Great review Mr Darcy, excellent content.
Love that Scrambler in Green! Well done Triumph!
RE has made some huge progress in the last few years and the success of the Scram 411 among just a few in the lineup upset the apple cart. Over here being one of the few manufacturers not seemingly affected by market distribution concerns. The RE has triggered the push for triumph to get more realistic with a more diverse range. Now with this two new models variants we might actually get a great result. If the power is on par with a KTM Duke and Duke ADV in a retro modern style then I feel it will sell incredibly well.
Can't help but think Triumph are on to a winner with these machines in a segment Triumph has not been in before.
In my reckoning the power to weight ratio betters the RE 650s .
Agreed. But then Enfields are air cooled
I see you point of view
But imo the Enfields dont try to compete on performance and never have .
They sell on simplicity and no gadgets/modes for which there is a huge interest in at the moment.
Getting back to basic smaller capacity bikes under 650 for many riders is tempting them to buy real retros.
These Triumphs look pretty basic to me in 2023.
Triumph should have made the design a little more unique. If these looked like cafe racers, they would sell like crazy.
@@nerychristian yes but I'm thinking other variations may come along later like the Bonneville range has.
They are both great looking bikes. From what I've seen so far I think I would lean towards the scrambler as it has more footpeg to seat distance. Can't wait till they hit the US.
I really like the speed 400, two tone paint job looks great, love that Triumph are giving the lower cc market some premium options, thanks for bringing this news so fast Darcy 👏
I personally like the speed 400, already having a 390 looks like a nice option for a second bike, looks absolutely class
This is my dream, around 500cc, not to expensive to buy or live with to roll around town and cruise some twisty roads outside the city.
Nothing much for me, however, I'm eagerly looking forward to your and/or Ol'Man's ride and subsequent review of these bikes👍
I've been hoping for a big single from Triumph for years. I'd hoped for more cc displacement, and a more retro appearance. I think this one will sell like hotcakes.
True. I would have preferred a cafe racer style.
Yes, 500cc would have been the sweetspot. 400 is just a little too small...
i wonder if they gonna rust like the 900 and 1200cc model
They are coming out with 450cc bikes next year. I can only assume the baby bonneville will be one of those.
@@jedw9983 400cc for single-cylinder engine is already too much. For this much displacement, usually you see twin-cylinder engines (unless you want any moto-cross bikes 🙂)
Looks like great fun!👏👏👏👏
Thanks for a great video I have just registered my Interest In the Triumph 400 I love it this morning I have been to my local Triumph Dealership in East Sussex
Well done on getting the video out so soon 😀. Think they'll be a sucess for triumph as long as they launch it at a competitive price! It's not really a surprise that India are getting them first, seen as that's where there being made 🤔look forward to seeing your review when you get chance to ride it 😀
Thanks for the update, both very nice looking bike s I'll take the scrambler
I might seriously go for one of these as my first bike
Congratulations on your invite to the intro of these bikes. Your channel has serious credibility.
I want to Congratulate🎉 to Triumph Motorcycles Manufacturing company and the Team involved in designing and Developing and Manufacturing such a beautiful Champion 400CC Scrambler motorcycles.I liked your video Dear Darcy🎉
These are the bikes most of us will be riding, first time and experienced riders. Manufacturers like Triumph and Enfield will be turning out these bikes for riders wanting to save on insurance, registration and servicing costs. The performance is perfectly adequate around town and for day rides. If I got one I’d add a top box.
I want a 400 Scrambler and will very likely buy one when they hit the USA
Nice looking bikes, should sell well, would make for a great second smaller bike for me.
Lovely design, wouldn’t mind having one !
I predict the 400 scrambler will become the old man's favourite back road bike.
Very nice looking bikes, decent power and nice& light. Excellent!
They do look quite nice indeed😃
Single cylinder, so should be fun and characterful. I think I prefer the Scrambler, too. I like the cat.
Old username: 1990 [Nick J]
Look like really nice bikes. I wonder if triumph would consider making a tiger 400 in the future? Not very many lightweight adventure bikes out there, would make off road/Greenlining much more doable, whilst also very useable on the road.
That would be a good call from Triumph!
There's a new Enfield Himalayan coming out this year with a liquid-cooled engine.
I agree. I have a Tiger 800 but would love to get on a Tiger 400 as a beginner off road rider.
I’ve just bought a Tiger 1200 (in love!) but would love to see a 400 it’d be amazing
.... and well done for getting the early scoop ❤
Another excellent video thank you Darcy. I think these 2 Triumph 400's will do very well but maybe a bit pricey. The 3 Royal Enfield 350's will be better value so, it comes down to if you need the extra HP or happy with the power you get from them. I am in the Royal Enfield camp as they are all excellent valve for money bikes and it's the way they make you feel when you ride them.
Completely agree...Royal Enfields are more authentic and honest motorcycles...these could be just a KTM 390 in a new package...i really hope not....only time will tell.
Can't wait for them to come to the states
I was going to purchase a 900 Scrambler next year, but this might be a better fit for an old guy, that’s just running the back roads, and an occasional trip to another town.
I am 64. Bought the 900 Scrambler. It IS a BEAST. WOW! What a TORQUEY bike. So MUCH Grunt. It is AWESOME.
I may ALSO go for the 400 Scrambler. Why not???
- Test ride BOTH.
Regards.
Really nice. Oh! And the bikes look good too! 😂
It’s good to see more choice in the smaller displacement market. Like many have stated on the previous comments, price will be the factor. If this can come in a less than £5,500, this has a VERY good chance of succeeding. I don’t actually think of this bike as competition with the RE Hunter. Its the Ninja 400, mt03, KTM 390 and the vitpilen this bike is up against.
Big hits and they better come to Canada..
excellent assessment, thanks
Hi Darcy very Nice Announcement video you have made on Triumph 400X and Truimph Speed motorcycles. Both the models are extreamly beautiful and liked by maximum people because of their looks and Performance above all motorcycle brands in 400CC Segment.Good luck to Triumph and i wish it will become a Champion motorcycles in the world
This is going to be my first bike. scrambler 400x, prefect for my city and dirt road commute.
So happy to see bajaj getting acknowledged
these bikes looks amazing! perfect for myself as a first time rider. really torn between which version to choose. I really like the colors and accessories for the X version but I'm not sure I'll ever use it offroad.
Unless you are a physically resilient youngster I would suggest that whichever is more comfortable is the one to go for. I suspect that the larger foot to bum dimension of the Scrambler would be better for me, despite my intention to never leave the tarmac!
I think the scrambler looks better.
But the speed 400 will be cheaper and I prefer to have the lower seat height having a 30 inch leg.
But if you're taller and an extra £500 doesn't bother you then the scrambler is the one to go for
They are both stunning motorcycles. I hope they do the same to the speed twins.
This is great that you are being included in these big launches. It is a really good looking bike, I think at this size, price is very important as there is a lot of competition around. If you didn’t have any license restrictions would you buy a 400 if you could have a 650 at the same price. I think also the power output in good for this capacity bike certainly more useful than the 20hp from the 350s from RE. I agree with you I like the scrambler look.
I'd certainly consider a 400 as well as a 650, and look at the overall character, feel and looks of the bike before deciding.
Looks phenomenal really, I want one. Big competitor with the RE Hunter which I also really like but this has double the HP ( though in torque its 27nm for the RE and 37 for the Triumph). Only disappointed to hear they are not launching it this year, thats an unfortunate decision. I also really like the 83.5 cm seat height on the Scrambler, that will suit me.
Thanks Darcy nice review I think they both look the nuts it will be very interesting to see how much they cost as a Triumph owner I know Triumph don’t do cheep .thanks again mate 👍
I think the Scrambler 400x is going to be my next bike. Already have a Street Glide and won't dump that, but I was looking for something fun and lighter as I turn 65 next month. Was looking at the RE Scram, but worried it wouldn't have enough power. This will cost a bit more, but with Triumph quality, this looks to be a bargain. Thanks for the intro.
Test ride a CRF300L, brilliant bikes.
Ordinarily I’d have said the scrambler is the better looking bike as I generally prefer an off road based design, but the Speed is just gorgeous! I’d be happy with either though!
Nice elucubration there. But then again, I never left disappointed any of these sessions. You really do your homework when you upload, and the relaxed friendly tone that goes with it makes it a really worthwhile experience. Awesome looking bikes, by the way. Can't wait for your feedback when you finally try them.
Cheers.
great looking bikes!
This is going to be a big hit , if they are priced right. Its an exceptionally good looking little bike and I think I want on of the red scramblers! Not had any interest in anything two wheeled since Honda neglected to import the CT125 trail.
These 2 new bikes look great and I'm leaning towards the scrambler because it's a bit taller for my 6ft 2in frame however I think that these should have been available years ago.
This end of the market has been enormous for a long time and Triumph not being a part of it is a bit of a fail in my opinion but they're coming now so I commend them for that.
if i hadn't bought my brand new trident 660 last year, I'd be looking to buy one of those now (probably the scrambler 400x).
Loving the look of the scrambler
Nice bikes. I could be tempted as I was previously looking at RE. It's a shame about the gold forks though as that has been a bit too overplayed now.
love the gold forks!
I agree with gold forks comment. Wish they would make a small engine triumph bobber 😁
Scrambler 400 is more to my liking. I saw they will go for around $3k in India 😮 wish we could get them that cheap in USA
I agree. Not sure why, but the standard looks peculiar. The Scrambler looks rugged. Reminds me of the Himalayan.
It's funny, Triumph still haven't made a rack to put a top box on their flagship Scrambler 1200, but you can get one on the 900 and this one.
It’s great to see Triumph rejoining the small bike market… I’m looking forward to test riding one of these to see how they compare to the Royal Enfield’s
Cheers
Probably a very good commuter but then a classic 350 does that job superbly. And they are cheap as chips.
The problem with these bikes is that on paper they Go against a Hunter 350 but in practice (price and performance) they Go against the interceptor which looks better sounds better and probably rides better too.
That's not at all cheap, at least in Indian perspective.
Classic 350 is a substandard bike
Substantial not substandard, the build quality for the price makes it one to consider in that capacity range.
@@winchester92stevebrook44 for you guys in UK, but in India where the triumph will be priced around 3000 GBP , it makes much more sense as the fit and finish is way better and the partner triumph has chosen has an excellent track record of quality manufacturing at comparatively low cost
I went to my local Triumph & RE dealer a couple of months back to have a look at the RE Hunter 350. I already own a couple of Triumphs, so I'm a bit of a fanboy. The salesman told me to hold off on the Hunter because he attended a Triumph meeting where they had shared they would be releasing a sub-500cc model. These bikes look great and I think the scrambler may be in my future when it hits the States.
Awesome I want one perfect size for me
Absolutely splendid review Darcy. You're fast becoming a biking guru. Not as much as me though. I went for a ride on Monday with a big clove of garlic stuck sideways in my gullet. No wonder your old man wants to emigrate, as it took three days for the NHS to pull it out of me under general anaesthetic ! Before that, they'd tried forcing a cheese sandwich down me, a prodding attempt with some neck tool and had me on a saline drip for two days. Soft foods only for a while now but a good excuse to neck rum and raisin ice cream.
That does sound sore, defo a good excuse for ice cream though! Hope it heals quickly.
Triumph haven't really had a bike suitable for those of us who are expecting to become too old and feeble to continue to ride the heavier machines since the Tiger Cub. I have been mentally preparing myself to try the KTM 390 adventure, but would rather have a Triumph if the price is in the same region. Glad to see there seems to be luggage solutions available to make the Scrambler into a lightweight adventurer/tourer. This will definitely be on my 'must test' list.
👌🏼💯
Too right. Recon you can do everything on the 400X.
The speed 400 is a beautiful machine, the tank paint job alone is a head turner!
HIT HIT HIT.
FANTASTIC QUALITY bike.
It's a WIN !!!
I wanted a 350 hunter until I found out it only had 20 bhp but this with 40 bhp is perfect, think I may be trading in my trident.
Perfect City Bike… this will be very good for everyday riding around town and commuting to college or office
As someone very new to learning motorbike riding. I am buzzing for these. I had my eyes on the Enfield classic 350 but now, I don’t know/. For a first bike, it looks ideal. Scrambler looks amazing!
Highly suggest check out Triumph or Honda's new 500 series. If it is available in your market, Yamaha SR400 is also a good choice.
Nice one, I appreciate that!
Buy 2 maybe 3 Royals instead of one Triumph...Invite friends t ride and always have a bike ready to go ride..while tinkering on the others...Another Ol'man here....
@@LooxJJthe SR400 is no longer available in the UK sadly it was pitched at the wrong price £5500 and disappeared very quickly.
As a fellow older man, I appreciate this idea. To be honest I was going to look for a daily commuter/occasional social and I have always like the BSA Bantam as one to tinker with.
Well done Triumph, it's a very good alternative for beginners with A2 licence. no need to have 47.5HP with modification it is a true A2 bike. Prices seem to be correct. i wish a good future for this bike. Next step a 750 cc ?
Trident 660? Looks close enough.
@@varun2250 of course, i didn't think about, but it 's a good response to 750cc, thank you
I think scrambler 400X will take the market.
I'll take both.... it's hard to decide after these clips...
I do like the visual appearance of the engine. They’ve got that bang on… but the rest of the bike I’m finding a bit meh to be honest.. I wish there was a twin shock and spoked wheel version like it’s bigger brothers.. monoshocks and cast wheels don’t really do it for me on a retro bike… good luck to them though, I’m sure lots of people will buy it.
Bajaj and Triumph done a extremely well job on those two bikes ❤❤❤
I want the Scrambler in green if priced comparable to competitors here in US. I have 2 heavyweight Harleys and this would be a great compliment.
Like the looks of this speed trident 400
Will sell absolutely tons of the scrambler in the States. Thanks
Cant wait to hear the price on these ... hopefully close to pricing on the RE hunter 😀
Really nice to various international bike brands collaborate with Indian Manufacturers to present such amazing and affordable bikes.
Just FYI the engine and chassis of Triumph 400s is developed by Bajaj. Everything from designing to testing of this bike was done in India.
Harley Davidson have also collaborated with Hero Moto Cop. to produce Harley Davidson x440, which uses Hero's newly designed engines.
Nice video 👍
I wish it was a two-cylinder 400cc engine, but I assume the reason behind the single cylinder is to keep the production cost and price of this machine low. I absolutely love it. I will want to buy it.
Makes me wish I was new to motorcycling again.
Looks a nice range of bikes, I will be interested in where these are manufactured, It would seem in India or Thailand.
Well, hope it will be well built - to the letter... 😄
And if the price is right it might sell like KTM 390, which I quess is made in India by Bajaj. Funny how everything goes around. Triumph 400 has anyhow the looks 100%. I would like the Scrambler because of its height...
I guess it's the same KTM 390 engine by bajaj with fins...I hope not
Great looking bikes, let's hope the pricing is sensible. Will have to start around 4.5 - 5K or the new Hornet's £7000 and 91bhp will kill it.
Nice but did you get to the pub! 😉👍
Look nice, hope can wisten a competition with similar Asian motorcycles (price, quality...)
I hope so
I think both bikes will be a 100% hit at the right price, they both look great. The only issue I would have would be choosing between which one to have, really torn between the two. I think the pricing should be between £5k - £5,500k £6k tops.
It's £2.8K in India, so no thanks.
All depends on the price really. Will be interested to see how they fit you as a taller rider.
As a 6'4" rider, you just have to come to terms that you're gonna look big and be big on just about any bike unless you go for a large displacement ADV bike. I ride a T-100 and a Vespa Sei Giorni, I love them both and either of them do exactly what I want them to do. Do I look big on them? YUP. Do I care? NOPE. I think these 400's are going to be a homerun for Triumph. They are listening to the market feedback unlike the BLK/ORA Company
Very interesting models 🤔... They managed to get them in at that magical weight mark (170kg) and with 40 horse power I'm guessing it won't be far off the KTM 390 Adventure performance wise. I think they look bang-on proportionately, finish looks great. Eyesore radiator has been cleverly hidden. It may prove to be the "Goldie Locks" bike... Not too heavy or light, just enough power to keep most people satisfied, economical, affordable, proportionally perfect and very pretty from every angle. Could this become Triumphs best seller? I think it will.
This would greatly tempt me to trade in my Meteor 350 for the speed 400. Lighter, more torque and more top speed but still has the same vibe
Looking at these two bikes I just wonder with Royal Enfield sales out stripping Triumphs if they felt it was vital they try and compete in the very fast rising smaller capacity nimble machine market.
Price point will be the deciding factor as to there success
They look like a great upgrade option for Hunter 350 and Scam/Himalayan riders.
Dear Darcy i want to know will these two model 400cc motorcycles run smoothly with 20% Ethanol mix petrol
I really like the scrambler version. Much more understated without the big triangle logo. BUT, have a look at the Fantic Caballero.....it is quite the competetor at 500cc and it had an actual scrambler exhausts that heats your right leg in winter. I'm curious to see how these two hold up against each other!
Would love to see a Scrambler 400 XE, with 180mm+ travel, maybe 21" front wheel, spoke wheels,...
