Having had many many bikes over the last 20 years, It is fantastic to see the quality of choices we now have with lighter bikes. Gone is my GS1200, Triumph Explorer, Harley Fatboy... all great bikes but so heavy to push around the garage or to pick up, (if ever down) Replaced with KTM 390 Adventure, Royal Enfield 350 Classic, and can’t wait to see this new Triumph 400 Scrambler at dealership and if lucky, in the garage with other small bikes above. You can actually buy all 3 for the price of one new large displacement Adventure bike. Thank you Triumph for bringing us these bikes. Well done! Having ridden the Z400 recently i have to say it really impressed. The chassis was absolutely brilliant, compliant but rock solid secure. The engine too was a peach and felt peppy without being buzzy. My fear, just like with the 390, when you go searching for higher BHP in a single you tend to lose the traditional advantages of the single but without ever getting near the BHP of a twin. On the other hand if it's just a styling thing, sure, the Triumph will mop up.
I'm in the same reflexion ; as I have many motorway to go to my job I was thinking about the Z400 for its 2-cylinders, I even thought about the MT-03, but these Triumph looks like what I was expecting, I'd like to have them with 2-cylinders and it would be perfect !

Those Metzelers are a perfect tire choice for many bikes regardless of if they’re a sports oriented bike or not. Had the M7s on my SV650 and they got phenomenal mileage and had incredible cold and wet grip only moved to the Rosso’s because Metzler rubber gets a bit greasy once you track on a hot day or are riding the twisties in 110+° temps. Can imagine on a much lighter less powerful bike the wear difference between a sports tire of the M9’s type and a sport touring tire is minimal.
Your channel is generally my go-to for bike previews and walkarounds, but this time around, I ended up getting info from various other channels first - and now I realise I've been spoiled by Motobob with top-class production. You provide useful context (things like why a sub-frame is important and how the final drive ratio will affect performance), your delivery is easy on the ears all through long vids, and the camera work is always excellent. Keep up the fantastic work! Really excited about these two models, I'm really keen on a lightweight bike that can do >120kmph on long rides and be easier to handle than my heavy GT 650 - so it's likely the Speed 400 for me. The build quality and components look solid too.
The pressure in the rear shock remote reservoir will be exactly the same as pressure in a shock without a remote reservoir because the swinging arm is facing the same movement through the same linkage and same weight spring. The extra capacity in the remote reservoir is there to provide a) extra volume of oil and gas so that the performance of the damping does not degrade so rapidly and b) through the surface of the reservoir an extra cooling area for the oil and c) a place where oil that has been frothed can loose the gas bubbles and consequently provide more consistent performance in damping the suspension movement
Been thinking of a small cc Scrambler for years and here it is!! Rocking the 2017 Street Scrambler and I’m obsessed with it, but damn! That 400X looks amazing! 🔥 if it had double rear shocks, I would’ve traded mine for one of these little jewels without hesitation. Hope they’ll sell well, Triumph deserves good recognition for the effort of making these 2 beautiful models.
USD forks have more unsprung mass because the the wheel, the spindle, the brake disc and caliper and the steel tubes move, With right way up forks the steel tubes are static and the fork sliders move (usually aluminium and usually incorporating the caliper mounts). The steel tubes are much heavier than the fork sliders
Miles and miles ahead of the Royal Enfield offerings. Not only beats the 350s but the 650s as well. Don't know what the engine will Dyno, but the advertized HP is about the same as the 650 Enfield Dynoed at the Cycle World facility. With the lighter weight of the Triumph, it should be faster and more nimble than the Interceptor.
I like the Scrambler . Gravel roads that aren’t ideal would be ideal. I’d add a rack with a top box for stowing helmet, wet weather gear, shopping items. If the performance is good enough, owners will save a lot on insurance, registration, and servicing costs. If it’s not, there’s always the Speed Twin.
Agree on the tail light, looks great and very Z Kawasaki. Biggest issue I have is with the gold forks that only the Ohlins equipped Thruxton R or beyond got. Other cheap small capacity bikes do this and Triumph should have known better. Needs the Black headlight bezel also that they settled on a few years ago for the better. Can see the quality and little touches shining through though.
I think that's what Triumph was hoping. But I have a feeling that it will be older riders that will be the main buyers. Just like with the Hunter 350. Just s guess
I'm here in the states 61 years old, 5'9"with a 30" inch in seam. I've recently owned a Yamaha wr250r a little to tall for me even lowered an inch. My hip isn't happy throwing it over the bike or confident with picking it up anymore. Then a Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Looking for something in between those two right now. Either should fit be a good fit. I'd perfer the scrambler right now. Looking forward to them coming to the states. Thanks for the walk around. Cheers!
On the topic of the dash, I definitely prefer to have double clocks, like on the Bonneville. But if its going to be single clock like here and on Street Twin/Scrambler then I do at least like to have analogue speedometer, which this has, and I like that it has all the info you need in that sidescreen too. So very well done here in my opinion, could only have been improved if they had done double clocks like for instance the Kawasaki Z650RS. For me, having both tacho and speedometer in digital format removes some of the sensation of progress somehow, I like to see the needle move up the range.
Good looking bikes, I have the Hunter 350 which cost me £3600 spent another £250 on bits to sort out some of the more budget parts. These look a significant step up. But it will be all about the final price. Scrambler looks like a very nice bike.
Love it. The new $6K is a 400cc, used to be the 600cc, those are now $8K. Inflation. For a $8K you could get a used Mazda Miata, just as much fun and more usability. Life keeps on evolving.
These look great, I picked up a Vitpilen 401 for my first moto this season, but if these were available, I think I would have made the jump up to a Triumph!
A wise person knows what a great size 400 is for the real streets . Not a beginners bike at all . Though great for beginners . That’s how great they are . Thanks triumph !!!
Upside down forks don't put the lighter part of the fork on the unspring weight, the piece bolted to the wheel is the steel stantion, the lighter alloy part is actually the slider and becomes sprung weight. They do create more rigidity having the larger diameter part clamped in the yokes but certainly don't save unsprung weight but add to it.
Speaking of the Royal Enfield twin cylinder 650 Interceptor, it has 47 horsepower. This new Triumph 400 single cylinder gets close to that with 39.5 horsepower. The RE Himalayan 400 single only has 24 horsepower. Triumph’s power productivity is far ahead of RE. Did you know the RE 650 Interceptor has a wet weight that is the same as a Triumph speed twin 900?
@@simonlangmead7 Yes I owned a Himalayan and I am about to buy an Interceptor. I would just love a Triumph twin, roughly the same size/weight/power as the original 60/70's Bonneville - it was perfect then and it would be perfect now...but with less oil leaks...and the electrics would work...
I think Triumph nailed it with these 400's! I would go for the scrambler X myself. Very good video my man. It looks a lot like my 2022 CFMOTO CL-X 700 Heritage, which I really like.
The issue is not that it is made in India more that Triumph presents itself as being a premium British brand especially with the prominent use of the Union Jack flag on the tank. They could equally be honest and have the Indian flag on the tank if they want to display any type of nationalist symbol. Honda is now an international brand and we all accept their bikes are made in many countries. Neither my Japanese Honda nor my Honda from Thailand have any nationalistic symbols on them which is good.

This bike will be a hit product in India. People here are crazy for bike as we have limited options with enfield, but now with this and harely Davidson it's gone be a good market for Indians.
Both look great and its nice to see Triumph releasing something smaller and more affordable. Only issue is the insurance for younger riders like myself is still extortionate so I doubt we will see many of the target demographic riding these
Those Metzelers are a perfect tire choice for many bikes regardless of if they’re a sports oriented bike or not.
Can't wait for your riding impressions Bob👍
Me either! They look like they should be fun :)
I’m loving the Scrambler 400X in Khaki green. Looks like it’ll be the perfect bike for local 1-2 night moto camping adventures here in Colorado.
Are they available in US?
I just wanted to thank you for doing a detailed explanation of the difference between the speed and scrambler.
Triumph has an explosion here. Love both...obsessed with the X
USD forks have more unsprung mass because the the wheel, the spindle, the brake disc and caliper and the steel tubes move,
With right way up forks the steel tubes are static and the fork sliders move (usually aluminium and usually incorporating the caliper mounts). The steel tubes are much heavier than the fork sliders
This guys rate of speech is just so precise. Not too fast not too slow with out any fillers
Diff market.. RE is retro styled while this is a modern take.
Great bikes to get the younger Gen into biking, Both look great
I think that's what Triumph was hoping. But I have a feeling that it will be older riders that will be the main buyers. Just like with the Hunter 350. Just s guess
Younger generation is not really in to biking. They prefer dancing on tik tok.
@@oblivion_007lmao
Looks way better than hunter350
Well, this is much pricier so why not.
Bro price matters
@@pitambarbariha7450well you have to pay more for triumph premium bikes. And also remember the service interval is 16k km which is unbelievable.
It will compitition with upcoming roadster version of re 450 cc
I'm here in the states 61 years old, 5'9"with a 30" inch in seam. I've recently owned a Yamaha wr250r a little to tall for me even lowered an inch. My hip isn't happy throwing it over the bike or confident with picking it up anymore. Then a Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Looking for something in between those two right now. Either should fit be a good fit. I'd perfer the scrambler right now. Looking forward to them coming to the states. Thanks for the walk around.
Cheers!
These look brilliant. Looking forward to sitting on one in the showroom
Can't wait to see them in real life. I like the Speed 400 over the 400X, but they both look good. Real good. Thanks for posting/sharing.
Ordered my Scrambler 400x already ❤
Love it. The new $6K is a 400cc, used to be the 600cc, those are now $8K. Inflation. For a $8K you could get a used Mazda Miata, just as much fun and more usability. Life keeps on evolving.
Yes, i laugh when these reviewers says good value or economic bike or call it a bargain.
@@the.communist I have seen brand new left over Trident for $7K out the door, that makes this new 400cc outrageous pricey.
@@lokitomanny right 400cc should be around 4000$
These look great, I picked up a Vitpilen 401 for my first moto this season, but if these were available, I think I would have made the jump up to a Triumph!
That Daytona over the glass window looks amazing !
A wise person knows what a great size 400 is for the real streets . Not a beginners bike at all . Though great for beginners . That’s how great they are . Thanks triumph !!!
im glad the brought back the old bar grip style from the older street triple , small thing i know but its nice to see
Upside down forks don't put the lighter part of the fork on the unspring weight, the piece bolted to the wheel is the steel stantion, the lighter alloy part is actually the slider and becomes sprung weight. They do create more rigidity having the larger diameter part clamped in the yokes but certainly don't save unsprung weight but add to it.
Fab bikes but... what I really wanted them to make was a 500 twin, bang on the 47hp like the RE Interceptor. Imagine that!
Fantastic looking little (not so little) bikes! ❤
At last - new bikes that look like a motorcycle should, not transformers!
Nice review. I’m genuinely tempted in trading my Guzzi V7 for the scrambler version despite having half the capacity.
I think Triumph nailed it with these 400's! I would go for the scrambler X myself. Very good video my man. It looks a lot like my 2022 CFMOTO CL-X 700 Heritage, which I really like.
From all the bike reviews on you tube, You are to the point Bob, . Olympic gold for best reviews . Greatings from a old fart biker from Belgium.
The Scrambler looks really tasty 🤩 The proof will be in the pricing. Looking forward to the first ride review!
I dont know why everyone angry about these bikes because its made in India not in UK.
No one is angry about made in India
Lmao many triumphs are made in Thailand.
It’s a Bajaj with a huge profit margin. It in no way reflects the standards of a brand like Triumph.
@@lukerabin5079ain't no way you believe that
Thank you for mentioning Bajaj in your review. Bajaj really did a marvelous job on these bikes. ❤
My long wait is over ...One of these would be my next bike, thanks triumph & Bajaj!!
Those bikes will be competitive in the Philippines once released. 400cc is what we are after nowadays. Coz they can enter in any expressways in the Philippines. Nice bikes and nice review by the way. Thanks man!
Nope in the Philippines, these are 398 cc bikes technically the govt won't allow them on the expressway.
@@BlackHawkTejas Bike displacement were being round up if you know what I mean. Like KTM 390 and this new Bikes from Triumph. Ninja 400 and Z400 which is 398cc displacement. Not to worry coz in paper, they were classified as 400cc displacement. So they were legal in Philippine Expressway.
I love the look of both these lets hope they keep em around £5k
What's the price of 390 Duke in your Country?
I want the scrambler to be cheaper than the 390A here in the US. That bike is $7399 here which I feel like is a bit overpriced.
@@Ntmoffi here in India, 390A is 5000-5100 USD
If they expect riders to chose this over the Himalayan they’re going have to be nearer 4.5k..
@@Ntmoffi it might be slightly cheaper than KTM390 initially.
I was going to buy a RE Hunter 350 and scram it out, but now I can just buy the 400x. Love it.
speed 400 looks great .... great competition for the hunter depending on price
Best timing to bring it to the audience. I am gonna buy a 400 x
Benvenuta Triumph in the low side! Umbelivable tank design and up-side forks both classic and aggressive. Really hope they could improve also the next 900 generation. Bravi!!
that speed 400 looks good as a starting base of a neo retro cafe hehehe
These look great for people coming back or upgrading from a small bike.....would love one ......basic biking with just enough modern tech
As an 18 yo, i finally found what to get after my 125, finally a cheap, reliable, good looking and well built bike
Cheap and reliability, that will be known in the coming months
Fantastic looking bike. Only gripe: I'd love an analogue tachometer, just like the "big" classic Triumphs.
Wish they did a 500 Bonneville
looks like they borrowed the KTM sprockets or actually the Bajaj Sprockets so at least something Ktm Bajaj and triumph share apart from the brakes. they have to be priced 3 lakhs Ex showroom to take on the KTM 390 DUKE , ADV and especially the RE interceptor 650.
MOTOBOB , did you ever get the chance to review the BAJAJ DOMINAR 400 ???? (i do know they don't sell in the UK) curious since its a competitor to the Triumph 400 and Ktm 390s which are all made by Bajaj.
The red speed 400 looks amazing!
Great review! Thank you. Love how I walked into Triumph and switched from a BMW R1100S to my current Thruxton R1100 - the fit, finish and quality I see run through the complete heritage. Well done Triumph! Cheers
These both look absolutely sweet. Can't wait til they hit market in the US
Much love for the baby triumphs, it looks like a ton of value for the money. However, seeing that the speed twin 1200 didn't get the monoshock treatment has me feeling I'm a little jealous 😂
If the 400X is under 6K I'll buy one for a second bike to my Thruxton 1200R
Yeah, I'm thinking of one as a commuter to go with the Striple RS
I am in love with Triumph bikes from the time I first saw these tremendously beautiful looking retro style bikes. Triumph Speed Twin 1200 is my love. I am glad these bikes are coming to India with affordable price, now the retro bike lovers have a choice to ride the quality bikes from the house of Triumph. I liked both these bikes.
I hope these are competitively priced. The 400 will be my next little commuter bike if that's the case.
Scrambler in green looks fantastic brown seat gold forks take my money
I'm getting the 400x pumped.
I'm so happy that Triumph has finally made a quality beginner bike but I'm really disappointed they didnt go 500. Like Honda I think 500 is a perfect beginner happy medium that you don't sacrifice too much on in regards to useability. Though 40 Ps is pretty good for 400, no? I love that red tank but I'd put my money on the Scrambler. Now I can afford a Triumph? LOL!
Sure would be nice to hear it, I think that’ll be a major selling factor for a lot of people
I dig the scrambler. I like the bark busters and the simple instrument display. If it had spoke wheels and some more aggressive set of tires (perelli scorpions?)
Gimme a blacked-out version, without the brown seat or the dodgy gold-coloured forks, and I'd be interested.
Really insightful and measured commentary. Great job.
I wish the analog dial was the tach with a digital speed readout.
Can you do the exhaust note review of this one?
I'm new to your channel. You are so good with these reviews, walkarounds. .
Appreciate the kind words! And welcome aboard 🍻
Hd x440 and re 450 himalayan also coming in this segment
What a really helpful and informative review . Thanks Bob , looking forward to a demo ride
Well, they do look the part. Fit and finish look absolutely on point. Although I wasn't in the market for a wee scrambler, I am now! Great job Motobob and Triumph, you have just lightened my wallet!
A British 400 which is what I have always wanted. Why has it taken over 25 years and why is it not available till January.
That scrambler is all I needed! Beaultiful bike!
waiting for this video
Triumph has nailed it with almost everything, these bikes sits where tend to think twice before buying any bikes, probably most of would also Consider buying it bcuz of its Premium quality and added Power yet not going overboard to the category of Superbikes types. Now Only Pricing would be the main Differencing Factor.
If Speaking of India, if They price slightly higher than Bajaj Dominor 400 thats the sweet spot
Wish it was a 500. 500 singles have been historically a lot of fun for experienced riders but still manageable for a newish rider.
that scrambler looks just awesome!
The Scrambler looks fun!
Having one of these looks like a grest compliment to my Harley
