    Here is a reamp demo of the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Multi Watt Amplifier.
    I boost the amp in this video with a Fulltone OCD pedal as dual recs are notoriously dry amps (something I love!). I felt this demonstrated the amp better for metal purposes.I used the same DI signal as the EVH Video so you can flip back and forth between amps whilst hearing the same riffs.
    Signal Chain:
    Mayones Duvell Elite 6 String
    Seymour Duncan P-Rail Pickups
    Line 6 Helix (as reamp box)
    Fulltone OCD Pedal
    Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Multi-Watt Head (Bold/Diode/100watt)
    Mesa Boogie Oversized Rectifier 4x12 Cabinet
    Shure SM57 Microphone
    Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 Soundcard
    Steinberg Cubase 7.0.7
    Toontrack Superior Drummer

    That sounds amazing but one offer to tweak to the EQ'ing at the end - cut the mud out around 250-300Hz, but boost around the same amount around 100Hz to keep some of the percussiveness! Sounds great already!

      I'm sorry for responding to an old comment. in the Ola England Interview with John Browne, John mentioned that Animus was written for Gnosis years ago but they didn't originally have vocals for it.
      I hope i remembered that right. Cheers!

    hey john, first of all of like to say I'm a huge fan of the music you've done with monuments. I really enjoy your angular riffs and phrasing. also, my drummer friend and I have been debating forever what time signature the intro to horcrux is in so if you could help settle our debate, we would much appreciate it. keep up the good music!

    If you ever decide to get a Dual Rec, avoid the first TriChannel by all means. I was uninformed and ended up getting that flub&fizz factory. It also practically dies in the mix.
    You want to either buy this "100W Head" which is the new multiwatt version, or an old two-channel Recto (REV G would be awsome!). Or just get an EVH 5150 III.
    Great vid, John!

      I got the non multiwatt three channel version from 2008 and it sounds unbelieveble. The trick is to set the EQ right, basically turn up the mids and the presence, lower the bass and it will sound exactly like the multiwatt if not better. Alot of iconic albums recorded with a non multiwatt version in the early 2000's

  • @returntodeathmetal

    Thanks for showing your eq settings during the full song at the end. I just recorded a few tracks with a 57 and had a hell of a time getting the great tone and coming out of the amp to translate exactly on to the recording. There was this top end 'harshness' that was plaguing the sound. When I'd eq it out, it had no sparkle. Anyways, great video.

Seriously, I walk by the thing and randomly hug it. Just traded an Orange RVmk1 100 for an older gen Triple with some SICK tubes in it. It's a beast as well... but that Voodoo Multiwatt....jesus.

    I have this exact amp. It rips and has killer mids and low end. I use a MXR 10 band EQ in front to tighten it up a bit and a Tube Screamer just for a tiny bit of extra gain. It tends to bring out the highs a bit.

      I have owned a Road King, 2 channel, 2 channel rack, 2000s dual and triple, Multi watt triple and dual, and now I own a roadster. The new multiwatts by far track cleaner and clearer than any rectifier to date. They are incredible. Live they are at the top as well, but noticed being in a 3 piece the roadster sound much warmer and better live and fills the void better. But If you are just playing guitar in a 4 piece the multiwatt is king. They can get real fizzy live thats why the roadster works better live for me at least. But my god I miss my Multiwatt. I had a blacked out one, black diamond plate. ugh fml. AND YES GE-7 FTW with boost. But John browne, try the ge-7 in the back, MUCH BETTER. Bring, the bass up a tad, and the bass mid up a tad, then slightly scoop the mid, kinda like a very very subtle V shape, it sounds amazing.

    Curious John what’s your opinion on the single rectifier I. Comparison. Only curious because its Much cheaper to upkeep but worried might not quiet be the same figured you’d know best when it comes to rectifiers and these types of tones.

    • @DR440
      @DR440 5 років тому

      The single is very underrated and overlooked. The Dual and Triple have a bit more low end due to more wattage. The single seems to be a slight bit brighter. The Single will get every bit as aggressive as the Dual. It gives up nothing to the Dual in terms of volume. In fact, it's loud as hell. The series II solo 50 is the one to get because you have a switch to change between to EL34 and 6L6's. It also has three modes instead of two on the gain channel. I wouldn't turn down a series one though for the right price.
      The Dual and Triple also have the rectifier tubes which the single does not. Being that most people who play modern metal have the switch set to solid state diode instead of tube rectifier, it is a moot point anyways. Those rectifier tubes are another thing you won't have to worry about with a Single. I guess you could say it's in solid state rectifier mode all the time.
      The single is all about what setup you got going on taking into factors like the guitar, tubes, speakers and the overdrive pedal pushing it (needed for tightness). That could be said for many amps though. I think the single shines with an EL34 or KT77 type tube. That is just my two cents. I have a Single now and previously had a Dual Rectifier ( not the mutli watt). I just didn't get along with the Dual. The cost of tube changing is also a plus with a Single. Retubing a Triple is $$$!
      I can't comment on the multi - watt versions because I have not tried those yet.

    • @hellskreamer
      @hellskreamer 8 років тому +4

      Absolutely not! I've owned one for a year soon and when dialed correctly, it is tight as percussive as hell, but if you turn the bass way to high it get's really flubby, but you can go rather high without flubbyness, atleast in my experience, works excelent with closed cab, but i don't really know with open cabs as they tend to be bassier. that might be why you think this.

    • @DomSchu
      @DomSchu 8 років тому +6

      Yeah, I've owned a rec for 7 years and it can be flubby, but it can also be extremely tight. It all depends on how you eq it. Generally you need way less bass than you'd expect and the more mids you add the tighter it gets.
      Another reason people might think they're flubby is because they pick up any technique flaws when you're playing way too well. So a player who sounds good through a modeling amp can sound like a mess through a Rectifier.
      I know when I recently got a modeling practice amp for home use I was amazed how easy it was to play through. I don't want to get too used to that though, got to keep the chops up.

    • @hellskreamer
      @hellskreamer 8 років тому

      It's more or less when you know how to eq it, it wont get flubby, but when you don't know how to eq it properly, its gonna get flubby and weird. The dual rec's eq is a little bit weird as everything changes from the slightest thouch on the mids or bass or stuff like that. I've only had one for a year but i manage to eq it the way i want to, but only since like 2 months back, before that i just tried my best to copy other peoples tones to get something good out of it lol... Cheers!

    • @JohnBrownemonuments
      @JohnBrownemonuments  8 років тому +11

      That's your opinion, i find the Pod/Helix better for more 'in your face' sounds than both the kemper and axe fx.

    • @Silverjerk
      @Silverjerk 8 років тому +1

      To be totally fair, all three units sound great when you dial them in, and none of them sound perfect out of the box. Like John, however, I do find the Helix to be a bit more present. I also appreciate the interface; I still shudder over the time it took me to wrangle my Ultra when I first switched over to digital racks years ago -- the Helix was up and running in just a few hours. I definitely don't want to invite a long, drawn out debate here (you can already find those on the respective products' forums and long arguments over on the Gear Page) I'm just personally saying that as someone who's used all three units, the assertion that the Axe FX or KPA sounds better is usually made by naysayers of Line 6, rather than individuals who've spent any real time with the Helix. Personally, I opted for the rack model with the accompanying floor unit and run my own Mission pedals (rather than the floor processor itself), and it's completely replaced my Axe FX for both recording and live play (not that I do much of the latter anymore).

    • @sirefromtheshire
      @sirefromtheshire 8 років тому

      I had the Axe Fx Mark 2 for about a year...and overall I wasn't super impressed. It took so long to dial in the tones, especially a great distortion tone (to my liking). Once I finally got it, it sounded pretty good though. I ran it through a Matrix Amplification GT-1000FX and a Bogner Uberschall 4x12. I'd say the hype on Fractal is a bit overproduced.
      Asking you though from your experiences....how great is the Helix? I will admit i'm skeptical of Line 6 knowing firsthand how bad some of their tones have been in the past (Spider combo amps and series). That doesn't mean i'm a naysayer, but I'm interested in the Helix because I keep hearing great things. Do you have any soundclips?

    • @Silverjerk
      @Silverjerk 8 років тому

      metalhed8908 I also ran my Axe through a Matrix, but opted for an FRFR cab. And it also took me a long time to get a high-gain tone I really loved. Same boat, for sure.
      I don't have any soundclips for the Helix at the moment, but I'll try and get some on Soundcloud when I have some time. And I totally empathize with your skepticism; all I can say is, as both a room player, and as someone who made a living gigging for some time, I never touched any of the Line 6 gear outside of the HD500. I owned an old bean Pod as well, which I used to record scratch tracks about 15 years ago, but the HD500 was honestly the only other Line 6 product I purchased before the Helix. I was, like you, very unimpressed with their kit.
      I played and owned a lot of other modelers as well; nearly every multi-effects unit Boss has ever put out, including the GT-100, which is collecting dust in drawer somewhere, and I've owned many Marshall, Orange, and Mesa rigs. Lots of racks as well; outside of the Helix and Axe, I also had an Eleven Rack for some time. So I've been around this block a few times, all with varying degrees of success.
      For me, the decision came down to putting Helix next to my Axe, playing the patches I use most often, and just making a subjective decision. There are areas where the Axe shines, for sure, but for my money, the Helix just made more sense, being astronomically easier to work with (especially on the fly if needed). I also love the full color LCD scribble strips on the foot controller -- game changer, in my opinion. My only gripe, was my current SP1 and EP1's don't work with it, so I had to spend another few hundred dollars to get new "Line 6" Mission Pedals. I understand why this was necessary (I talked to Mission about the L6 tech), but it still felt like a bit of a detractor. That being said, it was still substantially less for the floorboard, the pedals, and the separate foot controller with the rack unit, than it was for my full Axe setup.
      Your mileage my vary, of course, and I would suggest checking out one of their floor units at a local shop if you can get the chance. Good luck!

    Can anyone tell me if the dual rectifier would ever need an overdrive/boost in front of it to do super heavy chugging palm muted riffs? I like the supper tight crunchy tones of Master of Puppets and And Justice for All. I know a 2C+ would be ideal, but there's no way I could buy one. How well would the dual rectifier do those types of chugging scooped thrash tones?
