Hi and thanks so much for your kind words! :) This is Phal Elegance Deborah...that's the trade name given by Silver Vase Orchids. (I don't have the registered name.) Happy growing!
I didn't realize that the blooms on Elegance Deborah were such a beautiful purple color - it must be the light that you were filming in today. I can see why you purchased her. Just gorgeous! From the color of the center root, I gather that she still had her original plug? I'm glad that you decided to go ahead and transplant her. I have to say that you are a real pro at transplanting - you make it looks so easy! :)
Hi Caro! I've been growing Phals for sooo long...almost 17 years...and these blooms stopped me in my tracks! (I didn't need another phal, you know! LOL!) This video catches the true color of the blooms. She was stuffed in so much moss, and it was really just one huge plug. So glad I freed her! :)) (I thought I heard her sigh in relief when she got "unstuck"!) I really enjoy transplanting orchids...I put some good music on and it's actually relaxing!:) Thanks always for the encouraging words, my friend...I appreciate you! Blessings to you & T & S !!
I think I have a new favorite Phal!! I just had to add her to your orchid album ---> photos.app.goo.gl/7PmxACrLbWhDjXAo9 I don't know how you do it but you always seem to find the most beautiful phals! It's almost like they are waiting for you to buy them and take them home. They know you are an awesome orchid Mom! :) We have alot of rain heading our way from Hurricane Florence. I don't have to worry about flooding where I live, thank goodness, but I do worry about the wind and falling trees. Stay safe and dry, my friend! I guess T & S and I will take one last walk before we hunker down! :)
That's a gorgeous screen shot, Caro! Thanks so much for putting together the fabulous orchid gallery for me...I appreciate it more than you know! :) I do think these orchids wait for me at Kroger. haha! Some of them I just can't leave there. We will have rain, but I am surrounded by mountains, and they either tend to keep the rain and snow in or out. But at least the mountains will slow the storm down. Blessings to you & T & S !!! :)
If you ever find another Phal. Elegance Deborah, will you do me a HUGE favor and purchase it for me? I will drive up and retrieve it! I'm serious! I hope you are right about the rain - they are closing many of the trails, campgrounds, roads, and other facilities in the park in anticipation of the deluge of rain we are supposed to receive. I'll keep you updated! :) Blessings from Caro & the napping pups!
Yes, I will purchase an Elegance Deborah for you if they get more in! Please keep me updated...praying for your safety, my friend! Blessings to you & T & S !!! A & B who is also taking a rainy day nap!
Thanks for your question. This is one of my older videos. I published a new video on how I water my orchids in sphagnum moss...here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/83LysTfpdQc/v-deo.html You can see exactly how much water I use and how I know when it needs to be watered again. The trick is, you don't overwater it. I need to create a playlist on watering, and I'll add this to the top of the list. Happy growing!
Hi Amy! I'm watching a lot of your video's and getting ready to buy supplies for my new Orchid that's arriving soon. When I transplant my orchid in Moss, do I have to put packing peanuts at the bottom? And do I purchase any kind of Packing Peanuts? Thank you so much for your help. ❤💐
You mention your phal orchid names in your videos and wondered about that, as I most often do not see a name tag with the orchids sold in the stores. Do you ID them online as well?
I hate when orchid nurseries do that🙈😣!!! The other day I repotted a oncidium that was potted with way too much spagnum moss!! It took about 3 hours to get the packed moss out from around all fragile the roots!! I like the idea of soaking the moss with some cal/mag 🌸 I'm going to try that!
Olga l I recently got a hybrid orchid in bloom for $5 and it was so drenched in sphagnum moss. By the time I got all of it off the orchid, the orchid ended up with 1 “iffi root. I praying I can save it!
Help please! I found a white creepy crawly in my orchid today. It was skinny, in a fluffy white place at the base of a leaf. It was about an 1/8 of an inch long and skinny. Worst part, it moved! I caught it and it is no longer. I don’t see more but I know that is false security. What should I do? I imagine unposting it and spraying is involved. Could you please help me? I would really appreciate it. Thank you. L
Hi there! I'm surprised to see you re potting a plant in bloom. So is it the cal-mag ep. salts mixture that makes it safe to do that? I've always been told not to do anything with an orchid in bloom because the flowers will drop and whenever I've needed to do it, the flowers did drop. If the water culture mixture prevents that then that's awesome cos I've often needed to re pot a new orchid in bloom because I can see the roots are dying in old rotten moss. For some reason the small mini orchids always have that problem wherever I buy them from. I'm in UK and it seems standard practice for growers to cram the small orchids in tons of moss, so much so that the roots get strangled in tightly packed moss in a tiny pot. I'm always loosing those small orchids for that reason, if I wait for it to stop flowering then the roots are completely gone but when I re pot straight after buying I loose the flowers and the plant because it goes into shock and dies on me, it's so frustrating!
Hi Greta and thanks so much for watching! After I read your comment, I did another video explaining why I repot a new mini phal immediately after buying it. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/BsOXpbrhC5Y/v-deo.html I was having the exact same experience as you, and I've had really good success with repotting them as soon as I bring them home. Have a great day and happy growing! :) Amy
Greta Hunt I tried to leave mine in original pot while blooming beautiful an I had to move it something told me to wash those roots it appears they had old moss was horrible black so I thought do it or let it rot so I took that moss an like this lady I was picking moss stuffed into that plant a mound of it when I washed all that in the center of the roots were tiny 🐌 snails eating away I blasted those nasty things with 3%peroxide and waited a bit and rinsed it thoroughly So I would rather lose a bloom, but to my surprise it didn’t seem to effect my two full spikes it’s doing fine so now I will always repot if I have purchased a new plant my plant would have been killed by those snails 🐌 ughh I hate them . So fall in an clean them then you know exactly how your plant is.
Hi Wayne and thanks so much for watching! You can place a bowl of water with a drop of dishwashing liquid (I use Ivory liquid) around he affected plants. Fruit flies can't resist it! Also, if you'll place an oscillating fan in your grow area, they won't be able to fly, and that stops their life cycle. Happy growing!
Hi Karen and thanks so much for watching! Here's a link to my video about CalMag and Epsom salts: ua-cam.com/video/NAlLWcpoDqk/v-deo.html Happy growing!
Hi Roxanne! Yes, this is the true name for this orchid...Phal. Elegance Deborah. Bu this one has ruffly petals, which makes it unique. Keep me posted...I hope you find one!:) Happy growing! Amy
Wow, what exquisite colors on that Phal.

Exploring spaghnum moss as a medium, and I would like to have seen how much you watered after repotting with very damp spaghnum…?

Hi, can I repot the roots after I clean my plant for reporting

After you repot, do you water right away with plain water or do you water right away with cal Mac and Epsom salts?
I water right away with CalMag...no Epsom salt is needed when you use CalMag because it has magnesium in it. 🌷⚘
Hi! If there are green moss on the spagnum moss medium where my orchid sits on, is that bad? Do I have to re-pot my orchid?

Hi I love your videos is there anything I could do for fruit flies in plants media. I’m seeing fruit flies can I control that. Thank you.

I'm new to orchids but why would you put her in just spagna moss? Why wouldn't you put her in a bark and moss mixture? Thank you
Why some people say don’t repot when it’s flowering , how to know what is best?
I don't repot when it's spiking, but when it's blooming, I've never had any problems repotting.
Hi I have a question when I use bark and moss it gets a funny smell it’s that normal
Your mixture of Epsom salts and Cal mag? Please can you give more info? Quatities etc.
Hi Karen and thanks so much for watching! Here's a link to my video about CalMag and Epsom salts: ua-cam.com/video/NAlLWcpoDqk/v-deo.html

Where do you find your packing peanuts? All the ones I find are degradable.
Hi! You can find non-dissolvable packing peanuts at most craft stores, like Hobby Lobby or Michael's. Happy growing!
Can you give phals fertilizer the first day they go in water culture?
Hi Mya! The first week I give my Phals only CalMag, and then I start fertilizing them after the first week or 2. Have a great day!
What is cal meg
Yes I instantly repot a new phal due to all that moss.
Hi Kathy! They definitely do better when I repot them soon after buying them. Happy growing! :)
