    Thank you for sharing this video. Hope the Phal loves it's new home and grows leaves as a gesture of Thanking You. Hope you remember I told you about my flask of Phals. We deflasked them on the 16th of this month. Growing them in Moss as you suggested. Lost 2 babies as we were little late to deflask them.(They went yellow) We have 20 baby Pink Phals. Very excited to see them grow. Now the challenge is to keep them happy and help them grow. As a beginner this is the greatest challenge i have. Although my rootless Phal was in water culture, I decided to move it in coal+bark+moss media. Some little nudges are there..but that's about it..That's going to be her home for (hopefully, if she picks herself up!) until her next bloom. I learn a lot from your videos..they are blessings for me. Many thanks for helping me on this wonderful adventure with Orchids.

    I know it must have hard to cut off those beautiful spikes but the health of the plant must come first! I think Sandy will be very happy in her new home. I can't wait to see the followup video showcasing her new leaf! 😊 I have to say I don't think I have ever potted an orchid in a pot that large! She will need her own table!

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому +1

      Hi Caro! It was hard to cut the spikes until I actually did it, and then I was quite relieved! I've had to do that several times in the past, and so it's what you do for the health of the plant, just like you said! The spikes are really beautiful in this vase, so I'm enjoying them. It's funny you mentioned Sandy would have to have her own table....she's out in the sunroom and she has to have her own space! lol! The roots grew so long, I knew if I didn't have a pot that large, she simply wouldn't fit. :)

      Orchid Whisperer I bet you'll see a new leaf very soon! One advantage of potting her in such a large pot is how infrequently you'll need to water. Probably only every couple of weeks with a pot that size! How is TLDTC doing? Any more buds open yet? 🌸🌸🌸

      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому

      Hi Teresa! Thanks so much for sharing. This Phal was in FWC for about 2 years, as well. When they don't grow new leaves, I take that as a sign to repot them. (Or, as you say, when they look tired.) I hope yours grow really well in moss. Have a great day! Amy

      I just moved my phal from FWC to moss because she’s growing new leaves but they aren’t getting full size. It barely has roots so I’m hoping moss will help her thrive

    I like this advice. Orchids are new to me, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible.
    I am trying to get away from plastic. Have you (or anyone reading this) had success with the terra cotta orchid pots?

    • @vildhallon4709
      @vildhallon4709 4 роки тому

      Succulents do super well with Terra Cotta pots, i think it might be because it dries out faster! Be careful with orchids in terracotta pots thought. it can absorb water from the orchid roots and dry them out too much and damage the roots. Best of luck!

    I thought orchids love to be tightly packed. A local grower, Houston, told me that an orchid planted in correctly you should be able to pick the plant up by the leaves it should remain in the pot. What’s your thoughts?

    Hi, thanks for sharing your video. I would like to know if we can reuse the old spagnum moss to repot my orchids. Thanks for your reply.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  5 років тому

      Hi Janice! I use New Zealand sphagnum moss, which is very long-lasting and a high quality moss. When I repot into a larger size pot, I simply add more NZ sphagnum. (I don't recommend this for regular, brown "basket" type moss, but I do for NZ sphagnum.) Happy growing!

    How do you repot a phalaenopsis orchid with big leaves but like 4 roots left in better grow special orchid mix? How do you know what size pot to use for something like that?

  • @pammace3820
    @pammace3820 5 років тому

    Hi Orchid Whisperer! I just don’t understand how an orchid can grow in water when orchid roots take in moisture but don’t let it out (well that’s my understanding anyway) and when to much moisture goes in they rot and die. I probably just need to watch more videos to find this answer! I have only ever grown them in bark. Do you think that bark is best to grow in when, like me, you live in England and tbh it’s rarely that hot or warm and so watering isn’t done much. In winter I may only water my orchids once a month. I believe bark doesn’t take up too much water or am I wrong? I’m new to it all but learning fast.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  5 років тому +1

      Hi Pam and thanks so much for watching! Since you grow orchids in bark with success I would continue to grow in bark. Water culture is not an easy growing method...it is actually quite challenging. Some Phals like it, and some don't. I love growing in bark and highly recommend it. Just stay on the path you're on with bark, it sounds like you're doing really well growing with it. Have a great day! Amy

    Is Cal-Mag and epsom salts all you use when it comes to fertilizing in moss or do you use others as well? How often to you fertilize them? I tried looking through your videos if you already have one on this but I couldn't find anything. Apologies if you have already covered this topic.

    Thanks for the video. How long do you expect the moss. to last before it needs replacement?

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому

      Hi Susan! I have grown my Cattleya in New Zealand sphagnum moss for 13 years, and just keep adding to it when I repot it in a larger pot. (I did a video on the last repotting on Aug 31, 2017.) It lasts for years, and unless it needs to be replaced, I keep it in the same moss. Sometimes I will replace the top portion if it looks like it needs to be, but what's in the pot stays in beautiful condition. Happy growing!
