    I hear the Happy in your voice and I just want to thank you for sharing your knowledge w/me. My baby sister passed away just over a month ago and I have an orchid that one of her daughters gave her. It began blooming a couple of days after she went into the hospital and it's still in bloom!!!! I have very little knowledge about this species of plant but love plants of most varieties. I wound up with this orchid and I'd like to do everything I can to make sure it continues to be happy because she was happy!

    Hi ORCHID WHISPERER fantastic channel you have a pleasant watch every time! Im fairly new to Orchids. My phaleonopisis is white its still in bloom with three petals still on there! Its growing areal roots on either side which is nice and they are becoming rather big and fat!
    Now the roots in the medium aint looking great so would you suggest when it finishes blooming altogether and the drop-off do you suggest me taking out the pot getting rid of all the other medium washing it clean in warm water and cutting the dead roots off and the brown ones? There are quite a few looks really healthy on top but underneath doesn’t look so good. I’m going to keep the stalks they are extremely green so hoping like you said in one of your videos that it will just continue to grow more and branch off.

    I really liked how you talked about misting that aerial roots and they're on the outside where they belong you know. And I liked how you said you water each one by what it needs - I once heard a lady say she watered her every 8 days with a fourth a cup of water - oh man desert dry! Then I met a man at a business and I said are those orchids for sale? He said no those are mine. I said are they alright they look dry? He said well I always heard you were supposed to shock them to get them to bloom - these poor things were half-dead and dry. They were phals and I tried to tell him but he was set in his ways.

    +Orchid Whisper. UGH your Orchids are amazingly GORGEOUS!! I absolutely LOVE your videos and soothing voice. I spoke to you I believe last year and mentioned that I got a mini Phal because I truly LOVE Orchids and wanted to learn to care for them!! Sadly I lost at least 3 last year but wasn't giving up. This February I got two mini Phals that went through both root rot and bud blast but they've hung in there. The larger mini grew a new leaf so I'm hopeful. My smaller one went through complete root loss again but I believe it's growing a new root. My question is.... I spray the roots everyday but they still dry out, should I continue spraying everyday and so sorry for the long message but if I can grow GORGEOUS Orchids like yours I will be SO happy!!💖😁🙏🙏🙏

    Hello, this is a great video. I have a question. I have a small orchid that was revived as a gift. It had about 8 flower buds and they all bloomed. I have 1 flower left and it has been about 2 months since I recieved it. I have it in my kitchen facing North West. It gets a lot of light and I water it about once a week. The leaves are a darker green and supple. Am I supposed to also water it with orchid feed?

    Nice Vanda! Might add one after seeing yours. I love ground orchids and oncidiums. For the bees! The key to having life, and having it more abundantly is in JOY. The Gentleman at the store was correct. Exude JOY in what you do caring for what you love and recieve the reward you deserve. LIFE, and LIFE more ABUNANDTLY! The view at 6;41 outside the window on the right side almost looks like a painting! Very serene.

    I kept orchids twenty one years ago. Now, much later i have them again. Nice video. I grow them now for two reasons, beauty, and food. a resource for honeybees. I have never had orchid honey before...........until now. Living creatures can be affected by peoples moods as you have power you do not realize you have. All living things react to pheremone signature. Keeping bees i can tell you, the only time i got stung was when i was not experiencing joy while tending the hive. Keep in mind WHY you do what you do, take joy in it during the process and have the most BEAUTIFUL garden. Joy creates beauty. Along with Knowledge. That artwork is nice. Did you paint it?

      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому

      Thank you for your comment...very well said. I can only imagine what orchid honey is like. :) And I totally agree...JOY is a wonderful thing, and everything reacts positively to it! My husband creates these paintings for me, and I enjoy sharing these with my viewers as well. Happy growing!

    I just re-potted my phal orchids with bark chips and pit them in the same plastic pot they were in and put that pot in the decorative pot. Was that a good call or not? Also should I put them in a colder room at night and warmer room in the day to help the grow a flower spike? I've had mine (I have 4 phals) for 2 years now and could not get them to rebloom. And one more thing, if I may, should I fertilize or give orchid food to them? And are they both in the same thing, food and fertilizer? Thanks a bunch ahead of time. I really want them to rebloom, they were given to me do mothers day and I would definitely want some more this year, but don't like that face that I can't get them to rebloom. 😞

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  5 років тому

      Hi! I grow my Phals in eastern facing windows and I don't move them around. They like dispersed morning sunshine. It sounds like you made the right call by repotting them, and if they still fit in the same plastic pot you bought them in, that's fine. I do recommend you fertilize them, I did a video last week on fertilizing, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/2U3Rayt3xNs/v-deo.html
      I also did a video last week about the fertilizers and supplements I use that you can find on my channel if you need that information. Happy growing and I wish you lots of growing success!

      Hi and thanks so much for watching! :) Trying to ID your orchids is hard if they're not labeled when you buy them. What I try to do is make sure I don't lose any orchid tags with the name of the orchid. If the orchid doesn't come with a name tag, I look up the orchid supplier's web site. Some of them have labeled pictures of their orchids. Dendrobiums are the hardest ones to find, if you don't have a name tag, it's unlikely you'll find the name. Have a wonderful day and happy growing!

      Hi! I just read that you were given an Oncidium. They need western (afternoon) sunlight...they like a lot of light. But while this one is acclimating to your home, keep it a few feet away from a western window and then move it closer to the window over the course of a week or two. If it's a young plant, keep it a few feet from the window until it starts growing well. (Younger plants are more sensitive to strong sun than mature ones.) Have a great day! :)

    It was lovely to read your reply. Actually in local nurseries no plant comes with labels. So i have to search the internet with the plant kept in front to know the type.

    Oh man it seems it's been awhile since a comment. I really hope that you get this 😮. My question is okay where, I mean, what state are you in? The reason I ask is that I live in New Hampshire 😛. Now, don't get me wrong,bi really love it up here, people and landscape really, really great! Okay, that said, the problem is that the the winter months are soooo long! Love, daylight time is very short and I'm watching your video and I'm thinking, look at that light! It's just awesome. So, here I am, I've got lots of cool plants but orchids are tough. Okay, so those are my concerns, please tell me what you think? Thanks so much and you're really great and fun!

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому

      Hi Teresa and it's so nice to hear from you! If you don't have much light, especially in the winter, you could always use grow lights. If there's an American Orchid Society chapter in your area, that's where I'd go for information on how to grow them in your area. I live in Tennessee, and you're right...there's a lot of light in my house. So I don't use grow lights, or I'd be glad to advise you. Have a great day and happy growing! :) Amy

    Hi, I have a question that I have yet to find an answer to. My orchids grow in a north facing garden window and do very well. When a flower spike is growing I make sure not to rotate the plant so the spike and buds will grow straight towards the light. However, once it is in full bloom I want to have the flowers face me so that I can enjoy them so I turn the plant around. The problem is that over time each flower slowly twists itself backwards to face the light. I have tried rotating the plant a little every few days to keep things equal, but that still makes it so I am not able to view those lovely Phal faces straight on. Every video I see of Phals shows the blooms facing one direction - straight to the viewer. Is there something I am missing? Thanks!

    Ooh..14 years. Ive been growing about the same. No UA-cam back then ;) I'm actually glad it wasn't around back then and I quickly learned that messageboards were as bad as UA-cam is now. A lot of people get a nbs plant to bloom and then they assume they 'can take credit' for that booming and that they know how to grow the plant all of a sudden. It's a blessing and a curse that orchid growers are so enthusiastic ;)
    My best piece of advice would be to check the cred of the people you're asking advice from and get a bunch of books and re-read those every year. You don't know what you don't know, you know? And if you think someone who's grown tens of thousands of plants is wrong, you might be missing somehting ;) I don't know why I've never found your channel before, but I love it and I love your sign-off. That really got my attention the first time I heard it.

      Hey I wanted to ask you something since you grow more naturally and might grow outside or your windows might get cold- have your orchids ever flushed purple when they got chilled a bit? From what I've seen in photographs, it's a purple flushing-not red like when they have high light.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 років тому

      Hi! I've not noticed this, but I keep my growing areas warm. When they start growing new leaves, they might have a purple tint to them. That's an interesting question, I wonder if it's just a reaction to cooler weather. Have a great day! :)

    • @missanna208802
      @missanna208802 6 років тому

      Oh I figured down there (assuming you're in the south because of the accent)that you might grow stuff outside as well. Yes, it's common for young growth to have red tint, especially if the plant is in light that is high for the plant or if they were recently moved from lower to higher. Dr Martin Motes says that when plants flush after being exposed to cold, that it's due to low magnesium, but someone else said he's wrong, and cited one source saying that high mag will increase the red. I wanted to see if you had ever tried that, but then I found the answers that back him up. The anthocyanins that show up when there is high mag are not the same ones that show up in the cold. (Or the ones that sometimes show up in normal temps with low mag). There are different ones that do different things, and then I went to his videos and he relayed at about 20 minutes in to the rough cut video and he talks about some vandas they imported from Taiwan that were deficient and turned purple and when they added mag..well I'll just let you watch that if you're curious instead of typing it all out here :)

She literally put hers near a drafty window in her bathroom and waters once every two weeks. She is not too big on orchids and she got hers to re bloom. Enjoy the foliage too. Hope this helps.

    Hi Amy, your videos are very helpful! I am new to orchids and am having trouble determining when to watermy two phals. I have them in a New Zeal. spagnum moss/bark mix and they're doing good except some air roots have turned brittle/shriveled and died while the rest are fine. I water when the roots in the pots (plastic with air holes on bottom and sides) ťurn silver grey. I water by soaking for about 20 seconds, then soak in fertilized water for about 15 seconds. They get indirwct sun to the side of a west facing window, please help. Thanks.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  7 років тому +2

      Hi and thanks so much for watching my channel! I have a video, "Watch me water my phalenopsis orchids in moss and bark" publish date Oct 12, 2017 that you may find helpful. It's hard to keep air roots hydrated, you can mist them with water between the times you water your orchids. I also have some beginner videos from Oct 17 and Oct 19, 2017 that you may like to watch. The indirect sun from a west facing window is a good place to grow a phal, so you've made a great choice there. :) If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Have a great day!

    Hi Amy, your vandas don’t get sun burnt on the windowsill? I was afraid mine would so I put up a white thin sheer curtain. I’d love to try water culture but it’s a research subject too. Hi Paula! My vandas get a lot of sun, for most of the day...and they don't get burnt. They thrive with lots of sunlight! And you're very wise to research water culture thoroughly before you try it. My vandas and dendrobiums do really well with it. Some of my phals like it, and some don't! So you're doing a smart thing to learn how to take care of the mounts first. :) Thanks so much for watching and for you sweet comment, and have a great day!

      Hi and thanks so much for watching! At this point, it's going to be easier for you to start with a new orchid. When all the leaves fall off, there's no photosynthesis for the plant to survive. Orchids don't like being moved around very much, so this may have been the case with yours. Also, sometimes they haven't been properly cared for before you receive them, and that can also cause the orchid to go downhill rapidly like this. I wish you lots of success on your next orchid purchase...it really is rewarding growing them! Have a great day! Amy

      Unfortunately I learned that hard way. In summer months they can be burned even in morning sunlight before 9 AM. Right now in late fall - early winter I think they could be in full sunlight whole day. I don't have windows on south side so I can't be sure about that. I have few on west side and they are happy with that.
      Anyways thank you for great videos, they helped me very much with water culture. Only difference is that I'm using diluted fertilizer all the time, not clear water.
      Happy growing!

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  7 років тому

      I learned this the hard way as well. I had a phal too close to a western window in the early summer...and I burned a leaf. If I placed a phal right now in that same spot, it would be fine. It's the hot summer sun that I have to be careful with. I'm so glad my videos have helped with your water culture. I think it's awesome that you can use diluted fertilizer all the time, everyone grows differently, and it's great that you've found what works for you. Thanks so much for your kind comment...happy growing! :)
