The regret from Pacino despite killing him is deep. This is a guy who fundamentally understood him on a base level. It's just that there were on opposite ends.
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid by Sam Peckinpah is similar in that thought
it wasnt regret, it had to be done, it was a mutual respect, nothing more nothing less.
Both would kill the other if need be. They had this common understanding.

This will always be the best ending ever in my opinion. As a viewer you can understand everything Vincent has gone through. He lost his marriage, colleagues, private life and possibly the only worthy opponent to his talents. This is the one story of his life to write a book about. Now he will ultimately face the boredom of every day life, chasing the other idiots around the block.
We're right there with him, because we just witnessed the greatest crime movie of all time, spent 3 hours getting to know the characters and saw how their story ends. We know we'll probably never see a movie like this again. So we're kind of trying to hold on to something and don't know what's next, too.

I remember when I visited my brother and he took me to see this movie. I was 15, he was 23. The theater had THX soundsystem and the famous shootout scene just blew my mind. This will always be one of my favourite films.

This scene was pretty awesome. As much as I wanted Neil to get away, Vincent was equally badass and ended him. When the bad guy offers his hand up, knowing it’s over, and the good guy takes it, is definitely awe inspiring. 👍🏼

When Neil holds out his hand, and Vincent takes it - but looks away - that's everything, the whole movie, right there. That's Neil, after a lifetime of hiding his feelings (what he perceived as weakness), finally giving himself permission to be vulnerable, and silently confessing to his sworn enemy that he was afraid to die. Then there's Vincent, who recognises Neil's fear but can't bring himself to look at him...he pities him enough to help him through his final moments, but he's immediately conflicted by that pity. How can he show mercy to a cold blooded killer? Then again, how can he ignore the plight of a dying man? Somehow, holding his hand but looking away is the best compromise he can think of...but as soon as he looks away, he is confronted by an even bigger problem.
When he looks away...where else is there to look to? What else is there to feel?
As Neil dies, Vincent realises that the troubles in his own life will only go on.

Totally nailed it!!! I always wonder if Neil had killed Hanna, would he have taken Hanna's hand in death.
In retrospect, everyone thinks Neil should have let Waingro live and get on with his life. But there was also a mistake made by Hanna. He should have never engaged that bank robbery and have a shootout in the middle downtown LA where the collateral damage was great and he lost one of his friends/partner, Bosco. The same drive that compelled Neil to go after Waingro was also present in Hanna, insisting they have the shootout as they came out of the bank and not allow them to get away, surveil and then capture them in a more advantageous location. Those two were very much alike.
Neil had lived a life where he avoided human contact out of necessity only to have Hanna comfort him for his last few breaths. It is like poetry

@Roadkill Films yeah it showed how he realized being tied down to someone or something it leads to bad decision making. Apparently he never learned it though because he went on to do something similar situations
@THE GADFLY GANG I'd argue he did learn it after what happened to Elisa, but as we see in Heat 1995, he's alone in that big house, it's as empty as he is inside, and I think that's metaphor of how alone he feels. I know he claims to Eady he isn't lonely, and he keeps in mind the iconic line of never getting attached to something you can't walk out on in thirty seconds flat, but I think he just kept telling himself that in order to mask his true feelings from himself, and once he spent that night with Eady on top of hill, the mask slipped. I like this personally as it does give some humanity to Neil, though I can understand why people prefer the idea of him being a stoic person due to his time in Folsom.
Its why endings of films are so important you can have 99% great movie, but if the ending sucks its like rat poison entire thing goes down the tubes.

It really bugs me that heat was not nominated for Academy awards, Or even any golden globes awards. At the very least there should have been nominations for editing, sound, cinematography, and maybe a best actor or supporting actor role. Everyone is great in this film

this film is forever an excellent masterpiece.
Over 3 hours long and it speeds by. The film had everything and it did not get an Oscar, just shows you how crap the whole award thing is. I still think it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. De Niro and Al are the titans of the screen, the whole thing in just pure class.
Heat played in Australian cinemas just last year. The sound was immense in there and it wasn't even imax surround. 10/10.

In Academy defense. If i dont get wrong this is the same year when Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Ed Wood and Shawshank Redemption was released. I mean, they are literally masterpieces of their respective directors.

The story is great, the music is epic the scene is awesome. Even though they were ultimate enemies he hold his hand while he was dying out of pure respect
the music is way ahead of it's time too. A few years later it was all the rage.

Whoa, the Music from Moby "God moving over the face of the waters" is the icing on the cake. Absolut brilliant. No modern Movie comes close to this masterpiece.
Yeah the music in this movie is just beyond. Playing Brian Eno's Force Marker during the robbery/police arrival was genius. That song is full of charged tension and badassery. A masterpiece just like this whole movie.
I saw this in the theatre in 1995 when it first came out, I had no idea what the movie was about except that it had 2 of my favorite actors in it. I walked out of that theatre absolutely blown away..I have never felt such satisfaction in both the screenplay and acting in any other movie since.

Same here. The best movie I ever saw and I knew that walking out of the theatre with my wife that Saturday night on January 6th, 1996.
Both are legendary actors, amazing movie, I give this movie a 10.

Hanna killed the only person he likely ever got along with.
True, though during the diner scene he did say this:
"You do what you do. I do what I gotta do. What happens if I am there and I got to put you away?........I won't like it. But, if it's between you and some poor bastard whose wife you're going to make into a widow, brother, you are gonna go down."
Their characters were both in the Marine Corps. Even though they were on opposite sides of the law, there was still that mutual 'brothers-in-arms' respect present. That's why Vincent stayed with him and didn't let him die alone.
Hanna opened up to Neil that he pretty much has a shitty life. He just killed a guy he actually respected and liked, and now what? He did his job but it's back to feeling alone again.
They needed each other. All they are is the score and the chase. When it ended, there's nothing left for either of them. "All a warrior wishes for is a truly worthy opponent" (Art of War)
Yes! Every time I watch this I wonder whether the reason Vincent doesn't look at Neil as he's holding his hand is because he doesn't want him to see the regret or even envy in his eyes. Because in the end, they had the same terrifying life question to answer if they survived. "What becomes of my life now without him?" But Neil will never need to have that answer while Vincent is ironically sentence to life trying to get it. So Neil did get away after all. And it was Vincent who is in prison. He didn't look at Neil because he was afraid Neil would see in his eyes that he wanted to switch places with him.
Extremely moving scene..reminiscent of blade runner final scene with Rutger and Harrison.. "like tears in the rain".. The spiritual connection between two and the moving music 🙏🏻❤️
This ending always gets me and in my opinion Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are the best actors and best friends of all time hands-down.

Really don't know whether I prefer 'Collateral' or 'Heat'.. but one thing is for sure: DeNiro and Pacino deserved a monument of a movie together..and God knows: Michael Mann delivered a Hit for the ages!!!!

The final scene is one of the best criminal drama endings I have ever seen. Both the legendary and incredibly talented actors are my favorites, but Robert De Niro’s character is somehow closer, that’s why I wish Neil had survived. However, the sense behind is much deeper. Firstly, Neil is an outlaw - a ruthless robber with an impressive criminal history; secondly - he is a kind of gambler. Like a gambler, he is constantly balancing on the edge by increasing the risk of the operations and the value of potential trophies. His excitement and self-confidence know no bounds, but any game has two options: either you win, or you lose. For Neil failure is not acceptable. Neither is surrender. The only possible scenario is “Win or Die”.
The moment of Neil’s death is just heartbreaking. The spectators can see how a confident professional who never ever assumed the possibility of defeat becomes vulnerable. Uncatchable Neil McCauley is now slowly fading away, heavily bleeding from his mortal wounds. Outstanding performance of De Niro makes the moment exceptionally realistic and touchable. You can notice a horrified look, intermittent breathing (even the relevant abdominal movements are shown close-up). Undoubtedly, he is in immense pain. We can feel his fear of death.
When Vincent comes closer, Neil's eyes represent both a desperation about being overpowered and acceptance of fate at the same time. His last words: “I told you I’ll never go back” clearly state that he rather chooses death than be arrested. Could there be another exit? Probably not.
Vincent, whose constant battle with criminals ruined his life, took away a family and in fact turned himself into obsessed animal fanatically hunting for a prey - will be unwavering. Like the quote says: “In a perfect world, it would be different, but the world is not perfect”. Their paths crossed in the wrong time - two of the closest souls and two of the worst enemies. I am sure, Neil would have killed him if there was a chance to make the first shot. Neil’s journey is over, but the next round of Vincent’s own hell has just begun. He stares anxiously into the distance, realizing that he is actually dead inside.
I have seen a lot of criminal movies with pretty powerful death scenes but only two made me completely speechless - John Woo’s “The Killer” (1989) and “Heat”. Could not stand without tears. The magnificent performance of Pacino and De Niro, suspenseful storyline as well as beautiful music makes “Heat” a true masterpiece!
Wonderful acting, interesting storyline, and near perfect cinematography: wholesome film. All done without CGI, gone are those days.

I don’t really blame Neil for going after Waingro though. I mean the guy was a POS in this fictional world. It was better without him alive to cause more chaos. Besides, we wouldn’t have got this poetic ending if he didn’t go after him.
Also, I love that song that starts playing at 5:15 and Neil saying, “Told you I was never going back.”
And Vincent being pretty sad about shooting him because of the mutual respect they had, always enjoyed that.
God Moving Over the Face of the Waters - Moby
Dealing with Waingrow was an itch Neil HAD to scratch ... It wasn't like him at all, it wasn't professional, but it had to be done.
Neil wouldn't attach himself to anything he couldn't drop if he felt the heat around the corner- but getting Waingro was about honor which is eternal. For Trejo and his girl, for Cherito and the driver, for fucking everything up for him and Chris. Some guys could even make that big of a mess and Neil might have let it go but Waingro was also a little shit.
If Heat was released today, it would have been a major flop.
The movie audience of today, simply can't handle delayed gratification or anything that requires thinking.

The bank shoot out was right in front of my office in down town Los Angeles... they had huge bodyguards between shots ..nobody could get close to any of the actors. But it was cool to see them that close...

They filmed the shooting scenes on weekends as that's the only days the city would let them film.
I remember seeing this in the theaters at roughly 10 years old. I was instantly captivated and obsessed and has remained my favorite film to this very day.

Midnight Run and Heat: De Niro plays a loner who, for a very brief but precious time, meets someone he forms a genuine connection with, just to lose them forever
i found it interesting that McCauley seems significantly more competent than Hanna through pretty much the entire movie. even in this final standoff, Neil gets the better of him, establishing a defensive position where he knows his path of ingress, locating him with his shadow, and waiting patiently in cover. the shots underscore that Neil understands the threat posed by the runway lights; meanwhile, Hanna moves out into the open, with no cover, and is taken completely by surprise by the lights. Neil has a clear shot on Vincent, but Vincent somehow manages to pirouette 90 degrees and hit McCauley first. to me this scene is Hanna being completely outclassed by McCauley - but McCauley can't bring himself to pull the trigger.
Maybe he wanted to be taken out by someone he respected and saw as his equal. He basically lost the only people he saw as his family and I guess now that everyone knows who he is he can’t just hide forever.
I couldn't get enough of this movie. I just love everything about it. From start to finish. Even the soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece. I hope to buy a blu ray copy of this film. It should be on everyone's collection.

A gritty and edgy film that holds you to the very end. Every student aspiring to be an actor should have to watch this and films like it in order to graduate. Pacino and De Niro don't come no better. The level of talent and surrealism that they bring to roles is unmatched.

Beyond friendship, this film tells a story about family.
Hanna and McCauley are not friends, circumstances have turned them into adversaries. They both respect each other, but as they proclaim in the cafeteria scene, neither of them hesitates when the time comes.
The two are opposite sides of the same coin, they can see themselves reflected in each other's sides. They both have the same level of determination in their work, almost obsessive.
And an important detail that is often overlooked is that they have both been in the Marine Corps. When Hanna shoots McCauley, he feels that he's killed a brother, not a friend or an adversary. Paccino is truly a giant in a movie filled with memorable performances

Joe Pesci is up there with them. Dinero has just about had equal duo roles with each of them respectively. Damn near even in the number of films with either Pesci or Pachino. The Irishman is the only film where all three of them have played a role together.
Camera, script, acting, music - everything is just great. What a fantastic film.
McCauley was a pro, but couldn't match the combination of coffee and cocaine of Hanna. The reflexes were another level.

I watched this film on the big screen back in early 1996, an afternoon screening on the upper west side in NYC.The movie had been out a couple of months by that stage and i wanted to watch it in its proper setting before it ended its run.
I remember walking around Manhattan listening to the Heat soundtrack on cassette non-stop.

Since I saw this Grand Finale in the Movie Theater... Twice by the way, I had 13 year's. On this Day I can't stop seeing this movie until it finish, I love this Ending. In his Gen This is a Masterpiece.

Great ending, but Pacino got lucky. Deniro was a killer, had the defensive ground, and the element of surprise. 9/10 times, he wins.

Yep. It was to exemplify the theme that they were both the best at what they did, so they cancelled each other out as equal forces. The only change to the scene that made into the final cut was that Neil just doesn't shoot at the decisive moment.
I reckon the inspiration is the relationship between Hector and Achilles. Neither wanted to be a part of what eventuated. It’s a modern day Illiad.
The inspiration was actually a real story based in Chicago. A cop and professional bank robber knew each other and actually had coffee together days before the robbers last job where he said I hope it's not you that finds me because I'll go down shooting. The cop killed him in an alley after he tried to rob a bank

My favourite film of all time. It’s incredible setting for the finale, but Michael Mann likes realism, and to him a soundstage is heresy!
You can still create realism in a soundstage. The main benefit is a controlled environment of light and sound, which in an industry where time is money, should never be overlooked.
Having said, I agree this movie will forever go down as one of the very best.
@@IndieBFilms but it’s not like he only uses maybe one or two sets and the rest in real world locations. I don’t think he uses any set at all throughout the entire film. Each and every scene as far as I can make out is in a real, working space. Which is incredible for a director, not to to mention it’s length of 2hrs 30 mins.
@@lvsarmy2012 I don't disagree, he likely did only favour location shooting as you suggest. I'm just pointing out, that kind of bold style can often create a logistical nightmare for production, hamper the creativity of other departments and in some cases actually end up being counter productive.
There's a misconception that stages are used only for creating fantastical sets that are purely fiction. Sure they're used for that, but I've worked on productions where the Director liked an existing location, but instead we ended up building it like for like as a set on a stage - because it allowed the Director/Cast more breathing space, not to mention more manipulation over lighting and free movement of camera.
Locations are great, and sure they're sometimes more favourable. But any large scale budget Director that has access to a stage and dismisses it outright is seriously missing a trick.
@@IndieBFilms he filmed the incredible bank shootout sequence in downtown LA on a Sunday apparently which is hardly surprising given how busy it would be in the week.

Going to see this in the cinema today. Seen it a number of times since its release but still find myself watching replays on this site.
Total advantage was with DeNiro.....being chased in the dark he could have picked the guy off anywhere.They shoulda shown him get away for a part 2!
Two great actors.
The fact that the De Niro didn't go down to the "ground" shows the respect.
the music that plays at the end of this scene is absolutely utterly spellbinding. its impossible to watch this film and not feel chills

Two masters at their craft (being portrayed by two masters at their craft). Imo one of the most "Bro Code" endings of all-time. There's no celebration or gloating from Hanna. No speeches or melodrama from McCauley. Just a quiet respect between two professionals. Absolutely perfect writing and direction by Michael Mann.
This was such a great movie. Fantastic Performances.Brilliant Script.

I've seen this film since I 1st saw it in theaters upon its release....many many times. Maybe as an older man...Watching this after quite some time...the end when Neil holds up his hand and Vincent doesn't hesitate to take it...left me with tears in my eyes. I always wondered why he shot him so many times....then it hit me... that Vincent was granting his wish...to never go back.....because that would have been an even worse slower death for Neil. It's strange how, after committing murder and larceny that Vincent still felt for Neil. He sensed that they were both different sides of the same coin but had just taken different paths In life. Their focus and determination and dedication was the same like they were twins. Beautiful score and slow pull back from the camera to see it out.
This is a masterpiece. Bobby was doing great as ‘the bad guy’ and the words at the end keep on hitting every time. Specially when the Moby song kicks in. Masterpiece.
Pacino killing Deniro was the most epic moment in movie history
Couldn’t have asked for a better, climactic ending between these 2 legendary actors. It’s something all of us fans had been waiting to see for a long time.
The Moby soundtrack makes this scene way more emotional and couldn't imagine a better ending.

Remember when Hollywood produced movies that were well written, superbly directed and with actors whose presence dominated the screen? That were so good that you watch them repeatedly and are still watching scenes from them nearly thirty years later?
Today’s Hollywood doesn’t.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who recognizes that today’s cinema does not come anywhere close to back then. There’s just a whole different feeling I get watching older movies. You can actually relate to them unlike today’s movies.
A masterpiece.
Pacinos character said he had a dream where all the dead, “bloated” bodies he helped put away/kill were all in one place and look at him just as the his dream ends. In this scene, the bad guy is practically dead and slouched only not staring at him, but shaking his hand. That’s why there’s that moment where after he passes away, there’s like this breeze, along with pacino’s character sighing almost as if relieved. As if after that day, the cop would never have that dream again and released his inner demons by shaking the hand of the one person who wasn’t another dog pacino had to put down. Like if all the killings and being focused too much in stopping bad guys took a toll in his life. I love this movie
