I have an 05 Honda Pilot. My left lower balljoint just went out today, and I am just going to replace the whole control arm and ball joint assembly. I am glad I found this video!
Your videos are professionally filmed and explained, the Very Best on UA-cam. Have a parts list ready to order from 1A Auto of course! Thank you. John 3:16
The best video performance I've seen on a Honda pilot great work was very helpful
I just did this today on our 05. Very easy! I highly recommend the ball joint tool 👍
just installed my new cv axles i ordered from you guys on my 2007 honda pilot, recieved them within 4 days and installed today. clicking is gone and im super happy i was able to get such a great price on them. while i was installing them i could see that my ball joints are shot so im gonna be ordering the control arms from you guys. watching this video, i feel confident to do it myself again. thanks for the video guys and i look forward to doing future businees with you.
+bevo rob Thank you for your order! We'd love to hear about your experience. Here's a link to leave us a review on Google: goo.gl/i5JFNY
This helped a bunch man. And I got the ball joint tool for $20 at Harbor Freight in my town after trying for 30 minutes to get ball joint out with a pickle fork and hammer.
+Kyle Grunert Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
You put the old bolts back in. Your directions say to use new hardware ?
The key to the job is to install the new LCA in the order presented here. Do the rear bolt first, and attach the ball joint nut last. Otherwise, you won't be able to get everything to line up and bolts won't go in.
Tried that. No go for me
Fantastic video. Very helpful!!!! Thanks. Hope you have one bleeding the brakes on the same car.
At 3:24 watch your fingers lol he got lucky haha
when nuts and bolts are removed and are going to be used again, it is a great idea to clean them on a bench grinder with a wire disc installed .it takes all the oxidation off and install is so much easier.
Don’t do this. That’s how you strip off the zinc or chomate and seize them.
Video is good on disassembly. Also has the correct seq for install: rear inner bolt, knuckle nut, front inner bolt. However, getting control arm inserted in front was very difficult. Ultimately, tied a rope to car frame and control arm and pulled it together using rope technology (knots, twisting the rope tight, etc.) In video, it is made to look much easier than my actual experience. Not sure I will do the other side.
Just did my struts and end links 2 days ago, and my lca yesterday. If you follow the video, it may work. But my problem was that the joint separator tool wasn't long enough to cover the stud and push it without slipping off, even after hammering it.
So, I removed the axle nut (36mm) with an impact (breaker bar with jack handle over it wouldn't do it). Removed the 2 bottom bolts on the struts, and the brake line/abs sensor cable brackets. Removed the brake caliper and hung it by a bungie. Then I removed the axle. You gotta twist the knuckle off the strut to do it, and rotate the knuckle away as you wiggle/pull on the axle. Lightly hammer out the axle bolt.
Then with everything out of the way, I held up the knuckle in one arm, and beat the side (not the top or bottom) of the ball joint area and it popped out. You really gotta smash it hard. Then remove the 2 bolts and LCA, replace LCA, torque the 2 bolts, add the castle as tight as possible with a cotter pin, put it all back together.
Torque for the front (up/down) LCA bushing is 83 ftlbs. The rear (lateral) is 69 ft lbs. The ball joint you tighten hard as possible. Strut bolts are 120 ft lbs. Axle is 210 ft lbs. Spec is 240 ft lbs but I felt like I was gonna strip it so I think 210 was enough. Snug the caliper bolts and cable brackets, not loose, not over tight.
Depending on how difficult getting your ball joint and the arm out, I'd undo the main hum nit and tap it in a bit as so not to have your CV boot pop off from the main housing. It happened to me because my ball joint was a real pain and even more so to work on that CV boot and bearings as well. Install the back part of the arm 1st and the rest goes in fairly easy.
Ball joint remover was very inexpensive from the Harbor freight around $7
Oh my gosh you make it look easy but I know getting those bolts off is not gonna be easy for me!!
Notice how many video cut outs he had during the install. Yes it is a PIA!
I have a 2003 pilot...the replacement control arm knuckle nut from 1A I received is 21mm. However, the original nut is 22mm??? Go figure. So be aware...19mm on this video is not on all models from 2003-08.
What size ball joint press tool is that? That one i bought is tool small. My joint is stuck pickle fork not working. Tried removing the inner 22mm nut, thought that might help, it did not. Thx for any help
This video was helpful in doing the job. But the part I ordered from 1A doesn’t have the boot all the way up the ball joint like this one. Looks like there is a metal ring around the boot. Am I supposed to remove that metal ring and slide the boot up? Am I supposed to grease it too?
What size is your Ball Joint Separator/Popper?
what do you mean by load the suspension with vehicle weight? Did you lift it? the axle looks tilted in video. Should it be level?
Could I save money and just to replace the bushings
Yes, but you will not improve the handling. You must replace all the fittings compliance bushings, new ball joints, etc.
Couldn't a manual separator (pickle fork) take the place of a ball joint press?
very helpful video except the looping music started to make me go insane, I wish there was a way to turn it off
How do I change the passenger rear subframe/cradle for Honda Pilot 07?
Thank you!
Hello. I assume the car needs an alignment after this service, yes?
How long do you estimate the job will take to replace one control arm?
Why does your package NOT include the nut and bolts that you mention NEED to be replaced ? never mind. I just watched the rest of the video and you clearly used the old bolts. I'll do the same
mechanic said my lower control arm bushing is cracked for my acura tsx (120, 000 miles). Car runs fine and no strange noise. Should I replace lower control arm? Or should I wait until I hear noise.
Will cost around $500 to replace here in NYC area. Does that seem about right
The bolt which passes through the compliance bushing gets torqued to 83 ft lbs and the bushing in the front gets torqued to 69 ft lbs(like you said).
+ForeignerPhan Thank you for the added tip! Have a great day. 1aauto.com
How are you going to get a torque wrench up in such a small clearance? Also it's going to be next to Impossible getting the correct torque value in addition to worrying more about getting the castle nut through that hole and having it tight at the same time
I noticed said 69 ft lbs on both sides and that's wrong! 83.2 ft lbs on the farthest screw which is the compliance bushing bolt and 69 ft lbs the other side closest to the ball joint.👍🏼
+Toni Starks Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
When you put the ball joint back in using the jack stand, did you make sure that bolt is as far in as possible before putting that castle nut back on?
+holyhyrax Yes, you want to make sure that ii is seated correctly. We carry the lower control arm shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them www.1aauto.com/acura-mdx-honda-pilot-control-arm-with-ball-joint-pair-front/i/1asfk00937?UA-cam&CTA+Comment&FKelyYIm2do
Looked like the bushing pivot bolts were reused.
Any thoughts on reusing lower control arm bolts? Online I’ve read mixed thought on it but in the video he uses the old ones and doesn’t mention it
+John Doe Thanks for checking us out! New bolts are not necessary if the original bolts are still in fine condition.
@@1AAuto Do you know what size the bolts are?
Is an alignment needed after replacing the control arm?
+SalLovesChoad You should get the vehicle aligned after the repair has been performed. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
Yes
What is the size of the bolts for the LCA?
90118S0XA01 & 90118SX8T00
Oh I think they're 19mm and 21mm lol
Exelent
I'm sorry 19mm don't fit in my 06 pilot have 21mm 🤔
Try to do it in the grown 😭
Thanks for the video, however the lower control arm got the best of me. For some reason I cannot manipulate the ball joint making this a impossible task. Any advise?
Hey! I did it in the exact order that the video did as well and I was able to get it on there
So, don't use new bolts then?
+Excomunicater If the hardware is in good shape then you can reuse them.
Lose the music. Love A1 videos otherwise
+Yukon Thanks for the feedback!
What a cringe fest lol
Nice video!
