    Very helpful video. But one crucial tip is missing which I learned the hard way. At 10:50 when you are putting the top plate back, there is an arrow sign on the plate that needs to point towards the engine bay (so on driver side, the arrow should point to passenger side and from passenger side strut the arrow points to driver seat). This is needed coz top plate is not flat and it needs to align with the body at that angle. If not done properly, you can still get away with the install but people are complaining about rattling noise later and once you have driven few miles with the bad alignment, you will need to replace the bearing as well. So please pay attention to this step.

    Tip regarding spring compressors: I borrowed spring compressor tool kit from Autozone but I realized one pair was not enough. People on honda forum were discussing using 2 pairs and that's what I did and it worked out fine. Basically if you can get 4 coils on one spring it gets easier but it's hard to get all 4 coils on opposite sites coz the tool rod interferes with the plates. So start with 3 coils on opposite ends and when you compress it enough, you can now use the 2nd pair to compress 4 coils from opposite sides. If it's not possible to get 4 coils, you can get top 3 in one compressor and bottom 3 (opposite end) on other compressor.

    Just putting it out there that for newer pilots, maybe 2009-2015 (mine is 2011), the big bolts on the lower portion were bigger than 22mm. I didn’t have anything bigger, but I made a 15/16” socket work.

      First I presoaked the threads and nuts and used a wire brush in the threads. Then I took a propane torch and heated the nut for a minute. It then broke loose with some effort and but the and nut spun off quite easily. If no torch, an impact wrench and a pair of vice grips usually works.
      And my 2007 Accord didn't have a place for a wrench near the joint. Don't know why this vehicle had it.

    @1A Auto: Repair Tips & Secrets Only Mechanics Know I assume you have the Spring Compressor with the Hex Bolts ends opposite from one another. Was it because of having issues with getting the Compressor Tool to grab hold of 4 Springs or in my case the Compression Tool all thread rod is bottoming out on the Strut plate. Also did you have to do a lot of tightening on the Spring Compressor because I am having an issue on a 2007 Pilot with the Spring not Compression enough and I cracked down on the Compression Tool but could not get the four Spring coils like you did to install the Spring onto the new Strut. It is the driver's side which you said is harder

    FYI: Before you put the strut unit into your car, you need to prepare to deal with the weight of this strut. It is real pain in the **** to put it in. Removing from the car is very easy; but to put it in is hard because you have to align the strut unit to fit into the 3 nut holes and to make sure it does not damage the outer cv joint boot. I have to get help from my friend in order to install it successfully today. This strut is very heavy and I am not surprise because the SUV is weight from 4 tons to 4.5 tons.

    Maybe a dumb question, but went to do both struts and shocks yesterday evening, and just grabbed the new assemblies and aligned the bottoms and got the top bolts through, didn't think to check the top plate with three bolts for front/back, just figured they only fit one way and that the new ones came ready to install. Is it possible to install the top wrong? There is a white mark on both aiming forward by the center nut, but I cant see the top plate now that they are installed and one strut makes a little bit of noise when turning, they are monroe. Wheels look seem to have good camber and it drives well.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  3 роки тому

      +Greg H Thanks for checking us out! Some struts do have a particular way they need to install to prevent any unnecessary stress on the strut itself. It is hard to say if that is the cause of the noise but it would be a good idea to check and ensure that they are lined up correctly and see if that fixes the noise you are having. If the strut has a bearing in the mount up top, you can install the top portion lining up with the mark and then rotate the bottom to line up with those mounting points. Check out this video for some more information on this: ua-cam.com/video/YyEGV3d3jb8/v-deo.html

    Would this works with the rental spring compressor from AutoZone? I tried this last year on my 05 MDX, compressed it with the AutoZone kit all the way, but when removed the top plate the spring pop out a bit more, there's no way I can get the strut assembly on it.

    • @justinho6922
      @justinho6922 7 років тому

      Update, I had issue using the MacPherson strut spring compressor rent from AutoZone last year. Tried again this time, same issue. I had to go rent another set to get the job done, it requires lots of work. But looking at this video again, it seems this spring compressor is more compact and able to grip three coils each side while the MacPherson's design doesn't allow you to do 3 coils on one side but not the other side. Would you mind sharing what spring compressor was used in this video? Also there's a completed KYB assembly available on eBay now, this will cut down a lot of labor and the cost is reasonable cheap at $335 shipped for both. I think I paid $220 for KYB struts, $40 for new KYB strut adapter kit and $120 to rent the tools plus 2hrs labor just to assemble the strut.

The only KYB part I stay away from now is their upper strut mounts since I've read waaaay too many problems with them over the last couple of years.

I bought the KYB, but I couldn't compress it with the tool rent from AutoZone. So I bought a complete set from UNITY for $135 ea ending at $270 but it the worse setup ever. My heart want to drop when I go about 25mph over a 1.5" drop on the street, I hear a big thumps like back in the days slamming the car down all the way on cheap coil over. Now a year over, I'm going to replace it with the KYB.

    • @ForeignerPhan

      The whole assemblies are sometimes a mixed bag as the strut itself and/or mounting hardware are inferior. I like KYB and I was thinking about going with their complete assemblies for my '05 Pilot(although I've used my spring compressor a handful of times on my previous vehicles) until I learned waaaay too many people had been having problems with their upper mounts...both on the complete assemblies and the mounts they sell separately. I already have the KYB struts and I'm gonna go OEM in regards to the strut bearings and select upper mount hardware...stuff which I swap-out when it's strut replacement time.

      The whole assembly is actually supposed to save you time when installing but it's usually more expensive as it brings more new components, not just the struts, and this is where you pay more. Some people opt to re-use their hats, boots, bump-stops and springs if they're still in good shape.

      @ForeignerPhan: Try and apply some grease on your top hats if needed or if they have bearings and this usually extends the life of the top hats/bearings. Good luck.

      +raymond martinez Thanks for watching! It all depends on the shop, but you could expect to pay for parts plus 2 hours of labor in most cases.
