- Fuel pump replacement: 2 to 3 hours ($300 / $700 / $1200)
WARNING: Check the fuel pump wire connection. If bad replace it. Our new pump burned out in 3,000 miles. PN: LNC 3360CA for a connector that can be spliced in. ($25 eBay used / $135 eBay new / $185 local).
I helped my brother replace the fuel pump in his 2003 Jaguar XJ8, X308 series. The hardest part of the job is getting the fuel lines disconnected. There are a few other parts that are hard as well, mainly things that can cause damage to the vehicle.
The 2nd time I pulled the tank, I did not have to disconnect the trunk lifts.
Pump: JLM20756 ($385+ Failed in 60 days).
Stepped hose: NND 6070AB ($85+)
This process should work on most XJ series vehicles that have the fuel tank behind the rear seat and the pump in the tank. Cars from 1998 - 2003 for sure.

Just ordered my pumps, I need two. Thanks again for the help Robert, you have been indispensable in building my '99 XJR. Watching you take apart the door panels, and all kinds of little stuff saved me so much time and loot. Can't thank you enough.
You are welcome.
Firstly, I have been a STEELER fan since 1973! Thank you Robert for the excellent explainer and careful video focus moments. Well done, keep them coming. GO STEELERS!
thanks for watching.
I just did the fuel pump replacement on my 1999 XJ8. I tried to get the tank leaned forward without detaching the fuel lines underneath. One of the fuel lines broke while I was trying to get the tank forward enough to do the pump replacement. I got some rubber hose for fuel injection and put it on the steel fuel line ends with hose clamps. Working perfectly.
Congrats. Thanks for watching and sharing.
AlwAys love your videos-very helpful and thorough.... I ended up cutting an L in the rear deck panel to remove the fuel pump. Made life much easier but not recommended.... I tached a couple of welds when I was done and have been enjoying life since(did this a couple of years ago!)-until of course the pump burned up again.... will get an oem one this time-will try to find one for $200 something like you did!
thanks for sharing.
That was a nasty job indeed but after seeing the tutor i managed to repair it.. Thanks Robert!
Thanks for watching
Great job Robert, your brother owes you BIG TIME!!!!!
Yea, that Jag is a mess.
My Jag is a 2000 Vanden Plas, XJ8, X305, and the fuel pump went out. Although I decided to go through the package tray I found this video very helpful. I had to cut out a spot about 6 X 8 inches directly over the tank. I didn't have to remove the tank or gas lines. Thanks Robert for all your helpful videos.
You are welcome.
I am in the process of doing exactly that right now. Why couldn't these sadistic engineers put in an access panel?
Same here. Im cutting about 10" square just to the side of speaker mounts. Its a little hairy with a dremel slinging sparks. Hopefully it goes smooth after this
That is a nice brother in law.
LOL OK
great video. very helpful.
thanks
You are welcome
really appreciate this very detailed video
You are welcome
Exactly like my wife's 1996 XJ6 Van den plas. I put in the second pump. I got an original pump brand and model fuel pump from Napa for ≈$200. and it was a beast of a job to do.
I pumped the fuel out of filler neck instead of from the fuel filter, a better idea. It won't start now and it might be the third (just months old, replaced by others) that is the current problem.

Interesting.
You can always tell an XJ 8 owner. His back yard is full of old fuel pumps.😉
Yikes!
Very helpful video, unfortunately someone mangled the lines on my jag before I even got to it.
Sorry to hear that. 🤕
Yes thank you I'm having to do a job on the same car and it is a easy one compared to my old truck thanks for the insight😊
Glad to help
Thank you Robert
You are welcome.
I will be doing this job in a couple of weeks time not looking forward to it at all but Jaguar is worth it
Cool, thanks for watching.
I definitely subscribe to your channel awesome video buddy
Thanks for watching
Robert, Thank you very very much!
You are very welcome
Please Please Please keep working on Jaguar X Type and XJ8 VIDEOS I love JAGS !
😳🤦🏾♂️
Gracias por la información me fue de gran ayuda, voy a realizar el mismo trabajo y una afinación completa con servicio de inyectores.
¿Por qué necesita hacer un servicio de inyectores?
Hey Robert! Your videos are really well informed. Well here's a question... my jaguar is an xj8 year 2001 and the check engine light is on but the motor is good. I hear a loose thumping and the smell of gasoline when I drive. Can I replace that at home?
ua-cam.com/video/NhtUXZTurzo/v-deo.html
We will try to pass a small arm over the tank.
We are going to remove the nut that holds the pump. Then you just need to disconnect the collar and the pipe. Maybe we can do it without dismantling the tank.
I'll tell you when I've done Robert.
ok
we managed to change the pump by passing the arm into the tank without dismantling.
Just by removing the hatch on it.
On the other hand, when we transferred the gasoline into the tank we had an incident.
A spark on the battery terminal...
The car caught fire.
It's a real shame because the repair was completed and the pump was working.@@RobertDIY
Thank you so much. My neighbor can see it now. He's fixing the same issue.
you are welcome.
Thanks robert for the very good video. I decided to seal my tank as there was some surface rust inside. I did not now there was a check valve inside the tank, on the filler tube. sealant blocked it. I had to get a new tank !!! Do you know if this part is critical for good functioning of car ? I am struggling to reconnect the fuel lines (I changed the 2 connectors on tank) and I am not able to have them clicked ! Does the pipe collar need to click into the connector ? Definitely the worse experience I ever had !
If you can't pull them back off, they are on.
Thank you so much for sharing this.... I just sealed my gas tank and I masked off the filler neck that extends into the tank that contains the anti-siphon check ball. I also masked off the return hose and spout next to base of fuel pump as well fuel line from fuel pump. I mixed the red coat for about 30 mins then rotated it and let it drain. The red kote looked tacky so removed the tape easily. It’s ready to go back in at this point. I also ended up lowering the rear suspension and differential-took about an hour and made life very easy with regard to disconnecting the fuel lines.
I have a question, when doing this on my car, one of the sending unit wires came undone not from the tank as I took both off but rather from the car itself - the wire that came off has the same black plastic end that goes to the sending unit on your video but my problem is with the other end which has a male connector on it. I need to find out where to pull this connector in on the car itself, wiring harnes, plug, I do not know, any help would be great.
I don't know what you are talking about. Either identify the part in the video or send me a picture of it.
Wow, nasty job. Good job on documenting it, Robert.
Just kept getting worse. lol
Thanks Robert. One question do you know where's the cabin filter is 2003 jaguar xj8
I have no idea.
Tight squeeze for sure. Some have the filter on the side of the take and even better under the hood. But hey thats how they make money is making it hard for the DYI guy.
They succeeded on this one.
made a start doing mine today, christ those fuel lines take some getting at. got em WD40'd up ready for tomorrow. you really need one inch diameter arms with a couple of extra elbows. why the hell didn't jaguar simply put a removable panel in the parcel shelf. no way was i gunno get the grinder out and do that bodge like other video's. thanks for yours, it's like anything, once you've done it once it's easier the next time.
Not for me. It was hard all 3 times. LOL
@@RobertDIY haha yeah. some other muppet on another video commented that it's easy and only a half hour job.
Very interesting however I need to replace the sender unit on my 2003 XJ8 VP. Unfortunately I am unable to find the detail if removal and replacement of the sender unit - can this be added the the fuel pump replacement video?
Not my video.
Hi Robert, love your videos! I nhave to do this job on my 2000 XJ8. I notice in this video that in it, you state that you were going to try to get that tank pivoted forward enough to access the pump with out disconnecting the quick connect fuel lines. Did that work - did they connect properly when you pushed the tank back in? Or did you have to go under the car in the parking garage and disconnect them to get the tank pivoted and back in? Thks!
Huh? Did you watch the video? I guess I need to watch it and edit it to clear that up.
ua-cam.com/video/fZcEdwlJrMs/v-deo.html
You HAVE to disconnect the lines. If you try to move the tank, you will break the fuel line and have to add replacing the broken fuel line to the task.
@@RobertDIY Thanks Robert - clear no off to do the job - will let you know how it goes. BTW - I had to replace the dash board wire harness which was something of a challenge, but I took my time and got that task done though it was tedious (replaced the heater core while the dash was out of the car). Will send some pics when I'm done with the fuel pump. Love driving this car!
Is there any way to loosen the tank in the trunk and slowly bend forward (or backward) to access the pump without disconnecting the fuel lines underneath at the tank? British Leyland engineering is pretty thorough and mechanically sensible so I would think that they possibly allowed for fuel pump replacement basically just through the trunk.
Did you watch part 1 of 2?
@@RobertDIY I've watched both of them. Great technical awareness of the pitfalls but still hoping to give it my best effort.
I can get the quick release tool on the fuel lines below the tank and even hear “clicks” when I push in. Also using a long tire iron to press in the on the quick release tool. The problem is that for the life of me I can’t pull the fuel line out. Is it just a matter of pulling hard enough or is there another secret? Thanks and fantastic video.
Some come out easier than others. Pull straight and hard
Robert DIY thanks again!
Hi Robert - another question: I ran the car out of gas and the fuel pump wouldn't function. I added fuel tank cleaner, let it sit for 24 hrs and got the fuel pump working again. That said, I am cycling through fuel filters to evacuate the sludge (tank cleaner is enzyme based). I noticed when I turn the car on and it's idyling, if I run the engine up to 3K it starts to cough and buck. I presuming if I continue with replacing fuel filters a comple of time more the eproblem should subside when I get the kunk out (I know the additive is working as the filter is at least an ounce heavier after draining).
Do you think the coughing and bucking is still fuel pump related even though it's working? Thanks!
Running out of fuel should not damage the fuel pump unless it was already weak and dying. I would read the codes with a code reader.
@@RobertDIY thanks Ronbert!
how’s you get the fuel filter out? there’s not enough space for me to get wrenches in there. maybe i jacked the rear end too high???
bring it by and I'll see what's going on.
Hey do you have a picture of the tool you made to remove the fuel lines under the tank (1998 Jaguar xj8) thanks Vince.
Yes, in the video. Did you watch the video?
ua-cam.com/video/gt9w-ZSxs9I/v-deo.html
Did you check the fuel pump relay, do you know where it is..on my Jaguar xj 2004??
Did you watch part 1?
I need to know how to get fuel line off. No link in comments. Is there a trick to getting them off or is special tools required?
did you watch pt 1 of 2?
How long did it take from start to finish?
Gurpreet Hira information in the comments.
What year is this XJ8? Does the tank need to be dropped on a MY2004?
If it looks like mine you should watch the videos and decide.
@@RobertDIY so.... You do not know what year that one is?
Odd response for someone that posts videos specifically to help others.
Best of luck to you. At least I know now now to bother watching any more of your videos.
DID THE EVER START UP AND WAS THAT THE PROBLEM??????????? DOING ONE TODAY 96 XJ6 REALLY GREAT VIDEO.
I don't understand your question but after replacing the fuel pump and other parts all is well.
@@RobertDIY SORRY ABOUT THAT DID THE CAR EVER START UP AND RUN AFTER YOU CHANGE THE FUEL PUMP
Did you watch the video or read my last reply?
Love to see video on it
@@RobertDIY nope
Hi, my jaguar type 2005, keep shut down , the pump, but is not full of gas,I had the injector circuit change::but it start doing the same thing,,,please help ,Me
is the fuel pump bad?
ua-cam.com/video/NWfLpp8NevI/v-deo.html
Why not save your self the labor of removing the tank and pull the rear seat cushion to access the pumps ?
Have you done it that way?
My tank is not in the trunk, where is it. 2004 XJ8
under the car?
Can't find it
May not have one.
