Just because you don't see any on the road doesn't mean it aged well, Unreliable British trash just like always...
The customer should read his repair bill which should list all parts replaced and all work performed. Then, the customer should ask the shop what all of that means if the customer doesn't understand what was written on the repair bill. Car Wizard could have asked for the prior repair bill and then would have 100% known what was done.
My 03 Jag is an XKR. I just had my front strut mounts changed. Fairly standard stuff. Wonderfull, beautiful cars.
Years ago I had an issue with a 5.0 Mustang. After a garage changed the EGR and half the sensors, I figured out it was the transmission range sensor.
This video is spot on! Omega did some extensive work on our 1998 Jaguar XK8 and that video is found on his channel from last December. They communicated with us on everything! The work was done by who we considered experts on Jaguars. We are fortunate to live just over an hour away from Omega and couldn't be more grateful. Well done Omega and so happy you are doing your part to keep these cars on the road and being seen! Our Jag has won multiple awards now at shows in two states, and when folks hear the Car Wizard worked on it, they are like, WOW, you got the best!
Mrs wizard - that jag gearbox is a “J gate” box. You can manually shift through 2nd, 3rd and 4th when in the twisties. I miss my old XK8! Lovely cars
The J gate doesn't actually let you shift through the gears, it just limits the gear i chooses to no higher than what you've selected. You need the later Jags with the paddle shifts for manual control.
I knew a good mechanic who used sledge hammers. He was an alignment specialist who straightened bent frames!
People have to start refusing to pay for repairs that aren't repairs. Take them to court and get your money back. Or attempt to reverse the charges through the credit card company. In my state, small claims are matter of public record; enough of these, and questionable repair shops will go out of business.
Not sure that taking workshops to court is the answer - as real winners from a court hearing are the lawyers - and the likelihood of getting your money back is somewhat remote.

Absolutely, unfortunately the first step is people knowing what is a reasonable repair. I know someone who took her truck in for a simple repair and had her transmission replaced without her consent after it was "diagnosed" as the problem. It took months for her to even get her truck back. Obviously the jack a** thought a little old lady didn't know what was what, and he was wrong. You can imagine how many people would have just paid and moved on because it sounded legitimate.
Easier said tha done. Many courts require an “expert” witness and most mechanics are too busy to go to Court for the slight chance you may recieve a judgement. Even if the mechanic does go the judge may ask how long each mechanic has been in business and side with the other mechanic because that mechanic claims to have been in bussiness longer.
We are talking about jaguars. Even the dealer can’t fix them and make them stay fixed.
This is such a nice car! Even if the foam that they use on top of the springs do degrade over time, they are relatively easy to replace and gives a suspension that is like nothing else. If you can buy a Jag, you can afford to have the foam replace every decade.

The old saying that "if you couldn't afford it when it was new then you can't afford it now" is very very apt imo.

I daily drive an 08 XK through thick and thin and it probably on average needs 1000- 1500 a year in maintenance. and it’s only that high because I had to redo suspension bushings which wasn’t that bad. no engine or transmission issues other than a vacuum leak from a shop righting my air intake while it was bent during regular service checkup

Probably could have cleaned the MAF sensor and re-tested before just replacing it though - a bucks worth of MAF cleaner vs maybe a hundred or more for a new sensor... just something I would have tried first anyway.

@@cbruno12180Problem is they are often extremely pricey- just looked up my GS460 for example, nearly $300 for an OEM one from Lexus - or you can take your chances with a knock off for a lot less - found one for $40 but no way am I putting that in my car. You clean it, you plug in your diagnostic and check everything is within range, if it's not - then you can replace it and you've only lost 15 minutes.
Guess it's different for me as I do most of my own work - I normally give mine a spray when I clean & oil my air filter as I run a K&N oiled filter, and they can degrade the performance of the MAF if you don't clean it from time to time.

A shortage of actual mechanics and intelligent/informed owners sums up these types of issues. Jags are quite well done, ...not perfect, but quite good.
Few cars look a lot newer than they actually are, this is one of them.
Have a 05 super v8. Got the restricted performance. Had to replace both fuel pumps and a rear electronics module in the trunk finally fixed it. I got bad gas. tank was full of black brown goo. Nice to have my car back. Easy access to fuel pumps. Not too bad of a repair Dealer price for one pump was $1,600. Got two from hard rock car parts. $200 for both. Used rear module from Lithuania for $40 with postage. That car looks to be in good shape
The "foam" in the struts is used for ride comfort and acoustic behaviour. The "foam" has better acoustic insulation then the usual rubber pads and also keeps away the very very little bumps coming from the suspension (it reduces harshness).
That stuff is really tough, it's used as bump stop in a lot of cars but for this application it really is meh because a lot of dirt and grime gets caught between it and the spring and that destroys it rather quickly (ok took some 20 years in this case)
it just doesn't last, which is a problem since its so hard to replace

Why not have a rubber outer shell on the foam, to make it less exposed to salt, grit and water from the roads, it would still soften the feeling!?

@@Bratfalken Nah doesnt work. The rubber would need to be very thin and wouldnt last very long. If you make it thick enough you can go full rubber anyway. Also I dont think you can put the rubber around the foam because the heat required would destroy it.
Great looking car. I had the xkr coupe. I would recommend having one as a weekend run around. They are not expensive to buy, but they are expensive to maintain. Great video update.
when you own a jag, you car goes lean on both banks. then you go lean on both banks also.
I'm on my 4th Jag and none of them has been expensive to maintain, keep on top of routine maintenance and they're as reliable as anything else on the road. But I'm in the UK where maybe the mechanics don't take you for a ride - they let the cars do that! The main expense is fuel and tyres!
Diagnosis, as your shop does, is always the smart move. 🖖😎
That's kind of fishy a customer wouldn't have a receipt for a $2000 repair to show what was done. You would normally save that receipt, throw it in the glove box at the least. Hmm? 👍😎✌🗽

@@wmpx34 Very rare, but yes, there is that possibility. I always throw them in the glovebox which is never used so fairly safe it'll be there when, if I need it.
I think the wizard is being diplomatic, if he doesn’t ask or isn’t given the receipt its better as his channel isn’t about naming and shaming to the “n”th degree what others do or don’t do, im pretty sure whoever worked on that motor will get to hear about their mis-diagnosis one way or the other.

Thanks for another video! I have a Jaguar XF , love it! But they can be hard to work with! I've had the dreaded restricted performance warning on my car, and it was the inlet manifold on the 3.0D, had that changed out!

That is very common today that people just buy and replace all kind of parts without diagnostics.
I love seeing the jags in your shop. I did my best when I had my own shop to set the expectations with the clients. As for that XK8, that is the best driveline they ever had. 4.2 V8 and 6HP!

It’s amazing that a Jag got over 60,000 miles let alone almost 100k. Look at the ones for sale and you don’t see over 50k miles much. They look so damn good. I loved most Jag’s looks since I saw an XKE back in ‘60 at 9.

these cars, especially the facelift 4.2 ones, are really not that bad, but most techs play dumb when a jag rolls through their service bay.

Hey Wizard, I'm one of your fans from Canada! After watching most of your videos, I can say I think we're kindred spirits, similar with experience and outlook. Most the shops I have worked in were run and operated very much like yours and that's what I've always looked for in a place to work. I'm a licenced Tech myself for almost 2 decades.
My reason to comment today was I just wanted to say, I almost always clean my MAF sensors when dirty and not just replace, and I've been very successful in doing so. One old Buick 3.8 did break once when I was using a q-tip to clean it, but that's out of hundreds I've cleaned. They say that's one reason not to clean it physically, but if your're careful with the delicate wires you absolutely can get away with it! Use an actual MAF sensor cleaner or throttle body cleaner for best results and no residue, and spray the wires as well as soak a q-tip and gently rub off any dirt/oil. Also blow it out after they are sprayed with compressed air to finish the clean. Just thought your viewers would like this money saving tip (as a clean MAF will almost always get noticeably better MPG). Only other thing to note for those DIY types is you will usually need an anti-tamper torx bit to remove them, and I on my own vehicles clean it every air filter change or two to keep it clean also.
Having a guy that’s knows electronics is worth his weight in gold.

I have a new issue I just troubleshot with my XJR. A leaking electrical connector on the AC compressor was causing a P0174(lean) and restricted performance! Definitely a head scratcher!!
The exhaust going over the rear subframe was well on its way out as well.
I watch this channel because I love the Wizards honesty. You don't find that in anybody anymore, especially mechanics nowadays. I wish the wizard lived right down the street I'll bring all my cars to him😅

What a pair ! Like father like son ! ;-) Jags are the best ! Late 90', in my youth, fresh out mechanical school, I greatly wanted to work at Mercedes or BMW, but I 'only' got a job at Jaguar... Didn't expect that ! I drove Merks and BM's... Nothing beat a Jag. Try them ! You'll get it ! BTW, I'm not a rep, I just love the brand, I work in IT now.
The "parts cannon", that's a good one I've not heard before. Sums up a lot of shops perfectly.
I often fire the parts cannon, but in a slightly different way…
One leaking shock? All 4 get replaced.
One tie-rod end loose? Both get replaced along with the lower ball joints.
Plastic roller breaks in one of the window regulators? I service and lubricate all of them, replace the same roller in all 4 and repack the gearboxes with new grease.
It’s a bit different because it’s my car, but you get a lot more life out of a vehicle being proactive with maintenance, rather than reactive.

As soon as I watched this video I went straight to my 2007 Audi a3 and checked the dipstick and oil cap to see if those seals could be causing my lean code. What would ya know but my oil cap gasket is gone! Thank you wizard!
Glad to hear you got it! Those engines are also notorious for failed CCV diaphragms as well as rear main seal failure causing lean conditions!
Sadly, most shops hire people out of school, then do not bother to train them. Some shops send their mechanics to seminars, but the incentive is to party, rather than learn, for many. Seminars really is not training, if there is no requirement to perform tasks to confirm the learning experience. Very few mechanics can Diagnose issues, and that is why many unnecessary parts get replaced, BEFORE the problem is solved. Often shops pay on a flat-rate basis, so the incentive for mechanics to do a good job is missing. It is a sad state of affairs that plagues the industry, and gives good mechanics a bad reputation, by association.

Wizard, I like your mechanic, he has a good sense of humour and is knowledgeable.
Our friends took their car to a local shop three times, and it still wasn’t fixed right. This is pretty typical nowadays. Most shops, just throw parts at a car instead of actually diagnosing for the problem.
Glad you put diagnosis in front of the parts cannon. Modern cars need a lot of diagnosis. So, it can be a hard balancing act between time cost and parts cost.

Mrs. Wizard seemed confused as to why you'd need a digital/analog clock. This has been an issue in aviation for a long time. A digital display gives you raw information as to what time it is. But knowing the time is one thing - figuring out what the time is *relative* to another time is something else. Your digital clock may read 10:45, and that's good to know. But in your head, you have to then convert it to useful information. On the other hand, an analog display tells you very quickly that it's a quarter to eleven. With an analog display, you don't really have to know the exact time because you can easily see that, for instance, if you need to be somewhere at 11:00, you only have a short time left. In some cases, an analog display is simply better or more intuitive. Let's say that you have a digital readout of oil temperature. If the gauge reads 100 degrees and the limit is 105, you might not notice that it's close to the redline. An analog display makes it very clear that the oil temp is about to hit the redline. In my car I have both a digital display of time in my radio, but an analog clock high up on the dash. Guess which one I use more?
That digital clock was the face of the satnav!

Can confirm seats are very comfortable and supportive. I spent 13 hours in my 2000 XK8 convertible from New Hampshire to North Carolina and not a cramp, sore muscle or numbness. I understand many people have issues with Jaguar reliability and repair costs but mine has been rock solid. They're comfortable, reasonably quick, good looking from almost every angle (yes, the E-Type is better), the early ones ooze class (before the interior "freshening") and they are dirt cheap. What more could you ask for?
Most people who claim Jags are unrelaible and expensive have probably never driven one, let alone owned one. People have long memories and are thinking back to the bad old British Leyland days when things really were bad. Times have very much changed for the better now.
I feel like that's missing an under tray. Plastic or not, those do matter (like fan shrouds) for proper cooling and protection.
Grimes has been a real great hire for you. I think he can fix any car problem. Hope you pay him well.
Great job again.. I've been a licensed technician for almost 50 years.. it absolutely pisses me off when techs don't logically think through especially on one, this easy... when you have a lean on one or both sides, you must think it through. What causes leans, always look at data and especially mode 6.. short and long term ratio readings,etc..the old saying 80% diag,,20% replace.. especially nowadays...
Unfortunately techs have egos bigger than the car, and they don't know when to admit.. so they will keep replacing parts, and now the customer hates mechanics... absolutely pathetic...
These older Jaguar's are great vehicles, but it costs a lot of time and money to keep these vehicles on the road.
If only every garage was as honest and thorough as Wizard's gang at Omega.
That "digital clock panel" is the (I think optional) satnav! The default was three round dials for clock, voltage and engine temp (I think, been a long time since I sold mine!). I had a 4.0 2001 XK8 coupe with 60,000 miles on it and it was a great car - the only things I had to replace on it were the high-level brake light (LEDs failed) and the coolant expansion tank. I swapped it for a 4.2 2004 XKR which was also great, and then moved up to a 5.0 2010 XKR - great improvement with low miles. I'm now in a V8 F-Tye R AWD and it's easily the best car on the road, regardless of Mr Predictor's opinion! 🙂
I used to think that I would never own a foreign car because of little problems like this, but now it seems like American cars have lost quality and parts are hard to find. I’m actually starting to lean towards foreign cars now because they are the lesser problem of the 2. And although more expensive the parts seem to be more readily available. Unless I can find something American made from the 60’s or 70’s.

Really? We UK Jag owners use growler to mean the growler emblem. What else could it mean?
I knew someone that had this car brand new in ‘03. It almost immediately developed a battery drain condition that was never resolved, even after having Jaguar send some expert to try to fix it. He wound up getting rid of it… not sure if he was refunded- it was probably still under warranty…

For such cars, it seems like there should be a dash indicator lamp that flashes "Money Pit--Money Pit--Money Pit".
Had one for ten years replaced the Ford gas pump, and bought tires and silicon wipers oil was Moblie 1. That's it. My wife hated that I sold it.
I didn't realise the dipstick seal was that important.
I have the same engine, it drives great but I'll definitely going to clean my MAF sensor

Hi Wizard. That 6 speed ZF gearbox is overdue a fluid change. I believe Jag sold them as 'sealed for life', but the pan, pan fixings, control sleeve should be replaced every 80-90k miles. You must use the correct ZF fluid too.
Fluid replacement was recommended and declined. I’m a stickler for maintenance intervals. 😂
@@GrimesGarage oh dear. When the gearbox goes this gorgeous car will probably be scrapped.
I think ZF recommend around 60,000 miles for the fluid change. I had mine done and it made a noticeable difference (remember "the lurch"?).
My 2001 xk8 with ZF-5HP is at 81k. Received a trans filter kit this week $45 all in + ZF brand fluid at $23/liter, so that 'lifetime fluid', well ...81k is its' lifetime. Just yesterday did the h2o pump and associated parts, $56 pump, steel gasket oem, $28, serp belt, idler pulley@$40, a few more items... With patience and tools this gen XK is somewhat DIY friendly.
You made me laugh when you were messing with those hammers. My dad owned an electric motor sales and repair business. I loved to spend time with him at the shop. He referred to a hammer as a technical alignment tool. He'd holler at me, hey kid hand me the technical alignment tool.
The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to plug up the drain. Modern cars are far too complex. That's the biggest problem.
I always like to have the shop return my used parts when possible. That way I know that it was replaced, and I can inspect the used part, sometimes having a backup if I need to.
A jag is tool for cleaning a gun barrel.
The growler holds on the steering wheel in a Tesla which can be abbreviated to Turd.
Ford can be cut down to FO which is coincidentally the same for Tata Jaguar.
Oh No.. This reason alone is why I started my Car Channel here on UA-cam. "DIY" Do It Yourself if you can or take it to The Wizard. I have had 5 Jags and currently a 98 Jaguar XJR and what the Wizard pointed out is exactly what I would have checked. I hope in some way, the owner got paid back but I am sure he did not. MOST and i would say 75% of mechanics are not to be trusted and this come with experiences and again, the reason I started a car channel to show folks you SOMETIMES can do the work yourself. I have actually thought of shipping some of my cars to The Wizard, time will tell. Get job again Wizard.

Timing Chain Problems on Jagnas . Pull engine a #50 Gm motor will fit just fine and run well
I only shoot the parts cannon if the ammunition is cheap.

I went into my local garage heard some squeaks thought have a look at the brakes, , came back stating you need calipers , gave me blah blah lucky I've been around cars for most of life, I said I will see so I knew there was nothing wrong with my brakes you know if your calipers are shot had another garage look at it just to make sure yup nothing wrong with the brakes, just needed some cleaning , if you have any doubt get another opinion , sadly there is sharks out there , Wizard your one of the honest ones,

This customer must have lied to you, $3000 spent on the Jag and they didn't give him a bill on what they spent the money on? That sounds suspicious alone. Since you said that you didn't see any changes done in the car, it must be the customer, lying to you to get your sympathy/attention. You fixed his beast for way less, that's what matters. A friend of mine bought a used Jag for $8k. He said I'll put $5k into it and have a nice car. Long story short it was a money pit. Anyone buying a Jag should expect to walk away once it becomes a money pit.
Having ran two Jaguar XJ's from experience you need a hard to find repair shop that realy
do know how to find the faults without just running up an expensive bill.
You only need to do some research to find out exactly what is causing your issues
this can be confirmed with some diagnostics and most of all a good mechanic
that is not not just a spare parts fitter..
Re the suspension mounts, these and a lot of the other bushings are a known weak spot,
replacing the bushings is not a five minute job, be prepared for a large bill.
When running as they should these cars are superb and put other cars to shame with
their high quality interiors, just keep an eye on the headlining, another weak spot!
The back seats are put in by the manufacturer to make insurance cheaper
I thought it was to avoid the additional 2-seater car tax in the US. And they're great for transporting drunks who are, of course, "legless"! I've carried three people in my 2001 XK8 with the front passenger seat pushed forward - you need people with short legs, of course. But they're great as storage space - I miss them in my F-Type.

There is no bigger compliment to a shop than a car that comes in wrong and goes out right when others have failed to fix it, for whatever reason. To car owners I can only suggest that people do more investigation of a shops reputation before letting them loose on your car. I love that Jaguar. At 20 years old it's looking great. Here in the UK corrosion from road salt would have inevitably damaged the underside.
Not inevitably - a lot of them are garage queens (mine weren't!).
Had an ‘03 XJ8 that plagued me with electrical issues. If you like playing a very expensive game of whack-a-mole, purchase that beautiful Jag you’ve been eyeing. You won’t be disappointed.
I ended up selling mine at a loss. I owned it from 2020 to 2021. Where I live, they require a smog check. The side of the road dealer I bought it from assured me it was flawless. It had to pass smog for them to sell to me. Shortly after purchase, check engine came on. It never went away regardless of what code I chased down and tried to remedy. Would not pass smog with the check engine. 🤬🤬🤬
When it ran, it was the BEST ride I ever had. So sad and disheartening to have to part with it.
You need to find a decent mechanic you can trust and who knows their stuff. They are, sadly, thin on the ground. Then the Jag is no more expensive to run (apart from fuel and tyres!) than an "ordinary" car.
I wish my 03 Jaguar XKR looked as good as that one underneath. I'm in the UK and I'm afraid our weather is not kind to the chassis of these cars. They are great cars to drive though.
