Hi Mat I would genuinely rather have this in my garage than your AMG GT . I really hope that you change your mind about this old Jaguar. It does deserve to be saved, but more importantly it deserves to love in your garage at home .I absolutely adore the 308 its the last of the try jags ,it's a decent car under all that dirt and I would be extremely disappointed if you moved it on for a measly profit of 1500 quid. Old Jaguars turn heads and it says a lot more about the man that drives it than an AMG ever could. Be proud of your roots ,you know you want to keep it ,and when asked what car do you drive. In your best Jeremy Clarkson. I drive a Jaaaaag 😁🇬🇧❤️
@Highpeakautos I once had an 09 X-Type Jag, 3.0 litre V6 it had the body kit on it, spoiler, boot lip and side skirts, it looked the business. I wish, really, I'd kept it and spent a little on it to keep it looking good, but I found that there was always some little thing that needed a pound or two and for a daily runner, it wasn't viable. GREAT story and the best description for that XJ "Regal"
Definitely not lost your mind. This is a classic that will start to appreciate in value soon I feel. It's arguably one of the most handsome Jag shapes but is modern enough to daily drive. I think it looks best without the chrome trim in XJR spec but traditionalists will like the chrome. That's a classy special interior. Nothing modern this side of a Bentley has that feel.
As a lifelong Jaguar fanatic I would never buy a cheap neglected example. They are all money pits. Always buy the very best examples and even then expect large bills. Parts on the X308 are becoming harder to source. Jaguar Heritage only seem to keep an inventory of quick turnover parts.

There's a spray I found in the US that deals with flakey clear-coat. It's a liquid that seals the lacquer and then drys flat like new. Cheered my old Chevy's paint up a treat in Antigua.
You saved it Mat!, I wondered if you’d been successful. Can’t wait to see the old girl painted. I remember it when it was new. The engine has had a really easy life and any corrosion is from the years standing 👍👍👍
I always enjoy your videos, Matt. Recently you've shown a lot of old bangers, but you haven't included Carol Vorderman, but I reckon she's been buffed up many times.
Nobody round my way gets a spray gun out for less than about £650 a panel. Unfortunately, that'd make it another £1500 or so in the body shop so it's knocking on the door of 6k all in, which is, sadly, a bit more than anyone is likely to pay for a 3.2 xj. Handsome things though. Glad to see it saved. Good luck!
Some places can fix the headliner by injecting adhesive through it but even that’s not easy. My father has a x308 LWB supercharged 4.0 and they are notorious for not going into the deepest “sleep” mode, and they drain the battery. He has a big solar panel on the rear shelf and it keeps it topped up. It’a too big for my garage but otherwise I love it. It’s in royal blue with ivory seats, identical to the one the late Queen used around Windsor Castle except hers had a handbag hook. The carpets are Wilton thickness. Solid walnut picnic tables. Heated electric rear seats, car phone and Sat Nav in that old thing…. But single zone climate control. Strange omission.
As a kid in the 80's and early 90's we always used to drive past the local Jaguar dealer in Falmouth in my parents yellow mk3 Escort. I always used to wish my dad would one day pull into the Jag dealer and buy an XJ. Never happened. I still want one.
I think you’re on the money with this Matt, you’re final comment about someone to own and treasure, attending shows etc, would be great fun for a jag enthusiast, would make a great buy and genuine to boot! 👍
These were actually pretty good for reliability back in the day. They came quite close to the top in those customer satisfaction survey things. I've always liked the Ford era Jags. They seem to be the best ones to have.
@@matthewgodwin3050what are you huffing mate? Ford era jags are the worst ones by miles. For reliability it is the new ones that beats the rest, I know the modern looks aren't for the older gents tastes but are very stylish designed by Ian atleast. Loved my XF mark2 so far.
@johnatherton71 But the difference is that German cars sell in huge numbers and the companies that produce them are independent and profitable! Those German sheds as you call them actually have a much higher owner retention than anything JLR makes so apparently they must be satisfying their owners well enough for them to buy another one. Six of the top ten selling vehicles in the UK are German marques or designs.
@@williamegler8771 They used to be until the accoutants took over. Now the reliabilty is average at best with far too many plastic parts waiting to fail. No luxury cars are cheap to own, you just have to pick the right model and keep your fingers crossed.
You are such a breath of fresh air. Almost everyone on UA-cam is picking up cars at copart or marketplace and discovering the simple, cheap fix. It's very refreshing to see the truth behind these bargains. Hopefully you have saved some well meaning enthusiasts from disappointment.
I had to rewatch this - the mandatory trip to Tameside Valeting is nowhere to be seen! Seriously, I would love to see this car when all the cosmetic stuff has been done. Congratulation Matt - you are preserving our national heritage!
Something special about old Jags, my brother once came home with a Daimler Sovereign 4.2. He was only 20 at the time, we had a laugh driving round in it, a lovely car that sadly hadn't been looked after but will never forget the ride....like a magic carpet.
A magnificent looking car 😍 even when it's dirty and needs paint. Would look splendid outside a stately home and even better on your driveway ❤ Can you see yourself keeping it, Matt? Definitely worth the spend.
Worth 500 just for the experience regardless. Thing is your saving a future classic, it costs you money but to a enthusiast that can do the work themselves then it's a different thing. Good work, glad it's getting the love it deserves, keep it.
Just got my 2005 XK8 headlining replaced by StudioCarsofPreston: £400 cash for Jaguar Enthusiast Club members. Rust is ALWAYS a problem. Mercs & Beemers they're not. I love Jags. Really good to see another one saved from the scrapyard. Good work, Matt 😊
My Dad has a XJ8 in pristine condition.... and even he tells me you need the pennies to own one.... tyres alone are more than what you paid... let alone the exhaust - mind you a nice V8 engine is tempting.... great presentation again!
Crazy! When being around certain cars, it is easy to overpowered by a kind of insanity. If the pricetag will be around 5.000 it'll roll out of the shop pretty quick. For small money someone would get a "majestic" car to show off at car shows, as you mention. Promise to make a update video when it's finished.
A beautiful car. Keep the coach line, it's part of the car. It deserves to be shown at all Classic Car shows. People will love it and drool over it. If you can't keep it, find someone who will !
I have a lot of respect for you for putting effort into these kinds of projects. It is clearly all about passion for cars. The profit margin is thin on this kind of stuff, but you are doing something great for the car community. Thanks and good luck.
I owned a 1997 XJ 3.2 Executive (X300 - 6cyl) for 13 years. Best car I've ever owned, cheapest to maintain, regular maintenance, no problems except the coils (Lucas, enough said) and the timing chain tensioner. My subsequent cars have cost me a fortune.
That is a thing of beauty. I hate leaving cars sitting. I almost killed my old Fabia by doing that and putting it off like you do. I always tell people it's the worse thing you can do. Please update us and do a drive is this so we can hear that glorious big cat purrr. The same key as my accient Fiesta is true cost cutting.
You are a hero for saving the car, and even if you don't make any money, you've spent more on cars that should never have been saved. I drove the 4.2 L XJ6 many years ago, and it made me feel like royalty. If I had the space, and my wife wasn't in charge of the purse strings, I would have this off you in a heartbeat.
A friend of mine has two of these and I've told him he has to leave one of them to me in his will ... I love them! I have an 1993 XJ40 which has done 360000km and I think it's the next best thing to the XJ8.

What's it called?
@@sandwichbar8226 Buggered if I can remember. Also used it on the Alfa.
Just in the process of pondering a similarly dormant x308, if you see the vid you'll recognise similar moss/mould growth along the side and front!
Good luck!
Where do you live?! I got had to get 2 wings painted for one of my old Volvos, went to a few different places and all pretty much wanted £150 a wing.
£650 a panel 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looks mint 👌
Polo Mint?
@@timbutton4990 yes
As a kid in the 80's and early 90's we always used to drive past the local Jaguar dealer in Falmouth in my parents yellow mk3 Escort. I always used to wish my dad would one day pull into the Jag dealer and buy an XJ. Never happened. I still want one.
Your missus/future missuses will defo be expecting great things given your track record of overspending 😂
Wait he’s not fruity?
@@johnatherton71 Disappointed ?
@@eoinoconnell185 not particularly, just an observation
I think you’re on the money with this Matt, you’re final comment about someone to own and treasure, attending shows etc, would be great fun for a jag enthusiast, would make a great buy and genuine to boot! 👍
3:14 matt forgot that now we get 20% off
I think its worth every penny, it a beautiful car and needs saving, and your the man to do it!
Jagggggg!
Love it, I know it's a business, but you must get some joy knowing you've kept another car out the scrapyard!
Jaguar: “A nice place to sit waiting for a tow-truck!”
@@MK-ly3gk I'm with you on the styling. But in regards to quality and reliability, I still think the Ford era cars were better.
Would not want to upset you. But it is what you LOVE and the viewers. No doubt many more to come. Cheers Matt. !
£500… surely this has to be a lemon
Jaguars can be if you buy a money pit.
I know from experience !
Whether it is £500 or £50,000 it is a Jaguar so of course it is a lemon.
@@williamegler8771almost as much as those German sheds
A £5k Classic Car for the price of an electric bike. Bargain.
You’ve gone mad but I applaud your effort. Look forward to seeing it finished …. one day!
A magnificent looking car 😍 even when it's dirty and needs paint. Would look splendid outside a stately home and even better on your driveway ❤ Can you see yourself keeping it, Matt? Definitely worth the spend.
That’s just like my old car and the interior colour combo is antelope over sable with chrome upper enviroment pure jag class
Worth 500 just for the experience regardless. Thing is your saving a future classic, it costs you money but to a enthusiast that can do the work themselves then it's a different thing. Good work, glad it's getting the love it deserves, keep it.
One of the classiest cars you've bought Matt.
Another video when finished, it deserves a road trip me thinks
It does!
I do hope you change your mind re the coach line - it's original and it makes the look complete.
Nah they look crap.
That jaguar branded Motorola phone is worth a few quid on its own. I kept mine from my old S-Type when it was scrapped
As a classic car fan I would say keep the pin stripe. What it has cost you so far is money well spent in order to look it's best.🙂
Top one is painted on, so I would just leave it
I owned a 1997 XJ 3.2 Executive (X300 - 6cyl) for 13 years.
