As a fairly new woodturner, I have watched MANY turning videos on youtube. This is certainly one of the best I have seen. Thanks for making it available!

Doug was my highschool woodshop teacher in 1996/1997, and I credit/blame him for getting me into wood turning, which I maintain as a hobby to this day. Good to see he hasn't changed a bit!

Doug, you mentioned about sometimes the colors don’t turn out like you wanted. Have you ever considered going over the color with another to change the color? It would certainly make things easier to save the design work. Also have you ever considered covering the wood with sanding sealer ? Been painting drift wood for a couple of years and wood species coming out of the Chesapeake Bay after being under water for years. The woods can be from trees to broken furniture due to several floods caused by hurricanes. I love your work and homage to Native American designs. Lots of love and talent! Thank you!! Just happened to run into your work via falling asleep during a wood turning video from England.

First of all, thanks to all of you for watching my video, and being interested in what I do. For all of you wondering about the pens I use on the basket illusion pieces, I started with Copic brush markers, and have also used Prismacolor and Windsor-Newton, which are all alcohol based ink. Lately, I have been using Faber Castell India ink pens, and have had good luck with them. I get the pens at Hobby Lobby and Jerry's Artarama. I will be demonstrating my techniques at 2018 Utah Woodturning Symposium in May, and will be showing and selling next August at Sculpture in the Park show in Loveland, Colorado, and at Art for the Sangres, in Westcliffe, CO in September.

Good video, you mentioned a friend able to put different words in illusion bowl beads and you could not. You can just put your message in first then color your beads. Woogee

What do you use for a finish on the colored bowls? Lacquer? Tung oil?

  • @meadmaker4525

Great demo!! Perhaps I missed it, but is there a finish applied to these basket bowls after the coloring? If so, what is used? Can't be alcohol-based or the ink would run. Or maybe a sanding sealer of some type before the coloring? Just curious. Thanks for posting this!

Great video, but I was rather concerned with your unbuttoned cuffs. I was taught to have no loose clothing near rotating machinery. I know that with your experience you can get away with it. But a newcomer to the art might get a wrong impression.

@@lokalnyork funny you should mention "degloving". i am a nurse, and Ive seen it all in 30 years of ER, but I saw my first degloving injury recently and it was the most horrifying thing Ive ever seen. Anyone who doubts this should indeed look up "degloving injuries" images.

Clubs will sometimes take logs, but they need to be close to a Wood Bank where they would be stored for individual turners to access. Where are you located? How quickly must the logs be picked up?
