Small thing mr top hat... it was a 1mb ROM not RAM - for king of the fighters... the difference is that certain game assets are on the ROM cart wheras the RAM for xmen vs street fighter is just pure memory space thus can be used on other titles wheras the ROM cart is exclusive to that game it came with. Great vid tho.

Xmen vs Street Fighter was not just good because of the cross over but also because of how great it looked with huge sprites and special effects.
If Capcom would have ported SFA2 characters directly without upgrades then the Xmen charachters would have totally killed the SF charachters so I guess it was part of their balancing.
That aside one of the comments my friend said when I asked if he had played the game in Sega world was that it's amazing and he talked about how the SF characters had upgrades to their moves and looked great.
I couldn't wait to play it and when I did it did not disappoint it was better than I had hoped based on the hype and what I had seen in magazines and as a Saturn fan I was very smug having a near Arcade perfect port :P

For the people asking "why the outrage/what outrage" or that they've "never heard anyone hating this game," the hate/outrage is apparently from those that played the arcade version, and they're unhappy with the PS port of this game, There is NO HATE for the original arcade version (or the Sega Saturn port for that matter). But the OP however, points out that he himself doesn't think that the PS port was all that bad either.

Awesome video. As a hardcore Sega Saturn fan, it was my favorite system of the 90s due to imports, I have to chime in. I’ve played the arcade version religiously as I was fortunate to have a few arcade units near me. Immediately upon playing this game in late 1996 in NYC, I knew with absolute certainty that an accurate port on the PlayStation was a technical impossibility.
Two minor corrections: you called Sabretooth, Sabrewulf. Also, I vividly remember buying the King of Fighters 95 port in early 1996. It was the first Sega Saturn game ever to promise a near arcade perfect port, due to the use of the Sega Saturn cartridge slot. However, this was a 1MB ROM cart, not the familiar 1MB RAM cart. This cart was only used for King of Fighters 95 to store sprites, frames, etc. We did get a 1MB RAM cart that allowed for near arcade perfect 2D ports on the Sega Saturn (Japan only), that could be used with multiple games like Metal Slug, Marvel Superheroes, etc. However, it wasn’t until the release of the 4MB RAM cart with this game that we got arcade perfect ports on the Sega Saturn. Trust me, I used to have this game and X-Men vs Street Fighter in my own personal arcade cabinet (CPS 2 versions) and the Sega Saturn versions running in native RGB on a Sony PVM 2030, and they were absolutely pixel perfect to my eyes. There’s no wonder that the amazing Capcom swan song to the Sega Saturn, Street Fighter Zero 3, is the most coveted port available. That 4MB cart was a true revelation.
Awesome videos. They give this 38 year old gamer nostalgia. 👍

Back in the day, I bought the Saturn XM vs SF that included that ram cart. It was $100 well spent. My friends and I spent months playing the vs mode. Same with the MSH vs SF the next year. But yeah, I rented the PSX version one time just to see the difference. Yikes. No tag team really crippled it & the load times were miserable. The Saturn ram cart eliminated load times.

The saddest part of this review was just how Sega left all their best games in Japan. If they would've brought their 2D games, and especially the RAM cart memory expansion to the West, I wouldn't have ended up buying a Neo Geo CD in 1998. In hindsight I guess I should've just bought a Japanese Saturn. But still, this stuff should've been on our shelves. The blunders that Sega of Japan and America made at that time... it's like they wanted to fail.

This was an awesome and accurate historical lead up and review of this game. Lots of great memories playing this game on the Saturn. I have a few things I want to mention about the game.
    1) For the Saturn import you did not reference the converter cartridge. I believe it was called an ST Key. This was an endeavor as a successful conversion occurred about 50% of the time. That swap from the key to the ram cartridge was hit or miss. Also, we played the game some much that we ended up wearing out one of them. Same thing with the 4 MB ram cartridge.
    2) The loading screen on the PlayStation version would take up to 20 seconds to load from what I remembered. There were also a few times that the loading time crossed the 30 second mark. Those game reviews for the PlayStation port were spot on - that version was terrible.
    3) I completely forgot that the tag team element was removed from the PlayStation version. Guess I just blocked it out of my memory bank. It was that bad.

I had to boot the game up with the converter in the cartridge slot, pop the converter out at the right moment and then insert the RAM cart. Timing was everything. It was a great game that really showcased the Saturn's capabilities despite needing the RAM cart to do so.

This video just earned you a like and subscribe from me, but the main question I have to ask from you in terms of fighting games, are you going to be covering the marvel vs series as a whole?
Or will you do it as individual games since this one seems like it was about x men vs street fighter, and the other one that I watched that was more or less about street fighter 3 vanilla?
Would also love to see the capcom vs snk series. Keep the great videos coming!

Okay. . Back in N.Y, I was in junior high at the time. My friends and I noticed it right away when we hit up our local arcades. We played it RELIGIOUSLY. To say the least. lol. What's more, regardless to the arcade we would be at. This game specifically had a HUGE amount of ppl waiting to play. In most situations, a long line would be hell, at best, but while awaiting to challenge the winner, watching the matches were more than enough to keep you hyped. ESPECIALLY, in lower Manhattan Chinatown where the challenge was tip top. OMG "WOOOOO!" is literally the best way to describe the experience. Groundbreaking in fighter gaming. Hands down.

Dunno where they hated (or ignored) this game. Here in Mexico it was a huge hit and it was played like crazy in the arcade. The sequel (MvsSF) didn't have the same luck for most of the reasons mentioned in this video.

11:11 i always loved the ridoculous poses the sprite based games made some female fighters do to execute moves. I guess it was just the animators having some to pass the time while hand drawing each sprite. Indeed a work of art kind of lost today!

I loved this game, after playing Children of the Atom, Ryus super Hado just felt natural hitting those 3 buttons all at once, the super jumps were great. I loved this game so much, Black dressed Ryu and Juggernaut was my team.. I saw SFIII in London and was blown away but it wasn't until the Dreamcast released them all that I got to check out all these games.. I did play Alpha 1 in the aracdes though and again, it felt natural and easy to play - they did some great work back then, SFIII is only really being appreciated now or at least in the last few years. No bad thing, it was just super advanced is all.. Saturn and Dreamcast = Capcom & fighters dream..

The reason for the huge kamehameha style attacks by Street Fighters is because this was meant to be more of an extreme version of fighting than it already was, kind of like the way Midway made sports games into outlandish, unrealistic versions of themselves (NFL Blitz or NBA Jam). Also, according to the Ken’s ending of Marvel Super Heroes VS SF, the entirety of the VS games were all a dream.

Sadly, I never found this title at the arcades in my area (plus, I had a full-time job that left me little time to hunt for other arcades in the area). But I did play the PS1 version, and at the time it wasn't bad. Then I was able to find the Japanese Saturn version, and was completely blown away at how well it looked and played.

I have a very interesting story with this game. I played the game in arcades and loved it but I didn't get to go to the arcades much so like many, I had to wait for a console port to really enjoy it. The next year while speaking with a classmate I was told about a guy in our area that essentially sold imports but the way it was explained to me he had to put a chip in my PlayStation.
I basically sold some of my PlayStation games in the hopes that when I went to the store it would be there and my luck it was. I basically had to spend $70 for the chip and the game which I was all for cause I just had to have it! Like most young folks, I was a bit ignorant and my experience with the arcade version was pretty much minimal up to this point so while I felt like something was not quite right, I had absolutely no clue just how bad it was lol.
Like the tag element for instance, I could have sworn it was there lol and I didn't realize just how much animation they removed either lol. On top of all of this, I came to find out later that this chip he put into my PlayStation was playing burned games, and the game that he sold me, which was $30 around that time, was a bootleg lol.
Even knowing this me and my friends did not care because the imports in those days would be available months before things would release in the US and we got to play all sorts of games that never got an official release in the states. I knew the Saturn was a better 2D machine because I had heard about the KOF 95 port but I never imagined the PlayStation was lacking in this department the way it was.

    Another small technicality;
While mentioning the SNK 1MB "RAM" cartridge you displayed an image of the King of Fighters '95 "ROM" cartridge, which actually contains game assets specific to KOF'95, and isn't compatible with any other title.

Remember being in yr 8 entering a tournament held by a group of yr 11 at my high school. I completely domninated the competition and won the tournament even after they kept changing the rules during the finals from no infinities, no throws, to only air throws. So I had to play the finals 3 times agianst 3 different people which were all friends of the organisers....

This was the game I learned how to do hyper combos and air combos. The local arcade in my town was called Diamond Jem's and all the top guys there only played fighting games. I would just play them and get beat pretty bad and ask how to do a move. Sadly they closed it down in 2002. I'm 36 now and would love to see 90s arcades make a comeback. It was always something me and my best friends looked forward to.
