    On The Complete History show this week we are looking at the creation of the Golden Axe franchise, who made it, why it got made and what has happened to it in more recent years.
    It's a series with a lot of ups (including in the arcade with the often over looked revenge of death adder game) and the rather obscure 3rd entry which was only ever released in the states via the sega geneses / mega drive online service... very strange
    Also, we will not be forgetting about the (100% not a rip off from zelda) Golden Axe Warrior game too. And the long lost Golden Axed game too

    Your prayers may have been answered! SEGA just announced five new games from long dormant franchises today, including Golden Axe! We only got about five seconds of gameplay footage, but I'm really intrigued by what we see, and it looks as if the original 3 heroes are back with some slight redesigns. Ax looks more barbariany with some furs and a much bigger sword, Gilius is buff to the point that he looks like a square made of muscle (and I mean that as a compliment, that's how dwarves should look), and Tyris has some kind of double-bladed sword weapon now, which makes her the coolest.

  • @shkeni
    @shkeni 7 років тому +120

    I think it's unfair to call Tyris Flare a "token" female character. When I was a girl and teen I loved playing Golden Axe as Tyris and thought she was the coolest. Her character was given the same care as the other two in the first game and her animations are great.

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 6 років тому +35

      Not to mention she had the most impressive magic spells. Also, Golden Axe is the earliest beat 'em up I can think of which *has* a female character option, so it was hardly a token at the time.

      I like the third. I recently made Chaos Lait on the new Soul Calibur 6 game. Imagine it. After the matters of Golden Axe III, Chaos winds up taking the Golden Axe and forced into a new world by the colliding powers of Soul Edge and the Golden Axe pulling him through the Astral Plains. Another venture that must be seen through after his famed fight with the Lord Hellstrike.
      Also set up a bit of something where a descendant of Chronos, or his tribe, covers his head and face in a hood wrap, takes the Golden Axe and the name of Chaos Lait as he goes forward on his quest.

    • @Bangcat
      @Bangcat 5 років тому

      Think that often tends to happen when you put so much on your original characters, and then try to move onto a new generation. I think that's part of the problem Soul Calibur V had. Thankfully you could take the weapon styles and create some replacements of your own, but also re create older characters no longer there. However there, there were also some slight game mechanic miss steps.
      Soul Calibur 6 is right where it should be and hopefully may be the return of the franchise's greatness. So far it seems to be. It's an extra good thing because many of the upstairs guys at Namco were ready to leave the franchise in the graveyard.

    • @mgm6229
      @mgm6229 5 років тому +3

      Indeed. I don't understand either why Golden Axe 3 get so much flak.
      Although the graphics are worse than the previous two entries, the game mechanics are better and more complex, it has branching paths, combined attacks and magic, more moves, and a great soundtrack. And the story is neither better nor worse than the previous entries. Kind of the same.
      For me, the best GA game ever.

    Little Italy's had Galaga and something else.
    Pizza Hut had the 4 player wheel version of Off Road, and eventually one of the Teken games.

    Great trip down memory lane! Some corrections and extra tidbits of knowledge however...
    Japanese programmers of the day weren’t encouraged to use their real names in the credits. In fact, the Genesis/Mega Drive era was sort of new ground for this. Hence the nicknames.
    The PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16 was an inferior system. In fact, it wasn’t even a true 16 bit system. It used two 8 but CPUs instead of a single 16 bit chip. And it showed with every single multi platform port. TG16 had performance just about in the exact middle between a Master System and Genesis.
    Golden Axe II was indeed sold on the Genesis on the NA region as well.
    Bonus factoid: Alien Storm uses the same game engine (among other things) as Golden Axe. It’s pretty much a reskinned Golden Axe with FPS levels added.

    I first and only ever played Golden Axe at my friend's house, who owned a copy of it for MS-DOS, and I loved it. I was far too young to remember the name of the game. But decades later while listening through a long list of video game music, I heard that familiar theme play again and was instantly taken back to that childhood. Personally I haven't played the game since I was a kid. Because I am afraid of being disappointed, but also because my memories of the game are tied to playing it with my friend. And I would like to keep it that way. However I gladly listen to the music from it, just to get that warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia again.

      No, its because Bondi Studios and Rockstar completely destroyed the Australian video game industry. At the time i was actually hoping to become a developer, but all the Australian studios shut down after the whole LA Noire debacle.. Bondi were treating employees like slaves (wouldn't give a dev time off to see his child being born etc etc etc) and Rockstar pretty much shut them down, which caused the entire industry here to crash... After all Bondi were pretty much the top studio.

    • @Domarius64

      Yeah. Still really sucks, I love what that prototype looks like, and the idea of the others being re-made... and connected?? Actually I know a guy that worked on Castle Of Illusion before they disbanded - they were actually firing people as the game was winding down, and he got let just before the end - and the team accidentally stomped over some of his facial animation of the main baddy in the end cutscene, dulling down what would have been more impressive, Disney style animation.

    A neat trick in the original Golden Axe arcade, is that you can give full health to another player. To pull it off, the player has to have one health bar left.
    During the camp/thief state, the player with the most health has to smack around the one health bar player, but not knock him or her down. Repeat til the last health bar is gone showing zero health.
    Next stage, tadaa! The player with the zero health bars is now at full health. It is a tad hard to pull off due to the limited time you have at the camp stage, but doable and to save you a quarter/token or two at the arcade.

  • @MrJimbofox

    When I wanna play Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder, I simply walk downstairs to my arcade and fire it up. I completely agree with your assessment on someone dropping what they are doing to go and play it should they ever see one. • @adamsimonds6184

    I loved this game as a kid, but now, for the first time after twenty years, I just noticed that Tyris has her right foot almost perpendicular to her hips and in that kind of stance, I'm not sure she isn't going to tear her ACL. Also, not sure how many people know this trick for an almost thirty year old game, but the skeletons during the last fight are actually not invincible, they just have HUGE health pools. The best way I found to kill them (because I played this game so much I challenged myself to do stupid things) was to use the dwarf and catch them with the outside edge of his axe and very attack so that you only did the first two animations (the back and forth swing) and keep them locked into a stunned animation.

    I have to say that as a massive fan of the beat em up genre I was never too gaga for the original Golden Axe. I played it in arcades and on the megadrive and while I did like the arcade version the MD port I thought was just ok. I actually prefer 2 over the first but I think that's mostly because it looks nicer. Of the three MD titles I do really like the 3rd. I know you said it didn't measure up as you felt it lost that GA feel but to me I thought it played better as the gameplay was a bit faster and more fluid. GA 3 is the one I go back to the most. My absolute favourite is definitely Revenge of Deathadder. That was a quality beat em up and I can't believe Sega has still to release a home port of it. You would have thought Sega would at least re release it digitally on psn and xbox live like Capcom did with Dungeons & Dragons. Missed opportunity if you ask me.
