      Yeah. I still love this game, and I'm still not 100% sure what people mean when they say the level designs are bad. Just the color scheme for the individual levels? Is that really all this is about? Is it about the fact that a lot of patterns repeat? I was super surprised you barely mentioned the music but spoke minutes on end about SOR2's music. Seriously this was the best sega game soundtrack at that time. The game's main soundtrack that plays on menu and at start of the game that later evolves to the epic hard hitting version when in the last castle stage was seriously some of the best evolving soundtrack i have heard in any game to date. It really made you feel you are at the climax of an epic journey. You missed quite a few things. Forgot to mention the VS mode where Eve is a playable character. And as well actually a hidden playable character for the campaign. Backgound graphics sure werent the most amazing but you forgot to mention the number of stages all together this game had. If you take into account all those stages it can clearly be seen that the backgrounds had a minimalist approach to fit in so many different stages. Talking about the background and not mentioning the stage where that takes place on the back of a giant eagle. As well these were at the time the best character sprites on the mega drive for the golden axe sega console series. Game play wise this was the best in the sega mega drive golden axe series. After playing this one and going back to the previous titles on the consoles really makes them stand out how clunky the controls and how odd the hitboxes were of 1 and 2.

  • @ryzmaker11
    @ryzmaker11 4 роки тому +106

    This game is actually great on many respects (gameplay; soundtrack; branching paths...) and even visually it still looks interesting in many spots (the crystal cave or the eagle backdrops for instance) but it was held back by a limited cart size (8 meg, absurdly low for a 1993 beat 'em up) and short development time. I love it (and noticed that many people love it as well, you just have to browse some Golden Axe III soundtrack videos to see about that) but it's clearly not the full masterpiece that it could have been.

  • @Duttroid
    @Duttroid 4 роки тому +41

    Golden Axe III is excellent. I'll argue that it's even the best in the series. The control scheme was modified from the first 2 games, thus if one tries to play the game as if it's Golden Axe I or II, it will feel clunky and awkward. That's understandable. Play the game for 20 minutes and get used to the new controls. It's truly an excellent game with a ton of replay value. Also, there's a lot of ambiguity about how to get to the real end of the game. One must reach the first form of the final boss with an A or greater ranking (I believe this is 500 points). There's a surefire way to NOT hold this rank (at least on the normal difficulty) and if I remember correctly, that's to continue more than twice (maybe more than once), as every death penalizes your rank and every continue severely penalizes your rank. Also, once you've got the hang of the controls, playing the game on Hard increases your chances of holding a greater rank as the game throws just a few more enemies at you, which provides more opportunity to increase your rank.

    • @Duttroid
      @Duttroid 4 роки тому +7

      Also, if one really wants to figure out how to get to the true final boss, they very likely took all or most of the possible paths through the different stages. I did this before figuring out how to truly win and was very satisfied that I saw the entire game.

      This is my 3rd favourite 16-hit console beat ‘em up, with my 1st and 2nd ones being TMNT 4: Turtles in Time (SNES) and Streets of Rage 2 respectively. I like the Conan the Barbarian theme, characters, branching paths, and magic, but it’s definitely rough around the edges. My biggest complaints are the stiff movement and having to beat late-game bosses with cheap tactics. I wish there was a remake or something to remove all the rough areas.

    Golden Axe 3 is an excellent game!
    After playing through each game recently, including both arcade versions and all three Megadrive versions, I still think that Golden Axe 3 is the best playing of all of them. The graphics may have looked a bit dated at the time it was released, but it has so much more than that over the previous two on the Megadrive and even over the much loved Revenge of Death Adder arcade game. It has:
    Branching paths
    Alternative endings
    Interesting enemies
    A better Golden Axe/Conan type of world feel
    Varied stages
    Interesting beasts
    Wide variety of moves
    Unique special moves per character
    Good music
    Nice character animations
    Great intro
    A decent length
    Challenging difficulty
    Better death sounds than the crappy cries in Golden Axe 2
    I don't see why people don't like it. Perhaps they only judge it by the opening stage.

    Having played the first two games since I was a kid, I got to play the third on Switch and, honestly, the gameplay is pretty good when you master the mechanics. Not your regular button mashing beat'em up. Music is also way better than in GA2, and you have different paths.
    The thing that killed this game is the lack of enough different bosses and the horrible backgrounds, which look like they were for Master System. Anything else is pretty good, IMHO.

  • @VegaManX4

    Strongly disagree. Best GA game on Megadrive system in my opinion. Gameplay actually allows player to entertain themselves unlike the first two games with branching paths and result screen providing more replayability than both previous games combined. Sure, enemies are dull (just as in previous iterations, mind you) but at least this feels like a legit co-op with combined magic and 2-player specials. Not to mention 3 possible endings depending primarily on your skill if I recall correctly.

    so, what is the "mad" story? you haven't talked about the development of the game, or why sega was happy releasing it in it's dreadful state in japan. indeed, perhaps a discussion of why it features in re-releases when the quality has been proven awful might have been interesting. as it is, there is no "mad" story here, just a review. i agree wholeheartedly with the review, for what that's worth.
    could you at least discuss the game engine and delve into why the engine from streets of rage 2 was not used, or why the developers were happy with graphics that would, in part, have looked sub-par for a late eighties release? i am thinking of the sky graphics, along with the rock tiles. as it is, the character sprites actually look half-decent. was there an issue with development time? did the release of revenge of death adder take up development resources? i fail to see what research has been done beyond what was previously discussed through other youtube reviews of the game.
    if i seem ungrateful, apologies. after all, it's your hobby, not mine - and you certainly aren't answerable to me!

      I whole heartedly agree with this comment. Perhaps you could do the "Mad" schtory of what went wrong with this review. No research necessary, just introspection. Meanwhile I can look within myself to wonder why I am wasting 15 minute chunks of my life to watch the so called history of my childhood toys, that actually amount to screen shots of the game, and some basic self evident knowledge that anyone who didn't actually already know could learn from a glance at Wikipedia.

You can finish both those games back to back in less time than it takes to finish the third game. Honestly, I think the game is on par but I can't blame anyone for expecting more by this point. Golden Axe III, in my view, was going in the direction of The Super Shinobi II/Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, which would ultimately explain the art and music approach that the game took, both games were in development at the same time and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some form of mutual influence in how both were handled on this front; with Project Mars/the Sega Neptune having been in development at the time, Golden Axe III would've definitely benefited from having a presence in Arcades first and then ported to the console, though the concept of this ultimately becoming a reality was possibly nonexistent, considering that Golden Axe II never saw an Arcade launch and I don't know how financially successful The Revenge of Death Adder was to even consider an Arcade version of Golden Axe III outright, despite how beneficial it would've been to its success, given the Branching Paths mechanic and the potential possibility of allowing you to play as all four characters at once (the latter being a "What if?" scenario).
    Golden Axe III's only real competition on the console front from the Super Famicom in I993 was Final Fight II and Rushing Beat Shura, both of which were severely handicapped in their gameplay due to the low enemy count that one could have onscreen at a given time (three); if I had to choose between the three at the time in Japan, I would still put my money into Golden Axe III, as Final Fight II is a bit too straightforward to warrant constant replayability (unless you're playing the Arcade port) and Rushing Beat Shura is too short to truly get an optimal experience out of what must be anticipated from the third entry in a Brawler franchise (despite its vast cast of characters and branching paths, more than what Golden Axe III delivered), Golden Axe III is exactly what we needed on the gameplay front to feel a genuine sense of challenge while also optimizing the replayability factor.
    It also must be noted that the ROM hack Golden Axe III: RongHe Edition exists: This ROM hack brings forth a more definitive experience with Golden Axe III that allows you to play as every character (with the inclusion of Eve, who was initially supposed to be playable and still exists in the Retail Build's code for using in the Single Player campaign), Six Button Support to allow the ability to use Special Attacks and Magic Specials without complicated button sequences (as well as switching between the five playable characters, Mania Plus' Encore Mode~style), and access literally every single level that the game offers for the utmost complete experience of this title; especially considering that you need a B or A Rank to even fight the Extra Final Boss Battle with Hellstrike proper, this is the best way to do it, you'll likely have enough of a character score that your Rank will be a nonissue and you'll get the full ending as intended, RongHe Edition shows how massive Golden Axe III truly is and it honestly feels more fulfilling when completed this way when compared to what the Retail Build gave us.

It's underwhelming, and I can see where viewers and gamers at the time would have been disappointed that it wasn't more visually appealing. However, it does a number of small things differently and seems to play well, so I don't think it was a total loss.

    EMBARRASSMENT!? EXCUSE ME?
    Golden Axe III may be rough, but is so cool in so many aspects! the amount of different attacks you can pull off is outstanding. And music? OH MAN THE MUSIC.
    Visually it's not impressive, but that's mostly a product of the shortened development time it had. Not because devs weren't competent! It is probably the best of the trilogy.
    Why are you talking about the levels 1 by 1 skipping the alternate paths? besides, it's not always Proud who you fight in the Hamlet: it varies depending on what characters the players are using.
    Dude, I love your videos and reviews, but you're selling this game soooooooo short! I agree: it lacks enemies, too many repeated bosses, visually are not impressive for the time: but the replayability is up there, with tons of special moves per character and branching paths! besides, even if some scenarios were boring, there were cool ones like the Giant Eagle or Death Mountain. I seriously believe is one of the bests of the Trilogy.
    And the soundtrack?! how can you think the soundtrack is bad?! the compositions are amazing! the way they mixed tribal elements like primitive drums with the equivalent to guitars, bass, and synth is pretty cool!
    I am sorry but I have an immortal undying love for this game, and even tho I'm not the best at it, I still play it today and love with all of my Sega kid heart xD
