Maybe the best robot demo ever | Marco Tempest
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 тра 2014
- Marco Tempest uses charming stagecraft to demo EDI, the multi-purpose robot designed to work very closely with humans. Less a magic trick than an intricately choreographed performance, Tempest shows off the robot's sensing technology, safety features and strength, and makes the case for a closer human-robot relationship. (Okay, there's a little magic, too.)

Well now I want to know the other best robots ever lol
Nice Demo...
@@CatBat14 spot,nao
what if... at the end... marco pulled his face off and he was a robot too? now that would have been cool. You would have realized the whole time that you were watching two robots interacting... not a human and a robot. Mind. Blown.
TheAngryCanary ex machina :D
Well my friend
I will give it 50 years in the most pesimistic scenario
just wait 50 years and you will see that kind of show
We are all robots.

"...And stop holding my hand. It is weird."
I watched this entire video thinking this was gonna be a demo of an AI.
It's literally a scritped prop.
It seems like something you'd see at a kids party.
some very, very rich kid's party
Agreed. This expensive toy has nothing on Atlas (except for the "illusion" of AI).

I thought he was gonna reveal Marco Rubio
I kept waiting and waiting... then I started laughing uncontrollably when I realized it was just a cheesy magic show
Where was the magick?
Without any good illusion... His left hand holds the ball... ... ... you can see it...

I was hoping for a Demo on a robot. not a magic show with a robotic pre programmed prop..
Even if that is the case... The robot is still pretty neat
I was hoping it would bear hug and crush him.
Indeed...
Look up Luc Steels though. :) He and his team work on actually cognitive and self-evolving robots.
This just shows how limited your perspective is.

Well, the comment is three years old.
Kids these days are not easily impressed unless it's a silly diss-track about someone famous.

+wild wing777 Not impressed, Im a kid
I'll be showing this to my 4-year-old nephew - while he's still young enough to be impressed by it...
Aww, don't go dissing this fantastic robot! I'm an adult, and I find this video very entertaining! I like Edi and how much personality he has! ^^
“Will you be my friend”
Dude: ignores robot
This is how the world ends
very well set up, I say this is the first time I see such a well elaborate demo. I'm impressed with the progress we are making.
That was embarrassingly bad. Amazing that made it to a Ted stage.
? How do you mean
Neetneet it was no demonstration, just a cheap magic act with a preprogrammed assistant made with slow hardware.
And cheesy .
EuropaWill you have no soul. Have some fun you dummy.
EuropaWill probably meant for kids and also have some humor.
He made something for the wrong audience.
***** The question you have to ask is: How many videos on UA-cam get 25% dislikes? Probably the bottom 10 percentile. It's an okay video, but the title hyped it up to be the "best demo ever". It's fucking 2015 and we have a slab in our pocket who can understand us perfectly when we say "Find me the nearest Italian restaurant". There's an AI that can perform better than doctors at diagnosing diseases, and another one that can automatically label objects in pictures and describe them in language, without any metadata.
Gimicks like the ones presented in this video are basically just animatronics, technology from the 50's.
Noface - i'm curious about what would be the right audience in your opinion?
drout people with a sense of humor
Well said. Not only is this too trivial for a TED audience, it also capitalizes on the TED name to get us to watch it, with higher expectations than it deserves.
Maybe the wrong audience decided to click on this video. Ever think of that?
If YOU are part of the wrong audience, GO AWAY. The right audience will find it.
I don't know which one of them was more robotic...
I felt like a little kid again! I'm smiling on my phone like a fool, and I love it. 😂

I don't think people understand the point of this TED Talk. This wasn't really about the robot as much as it was about what he was saying. TED Talks have always been about great ideas, and thats exactly what Tempest has done here.
I agree
NRB6425
the thing is that a simple student with arduino can do the same, only difference being the budget and a group of people to work on a more refined presentation.. Ted talks just keep losing credibility with this
How beautifully it was presented
MARVELOUS
The most entertaining certainly, maybe not the most informative one, but just pure entertainment
smug is right, titling a video "Maybe the best robot demo ever" when it isnt even a robot demo. It is just a choregraphed performance, a program the runs and has been practiced so the human does exactly his part at the right time, then the robot does what he was programmed to do. Absolutely ZERO interaction with this robot. No AI at all. Pretty lame actually, and more a fraud and con then robotics
+thevancouverguy
agree your idea
+thevancouverguy We have made a lot progress with this particular brand of robot. Yes we programmed this particular one to "put on a show" for demonstartion purposes, but these AI beings do react to the environment, they learn, retain info, remember a person by face, voice, and two of our newer models can even identify you by your smell. That's right. your smell. So... while you troll on youtube in your parents basement, We are making Millions, with 100 percent satisfied customers. So go drive your Pinto to your Gas station job, and leave the intelligence to us smart people. I will think of you, when I go home to my robot, In my big house, with my success. Who really got trolled here? Not us at TED. So it must be you.
The Poet "smart" or intelligent people
thevancouverguy the title did not claim to be an ai robot what it says is robot and this machine is at its roots a robot. The first robots were programmed to preform specific actions. This was meant - from what I can tell - to be like a history of robots and to show you what the original demonstrations would have been like.
It’s a form of ai, expand your vocabulary to lol
You do not make the public more comfortable around robots by giving it cute gimmicks that imitate a personality. The performer thought he could make his words self-demonstrating via his act, but the tech savvy people would rather cut straight to the technical functionality, and the laymen will have no choice but to accept robots for what they end up being, as long as they are of genuine help.
Trying to make humans relate to robots before they posess qualities that are genuinely relatable is only going to make them as obnoxious as the Microsoft Office paperclip assistant. However, once they do develop sufficiently complex modus operandi, quirks and other indicators of genuine personality, people will treat them with empathy whether or not they have a cutesy cartoony face.
Here Here!
This is the only decent criticism i can find in this comment section. A lot of people seem to be missing the idea behind the talk.
Although the title is quite misleading so that doesnt help.
Dude, I liked the Microsoft paperclip guy. He was way better than this iCoatRack.
"iCoatRack" good one :)
It looks like a transforming table lol :-) Ikeabots.... Roll out!
This was an excellent demonstration, I'm flabbergasted that so many people could watch this and not get the message that they're using a technological illusion of simulating intelligence and an amiable personality to make people more comfortable working in close proximity with this machine, especially when he clearly says that that is what is going on.
3:39 you can see the orange in his hand

Actually, out of all the robots I’ve seen, this one is the friendliest one I have ever seen!
Beautiful demonstration
Crap! TED is usually better then this both informative and cutting-edge. I saw a comedian back in the 80's do an entire talking robot act with a Simon Says toy. TED you may want to book him.
“TED: Ideas worth spreading!”, I don’t quite see what worth spreading here!
Everyone hating on this video saying it is fake, preprogrammed, etc. maybe. But the point was in what he said. Most of you probably don’t even know how much time and effort it actually takes to program one six axis robot arm, let alone two seven axis arms to act independently but together. Also there were sensors on it, so it did react to the speaker, but not as much as implied. But look at the amount of effort he went through, and just realize... there is more than meets the eye

Guys!!!!! He wasn't showing us his robot! He was just telling us the way to remove the fear of AI from our Orthodox minds. N he did an amazing job in that. So plz stop giving him hate!!!!
That was absolutely fantastic
I say like many others. This isn't that interesting, since most of this was preprogrammed.
Nice demo of two robotic arms, but nothing new really.
A robot I'd love to see a demo of, is one that anyone can randomly interact with. Both with random conversation (speech recognition and synthesizing), as well as random choreographic interaction.
id like to see one like chappie
+SysGhost Our robots do all of these things and more. This was merely a programmed demo AI bot. Perhaps do some actual research before trolling. Honestly, the ignorance of humans is offensive. Good thing we program them against feeling Human like anger, or the dumb would probably be at their wrath. Good tidings to you, and we will continue being millionares from our inventions. ha
I say i like many others. This comment isnt that GOOD, since most of this is just foolish.
Nice comment of two parts if brain that is not really functioning, but nothing smart really.
A comment that id love to see a kind of, is onne that can understand and actually listen to no to anyone that this videos title is a mistake. With both random conversation about the differences of HUMANS and ROBOTS. And thus not needed a robot whos not feel emotions but have high tech features but thus need a robot who feels emotion even tho it has low quality function. As well as the intelligence of it to understand LIFE itself
That's not E-de, it's Yes Man.
I was thinking the same thing
Hahaha, I thought the same exact thing
Toon town screaming

I don't know why people are complaining, this talk is not about his robot but about robots and how we can live with them and understand them.

Absolutely phenomenal
it is the most beautiful act i see!
Please, don't make them indistinguishable from us!
5:51 u can see a yellow thing
Great show! Thanks Marco. 😃
I don't understand why ppl are so salty. This is one of the best TED talks
Asimo the robot made by Honda is the best by far, this is choreographed, Asimo has much more autonomy.
not true, Asimo is choreographed as hell and it has almost no autonomy
Nao is better and sweater then Asimo.
Using a 100% pre-programmed robot with zero intelligence to talk about how smart they are and have become... wat
The response from audience says it all!!
I loved his presentation 😊
Best robot demo? eehh... Asimo is more impressive.
This robot can actually do something useful ;-)
like fall down stairs because of low battery?
Good point. ASIMO does have the ability to climb up stairs, hop on one foot, etc. And of course the low battery thing happened possibly only one time and possibly a mistake or it didn't have the battery power to last. Besides, it was dumb, ASIMO should be known as an innovative robot and an step up to modern technology. Also, letting a device fall down stairs could be useful to test for shock absorbency and how it can protect itself if it is on low power to prevent damage.
"Best robot DEMO". Not "Best ROBOT demo"
Lex Selfmade Life there are like 20 better robot demos
I don't like this video's title. I found it childish and pointless.
Marco Tempest is always a little difficult for me to watch. But one must appreciate how well he combines science and technology with his art and tricks.
I saw the ball. He's not very good.
NRB6425 I was completely distracted by the hamfisted act, so much so that I can't remember anything he said.
I found your name childish and pointless, you're not a dog.
You're a dog, your best skill is to have eyes only on the ball... if you were human, you would have noticed the important content of the presentation.
Luckily, there were no squirrels on stage.
Dude the presentation was great!
An amazing presentation!
It makes people "nervous" that you can't read a machine's intentions? Really? I've never in my life been able to read another humans intentions, and I've never been "nervous".
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Ok, 1) please use paragraphs so I don't have to read a wall of text that I keep losing my place in.
2) You're assuming that I don't have any kind of mental disabilities. I've never been able to reliably tell if someone is gonna flip out over the weather.
+Noah Williams Well i think that my assumption was a safe one seeing as how most people don't have disabilities that inhibit their ability to read others emotions.
As a rule people have a hard time trusting things that they find unpredictable. just because you are an exception to that rule doesn't mean that rule doesn't exist.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
No, as a rule people don't trust what they see as different. Fact: most schizophrenics that have been in a gun-related incident were the ones being shot, not the ones doing the shooting.
This whole "It's different and therefore bad" mentality has to be eliminated if we are to move forward.
+Noah Williams
"No, as a rule people don't trust what they see as different."
This was said as if you were trying to counter my argument but it only reiterated it.
"Fact: most schizophrenics that have been in a gun-related incident were the ones being shot, not the ones doing the shooting."
And this was said as if you were trying to refute my point but it only illustrates it.

Except plenty of people do trust me.

This is actually the most Advanced robot I’ve ever seen!
Gacha Galaxy Than you need to get out more, there and plenty of robots that would send this guy to the trash compactor!
Its absolutely great work
“The illusion of trust”
Preprogrammed? Not impressed, could have done this like 20 years ago.
It's more about what he is saying and less about the reprogrammed robot.
What's new is that to program it, you just have to place his hands for him to learn something, and he also can work in team with human directly. You should search about it (also only 22000 dollars !)
Maude Potvin That's pretty amazing! It should have definitively been part of the presentation.
Oh I didn't even know that was that "learning robot", I think they (or someone else) did a talk about it previously, that tech certainly didn't exist 20 years ago, from what I remember, this robot here actually isn't just mindlessly 'preprogrammed', its much smarter than that, it will try not to hurt people, and other stuff like Maude mentioned, if this was a robot from 20 years ago you would have to be exact with the script or it could hurt you, this one learns with rehearsal and makes sure to be gentle, not just on a software level, but this things hardware didn't exist 20 years ago either, but that's a whole other thing..
Also we didn't have youtube 20 years ago, so I don't see how we could of done this 20 years ago.
javkiller I don't think you are allowed to sell on Ted....
Thousands thumbs up for this video. Very entertaining. It also change my point of view about few concept. Thanx and Keep it up.
Bruh I just watched an entire ad voluntarily
Nothing about it's own capabilities. Just an elementary level "magic" show. Yawn
stop being so negative and acting cool, i bet you couldnt program a robot for your life.
Mikadie Joyce - Bates yeah and I can’t fly an airplane either but if all someone did was sing to me while driving around the runway while I was promised to be flown around the world I would still have the right to be at least a tiny bit ticked. We were promised a robotics demo not a magic show and history of the word ‘robot’ just to pad for time for the fact he truly has nothing to show for it. And if what some of the other comments are saying are true, the robot isn’t even that impressive, and was even built with unreliable and cheap equipment.
Jacob C that’s a fair point
Mikadie Joyce - Bates thanks and sorry for some typos I went and fixed them.
*_I WAS SO TRIGGERED WHEN YOU TOOK HIS HAT_*
I wanna see more of this,
This was sooo cool!
Everybody's like "pfft. so choreographed", but I am like read the descriptions:
Marco Tempest uses charming stagecraft to demo EDI, the multi-purpose robot designed to work very closely with humans. Less a magic trick than an intricately choreographed performance, Tempest shows off the robot's sensing technology, safety features and strength, and makes the case for a closer human-robot relationship. (Okay, there's a little magic, too.)
well, you see, he destroyed it by staging the whole thing. it would have been far more impressive if he did just one random thing.
it was mentioned that it was choreographed. i think people actually expected a "best robot" that would meet their expectations that they made without reading the description.
peterpiperdiedharper It doesn't matter if it was mentioned or not. Any kid can program the same scripted sequence. People are annoyed by the fact how unoriginal and useless this is given it was titled as the best demo ever. It turned out to be just nothing.
yea, i see. given that it's from TED one kinda expects to be blown away because of so many awesome videos that are in this channel.
peterpiperdiedharper not exactly, I have seen a lot of poor performances on TED, that's not the point. The thing is that it could be done like 30 years ago. It is not contemporary robotechnics. And if he wanted to really present something new, he could have just shown some realistic and random things the robot can do. I would be blown away easily if he showed the same things but done in real time. If the robot is capable of doing them why the hell wouldn't you want to show them? You know what I mean?
For example he stands in front of the robot and moves hands, the robot responds, then he stands in the same spot and robot does nothing. Or he speaks to it and it responds, the next minute it doesn't. How do his sensors work? How does it operate in general? Wouldn't you prefer this demo rather than the one in the video? Be honest with me.
When they hold gun blast 😂
Waiting for BEST part!!!
This is VERY VERY VERY well done, really...
I don't see anything special here. Just a sequence of preprogrammed actions, boring and useless.
Too true...
This was fairly embarrassing... This same exact demo could have been performed at Epcot in the early 80's. There are vastly more interesting things being done with robotics and AI these days.
omg I love the animation
I for 1 quite enjoyed this performance
“Illusion of trust”
who is your audience - 5 year old
that robot is still holding that ball in right hand.
This robot was manufacture by Rethink robotics, (same company that manufactures Rumba , the vacuum cleaner Robot) this Robot had so many gliches they do not sell any more. The company came out with a robot called Sawyer a great leap in robotics for Rethink robotics.Video's are available on you tube.

Hay que considerar primeramente que este video es de hace 5 años... de alli el título "la mejor demostracion de robot jamas vista".
This was obviously staged... But still cool to watch!

I thought it was not staged.
