Absolute travesty that zombie Moon Pope didn’t crack the top 10.
Turns out he also has further significance, as the father of both Gisa and Geralf. I don't know how the Moon Pope manages to produce some of the most renowned necromancers on a plane chockful of them, but there you go.

My friend has a deck like this, she somehow always manages to win by kicking Josu, without using tutors for him or Crypt Ghast which she also always manages to draw.

A week late but oh man I adore this L.O.R.E. format so much, really hope it can somehow cover every legendary in the game at some point.
I didnt know that Varina's lore was so cool, and she is one of my favorite commanders too. I really hope we get to visit some of the planes that have commander set legendaries on them.

Daxos seems like he should be an orhzov card. Creature death doing good things for you is definitely a black attribute.
Even though he only got 27th, Haakon is one of the greatest in my eyes. The commander deck I made for him is one of the funnest decks I own since you basically have to do a side quest just to cast him haha. Plus being able to recast a kicked Josu from the graveyard is a great time.
What about my favorite commander, Grusilda, Monster Masher?

I’m lifetime zombie player, I picked up the Prerelease foil of Josu when he came out because I wanted to go all out with him in my deck. Gotta say he’d rock that Golden Mustache into battle. Now I’ve gotta draw the mustache on his sleeve!

yeah, between this and the very emotional ending to the Who is Kaervek video, I really like these small but impactful nods to real-world events. I can't pin down exactly why, but I always love these small moments
Trump has denounced racism on a dozen occasions. I'm not American so I don't have any skin in the game and don't have any interest in getting in a political debate. But if you pretend that he hasn't then you're either being disingenuous or ignorant and that's just a fact. Love him our hate him, I couldn't care less, certainly there are enough legitimate things to dislike him for without having to make stuff up. You just weaken your own position by lying about your enemies, if you're actually better than them you can criticize things they're actually guilty of.
I can imagine him coming over to visit for the holiday and he just sees spice knee deep in spreadsheets and gives a very unsurprised face
@@alexanderforbes1452 oh for fuck's sake he repeatedly refused to condemn various white supremacist groups while stressing that there were "good people" in there too. He pushed for years racist made up conspiracies against his political rivals, and openly encouraged harassment of minority advocates on multiple occasions. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Him paying lip service to "let's all not be racist and be together" while systematically behaving in a diametrically opposed way to said buzzwords is so incredibly easy to see through, that it seems that the one being disingenuous is you my friend.
Anyways would love for this MTG cinematic universe to come to pass, and I think Spice's Cool Uncle is a top tier title
Thanks for this. I learned a lot of new lore, particularly about Varina and Sedris. Varina is a lot more interesting than I had thought in passing if she has access to essentially infinite zombies with powers that sound somewhere between Teferi's and Liliana's.
This list did make me realize how weird it is that only a few of the Legendary Zombies can return from the grave repeatedly by themselves though. It also made me realize that so far the only Zombie Vedalken we have gotten is the rather forgettable Vedalken Ghoul, though technically it might be the first card with Afflict. Maybe we'll get a zombified Dovin Baan as a legendary card in Return to Return to Return to Ravnica given _Forsaken_ isn't just being retconned out of existence unfortunately.
I think sedris makes a cameo or is quoted in a lore chapter during alara, i remember a human wizard that was in war against him

I’m pretty sure that Korlash, Heir to Blackblade is from an alternate future (possibly still the main future if blackblade is reforged again and sent back to Dominaria) along with all the other Grandeur creatures

thank you for another amazing video! MtG lore has some of my favorite fantasy subject matter, period. I don't know if it's been suggested, but i think it would be fabulous if you did a video on the birth of Akroma/Karona and the Torment story in general. It's a seriously underrated chapter in Magic's history
Pedantic nitpick alert: Haakon is pronounced "HA-kun" with a short "a". IRL, Haakon is a somewhat common Norwegian name, being most closely associated with several kings of Norway. Actually, the story of Haakon IV's rescue from certain assassination as an infant ("Two noble warriors secretly escort baby Haakon and his mother through 50km of enemy territory and a fierce blizzard! Will they reach safety?!") would fit in well with the Magic lore.
Also, Varina helms my Esper Zombies EDH list, which has like four infinite combos revolving around infinite drain of life.
When my playgroup got the first commander precons, I particularly enjoyed referring to Oros the Avenger as "Oros the Racist Dragon" because he deals damage to all non-white creatures. Today I learned Oros is not magic's only racist dragon.
12:30 to 12:55 gave me some goosebumps. I'm still trying to learn the story bits and I had no idea about the background of the word "Grixis". I love this lore!

Naheb didn't fail the trails, he actually won. The reward just happens to be getting killed and prepared for becoming an Eternal.
Before I watched this I wondered where Josu would fall since my affection for Liliana is completely normal. By the time my head was filled with tons of new information after the top 29, I found myself wondering who would win the Golden Mustache. I guess all that sweet lore ate my brain. While I think Josu does deserve the top spot, I think Storrev could have been 2nd. While she was in standard she could reanimate my creatures and pws in the grave!
Also, all the God-eternals were not created equal, Oketra (the card) is a much better zombie. She spawns 4/4 tokens with vigilance!
As a necromancer planeswalker, this list was very helpful! I see a lot of potential hires!
You really need to redo this list after Commander Legends and Kaldheim! Nevinyrral and Narfi should have some good scores. There's also the Abomination of Llanowar and Tormod the Descrator. There's some really flavorful stuff here.
My very first commander trabil deck was black. Now that game and cards change and added now proudly have black and white zombie!.

I used to love playing my Bladewing the risen deck with Balathor and Neheb in the ninety nine... Blow up everything with board wipes and mass reanimate all the dragons with balathor. XD

I had no idea Geralf named Grimgrin after his sister. That's a really fun bit of lore. If you ever do a ranking of mtg siblings, I'd expect Gisa and Geralf to be near the top of that list.
Other good siblings: Urza and Mishra, Ugin and Bolas, Jeska and Kamahl, Josu and Liliana

Grimgrin was my first commander I started building around
I was planning to build a new Commander deck, this helped narrow it down. Zombies is one of my favorite tribes.
Josu is my mono black commander just because he can change a match so fast.

A coincidence that I was improving my Grimgrin, Corpse-born Commander deck as this video was released today, I was hoping for more in his back ground but being a big zombie stitched together he doesn't have much of a back story compared to some of the other named zombies on that list. He's still my favorite zombie for sharing similar parts of my last name and I was pleased with how he placed on the list
So glad josu was placed first he is my favorite for the fact that his card is a perfect reflection of what he does in the lore
GrimGrin was my first Commander, until I needed to add Green to the deck. but he is still in said deck (Sidisi was the replacement).
Haakon is my favorite zombie, because his mechanic is so unique and cool
Tresserhorn is one of my favorite commanders sad to see him so low but great video either way.

I am specially fond of Dralnu as depicting the first zombie lord that gave this tribe that much deserved +1/+1 as a well designed "Lord of Undead" card. Also, the homage paid to Lich enchantments in its drawback? ability is certainly a hit.
The flashback part was surely grafted to cover set design needs, but, it's still magic from the 'yard (and lichs are mages, in addition to reanimators)
Maybe it deserves a little more. Maybe not for its legendary incarnation, but for the relevance of the character as an archetypical Lich (a zombie wizard) with lore relevance.
And Kraum... shouldn't be on its card... Despite type line and art, Kraum is clearly not a zombie at all.
