I had a "fun" time in DF once. It was early summer, and the dwarves had not settled long. Across the plains flowers of countless colours grew, and many a dwarf picked them, either because they had some culinary or romantic use. It was a day like any other, and the dwarves where flower picking as usual when a lone small human child wandered towards the dwarven territory. The child was dressed in dirty rags and had obviously traveled far. Curious and perhaps worried for the child many dwarves stopped their merry flower picking to walk to see and greet the visitor, and offer them what few refreshments they had. But this was no ordinary child. As soon as the dwarves got close the child transformed into a horrible beast- a were-giraffe (i kid you not) and flew into a rage, brutally murdering any dwarf who got near. Any who were close were torn apart, and those who were at a distance fled for their lives. Those who could that is. Blankets of blood drenched the petals of unpicked flowers. The child returned to its human state, surrounded by the mangled corpses of those too slow. The remaining dwarves rushed the child and beat it to death right there. The dwarves who survived were traumatised by the events forever after. They say after that event visitors were not welcome, and the occupants prefered to hide deep below in the dark. They only came out to trade supplies with other fortresses, and never to humans. Especially children. Df is great. I dont think ive ever played a video game where the story is so intertwined with gameplay.
That and a dwarf who refuses to put on a left boot wielding a stone sarcophagus as a weapon to kill enemies, then stuff their corpses into the sarcophagus to make it heavier so it would kill the next enemy easier. At the last count I was aware of, that sarcophagus contained the corpses of 33 goblins, 18 troglodytes, 3 forgotten beasts, and 2 dragons. All stuffed into a single stone box, which was then violently swung at anything that looked remotely enemy-like, whose broken bodies were then stuffed into the box after.
That fog zombie story reminds me of ghouls from fallout. The end of the zombie was surprisingly sad. I'm a week in and hope I get some solid stories like these
”And as for the dragon..........................*he was captured* Me:Wut?Dont tell be you locked him in a wooden cage, really, thats just impossible,so please, tell me you didnt do that
dang, the story of the fisherdwarf actually made me cry, this is the power of dwarf fortress, i consider myself quite the imaginative person, and a story like that is beyond me, rest well sweet fisher of the fog, may your legend live on in the hearts of dwarves of that land forever
I just wanna say I'm pretty satisfied with your videos so far. Ever since I saw your first roguelike video linked from GFAQs. Even my fiancée has liked your Gemspears stories and roguelike series. Good job man.
Gotta love that last one. I'd love to have a captured dragon as a sort of last resort weapon during a massive invasion. I may actually build a fort with the sole purpose of doing this.
Having a tamed dragon sounds great and all, but even when they've been tamed, dragons love to breathe fire everywhere, and fire doesn't care whether you're a friend or not
I can tell you why Trooth from my own Channel's experience....Because its Dwarf Fortress and there a LOTTTTT of people that love watching it being played and expecially since you are present some of NUMEROUS Crazy Stories that come out of Dwarf Fortress session.
You know, you could retire your fort temporarily, have an adventurer with a lot of swimming skill come from the fort, take the mace from the river, use it in battle for awhile, then return to the fort and retire. A couple weeks fort time lost, mace regained.
@@grablin6654 adventure mode was used in boatmurdered? So like back in the single layer days? Tbh I think an adventure mode break+reclaim might fix gemspears corrosive beast blood problem
I come back to this video occasionally. I love the fisherman story. It sounds like a real bit of folklore and really showcases how good DF is at creating stories.
2gb ram lock... Cpu is the only compenent that realy matters and can easyly be forced to its knees thanks to dw beeing singlecore and simulating everything
probably you can find a mod that make dwarf fortress use multiple cores (that exists too rim world,it is a game from 2013,soo probably exists too dwarf fortress)(sorry any english errors,i an brazilian and i just know the basics of writing in english and i cant remember the correctly way of using some words and etc)
I once created a small world and began building my first fort. With the first wave of migrants came one dwarf with a terrible secret. Upon the rising of the full moon, her body twisted into that of a weremouse! The fort fought it off, but the casualties rose. This was before I learned the need to isolate bite victims mind you. I kept fighting more and more weremice until the fort had fallen. I tried several times to start new forts in that land, but it seemed that the population of weremice grew with each one. I don't know if the land was cursed by an angry God, or if my inability to contain the scourge doomed the world. Eventually, I pulled the plug on it. Now I know why i fear the night!
these stories make me wish I still had my first ever Dwarf Fortress world... it had a badass line of kings that all were descended of a butcher. Who was the 'local' hero of one of my first forts on that world.
Same here. I installed the Lazy Newb pack, and installed the best tile set. (32p?). Actual images for most icons. Got the grips in a few hours. Remember, Loosing is Fun
first video i have seen of yours, and your voice was really familiar and it bugged me for like 10 hours. realised you either are, or sound exactly like, the guy from 99% invisible
and thus zodd was born. but a quick question if you still check these comments, i doubt it but what happened to the vampire during the fall of gemspears?
Ooh man, it's been a long time since I played the fort, but... I think what I did was construct a little 3x3 room for him on the surface, at the entrance of the fort, and either I set him loose on the day of a big goblin invasion, or he's still sitting in that cell WAITING for a big goblin invasion. Essentially, he was set aside as the military's secret weapon.
i didn't expect you to reply to fast, caught me off guard, but nice to see you're still active man, anyway, its a shame that you never got to put him to use after he caved that minotaur's chest in, would love to hear about a rampaging vampire with legendary stats, if you still have it, what was his name?
I just loaded up that old version of the game to find out, but I think he was eventually killed in a goblin invasion, because he doesn't seem to be currently alive in the fort anymore. His above-ground cell is now holding a dragon in a cage. And with over 1900 units in the "dead/missing" list, I don't think I can conceivably find his name.
This video is old , I never play that game , never even hear about this channel , and don't understand anything in the screen , BUT I for sure gona use the story of that dwarf fisherman and his tragic story
I'm sure I do, but I'm not sure how to share a DF save file. Plus, Gemspears was played on version 34.05, it looks like, so I'm not sure if it would easily transfer to the newest version, or if it has to be played on that one.
So much hype about the "touching" fisher dwarf story, that puts fairy tails "Happy" character too shame. (Might be an unfitting reference.) "Taming dragons" is also highly admired topic, but let's be real here the fierce fight of the nyan cat and metal gear drogon puts all other stories too shame.
The zombie fisherman story was great. It sounds like a legit real world folklore. What a unique and intriguing creature.
this game proves to be amazing even when you think you've seen everything
Man, I'm telling that story to my little cousins at the next family reunion! I might change the dwarves to humans and name the fisherman Aros.
Hmm.
A dwarf arena.
There are necromancers.
I HAVE AN IDEA!
The Silver Mace of the Riverbed is as much a legend as the Fisherman of the Fog. *Real* legends.
Captivated by the heartbreaking tale of the Zombie fisherdwarf. *cries*
H-h-he was the most l-l-loyal of them all! *sniffles*

Max Theawesome wow
A narcoleptic dragon missing a foot idiotically chasing a cat around is a great example of what dwarf fortress is at its best.
That and a dwarf who refuses to put on a left boot wielding a stone sarcophagus as a weapon to kill enemies, then stuff their corpses into the sarcophagus to make it heavier so it would kill the next enemy easier.

Cats chase little creatures. Dragons chase little creatures too apparently.
These stories are amazing! It's like they came from a professional writer, and not a procedural fantasy game.
RIP IN PEACE FISHERDORF
That dragon is literally the worst at being a dragon out of all of them.
not even a cat can it catch
maybe it was having a rough day. for all we know it might have even been friendly had someone tried to communicate with it.
Stag Dragon Nothing says friendly like chasing a cat and trying to burn it alive.
A three legged severe narcaleptic dragon.
XD.
This game looks amazing Im gonna try to get it.
That fog zombie story reminds me of ghouls from fallout. The end of the zombie was surprisingly sad. I'm a week in and hope I get some solid stories like these
Those dwarfs in the last story must have been Russian. "In Soviet Dwarvin Fort, dragons no capture fortress...FORTRESS CAPTURE DRAGONS!"
May the zombie fisherdwarf rest in peace
”And as for the dragon..........................*he was captured*
Me:Wut?Dont tell be you locked him in a wooden cage, really, thats just impossible,so please, tell me you didnt do that
He did it lmao.
These story videos are amazing. I really hope you decide to make a part 3 of this, as it's probably some of my favorite dwarf content on the platform!
the story of the worse dragon ever made me snort my drink.
dang, the story of the fisherdwarf actually made me cry, this is the power of dwarf fortress, i consider myself quite the imaginative person, and a story like that is beyond me, rest well sweet fisher of the fog, may your legend live on in the hearts of dwarves of that land forever

Having a tamed dragon sounds great and all, but even when they've been tamed, dragons love to breathe fire everywhere, and fire doesn't care whether you're a friend or not
True that, perhaps I'll try to use it near the entrance when the fort becomes sealed off. I'll try to figure some way around the whole fire thing.
I can tell you why Trooth from my own Channel's experience....Because its Dwarf Fortress and there a LOTTTTT of people that love watching it being played and expecially since you are present some of NUMEROUS Crazy Stories that come out of Dwarf Fortress session.
Ohhhhhh my Goodness.... The Dragon Story is Bad ass! The second one at least
+Yandere Clementine Loved them both, but the kicker on the second story is the best
David Burton Agreed! :D
The vile fog zombie fisherdwarf story was the best one I've ever heard.
You know, you could retire your fort temporarily, have an adventurer with a lot of swimming skill come from the fort, take the mace from the river, use it in battle for awhile, then return to the fort and retire. A couple weeks fort time lost, mace regained.
Story ruined...
And btw as i know there was no adventure mode for that time
@@grablin6654 adventure mode was used in boatmurdered? So like back in the single layer days?
Tbh I think an adventure mode break+reclaim might fix gemspears corrosive beast blood problem
In TRUE Dwarf Fortress Tradition.... reroute the river...duh.
I come back to this video occasionally. I love the fisherman story. It sounds like a real bit of folklore and really showcases how good DF is at creating stories.
I loved the fisherman story, but the narcoleptic dargon one was funny af
I come back to this video every once in a while. I still remember all of the stories.
The fisherman zombie story has to be the most wholesome thing I've ever heard in this game
this is the greatest game ever trapped behind weak computers
2gb ram lock...
Cpu is the only compenent that realy matters and can easyly be forced to its knees thanks to dw beeing singlecore and simulating everything
is there no way around that?

I'VE SEEN YOU ON THE ROME TW SERIES BY MANY A TRUE NERD! Damn this is cool. Also RIP that fisherdwarf and Aulus Augustus.
I've never played this game, but these stories are so intriguing to listen to.

I'm tearing up at the zombie fisherdwarf, such a sad story :(
these stories make me wish I still had my first ever Dwarf Fortress world... it had a badass line of kings that all were descended of a butcher. Who was the 'local' hero of one of my first forts on that world.
How did the butcher become king?
That's just how diplomacy works in DF. Anybody can become king if they work for it!
Brilliant! Well done! Your telling of the tale of the fisher dwarf was amazing.
I really want to play this, but I can't understand the visuals in the slightest
Same here. I installed the Lazy Newb pack, and installed the best tile set. (32p?). Actual images for most icons. Got the grips in a few hours. Remember, Loosing is Fun
Watch Kruggsmash videos for a while, you will begin to understand it. Then maybe use his tileset
thats what i call FUN!
I still play this game the same way my grandma plays Call of Duty, but I fucking love these stories.
You know what we need? Moving fortresses... WHEELS! Maybe powered by lava or steam... MODS PEOPLE, MODS.
first video i have seen of yours, and your voice was really familiar and it bugged me for like 10 hours.
realised you either are, or sound exactly like, the guy from 99% invisible
The Fisher dwarf omg that was amazing
So loyal even in undeath, so tragic but sweet end
MORE MORE MORE!
I wasn't too impressed by the first two stories, but the third one just knocked me on my ass laughing. Thanks man, I need that :D
awesome storytelling skillz!
Great stories! Think I'll have to start playing DF after all :)
XD ahahahaha, strangulation...
+Samuel Auditama Strangulation is HILARIOUS, m i rite
XD AHAHAHA, dude, days and days...Strangalathon in Gemspears
This is lovely i and very relaxing
and thus zodd was born. but a quick question if you still check these comments, i doubt it but what happened to the vampire during the fall of gemspears?

i need to start playing Dwarf Fortress
more dwarf stories if you have them pls
dope stories, I need more
the end of the last story is so awesome! i just begin the game. how much did you play to see and recognize these events?
Thats dragon tamer`s dwarfs, "Machos"
This is awesome.
This video is old , I never play that game , never even hear about this channel , and don't understand anything in the screen , BUT I for sure gona use the story of that dwarf fisherman and his tragic story
Ouch, my heart.
Wait did these stories actually happen while you were playing?
This is exactly like the reading of d'aulaires book of greek myths by paul newman
thid video respects a ☼
do you have a save file for gemspears?
I'm sure I do, but I'm not sure how to share a DF save file. Plus, Gemspears was played on version 34.05, it looks like, so I'm not sure if it would easily transfer to the newest version, or if it has to be played on that one.
Fucking Love This Lol
Subscribed.
nice
I love you 😘
You sound like SsethTzeentach.
dude I can't tell is it him?
Fuckin priceless

What the fuck is this game
The most detailed game about drunk midgets
"Dwarf Fortress"
The most complex game ever written, with graphics like the days of before the first Nintendo or Sega.
