Had my R5C since December, loved every minute of it and was thrilled when i finally updated the firmware, one of the best cameras canon has ever made. Great video guys!!
Canon have confirmed it will be going live again on the 30th June!! Hey everyone, sorry to see that Canon removed the firmware from the site. My contact at Canon has told me this was to resolve a minor bug and it should be back online asap! I will update this comment and reply to this thread as soon as I get confirmation it’s been republished!! Thanks for watching as always, Jake
Could you please ask them when they going to release Box shaped Or Komodo like camera? Right now R5C price is $3999… its very tempting. want to buy the second body ( i own R5c and R5 currently)… but don’t want to buy if they are releasing a new Cine camera in a month or two.
Just got this Camera 6 months ago and absolutely love it. I mostly shoot photos. But have been doing move video/content creation lately. Really excited to get my camera updated.
Yes, it’s pretty sad. The Canonsphere gets excited and acts like Canon is listening. Yet, they continue to lose ground to Sony, and no, I’ve been Canon since 2006.
This camera has been on my list to buy for ages. And today, I've just ordered it from CVP. They had some discount on it and Canon are also doing £500 cash back. Can't wait to get it. I film a lot of weddings with my C200, but now , I also do a lot of social media content for local businesses where I take photos and videos, so its just perfect for me. I'll also be using it as my b cam for weddings.
Great Video! Some good updates from Canon. But it blows my mind how we continue to ask for custom Anamorphic desqueeze and no one at Canon will listen or respond. 1.3, 1.8, and 2.0 but not 1.5?! 😑
Personally, I never rely on a small camera screen for anamorphic desqueeze. IMO, the view you get on these small screen is way too narrow and makes it difficult to frame and to focus. I prefer using an external monitor, like my SmallHD Indie 7 that has all the desqueeze options available, all the exposure tools and also...a much bigger screen.
I replaced my Fuji XT3 with the R5C and I'm just so in love with the camera. I shoot photo and video and the biggest update for me was the speed of switching modes. I mainly use the camera for travel and documenting my 11 month old as sort of a modern "Camcorder" with photo and video. I had a feeling Canon would address the switch time so that didn't scare me away from the camera in the beginning. I've had it for about 6 months and really enjoy the camera. It's for sure OVERKILL for my needs but I wanted something I can "grow" into and use it for some small paid gigs here and there if I want. The IQ is amazing I think and I wanted it over the R5 mainly because of the video tools that are not included in the R5 ie. waveforms, vector scopes, ect. and some others to just name a few. I currently only use the camera with the 24-105mm F4, and the 50mm 1.8 and honestly its a great combination. The lens IS is plenty for what I need it for and even the digital IS is fine when I need a bit of stability for the 50mm. I would consider adding a 100-500mm lens and maybe the 135mm and honestly call it a day. The 24-105 F4 does have some low light limitations and having to bump up to 3200 iso for video but if I'm shooting at 24p and 50 shutter it's not that bad. I can see myself keeping this camera for a very long time, I just hope Canon keeps up with the firmware and doesn't treat it like the 1DXc.
@@SamMasghatiI don’t think you understand what shutter angle is. It’s measured in degrees not in the usual shutter speed values. Even non-shutter-angle cameras can get rid of the flicker if you go below double-the-frame-rate rule but that doesn’t mean those said camera have shutter angle just because they get rid of the flicker in certain shutter speeds. If your shutter speed isn’t measured in degrees then it doesn’t have shutter angle, it’s just that simple.
Huge update! Solves a lot of those frustrating things you would have expected a camera like this to have in the first place. It truly is the best hybrid in the game.
@@itsmhmd3479any time of the day. As a hybrid camera it’s no contest. The A7S3 has only 12mpx for stills. The R5C not only shoots 45mpx stills but it can also shoot 8K60 from which you can extract high res stills.
with the c70 and r5c getting big firmware updates its difficult to get a sense of how their respective autofocus match up post launch! it would be nice to see a comparison from current day! Maybe even with the R5 or R6mii as well to really get a sense of where canons video AF stands at the moment. if not now, certainly when the R5ii or R1 release with (potentially) the new quad pixel AF
It's interesting that you guys seem to think that WideDR is a middle ground between Canon709 and Log as well as handling highlights better. For me, Canon709 fixes most of my problems with using WideDR. First, WideDR always had a problem with really noisy shadows due to slightly lifting the black levels. WideDR gave the appearance that useable detail was being maintained in the shadows while shooting, but when you got home and looked at the footage you would realize it was a noise mess. Canon709 drops the shadows enough to crush out some of that noise. Second, when using a WideDR LUT for log footage, the LUT would actually clip all of the highlights when using FCPX. The CMT709 LUT doesn't do this. In addition, it is easier to work with and monitor footage that doesn't push over 100 IRE. Interestingly, Canon709 is very similar to a modified WideDR that I used to use on my Canon C100, so I'm thinking that other videographers were giving Canon the same feedback and they finally updated the original WideDR to Canon709 based on the suggested adjustments. I'm at the point where I would be more than happy to use Canon709 instead of Clog3 for most of my work.
I always shoot WideDR (until now) with Half stop to one stop over exposed and bringing it down later in the post that clears shadow ( also i enable noise reduction within camera- it does a great job). However, my grip of WideDR is about highlights roll off…
Your content is amazing sir, you are talking about a lot of cameras and brands but I would suggest that please make some content of cinematography on the Nikon's flagship camera Z8 and Z9.
Still missing some obvious enhancements like C-Log2 (if only to match with other C series cameras on a shoot) and more anamorphic squeeze factors (I use Laowa Nanomorph and there's no 1.5x desqueeze available, for example), or a customisable desqueeze option would solve this for all future types. Thanks for the video! :)
I know you have test the C500 II, can you share your thoughts about How superior or close these cameras are in terms of image Quality, look and feel, AF, Dynamic range, color and ISO performance. 4K 10 bit and 6k Raw
From a get go… R6II is no option as it doesn’t shoot DCI 4K. And it overheats. Canon Cine menu is amazing. Shutter angle, Dual ISO And image monitoring tools etc are big advantages of R5C.
Looks like Canon have pulled it down from the site, I’ve messaged one of my contacts at Canon to see why as I downloaded it last week from their site!! Jake
The fact they branded this as a Cinema grade cameras with the fancy C badge but do not provide CLOG2 kind of baffles me, and for the high price tag If you do at least 30% photo and mainly do video this is still a decent camera but if you need a peppery cinema camera why not just go for the C70. Especially since the price are soo close
A log gamma is intended to provide more than 10 stops of dynamic range when recording in a 10 bit capture file. The sensor of the R5C doesn't provide as wide a dynamic range as that of the C70 (although it does provide greater picture clarity). Clog2 records a greater range than the R5C provides; and consequently you would be throwing away information by squashing it into fewer bits as compared to Clog3 which would better spread the information over the 10 recording bits.
@@KeithSklower I do agree and fully understand (I own both the c70 and r5c) but Canon still should provide Clog 2 for the R5C. Give us the ability to make that decision for ourselves like Sony gives you Slog 3 in cameras that only shoot 8 bit and the sensor obviously can't handle it. I do agree that the R5C may not be able to take full advantage of clog 2 but for example, sensors on the R3 sure can yet it does not have an option for clog 2 in 4k modes.
How R5 C deals with third party EF lenses. I have EOS cameras and a lot of lenses, including Tamron, Sigma and Zeiss, and I am interested in using them in R5 C, instead of reinvesting into a lot of new lenses.
For a real cinema calera I prefer the Canon C70. Much better image and internal nd filters is king. For a hybrid camera I'd take a Canon R3 over this. Such a underated camera. Swicth to video mode in a fraction of second, 6k raw 12bit, IBIS, great 4k 120fps etc
Have your ever tried R3 for video? Please give it a try. You will change your opinion. I humbly ask you to give a try with both R5C and R3 side by side please.
"Much better image" - not true in the sense of image resolution. R5c is FF 8K. More pix info. But C70 DG sensor has more DR. True about R3. My fav too.
I'm still waiting for a hybrid camera with internal ND's for video mode. Perhaps a future R3C or R1C? A stacked sensor would be necessary as I imagine the mechanical shutter would have to go.
We may have to wait 5 more years for that from Canon. They have technology ( they proved it with C70- they need to increase the sensor size to full frame, get rid of mechanical shutter and make it global shutter and increase resolution to make it as hybrid camera)… its just that they don’t want to do it now.
@@udy0243 I think you're right, but it's a shame. I will move system to whomever does it first, whether its Sony, Nikon, Panasonic or Canon. Internal ND's are absolutely essential for me (I do ENG and documentary, both stills and video) and current hybrids unfortunately cannot satisfy that need so I need to to keep a dedicated video camera beside my stills system.
@@daniellove162 Magnetic definitely has advantages and I think it would be good enough for shooting documentary/ENG. But I want a camera that automatically retracts the ND and changes the settings when I switch between photo and video mode on the camera.
Thank you for your in-depth review videos.. really appreciate them.! Quick Q.. I've been searching for and not finding any info on whether there is a LANC remote connection or alternative for the R5C as I really want to be able to start/stop recording without removing my hand from the pan arm... many thanks in advance and all the best to you.. g
Hey George, Hope you're well! The R5C has an N3 port on the front. I've just had to do some googling and someone on DPReview has said that the Canon Remote Switch RS-80N3 works with it to toggle record! I know it's not going to be as nice as a regular LANC controller to attach to a tripod, but hopefully this helps! Thanks for the kind words, we appreciate them!! Jake
@@CVPTV thanks so much Jake for taking the time to answer my question.. that was the only solution that I found as well.. which is slightly disappointing but is what it is I guess. Many many thanks.. g
In my opinion, the R52 will be more photocentric.. may be more pixels in resolution, but already shoots 8K 30 as it is... probably it will push 8K60? 🤔 hard to say... Who knows may be they will add 6K...? but then.. if they do.. what will the R1 have....? :).
@@alfredknodler540 To be honest I don't know yet... the C70 is a great camera yes! For some reason I am thinking of the FX6 & FX3 for documentary work... but so far, still deciding...
this is the perfect time to get the R5C since Canon is making a good deal on it for its 50th anniversary. I got mine with 3 extra batteries for a decent price. If you are a video shooter, go with the R5C anytime and dont wait for the R5ii since it is more photocentric.
The r5II will most likely eliminate overheating and will have no recording limit but it definitely won’t have the video OS so will lack waveforms, false color, custom LUTs, shutter angle etc etc. if those are important for you then get the r5c or just buy an external monitor with those features.
Hey can you help me? When I make a video, I am having trouble to open it on my computer. I don’t know what cause that. The pc opens my old video from r5c.
Looks like Canon have pulled it down from the site, I’ve messaged one of my contacts at Canon to see why as I downloaded it last week from their site!! Jake
@@CVPTVthere is a reported bug on the photo side of the firmware. Apparently some of the code from the the new pixel shift feature they added to the R5 made it to this version… but of course that wouldn’t work because the R5C doesn’t have IBIS
Great video! I’m curious for a retailer like you who could probably use anything, what stops you from going with an A1 or A74 for your BTS because of those power issues? Is there’s something you really prefer about the R5C?
4K 60 fps no crop. Big for me. Colors are excellent. I want natural and close to that straight out of camera. Pair with canon 14mm zoom is only someone canon is offering.
Yes it is, its typical canon af behavior when recording video. It gives slight initial tracking delay when subject are accelarating /decelerating. Sony stick to subject no matter what. While canon deliberately delay the af actuation to mimic 'focus pulling' .
Is the camera better than the FX3? I prefer the Canon image but it seems big and bulky compared to the FX3 and I don’t own any RF/ EF lenses. Do you guys think it is worth investing in for narrative filmmaking?
narrative in what sense? most people rent gear. If you own emount glass already stick with FX3, canon glass then go with this 🤷 Proper cine glass might be a better investment but if you live in Los Angeles or any other major city then you could rent an Arri Alexa for like $100 a day sometimes
I own both camera's and here's my 2 cents: I kinda hate the R5c and it's mostly from the form factor and ultra high resolution sensor. My biggest complaint is that I get a realistically 30min of use out of a standard canon battery which makes the camera unusable if you're on a set. You almost have to rig the camera up to vmount or a similar battery. Secondly, you have to use micro HDMI, which is awful. Lastly, 8k is unnecessary in most of my work and it's resource hungry for something a lot of people don't use. It's way sharper than the FX3, but I'm not a fan of overly sharp images anyway. Last, lastly, RF glass is not as common as emount and is crazy expensive in comparison. I much prefer my sony cameras in almost every way. My only complaints about the FX3 is the plastic-y skin look that it produces and the canon has better menus.
You know what they didnt add….tons of amazing video lens options that dont exist in the rf line. If you buy this for video you are choosing a hammer when you needed an axe.
@@cinematools9621 no, from my understanding clog is like a picture profile but instead of adding "filters" to the video coming out the sensor and destroying "information", clog is no filter, giving you the freedom to make creative decisions in post. You can record Clog in MP4 if your camera supports it, like the Canon C100.
@@CVPTV Thanks for setting me straight. So it's 8k/60 that's need for the dual fish eye lens, which needs external power. The DFEL was $700 off at $1299 USA a month ago.. It still wasn't enough for me to pull the trigger, having to invest in $4k body. There looks like some good/easier/cheaper 3D VR180 options on the way (CALF, Teche).
@@CVPTV yes sir definitely. Some of the Indians need cameras like eos r5c and c70 to up our game. But shooting 8k raw will run the cost way too high. And I personally don't like sony's images. Even on yt only danny gervitz have been able to justify its colors. So I am really hopping cannon to release cannon c50 or c70 m2 in the same budget. I am looking for a professional package to help me start my cinematography career and eos r5c just missed its mark because it can't shoot 4k raw. I know its not that hard because bm have been doing this p4k. I am about to buy c70 in few months if nothing comes up.
@@jijivishant The canon can shoot 6k raw if you tell it to use the super-35 crop. The intent of raw is to provide the un-processed information that the sensor provides the camera, so that you might have the flexibility to decide just how much sharpening or de-noising to apply.
I have done tests on RAW vs XFAVC… the gains in RAW are very minimal… ( be mindful of WhiteBalance). In fact, if you are trying to make content for Netflix or with that standards… RAW is not certified… only XFAVC is certified. Also RAW file sizes are crazy…

Magnetic NDs and polarizers have changed my life. I don't miss internal NDs anymore.
@@daniellove162 Magnetic definitely has advantages and I think it would be good enough for shooting documentary/ENG. But I want a camera that automatically retracts the ND and changes the settings when I switch between photo and video mode on the camera.
@@danivar86 What camera with internal NDs takes great photos? I don’t know of any above 4K.
A7S III best
i have a question if you may help me... would you recommend it over sony a7s3 ??
What teleprompter is that? 0:12 do you have a link by any change? 🙏🏽
Just wish it had a bigger battery
What is taking Canon so long to put this 8K sensor into the C500 or C300?
Hey Jake, what camera was used for your talking head shots in this video? They look awesome
We use the R5 C for our main piece to camera set up and the RED KOMODO as our studio Broll camera. Thanks for watching, Jake
I like the one shot of the fx3😂
It’s coz we used the R5 C to film the bts for our previous FX3 video :) Jake
@@CVPTV begs the question which camera do you prefer?
@cvptv replaced two of their C200 with R5C. Anything you need for your answer?
What are the chances of an X-S20 review?
Many many thanks.. g
Which teleprompter is that that you use?
Thank you for this great overview. Do you think the R5C is still worth it in 2023 or should I wait for the R5ii if I am a video-centric shooter?
In my opinion, the R52 will be more photocentric.. may be more pixels in resolution, but already shoots 8K 30 as it is... probably it will push 8K60? 🤔 hard to say... Who knows may be they will add 6K...? but then.. if they do.. what will the R1 have....? :).
@@wildpatagoniafilms16 I agree. So would you go for the R5C now? I own an C70 and a R6ii - but still am seduced to get the R5C...
1080 - 240p would be a cool update .. 😬😬😎😎🤿🤿
Can you use the screen to touch focus with a ninja v connected for video and photo ?
I don’t wanna sold my house to buy this camera
Hey can you help me? When I make a video, I am having trouble to open it on my computer. I don’t know what cause that. The pc opens my old video from r5c.
Just released? I don’t even see the firmware on the site yet
Canon have confirmed it will be going live again on the 30th June!!
Meanwhile we are still waiting for a update on the Sony A1 who have given us nothing
Is there any community hacking cameras like the c100 etc . ?
Right now R5C marked down to $3999. Lowest price since release…
Do you really need to put the lens cap on when switching from video to photo? I have heard mixed things.
lol no
Great video! I’m curious for a retailer like you who could probably use anything, what stops you from going with an A1 or A74 for your BTS because of those power issues? Is there’s something you really prefer about the R5C?
Canon OS, Full Frame, and the image is lovely.
4K 60 fps no crop. Big for me. Colors are excellent. I want natural and close to that straight out of camera. Pair with canon 14mm zoom is only someone canon is offering.
Probably lenses. Rf mount is pretty convenient if you use cinema cameras
@@shotbro8521e-mount is even better as it has more native lenses as well then..
They use Komodo as an A cam so I think it just has to do with them both being RF mount and cut together decently well.
0:12 Does lens-mounted teleprompter put strain on the lens and risk damaging its focus motor?
No not really. It's incredibly light. Jake
Friends, which camera has the best autofocus performance in video mode?
Any recent Sony, and it's still not even close.
Thanks for this! What’s the difference between using XF-AVC on Super35 mode vs. new the 1.5x tele? Is there any supersampling on the tele modes?
Please someone answer this question… how Teleconverter different from crop modes.
@@udy0243 Teleconverter is digital zoom (software) Super35 is dif area of the sensor (hardware).
Is it just me, or at around 2:51, when demoing the newer Select AF, it lost focus when the subject moved away from the camera?
Yes it is, its typical canon af behavior when recording video. It gives slight initial tracking delay when subject are accelarating /decelerating. Sony stick to subject no matter what. While canon deliberately delay the af actuation to mimic 'focus pulling' .
I felt Autofocus didn’t improve much ( in fact i felt it got worsen)… need to test more to come to a conclusion though.
Is the camera better than the FX3? I prefer the Canon image but it seems big and bulky compared to the FX3 and I don’t own any RF/ EF lenses. Do you guys think it is worth investing in for narrative filmmaking?
It might be if you want to film for Netflix ......
narrative in what sense? most people rent gear.
If you own emount glass already stick with FX3, canon glass then go with this 🤷
Proper cine glass might be a better investment but if you live in Los Angeles or any other major city then you could rent an Arri Alexa for like $100 a day sometimes
Video Quality are the similar, one specialty is low light whilst the other has a high megapixel still mode
@@burnerr good point.
Wide DR requires adjustments in post, so why not use Clog instead?
file size
@@melih.a is clog only available in raw?
Shooting in WideDR could help with post-production speed.
@@aregal I don't understand the reason. Applying a LUT or transforming it to the correct color space only takes a click. How is it saving speed?
Still no horizon level display while recording though, right?
R5C has horizontal and vertical level displays that stay on while recording.
@@csound55 whoa! I didn't think any canons did! And not guidelines, but the actual level that moves to show you how level the shot is?
@@brettrohlfingvideo Yes the levels move in real time - I think all the cinema line canons all have it.
Will it do 4k/60 without external power yet?
It was 8K 60 that it requires external power for, technically it can do it off of internal batteries but you lose functions. Jake
nope
@@z352kdaf8324 nope what? It can do 4K 60 without external power.
Really like my R5C, but I can't decide on the best ND or Vari ND setup. What do you guys use and find best for ND and CP on your R5C's?
0:44 man wtf does it mean 06:02 seconds, it looks like 6 minutes
No full size HDMI, no sale (to me).
Still no open gate 😢
Yes, please give us Opengate.
no 4k raw, c70 it is then
Would you use a cropped 4K RAW mode on the R5C? Jake
Also RAW file sizes are crazy…
but why does the footage on my 10 yr old BMPCC og look better then this canon?
all this camera technology and so much garbage being broadcast.
