Bette Davis' daughter B.D. Hyman on The Joan Rivers Show (1991)

  • In September 1991, B.D. Hyman, appeared 'The Joan Rivers Show', during which she repeated her familiar litany of horror stories about her mother, film icon Bette Davis. This time, however, there was a twist: Bette's fifteen-year-old grandson, Justin, who was six when he last saw her, came on the show and offered support for his mother's stories. He told his own harrowing tale of being threatned by Bette with a fireplace poker (An event that was not mentioned in either of B.D.'s books.)

Mia Farrow spent a lot of time as a child with BD and Bette. She says its all lies about Bette. BD turned on her mother after marrying her husband who Bette disliked and found controlling. This lady has a very odd website too.

As far as I can tell, B.D. has actually been quite consistent in retelling her version of events. She actually has mentioned the issues with her children and the fact that her mother wanted her to break up her family to go home to Bette. B.D. was selling a book, so I don't doubt that she exaggerated some details to capture her audiences, but I happen to believe the vast majority of what she's said over the years.

But during her initially interviews she didn't say she wrote the book to get Better out of her life she claimed she wrote the book to help repair the relationship with her Mom it's only once she durd she suddenly admitted it was to rid Better if her life so she djd lie probably because she received a lot of backlash for releasing the book whilst her Mother was recovering from a stroke which even you've got to admit is rather cruel @@texan903

We're u there? This is her story to tell. Why is it hard to believe Betty Davis was an egotistical tyrant? She was, and this has been said by other sources other than her daughter. What would be the reason for her to hate her own mother so deeply if she gave her such a great life. She would have gotten more money from her mother's will then she would have gotten from the sell of her book. Your love for someone shouldn't allow it to cloud your judgement.

It’s hard to know what to believe but this was cruel and spiteful. My mother was very much like her mother in many ways but there were significant differences too. I still would have never ever ever done this to my mother. My mother passed 5 years ago and I’m still trying to deal with and face the neglect and the abuses I went through but I just couldn’t imagine doing this to my mother. When she gets the floor she really starts to unload and you can see the rage toward her mother. She’s a loose canon. I don’t think this is a good thing for children to watch. As the son is telling his story the pride on her face is unmistakable and she laughed with glee. Why would her son recounting a horrible incident with her mother evoke laughter in her? She’s really enjoying the spotlight. She did the full circuit and didn’t miss one opportunity to promote her book .

Bette was patrician and could seem distant, but that was her New England Yankee way. But she also showed what a great sense of humor she had in various interviews and, along with so many others in Hollywood, criticized people like Joan Crawford AND Bing Crosby for their brutal parenting methods. B.D. Hyman has no business comparing herself to Christina Crawford who could never do anything right in Joan's eyes. My God, Bette even got B.D. a part in "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" despite the fact that she could never act her way out of a paper bag. A totally ungrateful woman.

I’m not saying there’s no credibility to B.D’s story. Bette Davis was a friggin dynamo of a human being. She was supremely self-assured and any demons she may have had were concealed by a veil of indestructible determination, will and ego. And with that a brilliant actress-probably one of 10 of the truly great actresses of the 20th century. But I DO believe, like most highly successful and highly neurotic professional people, she probably had control freak tendencies and a sense that everyone around her were the supporting cast. I have no doubt she expressed the maternal instinct in a more aggressive fashion and this probably led B.D to become quite bitter. A child will always rebel when they want something that the parent keeps resisting from occurring and I’m sure B.D. felt like second fiddle. I’m also almost positive Bette said and did some things to her daughter that some children would easily grow to resent given that “control” factor. That said, I think writing a book about these issues was wrong. It could’ve been handled in a doctor’s office. Not a mass printing to air your dirty laundry. I don’t believe Bette abused her daughter and I think it was cruel to publish this

Why do people find it so hard to believe that a person can be a controlling narcissist and still good at their job i. e. a good actress. If anybody has read any material about Bette, it is no secret that Bette Davis was very difficult professionally and probably carried the same attitude at home with her child.

My dislike is not for this channel. I It is for Better Davis' despicable daughter who published a hate filled derogatory book filled with lies about her mom to make money. She even admitted in an interview it was a business move. I have an abusive alcoholic mom and would give anything for a mom like Bette who supported her daughter financially her whole life and never said a bad word about her even when the book came out. The book was released when Bette was dying from cancer. It was a betrayal that deeply hurt Bette in her hardest, loneliest days.

The son here is clearly gay, poor kid, because part of this woman’s crusade is against gay men. I can only imagine how horrible his childhood was with this as his mother. Maybe he should write a book about his mother.

It’s hard to know what to believe but this was cruel and spiteful. My mother was very much like her mother but there were differences. I still would have never ever ever done this to my mother. My mother passed 5 years ago and I’m still trying to deal with and face the neglect and the abuses I went through but I just couldn’t imagine doing this to my mother. When she gets the floor she really starts to unload and you can hear the rage toward her mother. She’s a loose canon. I don’t think this is good thing for children to watch. As the son is telling his story the pride on her face is unmistakable and she laughed with glee. Why does this evoke laughter in her? She’s really enjoying the spotlight. She did the full circuit and didn’t miss one opportunity to promote it.

Joan was much too polite to this woman, Ms. B.D. Hymen. She attempted to ruin the name of her own mother and make a cash profit like Cristina Crawford had done before her. Guess what? Ms. Hymen failed and her "biography" dismissed. Ms. Hymen also failed at one of the oldest and valued of the original biblical tenets..."Honor thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." B.D. Hymen will only be known to history as an asterisk or a footnote referencing her lies, false statements, ill-will, and proudly willful perjuries within her own stated highest court of law, the biblical Christian faith.

All really good actresses are fuckups privately. If you know anything about Bette its that she was more then difficult woman. Extreme ego and self centered. So for her daughter growing up must have been really hard with a mother like that even with all the money involved. But other side of the coin is that she herself wasn't an angel. So when can you stop blaming parents for your own character problems is the real question. Her mother was an extraordinary woman in her work but as a person...who knows why she had so much issues. It doesn't seem like she herself was abused growing up. Maybe it was genetic, in borne neurosis and anger management issues that were not treated as a problem back then.
