Joan knew about MD but mentioned it in a interview by Bob Thomas. Conversations with Joan Crawford. She said she disciplined her children to show that life is about being on your own. And to prepare then for adulthood.

No proof that Joan knew about MD or that Christina was even writing at that point. I believe it comes from Charlotte Chandler's hook Not the Girl Next Door.

Re: B.D Hyman's comment at around 11.55, "I wrote the book to get my mother out of my life & away from my children" ... Come on what BS.!! She wrote the book to hurt her mother. B.D Hyman could have done what other daughters do (ie, not visit, don't call, etc). She wanted to take advantage of her mother's stardom & make money & hurt her in the process, which she did. Bette Davis had a stroke not long after the book was published.

From my understanding, Bette had a massive stroke and it didn't look like she would live, so BD pursued the book. Bette lived and that is where it got ugly.

Ahh B.D. Hyman (she's a manic one isn't she?) -- is it just me or does she seem extremely well-rehearsed in what she's saying here. Interesting when Joan Rivers asks Justin if he can remember his grandmother and she answers for him with, ''Oh yes he does -- vividly''. He then replies with, ''vividly'' to Rivers - then recounts all the horrors (that his mother may have imprinted on his 'memory' perhaps?) like he's reading off a prepared script -- then latches on to JR's comments as if they were his own. That poker story sounds a little contrived doesn't it (he certainly doesn't seem to have been affected by it -- mother and son find it funny). Strange that wasn't mentioned in either of Hymans' books (and doesn't appear to have been spoken of since). The first volume, we were told at first was, ''To get through to mother'', now it was so she'd go away. Wonder what the purpose of the sequel was -- Christian charity? No mention of Bette's satanic figure either (Christian B.D. later said she and Justin watched her transform into one - and then went to bed - the last time she wanted her family near Bette) Like I always suspected, she seems quite bitter that she wasn't in Miss Davis' will, and neither were her grandchildren (can't blame Bette at all -- and B.D. - if you wanted her to go away - you can't expect her cash darling). If only Bette had died when her daughter expected her to, there would have been none of this. Here, B.D. just comes across as a spoilt, immature little brat -- like her son. Still no mention here that Hyman's husband owed local people a lot of money and had to flee their home to the Bahamas as they couldn't pay people back (and never did). Still, the audience seemed to believe her -- her last five minutes of TV fame -- why not bring her son along I guess. Her inspiration was Christina, wonder if she gave B.D. some tips on how to continue to make money off the back of her dead mother after this show?

Very disappointing that Joan Rivers had Christina and BD on this show. She later made fun of both and said she hated their kind of book. She threw BDs book into a garbage can on UK TV, and when Reagan's daughter brought out her misery memoir, Joan likewise trashed it and said she could not stand privileged children of famous parents writing such rubbish. Christina and BD have changed and elaborated their stories so many times over the years - according to a much later revelation of Christina's, Joan Crawford actually murdered her husband Alfred Steele (l guess that had slipped her mind when she wrote the original book!) whilst BD says Bette Davis was a witch - literally! Untalented, unattractive daughters of famous, hugely talented mothers must have a lot to cope with, but cashing in by ruining the reputations of their parent is a disgusting thing to do.

In CHRISTINA CRAWFORD'S memoir "Mommie Dearest" she wrote of an incident whereby she ALLEGES Joan Crawford strangled her after she returned home from boarding school for summer vacation in June 1953. When Christina wrote of this allegation, she stated Joan had "a look in her eyes that will never be erased from my memory." After this ALLEGED altercation, Christina was sent immediately back to boarding school.
Christina published "Mommie Dearest" in October 1978. Nearly simultaneously to her writing this FRAUDULENT memoir, Christina was court ordered to be questioned in an UNDER-OATH deposition by Joan Crawford's estate in February 1978.
During her UNDER-OATH, court-ordered deposition, Christina is specifically questioned about this incident, to which she responded:
"I don't know what you are referring to," and continues to evade the questions regarding this incident.
In addition to Christina's complete, on the record, CONTRIDICTION of this event, the EYE-WITNESS to this event came forward in 1981 to confirm Christina LIED in her book.

When your body is injured, say by a cut, God gave the body the ability to form a scab "cover" over the wound until the body can knit itself back whole again. It's called target-child selection or the Cinderella phenomenon when one or more children are abused and others are not. Some do not even witness the abuse of their siblings or are traumatized in other ways and don't remember it.
Joan Crawford's younger children were brought up during a, for lack of better words, better time in her life. She was working away from home more, not drinking as much... But none of that really matters. It always seems to be valuable to the public that Joan's youngest say nothing happened. It's not valuable evidence to me and it shouldn't be to anyone who understands how child abuse works.

    • @raea3588
      @raea3588 Рік тому +2

@Jamie Miller Many of the commenters say a lot of things that aren't backed up by facts. Joan didn't want a lot of people around her children. But what you're referring to took place when Christina was grown and wasn't even present. Joan and BD met on the set of a movie.
Joan didn't say BD was a horrible influence on her children. She said that BD seemed to be a woman of the world and compared to Joan's going on 13 year old twins who were sitting in Joan's dressing room in matching overalls and lace blouses knitting, I'm sure BD did seem like that. She was almost 17! Joan did ask that BD not influence her twins but she had no reason to socialize with them given the difference in their ages. This was before BD even began having troubles in her relationship with her own mother.
Christina has never said that she lied. Ever. You can find many autobiographies from actresses of Joan Crawford's time who give first hand witnesses accounts that of the abuse Joan inflicted upon Christina and Christopher along with many recorded and filmed right here on UA-cam.
You know, fans love to dispute all of this because Bette Davis and Joan were gorgeous celebrities with money who put on a good show. Fine. They were wonderful movie stars. No one has to hate their movies.
But we can't judge what went on behind closed doors because we don't like the sound of it.
BD always said that she did have a wonderful childhood and her story shouldn't be compared to Christina's. The real turmoil in her relationship with her mother started in young adulthood.
And Christina had every right to tell her truth and be believed. And if her mother wasn't Joan Crawford. People would.

Bette Davis also had an awful daughther. Joan cut Christina and terrible son out of her will. Now her other good children disagree with Christina's lies. . .

Because I really like Bette Davis, most people assume I must like all actresses of the same era, but I don't really. I have seen little of Joan's movies (I have 'Baby Jane' of course) but loved her in 'Possessed' (it was a great film and she was wonderful in it). I know very little of her besides that. To me, it's blatantly obvious that B.D. Hyman lied (I have done extensive research) and used Christina's book as inspiration for her own. However, I just want to say I enjoyed reading your well-informed posts on your FB page, very interesting and opened my eyes a lot. Congratulations on your work. I think this chat show was awful, none of these stars were there to defend themselves and Joan Rivers appeared to believe every word that make out of their mouths (although I'd be very surprised if she actually fell for that Justin and the poker crap), she should have sat on the fence more and asked better questions. Anyway, if Christina did lie (and I have read many things on your page to seriously suggest she did), good for you for exposing it. Joan wasn't there to defend herself, it wasn't fair.

Sorry, but I don’t believe all sh.y the two daughters wrote. To get their books published, they was ask to add more drama to it. If someone really followed the story of Joan , she was bankrupt, no new rolls, the only valuable was her house and that was not glamorous. Her daughter was upset not to inherit something. I also a lot of interviews, even short before Bette Davis dead, she always said she loved her children, I think she tried to be a good mother, but she worked till her sad end , from cancer in a hospital in france, one day after she was honored in Spain. They both was legends, why destroy what they worked so hard for, just for money with the book sells. The daughter from Bette Davis said, she wanted to see the family, why not go. We all had some stones in our childhood.

In Christina's "Mommie Dearest" she wrote of an incident whereby she ALLEGES Joan Crawford strangled her after she returned home from boarding school for summer vacation in June 1953.

Billie Greene -Former secretary to Joan Crawford-unpublished interview 1980
“I believe I am quoted [in Christina’s book regarding the LIE that is the strangling incident] to have said something like, “Stop, you’ll kill her.” There was a point where they were having an argument. What precipitated it was possibly one of many misunderstandings. Or where Christina had lied to Joan, and the hostility was getting greater. Joan came towards her and gave her a good swat, and hit her towards the neck area. I remember at one point taking Joan’s arm when it was in midair and saying, “I want you to stop. You’re going to hurt her.” This was not for Christina’s sake. This was for Joan’s sake. No one wants to see anyone out of control. I can tell you that I’d never seen any discipline towards Christina or towards the other children that I would call out of control. There was not brutality that night. Possibly there was rage. I can’t conceive of the distortion, unless Christina had a deep-seated plan, a vendetta that was present even when she was 14. Christina lied often for absolutely no reason. [The book] was a pack of lies that made your hair stand on end. I have utter contempt for Christina."
"When Christina was at Chadwicks, she would tell some lies. Like the lengths Joan would go through to see that she had everything to get back to school. Shoes, dresses, etc. I don’t know what Christina would do with them between Brentwood and school, but she would arrive with a couple of beat up, old dresses and the call would come from Chadwicks. “Couldn’t you send this girl one decent thing to wear?” I got Christina in my office one day and said, “Christina, what did you do? All those things we picked out and packed and got ready for you that you chose?” She said, “I gave them to my friends,” and I said, “What does this do? Make you a hero with your friends?” and she said, “No, I just wanted to.” I said, “Don’t you know what you do to your mother when you make her look cruel and evil and selfish?” and she said, “No, it’s just something I like to do. I like to give my clothes away.” On more than one occasion I found Christina to be an opportunist, dishonest and distorting everything, every single actions of her mother.”

May 17th, 1977: Joan Crawford's Last Will & Testament is read. Christina and Christopher Crawford discover they are disinherited.
June/July 1977: According to Christina, she begins writing "Mommie Dearest" as a personal journal, which consists of 20 pages.
August 1977: According to Christina, she gives her 20-page "Mommie Dearest" journal to a friend, who then gives it to their literary agent to read. The literary agent contacts Christina expressing interest in publishing the journal as a memoir, and asks Christina to complete 100 pages by the first week in September.
September 1977: According to Christina, she completes the first draft of "Mommie Dearest" and mails the manuscript to her literary agent in Manhattan, New York.
October 1977: According to Christina, she is contacted via telephone by her literary agent in Manhattan, New York with an offer from William Morrow & Co. for "a lot of money" to publish her manuscript of "Mommie Dearest."
October 24th, 1977 (#1): According to Christina, she has a two-hour meeting with her literary agent, a book editor and the president of William Morrow in the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, New York. The meeting is regarding the sale of her "Mommie Dearest" manuscript. According to Christina, she was told the manuscript needed "work," and that she was receptive to "revisions" and "changes." A deadline of April 25th, 1978 is scheduled for Christina's completed manuscript with revisions.
According to Christina, after leaving the meeting regarding the revisions and changes to the "Mommie Dearest" manuscript at the Plaza Hotel, she travels to her attorney's office, where she reads and signs her legal Objection To Probate Joan's will. After signing the legal documents, Christina claims she left the attorney's office and was suddenly "overtaken by a sensation of panic" after she boarded a bus. Then, after getting off the bus prematurely, she was "feeling like a crazy person."

However, Christopher Crawford does not appear at the scheduled time. Nor do his attorneys. No prior notice was given that Christopher would not attend the deposition. May 1978: It is reported in the news that Christina will received $750,000 for the paperback rights to "Mommie Dearest," and $300,000 for the film rights. In addition, Christina is to receive $250,000 for writing the film's screenplay.
May-June 1978: Christina and Christopher Crawford's attorney propose settlement options to the Joan Crawford estate in regard to their October 24th, 1977 Objections To Probate the will of Joan Crawford.
May 18th, 1978: Christina and Christopher Crawford attempt to alter their original Objections To Probate the will of Joan Crawford. Through their attorney, Christina and Christopher claim that Joan Crawford suffered from monomania, which preceded her prior wills dating back to 1964 that excluded them as beneficiaries. The original Objections To Probate contended Joan was not of sound mind and was influenced by undue influence by Jerome and Cathy LaLonde when she signed her final will dated October 28th, 1976.
July 1978: According to Christina, Paramount Pictures threatens to sue her for breach of contract regarding the film rights to "Mommie Dearest."

Later, Christina's attorney states Christina's sudden illness was "chest pains." When Joan's estate attorney asks if Christina would be attending the deposition on September 1st, Christina's attorney states that she would not be attending the deposition. Shortly thereafter, Christina boards an airplane, and flies from Manhattan, New York to Los Angeles, California.

It's awful that you had an abusive mother. However, working in the TV and film industry l have seen the other side of this situation. Two of my long term clients were glamorous, highly talented and successful actresses. Sadly both have now passed away. Both had daughters who were less attractive and less talented, but who wanted to get into the business. Their mothers did everything possible to try to help them, but no amount of help can get an untalented actress a job. I watched these girls grow from children into adults who resented the success and popularity of their mothers. I saw at first hand the despicable way they treated the women who had raised them and loved them and been fantastic parents. Both girls literally broke their mothers' hearts. When hearing her mother had been diagnosed with cancer, one girl sent an email saying "I'm glad you have cancer and l hope you die". Not all children love their parents. Luckily l have never suffered child abuse but l have witnessed with my own eyes appalling parent abuse, and l know it contributed to the early deaths of two ladies whose daughters had turned on them for no reason and broken their hearts. Christina has constantly changed her stories and always made them worse and worse. If you are interested in hearing the other side of the story there is a long video by The Concluding Chapter of Crawford in which dozens of people who knew Joan and her children refute Christina's stories - among them Joan's twin girls who successfully sued Christina over lies she told about them.
