I recorded this sketch on video back when it aired, and watched it countless times. Laughed out loud [really] each time.
Laughed as loudly and as much just now. Tx to whoever posted this.
I worked with someone who was friends with Ms. Davis in her final years. Sometimes he would play her messages on speakerphone for us, his work friends to hear. No big reveals, but I got the sense of a genuine and caring person who very much had a sense of humor and humility. Just to weigh in lightly on that sidebar.
Jan Hooks, Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman were all brilliant in this sketch And this sketch very much found its audience, one friend popping it in the VCR for another; and on the big screen at gay video bars like Midnight Sun in San Francisco, and Revolver in LA.
Fun memories on several levels, thank you.

Betty Davis' daughter got what she deserved. She wrote a nasty, vicious book about her very sick mother that came across as a money grab. The book wasn't convincing, it was all she said, I said. I think she saw the success of 'Mommy Dearest' and saw a chance to get some cash. I remember one of the accusations she made. Apparently Davis tried to pass off frozen mac and cheese as her own. Oh, my heavens, call children's' protective services.

This is clearly SOOOO beyond the audience - the performance, the nuance, the references, the cadence. It would kill at a gay club, but for generic SNL, you can see how flat it fell. A waste, but thank God for youtube!

My brother and I, in our early teens, at the time, were vaguely familiar with Bette Davis when she died. This was mostly through her memorable appearances on Johnny Carson than one of her movies. Jan Hooks just nails the old Bette Davis we saw on TV completely. It was a very funny and memorable sketch for us. So glad to see it after thirty years.

Jan Hooks was such an amazing talent. She was so funny in everything she chose to do. Her impersonation of Tammy Faye Bakker was hilarious without being mean spirited. I had forgotten this Bette Davis skit, but it is spot on. I also don't believe she got the credit she deserved for her work on Designing Women. I miss her terribly...

He sucked. Seriously. Just awful clothes. And that one self-promotion photo he did of him trying to look like a black and white film star from Bette Davis’ era is just repulsive.
I know Bette was into giving to charities, so I’m sure she wore his hideous clothes as a form of charity to talentless AAs like him.

Oh, I forgot to add, thank god he died at 35. That hack had tarnished the world too much as it was. It’s obvious why he was given any attention at all when he was making such horrible “creations” that all looked like kindergarten craft projects. So it’s very satisfying to know that reason is what resulted in his early death. It’s a shame medicine is advanced enough to prevent such deaths, because it was doing a great job there for awhile with cleaning up society.
