What blows my mind just watching this interview... the stars from long ago seem to be way more humble, relatable, and authentic compared to Hollywood today.
Ben: Good point. Hallmarks of prior generations were humility and modesty. Most of the true Golden Age stars didn't come from a pampered upbringing - they are endured and I think were appreciative of any good breaks that came their way: Bette, Joan Crawford, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, etc.
@@AstralPixie I think it speaks volumes she wanted to raise her kids in the same modest environment she was raised in. You can tell she really appreciated hard work and putting in the effort for her kids to have a normal and rather strict upbringing. Bette was a great actress , though not the greatest , if you compare her body of work to Katharine Hepburn's, you can see the difference ! It's very clear that Hepburn was much more versatile, she also could and did play the classics. Thank you
I think Bette respected Mike's toughness and that he didn't defer to her as most people, men and women, did and she generously and honestly answered every one of his questions. This is one of the most honest of her interviews that I've seen. She doesn't pull any punches nor sugar coat the facts of her life and her attitudes. Also, she reveals her softness and vulnerability along with her toughness here which makes her very relatable and even endearing. Great job!

Bette was so very right about parents not being parents, parents who want to be best friends with their children, bid mistake! I miss Bette so very much, RIP
Correction, she never said that? She referenced tremendous blame upon her mother for her strict values placed upon her daughter relative to marriage & sex in tandem. If Bette had her choice it would've been to live together as the younger generation did hence she'd never married 3/4 of her husbands.
Just found The Dick Cavett Show interviews after watching Susan Sarandon portray ger in fictionalized Feud: Bette and Joan. I loved her roles before that very much. Wish more could have been offered to her in her 70's! Our loss, but tells the time of mysogyny.
I remember as a child being fixated when a Bette Davis film was on television. She was no great beauty but she had an undeniable screen presence that has never been matched. You simply could not take your eyes off her. Had Joan Crawford not been so jealous Bette would have won the Oscar for Baby Jane. She deserved it.
Unfortunately Bette words might have revealed what happened. Possibly she gave BD everything and BD became spoiled rotten. One word describes BD...UNGRATEFUL!
Sad that her daughter slandered her name so badly. No parent child relationship is perfect but she loved her children. BD is literally off her rocker, she saw the attention mommy dearest got and wanted some of that publicity for herself. Bette was a legend.
I agree. If it was so horrid then why be in her life until almost the end? Every kid I knew who’s parent was as horrid as she claimed her mother was left home as soon as they could. Her daughter was married at 16- how much of that ranch did Bette pay for?
BD and her husband got involved with that televangelist charlatan Pat Robertson. After defrauding the couple of much money, he decided BD should publish a book delineating all of her mother's alleged faults and sins. It was a piece of trash--a five-minute-to-read scandal sheet on a par with The Globe or the Enquirer. Who knew Jesus was so very money hungry?
I had the opposite reaction when I found out she wanted her daughter to abort her baby because it was a son and not a daughter and she practices witchcraft. Disgusting old hag.
I love the old Hollywood actors of the past. Their personal lives weren't spewing 24/7 on Social Media distracting from their actual talent. Actors/studios controlled public perception and protected their brand. Made it more exciting to go to the movies to see the Stars.
Not the same song, but in accord is Mary Chapin Carpenter's "The Hard Way" in a rousing performance of women at a music awards show. Wonder if that songwriter had known the Bette Davis chosen epitaph!?

Of course she (Barbara) would speak highly of Bette; either she appears on the program, meaning she speaks well of her mother or not appear at all and offend Bette. I am certain that Barbara's back was against the wall.
B.D. Is a bit...odd. Great actress she had guts they don't make actresses like her these days . She was my all time favourite actress Spencer Tracy being my favourite actor ❤
I wish I were born in the 30's & 40's when the world was a very different place, there's nothing like old Hollywood , today's Hollywood can't even compare with the old Bette Davis and Joan Crawford days..
Nobody will ever have the charisma Bette davis had in both her films & her interviews. Nobody else matters when she is on screen. Even Crawford had to take a back seat. Its funny people talk about females not being equal but back in the early days of cinema they were the big stars of film. Gloria swanson, Mary pickford, Mae west, Bette davies, shirley temple etc. They carried films.
I love both so, so much. Crawford blew me away in A Woman’s Face. I remember sitting up startled and thinking SHE CAN ACT!! Lol. She is not given enough credit for her talent. Comparing apples and oranges really. So many prefer one or the other. If I had to choose, HAD to then to Bette, maybe because she was fearless. The Little Foxes was such a brave, unforgiving performance. Such a morality tale for me. I felt for her because her character could not feel for herself. On the other hand I sure share the camera’s love of Jones face. What a face!!!
@@en6278 The only one who was 'trounced' was Davis (and her fragile ego) at the Oscars that season, a reality check delivered expertly by Crawford to Bette's eternal dismay. But getting back to the film for a moment, it was Crawford who masterminded the entire project, initially finding the book property the film was based on and choosing Davis to costar in the garish title role. Naturally, Crawford's intuition paid off. She knew the public would buy the notion of Davis looking hideous and lurid and that Davis' campy flair for overacting would suit the character of Baby Jane to a t. As for Crawford, she had quite astutely already cast herself from the start in the muted eye-of-the-storm role of Blanche and simply let Davis chew the scenery with shameless abandon like a hungry banshee. Davis' ego did the rest as Davis consequently proceeded to buy into her own hype and set herself up for the biggest Oscar fail of her career. Karma can indeed be a b*tch when she's determined to teach someone a much-needed lesson in humility.
@@valsainking It might have been a matter of ego, and Crawford was a great diva and a good actress, yet Davis was of another league, in terms of range and acting skills, she truly was phenomenal.
"Parents n children"....can either be a fairytale or nightmare.....No such thing as a perfect parent...ya make it up as you go along drawing on life experience & prayer.....I have a great/solid relationship with all my children today.....god knows it was one hell of a rollercoaster ride....U cry, U worry, U pray.....but I wld not change a thing...The never-ending saga of parenthood has been the greatest joy!!
I read the book, and relate to how she felt. Unfortunately, their relationship became strained over the following years, then estranged. Odd and sad how that plays out in many families. BD should have waited unti her mother's passing to write the book.

Bette Davis is my favorite actress she had stage presence and she was flawless up on the movie screen🎉🎉 Bette Davis had those eyes that held you captivated and it made you know who she is🎉🎉Bette Davis had so many acting roles ,because she could play any type of role that they threw at her. That's old Hollywood and she will be reminded long after she's gone 🎉🎉
that song at the end...this woman is the greatest of all time. what an amazing human being. shes a boss. she and Crawford, Garbo and Stanwyck changed the world.
Her performance is ‘All About Eve’ is amongst the best I’ve ever seen. I became an instant fan when I first saw it two decades ago.
I watch her movies over and over again. The Heiress, amazing movie.
Back in the 80s, Bette and Richard Pryor did the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, and she was so... 'charming!'
This was a nice interview 💞
I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bette Davis was and still is brilliant
This is a great post Thank You! Long Live the one and only Bette Davis.......
I used that statement on my 2 husbands “I’d like to kiss you but I just washed my hair” . : )
Thank you for posting this! I haven't seen it since it first aired.
Love her to pieces ❤
Best actress ever. I love her honesty.
I adore your channel! Thank you.
Thanks for posting. Amazing.
What a woman!!! Amazing artist and human
Bettie and had the prettiest eyes I've ever seen,no wonder their was a song named after her Bettie Davis eyes Love that woman
Crawford takes a back seat to no one.
@@georgegallucci1845 well she certainly did in baby jane. she had the boring role. And Bette trounced her & got the oscar nod.
Bede reveals just how much she "changed her mind" about her mother for that vile book she published just as Bette was at her most vulnerable.
Ms. Davis will always be remembered as one of the great actresses of the 20th century. BD will be remembered as a wacko.
I read the book, and relate to how she felt. Unfortunately, their relationship became strained over the following years, then estranged. Odd and sad how that plays out in many families. BD should have waited unti her mother's passing to write the book.
both her & christina are greedy backstabbing brats. Id be horrified to know I raised kids like that who would throw you under the bus for a paycheck.
What a rotten daughter Davis had; like many parents do. So glad I never had kids.
I can see why they say “Bette Davis eyes”. Just beautiful. She was a wonderful human being. ❤
I love you Bette Davis.
If it weren’t for her stroke, I have ZERO doubt in my mind Bette would’ve gotten another Oscar nomination and would’ve won. Not a doubt in my mind.
True film star ❤️
