    I really like that you did this all using one simple camera and no accessories. This helps to illustrate the point that achieving good footage has more to do with composition (visual choices) and concept (what you are trying to SAY with your video). It’s not about equipment; it’s what you DO with the equipment, however simple it might be. Good job!

    I guess the takeaway is this for a lot of beginners: If you see cool things, go for it, go close, go around, frame it up, down, reversed, add movement, whatever. If you're not stimulated by the environment, GET STIMULATED. Pay attention! Even if an environment might seem bare at first, analyze it, film ALL OF IT. Wide, close up, tilt it, add movement. Just don't sit there and pan and think that's enough or you're not interested. Pay attention to your composition, make sure a frame is pretty and shoot. If it just looks ok, don't even be happy with it.

  • @LillySchwartz
    @LillySchwartz 4 роки тому +3

    Agreed on so many levels, very good demonstration! I have one thing to add though: What people should avoid isn’t pans, but aimless pans. Pans are used a lot in B-roll of more old school documentary stuff and if you combine slow pans with static tripod stuff, you have a completely different style that also works. It’s not what’s currently popular on UA-cam, but it does work in specific contexts.

    Sean I have to say, THHHAT was amazing bro !!! Very simple, but at the same time a few simple tips can TOTALLLLLY transform someones otherwise dull vacay video into something like it was out of a movie, like you said.
    I'm pretty creative, I did do a photography course in college, so I have a firm knowledge of exposure, framing etc. But I never tire of learning different ways of showing and shooting people and objects. I ACTUALLY do your palm tree style of shooting man WOOHOO !!
    One other thing most beginners do, and always get hung up on, is shen they shoot, they want to start and end the vid clip as if it's the finished product [ie no editing/cutting/splicing. Whereas, in many cases, that's the key to MAKING it look and have that "pro" feel.
    Loved this video and look forward to seeing more bro, CHEERS !!

      by "cinematic bars" do you mean black bars at the top and bottom?
      You'll be better off by cropping a slice of footage from top and bottom to get a more wide-screen aspect ratio (instead of adding black bars).

      @@paulskalnenieks920 yes that is what i mean with cinematic bars. Altho i think its style preference to put those bars or slice top&bottom.
      But at least that is important to have in b-rol; he could refer to it in his video.

    If you want to talk about doing things like a pro... "in and out" is called dollying. "sliding" is called trucking.

    The difference is in the definition itself. Also I think the term "Cinematic" has been raped to points where it seems rather just cheesy than what its intended for.
