- In part 2 of my exclusive interview with Steve Howe we discuss the Masterworks tour, playing "Gates Of Delirium" again live, songwriting and why he considers himself to be a "musical squirrel".
As mentioned in this video, some out there prefer I stop yapping and get right to Steve. So, especially for you, below are timestamps that will advance your directly to Steve's portions of the video. Merry Christmas!
6:59 - "What is it like going on tour and not performing anything you've written over the past 25 years?"
10:36 - On playing "Gates of Delirium" again for the first time in 25 years.
13:42 - Steve discusses fan polls and how they may "dictate" what the band actually plays.
15:57 - Steve talks about the possibility of performing material from "Drama" and reflects on the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe album.
18:51 - How Steve's Homebrew demos are turned into songs, particularly GTR's one and only hit single.
23:19 - Steve discusses rejoining Yes in 1995 and how multi-track demos positively impacted his ability to present musical ideas.
24:59 - Steve talks likelihood of a Homebrew 3.
26:30 - Steve discusses plans for his upcoming, first-ever, all-acoustic solo album.
28:55 - Steve gives insights into the special plans that Yes has "cooking in the oven" for 2001.

The Masterworks Tour with Igor was spectacular. They played the classics with youthful energy, they were indeed on the same page. Thanks for posting.
Lucky for me, I didn't have to wait the year it took to get part 2 posted. Wow, I would've been pissed to be told there's a part 2 & then Nothing for a year?! I would've thought the poster died. No, seems like forgot or something IDK.
With all my complaining done: Great Interview!
Thanks, I enjoy you sharing these!
Tony, Happy Holidays and thank you for this wonderful present. You are the best and I always enjoy your commentary on all the topics !!!!!!
Thanks so much David! I appreciate your support!
Thanks, man, great interviews. I grew up on Long Island near Jones Beach but never saw any bands there. I was too young when I moved. I did see Yes and Steve Howe over a dozen times whether in Yes, Asia or ABWH. My favorite "rock" guitarist. Merry Christmas. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Merry Christmas Bob! Thanks for watching and for the comment.
I saw The Masterworks tour in Grant Park in Chicago, 2000. It was a free show and had Kansas as the opening act....great gig! Later that year Howe played his solo tour at Park West in Chicago. My friends and I sat about 10 feet away from SH. My favorite SH album is Beginnings. Thanks for giving us more of your interview with SH. Merry Christmas!
Now that you mention it, Kanas were the opener that night and sounded great. Thanks for the comment and Merry Christmas!
To fair about you not knowing about Steve Howe until the 80's (Asia). I was born 1970 & became a YES fan in the later 80's early 90's - I was 19/20 yrs. old but I've been a fan ever since. For me I heard Asia & 90125 & some radio stuff (Roundabout etc.) but it all grabbed (& held on) a bit later.
Gotta love us passionate YES fans. I appreciate you setting the stage with your dialogue. It would've been difficult to contextualize what's going on without some background. Thanks for both videos!
Steve is one of the most unique guitarists in the rock genre and certainly an intriguing artist to learn about.
Thanks John, I appreciate the feedback!
Good informational commentary by the interviewer. A lot of the time it is just blather, not here.
Tony, miss your videos and commentary. Hoping you are ok :). David Carlin
Hey David, thanks so much for the kind words, I truly appreciate it! I miss everyone too and will be back real soon!
I knew that answer B) fan polls, and I remember those polls going around alt.music.yes on usenet. I believe Steve because the next year there was another poll asking if the band should tour with an orchestra. That poll was an overwhelming NO, which the band flatly ignored. 😂 Thanks for a great interview - Masterworks was the last time I saw the band live and it was a helluva show.
Thanks for the comment Joseph! Yeah, that was definitely my favorite Yes tour and show ever and, now that I think of it, one of the last times I got to see Jon with the band.
When are you coming back? It's been a long time since your last video. I hope everything is okay.
Hey Jeffrey! I'm looking to return this month. Actually, I'll be a guest tonight (12/13/21) on a live Q&A over at the Retro Cereal channel. More details over at the Community tab on my channel here. See you soon and thanks so much for the comment!
I certainly appreciate Steve's contribution to Yes. But that said, wherever Rick Wakeman goes I will follow.
Where you been man? New videos soon?
Hey JJ! Thanks so much for checking in... new stuff on the way soon! Hope you're well...
@@RushTrader You too man! God bless, always looking.
@@RushTrader Also, fantastic interview, always fun to hear his derision concerning the late 80s and Union. That Union album needed a logo like Gulf or Shell as it was the equivalent of a company product. Yes fans are hard to fool they actually listen to the music.
@@TheChadTI Yeah, that album was barely Yes considering all the guest players. It was basically ABWH2 demos that Anderson fleshed out with a producer and session players. The Rabin stuff was the only material that wasn't butchered and actually had members of Yes playing on it. What a mess.
@@RushTrader There is a great interview out there with the producer (Elies?) he trashes them all pretty bad, said they were lazy and he couldnt get good performances out of the ABWH guys. It's long but pretty detailed and worth reading.
Just an annoying nit-pik comment from me - in the intro, the 1 second clip credited as Kenny Burrell is actually Barney Kessel. Great interview on both parts 1 & 2. Thank you for this!
Thanks for picking up on that one John and glad you enjoyed!
merry christmas
Merry Christmas Robert!
@@RushTrader great shows and to the point hence ive subscribed to your channel . hello from australia
@@robertjacob5dmk3 from a land down under?? Welcome and thanks for the sub.
@@RushTrader yes sir..australia ..i remember 1st time kiss came to austalia in 1982 i me and my friends missed out o tickets. but i did get to see them in melbourne where they hold formula 1 race they (kiss) headlined the show
Just admire these guitar guys whilst they are here...Maestro Howe,Gilmour, Townsend, Blackmore, Page& Hackett, we have lost to many of these people already...
The SF Bay Area Band, Hush, was the first YES tribute group.
I'm glad "The Gates of Delirium" made tours decades on, one of their greatest works.
I bought later albums with Steve playing but today, it's only the 70's ones I play. 90125 which I liked suffers the same fate.
Check out the UA-cam reviews for the current 2022 tour.....
STEVE HOWE, GENIO. Sdls from Chile.
Thank you for the interview gift - Merry Christmas - watching your videos - I have a great respect for your input. I might not always agree but I really appreciate hearing your opinion. Best wishes for a good New Year. Thanks again for posting this interview. Be well.
Thanks so much for watching, I truly appreciate that! Have a great holiday and happy new year as well!
Great video!
Steve is a great musician.
Very good playing technique.
I grew up with YES music!
Thank you for the video!
great interview even thou im not steve howe fan. i saw yes in 2003 in australia the magnification tour
I did catch a Steve Howe solo show in 2000. It interesting, probably the first time I've seen anyone use a looping pedal. It was him by himself, no band but he managed to make a ton of sound.
There's a part of the interview I left out because it was bit technical about his approach for that tour where he talked about incorporating something called "Liquid Audio" into his live set.
Great interview Ant. A lot covered here that I never knew. Hope you branch out and interview the groups you cover via your own podcast.
Thanks for the comment Chad! I must admit, listening back to this interview kinda makes me want to do interviews again. Perhaps it's something I'll pursue for this channel in 2021, we'll see, thanks for the feedback!
Roy Smeck was the greatest influence on Steve.
Thanks for mentioning him, yep I do remember Howe talking about him at one point.
