    That's about exactly how capable a dual sport needs to be if one is to travel on any busy roads.
    The bikes that top out at 70ish are ok but that extra is what I believe cam really help one avoid possible hazards on busy roads.
    Thanks for the review.

      @@MobMoto That's interesting, I thought the stock ecu purposely limited the stock bike to 90mph by limiting the max rpm in 6th gear. Where does it say 105? Owner's manual? Service Manual? or the offroad manual?

    You can take it to the rev limiter safely. Don't be timid about it. After running it through the gears a few times, you can start to hear when it needs to be shifted. (Obviously...you ideally want to avoid the rev limiter) Another bit of advice I would offer is to use clutchless upshifts. Just load the shifter a smidge with your boot. The bike shifts quicker....and smoother. I road raced for 15 years and never used the clutch for upshifting. (All the fast guys did it) Tuck in to avoid the sail effect. I'm betting you'll see 100mph (briefly), if you do these things. Oh. bump up your tire pressures. 18psi min. I had a DRZ400 with a stock pipe, 3x3 airbox mod w/ JD jet kit. It would indicate 92-96 mph with stock gearing. It's a 5 speed, BTW. My KTM 525 EXC would pull off 102mph! Have fun. Pay attention to the wind as well.

    I have a Honda CRF 300L with a level 1 550 performance ecu tune, yoshi exhaust, opened airbox, high flow air filter, etc. If I am fully tucked I can get that bike to 83 mph. There is no way that 450RL top speed is anything less than 100 to 110 mph. If my little oh 300L can do 83 yours can do 100 at least. I am 170 lbs with crash guards, skid plate (extra weight). Come on man, let's go!

      I had (I've owned 2) a DRZ400S model with stock pipe/slip on, modified airbox (snorkel removed and area opened up 3"x3"), and JD jet kit. My friend has a 2020 CRF450L with vortex ECU and a slip on. In a drag race to top speed, he wins, but not by much. We are both expert level riders. It should be noted that I outweigh him by 65 pounds! (weight only effects acceleration...and not top speed) Handling and suspension on the CRF is superior. The DRZ is way to soft for my 235lbs. It's too soft for a 180lb rider. The CRF is much stiffer and the components are top notch. Big win for the CRF in this department. The DRZ starts, warms up and carburets very well. DRZs do NOT flame out. They are chugging machines. Another bonus for the DRZ is that an $80 jet kit gets you great performance. No need for an $800 ECU!! However, you have to be mechanically inclined to install them. The DRZ is super easy to own: Book says 3000 mile oil change intervals, but I did them sooner. Valve adjustment was I believe at 18,000. You need a shim kit and it isn't a tough job. Same goes for the CRF although intervals for the CRF will be much sooner. I'm from the school that says "if you can't adjust the valves on a single cylinder engine, dirt biking may not be for you" LOL! The 500 pound gorilla in the room...is the DRZ's weight. The DRZ is about 320lbs stock and there isn't a whole lot you can do about that. All steps taken to drop its weight are the exact same mods you can do with the CRF. Neither bikes are going to be advanced level single trackers anyway and I certainly don't mind. I'm a desert guy at heart and believe that if your trail ride requires buddies with rope to get everyone where they are going...that's not riding...that's torture and certainly not why I ride motorcycles. They are what they are. In the end, the CRF is the superior motorcycle. It is what many of us DRZ lovers thought Suzuki would replace the DRZ with long ago. I'm buying one very soon.

    Nice review ... I'd say though your 65 to 75mph comment at 6:02 is to conservative .. Honda Monkeys on freeways easily doing 65mph ... It just seemed when you got to 81mph you didn't fee comfortable going any faster .. and thats ok ... Pushing this bike to the extreme is not for everyone ...

    Stock rear is 51t ??? I was told 49 like the R and online I've seen 48,49,51
    Also the vibration being less then others is due to plastic engine covers and a urethane foam filled rear swing arm to dampen road vibration. My africa twin is still hell of alot smoother.

    • @MobMoto
      @MobMoto  Рік тому

      Stock gearing on the Honda 450 rl is 13-51. The Honda engine design is smoother than the ktm single-cylinder engine design. All singles are buzzier than parallel twins. The plastics are for noise reduction to pass EPA, I don't have the plastics on mine any more and its still smooth for a single.

      Are you sure you aren't referring to the DRZ400? LOL!! Half kidding. I had a chance to ride my buddies CRf450L and I was very impressed. I'm not sure where you are coming up with $3K needed? It's got great suspension and handles well. The only big gripe I've seen is the flame out at low speed, that can be cured in the ball park of $300-$800. My buddy installed a Vortex ECU and it did the job. It should be noted that if you are a wide open desert rider, the flameout issue is less of an issue, if at all. I had a KTM525EXC for many years and would ride it to work AND desert race it on weekends. I have little doubt that I could do the same on a Honda CRF450L. Strip all the street stuff off, throw on a set of proper tires, sign in, get my number and transponder and line up for the start. Will I beat the guy doing the same thing with his KTM500EXC? Probably not, but I'll be having just as much fun.......with $3K extra in my pocket!!! This bike is hardly a pile of poo
