- Honda CRF 450L Review - A Very Misunderstood Animal - 4000 mile owner review
Here is what we think of the CRF450L, after 18 months and over 4000 miles we thought it about time we told others what we think about the bike.
Please leave a comment or ask any question you may have about the bike
Thanks for watch. - Авто та транспорт
This is the best CRF450L review I have seen.
Very good of you to say so - thanks
Greetings, As an owner of the 450RL, I agree 100% with everything you said. This bike is indeed a dark horse! I'm currently wrapping up my mods and build. Stay tuned for a video of all my updates. Cheers!
Keep us posted and send us a link 👍
Great review! I own a 2019 CRF 450L and have done all the modifications that you described. It is absolutely a different motorcycle after all the modifications and in my mind is the unicorn that many people are searching for.
100%
Jumped on one the other week - fantastic feeling machine. I have a 300 Rally, and the 450L is a beast by comparison - but...the service intervals would kill it for many as a light adventures bike. Husky 701 still seems to be the front runner. Great review and edit mate - cheers! 😎👍
Yeah I do love the look of the 701s, but if you want a light, agile, kick-ass bike that can literally do everything, then something has to give, and for me the service intervals on the 450L are no more irritating that fuelling the bike 👍 thanks for the comments, appreciate it 🤘
I agree. I just picked up a 2024 450RL. As an upgrade to my xt-250 dual sport, it rips, I couldn’t be happier. Actually, I still need to upgrade the seat. 100 miles in and my butt is the most sore it’s ever been.
@@MrCococda it just drives me crazy that manufacturers cannot produce a decent seat. I’m thinking about getting the KTM 500 EXCF and it also has a rockhard seat! prices like that you should not have to replace your seat straight away.
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 So KTM has changed gears on the 690 finally? Because that was the reason I would never buy a 690. So how can the Husky 701 be really good if KTM didn't fix it? How many years has it not existed without them doing something about it?
100% agree. I own a 2021 450rl. I’m at 5,000 miles after 2 riding seasons. A fantastic machine for sure.
Great video and one of the best explanations about this bike I have ever seen!
I loved your summary ! Very good clarity
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on you tube this year ! (And I’ve watched a lot !)
Too kind 👍
Enjoying the videos mate, keep up the good work 👍
Awesome review mate, ace to hear how enthusiastic you are about the bike! 🙂
I’m in Portugal, with a CRF450RX. When it comes stock, it has an intake and exhaust restriction.
Swap those out and you have a massive 55HP ! (I use the “soft “ mode most of the time !) My bike still has a horn, stand, lights and indicators.
Massive fun. Just 107kg !!
Great video, spot on mate! I like how you showed the history, love my 2022 CRF450RL!
I really wanted to show the difference in pedigree with the CRF 250/300s, so many seem to think they are just the lighter little brothers, when in fact they are the heavier ugly sisters…
Love my CRF450L its everything I want and need from a adventure bike, the beast slays everything in Canada too!
Great review mate. Thanks for your insights and content. Helped me review potential ownership with some great context for how I would want to use the bike.
Excellent review mate. We are getting the RL here ( Oz ) soon and all going well this will be my next bike👍
Awesome video. I completely agree. I own this bike with similar mods and have over 17,000 trouble free miles on mine and absolutely love it. Keep up the good work.
Thanks - safe riding!
Just happened upon your channel after getting the OS map app. Fate or coincidence? The gpx routes are just what a newbie like me needed. Thanks for adding these.
Enjoyed your review, thanks. When the bike first came out in Australia it was hammered with criticism and it put me off. Wish I'd bought one now but thanks for clearing up what was previously an enigma to me. 👍🏿
Thanks - and you wouldn’t be alone there, lots of negative feedback from reviewers and owners. Thankfully by the time I was looking all the replacement parts were available and the cheat-codes from those doing the upgrades on UA-cam -you’ve gotta love UA-cam 🤷🏼♂️👍😂
Great review. It’s nice to hear from someone with some real seat time.
Yes! Best bike I have ever owned! I love it as well. One additional note, the suspension is incredible!
Nice video. I have one on order. Congratulations on your stellar race results!
Also own a Honda CRF 450L. Did similar modifications to it and I am really looking forward to getting out on it this summer. Bought it with an eye towards rallying. It's a bucket list thing for this old man. I've subscribed and hit the like button. Cheers!
Thanks 👍
I love my bike too. Great video bud.
Great review Mike, there’s always been such an amount of negativity here towards the bike mainly due to initial price coupled with the add ons to make it competitive as you point out but boy when you’ve done it you’ve got a very capable weapon there that can do so much.
You will always get some brand snobbery but you can’t knock the reliability and build quality of this little Honda and I also love my big KTM but for other reasons, so I’m not just coming at it from a Red only point of view. 👊
Great Review and excellent bike! I live in Canada and have been looking at this bike since it came out in 2019. I will get a new 450 RL once I get some money together.
Great review! I have '23 coming in April and can't wait. It's a shame there are so little hitting the dealerships as the lists are long. But, I'll get mine :D
Lucky you, I bet you can't wait!
This seals it , the CRF450RL will be my ultra light ADV along side my light ADV, the mighty DR650.
Great review ! I almost went for crf450rl when I sold my 690, two of my friends have them and they are very happy with them, but I ended up with a very good deal on a heavily modified 300l that I just couldn't pass, but who knows I may be getting it, but I think the reason why I didn't go for the 450rl was the mph ,I was getting 58mpg combine on the 690 with 74 hp while my friends were getting 40-45 on the 450 s with the vortex ECU, but I think that's about average on any of the other brands as well
Cheers 🏍️
Super cool video. So pleasant to just listen someone happy.
Ive watched some bike reviews and this is up there with the best ! Fantastic 👊
Thanks
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 does the ecu upgrade have any effect on power ? Presumably they are not limited to emmisions like Honda
@@Fartec yes. The UK/EU bike only had 27hp, the US version had around 40hp, both struggled at low speed on technical stuff, because of all the emission nonsense on the bike. Fitting the aftermarket ECU takes it to around 45-48hp depending on the map and exhaust etc. The motocross version of the bike I believe had around 53hp. So with an ECU and exhaust mod the bike absolutely pulls like a train, very usable power tho, not punchy like you'd get with an MX bike
Great review. I'm going to check out your channel for some rally videos.
Excellent review. If I could only own ONE off road - adventure bike it would be very similar to your modded 450l other than the pipe. I would have to retain the stock exhaust because I hate loud bikes for on road riding. Luckily for me I have two off road capable bikes. A bone stock 22 Yamaha WR 250F and a heavily modded DR 650. For longer adventure type rides the DR is magic. All day road comfort and it will absolutely destroy mega dollar heavy adventure bikes off road. If Honda made a rally version of the 450l like they do for the 300l I would be very tempted to buy that…
I totally agree with you on all points about this bike, I purchased my 450l as a progression from a 250l. I was very disappointed in it initially, then on went vortex and a yoshi, night and day modification. I love it
Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for the comments, good to hear about yet another happy 450L owner!
Fantastic review with passion and enthusiasm. . I have only just discovered this bike tbh and what i have seen so far is really positive. Like you say in the comments you dont have to be spending a fortune on ecu etc look for secondhand. What an amazing bike. How many bikes could you ride to a event do the event then ride home , absolute class.
Saw one on eBay yesterday hardly used and almost giving it away. Problem is getting some of the bits now like the IMS fuel tank. I’ve mine tho, so versatile and such fun to ride 👍
I do this on my 500 EXC in England all the time :-)
A sensible and considered review, thanks. I can see you’re a ‘fan’ but not silly about it. Such a bike is way beyond my price and my ability but I enjoyed this review. Les in UK
Thanks Les - used ones are coming down in price, so comparable prices now with similar spec bikes.
Excellent video, I’ve been toying with the idea of changing bikes next year, and heading down the route of a lighter adventure bike. But that said I love my T7
Food for thought though. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience of owning the CRF450L
Love my 450L, but equally love my T7, love the simplicity of both of them, especially the T7, not overloaded with unnecessary tech. If i was to only have the one then I'd probably sell both and get a 701, that said a mate came up last weekend on his 690, he said how good it was on the road and did he still need his Desert X, until predictably his 690 broke and I had to trailer him home. So for now I'm defo gonna stick with both bikes as you can't really put a price on reliability! Thanks for the comments, appreciate it
Good review and your passion for the bike shines through. My main concern is the service intervals, so good info re: the reality of that.
I do get that, but it seems to be the trade off between a truly lightweight and fun bike Vs a bike which is not as capable, not so light and lacking performance - I know where my style of riding/interests is better suited. We are all different tho and I just hope to inform people better about the 450L
Great review Mike. Enjoyed it. Thanks
You’re welcome buddy, hope you are well 👍
Awesome video mate!!
This may push me over the edge to get another dual sport. I have an 890 Rally and ride it like a 500 exc-f. It’s a beast but I do miss the lite bikes I’ve had in my past. The fact the aftermarket has fixed these flame out issues is great. My old 350 exc-f was the same with flame outs stock. Subscribed and looking forward to watching you race. I did the same with my dual sport a few years back. Beeping the horn at spectators is fun. 😂
Lots of great bikes out there - doing the events is the best bit for me, alway more fun and interesting than just doing the same old stuff all the time 👍
Great story telling - from an Aussie owner of an adventurised DRZ400. Much better understood I think.
Your built looks really good. Although the windscreen doesn't do much for me aesthetically but I understand for practical reasons. I was thinking of getting this but the lack of kickstarter is a bummer. Too bad there is basically no community of dirt bike in my country.
I had a 450L (am based in the UK) and I did every mod / upgrade you did plus a few more. I spent A LOT on the bike to get it to the sweet spot. I agree with everything you said about it and it being so capable, in fact I probably didn't push it as hard as I could have. I green laned it and did a couple of longer trips on the TET; it took everything in it's stride.
But I did have some issues, firstly lack of stuff! If you want to buy any parts or upgrades, forget buying them in the UK. The bike sold so few here that any stockists of parts have given up on it, so you need to look to the USA for anything and that costs £££ to import e.g. a Zeta Case Saver... $20 odd but in reality £50 with shipping and taxes, and as you mentioned things like plastics are crazy expensive.
I also got a bit fed up with servicing intervals... I stuck to the 600 miles and in hindshight probably didn't need to. I had anxiety over the clutch at points (using it a lot made me panic, but again no need!), the forks... all stuff I could service myself but lacked confidence and ironically I didn't trust a Honda main dealer to do the "right thing" (as you say this isn't a CRF 250L, it is an MX weapon!).
I sold mine last year due to a combination of factors, and wafter watching this, maybe I have a little regret! Perhaps I was a little silly to sell given how much I'd invested in it but reality is I am very happy with my current setup. This is a great video for anyone looking at getting one, it really is a great bike... once you get that Vortex on it!
Thanks for your comments, appreciate it. I can honestly say Ive had no issues with getting stuff, lots of what I got I bought 2nd hand on eBay, so got the vortex, Adv Spec fairing, tail tidy, tank all second hand. Broke my rear brake pedal at a race recently, got a replacement in no time. Only thing which I've found is hard to get is some of the plastics. My Zeta bits and pieces I just got my local MX shop to get, took about a week. The clutch is solid, its a proper off-road one, unlike the ones say in the CRF250/300s which burn out easily. Ive watched hours of stuff from other owners on youtube, guys like John T Young, and most of the answers to questions we all have are out there, you've just got to dig deep to find the info.
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 good stuff. I also watched John T Young... What that guy doesn't know about 450Ls... again, great vid. Highlights all the positives and made me realise maybe some of the negatives weren't so bad!
I do think some times people forget the looks thing, I have a T7 and compared to many other mid sized adventure bikes they are a bit lacking - but I think the 890 is ugly as hell, Toureg even worse, nearly everyone I know who has one doesn’t care about the performance. It’s more they just love the look of the bike. Defo the case for me with the 450L
Pity that Honda published 600 mile oil changes, I think they lost a lot of sales right there. Then they could have revised the ECU, and made the fuel tank a bit larger. All cheap ways to win over more customers.
@@captainamerica9353 other bikes are pretty much the same tho, small tanks, short service intervals (same with exc 450 or fe 450) - if you love the look of a bike and in essence a similar performance. Surely you’re always gonna buy the bike you way prefer the look of?
Subbed ! Great review mate. I’ve been going around in circles trying to decide on what bike to get . Something as a good all rounder . And this ticks a lot of boxes. Did you say they are not available though from now on in the uk?
No not new - they do come up occasionally on eBay etc, if you can find one with an IMS tank and a vortex ECU for sale then you'd save yourself a few quid.
By far my dream bike.
Noticed a few very spaced out byways there! That tiny railway bridge up by Thetford and then the water crossing down in Surrey! Hahah. Great lanes!
Never been on my bike to Surrey, but defo Yhetford
Thanks for the perspective! I've really been waffling on whether to buy one of these, as you see a lot of criticism of this model for a Honda...mostly that it requires at least $1000 in mods to make it "good" out of the box. But the reality is that statement is true of almost any modern high-performance bike. Honda has to appease the regulators before they can even try to please the customer. People buy T7's knowing the suspension is cheese and they need to invest $3-5k to make it good. People buy 890's knowing the reliability is a crapshoot (yes, some of them run like tops-but others struggle to run at all). Neither of those are a concern with this bike, so you're still coming out ahead in my book.
For a bike that most reviewers (including many long-term owners) tend to crap on for one reason or another, I'm having a tough time finding one used for a decent price. When I do find them, they're usually insanely low-mileage (for instance, a 2019 with
Love my 450rl as well. I’ve only added the flywheel weight and it has completely changed the bike. I haven’t found the need for ecu yet. I’ve done some pretty tight single tracks in the mountains here in Colorado and I have no more stalling issues.
Which flywheel weight are you running and how difficult was the install?
@@curtwilliams6655 I installed the Steahly 7oz flywheel weight. The install was ok. I say ok because I used the included install kit and it’s janky. If I had it to do over again I would have taken the flywheel to the dealer and had them press the weight on there.
Great review.. Now I want one.
Great review 👍🏻
I've got a 2004 crf450r and only rode it 100 miles and the motor seized. And to my shock since I own Hondas car 600 xr200 xr600r cb900 that the connecting rod was installed backwards. So it sits other than that 100 miles everything is brand new like it just came off the production line. Oh it did break three teeth off the drive sprocket and I had to have my left scapula reattached to my body. I just wish I could ride again but can't afford the build kit. Someday I'll have a way to get it fixed. It will be donated to the scrappers.
I have a 2019 with 10,500 hard miles. I have it loaded down like a pack mule. Only thing I have issues with are chains, sprockets and the chain guides/ sliders. I go through them like hot cakes. I think it’s because I have it so loaded down. Self induced. Bullet proof bike otherwise.
11:00 that’s an excellent point nt about the key ignition and steering lock !
Well son of a nutcracker, just what I was hoping for!
Else, the 290 vs 270 wet-lb really a putoff for enduro folks?
Well done
Are you by any chance also Ricky Gervais? He seriously must have grown up just next village... Love listening to you, love watching your great videos!
I think you’re the 3rd person to say that, wish I had Ricky’s money!… 🤷♂️🤘🤣
A really good video. Thanks. It’s hard to believe that Honda sell it with so little power, I wonder what that was all about.
No idea, makes no sense, especially as the other similar bikes by other brands didn’t have to do the same
Love the bike, my only issue is the services ... even 1.2k is not enough for what I do and I'm not willing to go around with oil on my back.
Good stuff, been flowing your channel for a while, best uk dualsport channel going, I have the same bike but have been making due with standard ecu, not as experienced as you but my question is is it as simple as changing the ecu and I assume the pipe? or is there anything else I need to do? I have a total standard 2019 with new tyres, hand gaurds, mirrors and engine gaurd. It is a great bike and a pleasure to see one of the very few videos o this bike in the uk, if you could advise on the above it would be appreciated, keep up the good work.
Yes, the Vortex ECU changes everything, watch some of John T Youngs videos on youtube. There are better ECUs probably, be it either the GET ECU or the AIM, one of those comes with an app to adjust the settings making it super customisable, a bit like the WR450. You don't have to change the exhaust, but it will save you weight and sound better if that is your thing. Changing the ECU is a game changer tho, brings the bike to life! Thanks for your comments and please don't hesitate to ask questions, I"m always happy to help.
Cheers, do I need to add the power up kit? Happy with the 25bhp, did you do this?
do you happen to have a list of all the mods installed? I'm currently building one and would love to see a full list if possible
Just sold my 2023 KLR 650 adventure. Too heavy for sugar sand here in Florida.
12:10 that's been my bigges question (which heretofore nobody had answered) Thanks!
Cracking video, thanks.
Me encanto el vídeo felicitaciones desde chile saludos 👏👏👏👏👏🙋🏻♂️🇨🇱
Athena get ecu. X headpipe with o2sensor welded in. large intakeboot stock tail pipe keeps it clean and quiet.
Surprised I’ve never bumped into you. I’m a fellow 450L owner and lots of your footage is around my neck of the woods
Until the next time then!
Are you on the UK Facebook page for the 450L?
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 I’m not a Facebook user, il ask a buddy to check it out for me. Thanks
nice review ! Thx jss
I rode off road once in about 1984 or 5 on a cr250 i think. Scared the stuff out of me. Road only ever since. This was a great watch and has made me wonder what i've missed.
Thanks a lot. Some say road riding is for pussies, although I’ve no idea what cats have to do with it…
Cool review 😎
Great review! I have one and love it too. Only thing I've found is, I also fitted the Adventure Spec mini fairing, and since I've doing so, I have a vibration rattle in the head stock area. Bloody annoying. I'll try a few things to see if I can mitigate it, but other than this little niggle, I totally love the bike.
Not had any issues at all with the mini fairing, been brilliant 👍
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 might be the front tip of the plastics against the IMS tank. I chased a vibration for ages and realised it was just the very end of the plastics vibrating. Resolved with some sticky foam pads
@@willkay33 I have this vibration too.
Awesome video
Fantastic review, well done! Have you any comments on its ability to do a bit of motorway miles, and faster A roads? Cheers
It's good on the faster roads, way better once you have the full power ECU. I've often wondered how people cope on fast roads or twisty roads with the 250/300Ls as they just don't have the grunt to rapidly overtake, which must surely make them a bit dangerous? The little screen thing I have on mine helps with the wind at 70+ mph, and has been very stable with luggage on. Now it's not in the same league as my T7, but then a T7 is way off a GS - the lighter the bike, the worse its gonna be in wind and air coming off big trucks etc. I genuinely believe the bike is the best compromise between a full on enduro bike and something like a 690/701 or an AJP PR7, with the fitted road gear like the lights and indicators, it's very comfortable on the road, but certainly really comes to life off it.
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 thanks for that, much appreciated. I had a T7 for a while but sold it for a 690 enduro r, also now sold to fund a very expensive kitchen!). Currently on a himalayan but getting the itch to get something a bit more gutsy.. Short list is ktm 390 adventure, another T7, or possibly a crf450l.. Favouring the 390 at the moment as I'm a bit more road biased, but do enjoy the dirt to get off the beaten path.. Is it shit on mpg?
What an amazing review.
Thanks 👍
Great review of your very capable bike, I agree with your opinion on the poor marketing strategy of Honda with this model. I think a lot of people considered it an expensive L model specially with the limited horsepower here in the UK. I did consider this bike when looking to purchase an "all-rounder" for want of a better word but the list price and the purchase of the kit needed to make it the bike the American market gets as standard just ruled it out for me, which was such a pity
For the life of me Pete I can't work out why the bike had to be so restricted in the UK, they certainly haven't had to knock 50% of the horsepower off a 690 to make it emissions compliant in the UK. I got my bike 2nd hand, £7500 with 250 miles on the clock, got the Vortex ECU off eBay for £350, so about £7850, I looked and looked but couldn't get a 690 or 701 for that with similar mileage. I think tho, certainly with me, the specs mean very little in some respects, it's more about what I like the look of - so you'll never see me on a GS 1250 as they are the ugliest bike ever, despite being very popular with the masses.
So my USA version isn’t as restricted as yours in Europe? People here still modded them like retuning the ecu and replacing the exhaust…. I didn’t want to due to lack of riding it much, lack of skill, and cost.
I have a 450RL and run it in the dirt as well as with SuperMoto wheels and tires. I enjoy it in both modes. I put an AIM ECU on it and deleted all the smog items and it is pretty good on power.
Happy owner of a 2019 450L (did about 5000 km on it). Totally agree with your review. I love this bike. The only downside I think is the availability of aftermarket parts (e.g. chain slider, plastics) and the fact that OEM parts are really really expensive.
I was wondering if you only fitted the FMF slip-on? Did you have to change anything to the header pipe?
As I mention in the vid I fitted a header pipe from a 450x, had to order it from japan but it didn't take long
I just changed the swing arm slider, same as the R one I'm sure.
Idk why all the emissions are so annoying on motorcycles. Motorcycles don’t even pollute. They are clean burning machines.
Great video, very informative. Great photography too. Would have liked to know some prices though, starting with the cost of the bike, but also that all-important ECU upgrade and the other bits and bobs such as tank and bashplate.
Thanks for the comment, appreciate it. Prices vary so much, but I probably should have given a ball park figure. Nearly everything tho (bike, ECU, tank, screen, seat) I got second hand. For me price is sort of irrelevant, say if the KTM EXC 450 was a fair bit cheaper I wouldn't have bought it as I don't like the look of it. And really the 450L is unique in that it is a proper dual sport, EXC, WR, FE etc are enduro bike that have naff bits added to make it road legal, and I liked the idea of the longer swingers for straight line stability. Plus as the bike is no longer available in the UK, which was who I was pitching the bike to, it kind of was irrelevant from that point of view as most bits you're gonna have to find second hand unless you get them from the States and lord knows what that is gonna cost
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 I would still be interested to know all the 2nd hand prices you paid!
@@pnblondon1087 bike 7500 with 250 miles on the clock (did a straight swap with a dealer and my Tiger 800 which I hated...) ecu 350, seat 50, mini fairing 50, exhaust system (all new) 450, can't remember on the hand guards but they are just normal zeta ones, tank 250, rear numberplate thingy was about 50 (used) err... There are a few other bits like mirrors and decal etc, but essentially that's it. And I'd do it all again, nothing else that catches my eye, like I said not many proper dual sports out there, certainly most other enduro 450s lack a decent stator output, bomb proof decent lights and indicators, key ignition and steering lock etc
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 Thanks for the extra info! Shocked by the cost of the ECU and exhaust, but I guess it still all adds up to not much more than you would have paid if you had bought the bike brand new...Interested to know why you hated the Tiger 800! Did you make a video about it? (I'm new to your channel). FWIW I have a KTM 450EXC in the garage that hasn't turned a wheel for a decade - my old Domi NX650 has been my main trailbike for years. Would love a machine with the light weight and power of the KTM with the low-maintenance, reliability and fast road cruising capability of the Domi.
@@pnblondon1087 my bikes should represent me and what I am and the ‘tribe’ I want to be part of. I’ve come from a motocross background so that influences everything, my bikes, the way I dress, how and where I ride. I should never have bought the tiger, it wasn’t me and not do I find myself drawn to people who ride them. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in all the racing and rallies I’ve done since getting into trail riding I’ve not seen a single person on a tiger, never seen a tiger with a decal kit looking awesome and ready to shred. They just aren’t me
Great review and a fellow TRF member. I have a 2020 CRF450L. I have the upgraded power ECU power upgrade kit. I changed the exhaust end can to an Arrow. But still had stalling at low speed. A booster plug was purchased and transformed this bike. Do I really need to change the ECU? Costly as a booster plug cost me £130.
I got my bike (250 miles on the clock) and all the other major bits second hand, so you don't have to pay the full price per say, but as I said in the video, I now have zero issues at slow speed.
Great review, thank you. I’m always curious as the total modification costs to transform the bike & sort out the apparent flaws…aa we know all bikes have a short list of essential mods!
I never understand when people say 'why spend that on mods, why not just get...?' Well because then I'd have a bike I don't want. I've never owned a bike in my life and not modified it to suit my needs, it's just what we do, it's part of ownership. My bike was £7500 with 250 miles on the clock, got most the other bits used except for the exhaust system - ECU 300, Tank 200, seat 50, mini fairing 50, exhaust system 450. There's obviously a lot more stuff but it gives you an idea. You don't need to spend much, just be smart!
Agreed. All bikes need mods!
Hey man just a question, I’m new in the UK from NZ, I’ve only been in London for the time I’ve been here but am desperate to buy a moto over here and hit the trails. Your enduro races and trail days looked sooo good, can I ask you where all of that is? I can’t stand London and need to move away from here, where you were riding looked like my kind of scene!
You will find all that sort of stuff all over England and Wales, best off joining a club, defo want to join the TRF 👍
I wanted something coming up from a KLX300 and found a 2019 CRF450L with only 750 miles on it, not even fully broken in. I'm in the USA, so my bike wasn't as choked up as the Euro model but still had poor on/off throttle issues and stalled a lot. I put in the AIM ECU with the full power and enduro modes and if it's stalled since, it's because of my poor throttle/clutch control, not because the bike has a defect. I've ridden a KTM 500 and I prefer the CRF. The KTM seems harsh compared to the Honda. With the AIM ECU in my CRF, if the KTM has more power, that's okay because the CRF has enough for me. The ECU and a new seat were must haves and now I also want to save up for the IMS tank. I think I'll ride the wheels of my CRF450L. When it's time for replacement, I doubt I'll be looking at KTM/Husqvarna, but I might consider the BETA 500. I know a guy who just got one and while I've not ridden it, I did sit on it and move it around and it is a LOT lighter than the CRF450L. I have a CRF250RX and that BETA 500 even feels lighter than it. But hopefully Honda will keep the CRF450RL in the USA for a while or maybe even update it moving forward. If so, I'll be looking at getting one of those when/if it comes time to replace the one I have already.
No idea where i'd go next, perhaps a WR450, maybe a 701, but the 450L is so easy to live with, especially from a lightweight adventure riding point of view. Perhaps Honda will bring it back to the UK, hope so.
I have mine kitted out just about the exact same way haha. I went with a Yoshi exhaust but otherwise about identical!
Great review thanks. So is the UK L the equivalent of the RL in the US?
Yes - they re branded the L to the RL - exact same bike just different decals. I’m guessing they weren’t selling enough of them in Europe, because they restricted them so much, so stopped selling them over here
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 Ahhh, that clears up a lot thanks! It's not easy to find out info like that on these bikes. Had a XR650R way back when, have an Africa Twin now since 2017. I love the AT, but Jesus is that 240kg a lot sometimes. The last while been getting all misty about the light weight and simplicity of the XR, these look brilliant…
Excellent bike!
I love my CRF450RL in the dirt, but with dirt-capable tires, the high-speed left/right stability is marginal. Have you had any issues with that? With the stock 50/50 tires, it was ok up to 70mph, but beyond that progressively scary, and the supposed top speed is over 90. Loading and dirt tires both make it worse - uncomfortable over 60mph. What would you do? Thx.
only ever had road legal dirt tyres on mine and never had an issue. The stock tyres aren't aggressive enough for me, too road biased, I go for something like Michelin Trackers as a minimum
Good review
Great video. Thanks. Can I ask. How much were all the upgrades?
I bought most things secondhand - bike 7500 with 250 miles on the clock, ECU 350, tank 200, seat 50 Adv Spec bits around 80 - exhaust was about 400 new, few other bits but most I got on eBay or local mx shop
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 thanks for the reply. Wow, that is a fantastic price on the bike.. so the build, give or take, 10k. Not bad
The good news is, you can get cheap used units from folks upgrading from the 250 or 300 and simply cant ride it with the flame out issue. I found just increasing the idle speed and finishing the break in made it so much better. At 1000 miles its a much better bike than when i first got it 300 miles second hand.
I hear about flame out issues and throttle problems but that's defo not a problem I've had, but i did change the ECU not long after I got the bike, as as probably a better rider i tend to be giving it some beans, although I do a lot of racing which involves slow stuff in woods, technical climbs etc. As ever with any bike, if it's the bike you want you'll make it work for you, certainly here in the UK there isn't really an alternative for me, I think after the 450L i might have to go down the line of a 450RX
@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 my enduro bike is a 300 xcw with a smart carb, so it was an adjustment switching, once I figured out to just never close the throttle keep it at 4000ish and apply power with the clutch. Still practicing double bliping with the clutch rather than the throttle on log crossings. But yeah mine would die at every red light and stop sign on the street, but that went away with mileage.
Nice review !! i m so close to buy one !! Does the bike has a steering lock key ? to park the bike safely ? thanks a lot
Yes has a key and steering lock, very handy when parking the bike up at the garage or cafe etc 👍
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 nice ! thanks mate !!
Flame out is the only reason this bike is failing.
You have addressed that with the ecu. Why should I pay 10k (us) for honda reliability when I need to fix it (hopefully get the right parts)?
It has many of the features/performance that would satisfy trail/enduro/dual sport riders.
Honda made compromises to make it emissions compliant.
It's in the electrical, not mechanical.
If they would have made a detuned version with an off road map, many more ppl would be riding the 450L.
Not ever had flameout issues, even before the ECU change. If you like the Honda and think the other bikes are ugly then you have no choice, have a few friends who own a 450L and will never buy a KTM. Yes they did it because of the emissions, but why haven't KTM or Yamaha had to do the same thing?
Seems kind of tall! What do you think? What is your inseam? Did you lower it any?
I'm 5' 11" tall - it's probably a standard height for a bike like that, not lowered mine but some do.
So about 16 G,s
Can make any dp. Bike awesome
Im currently riding the 300,l love the bike and have had a few upgrades to make it better... but it does lack the punch with the power only giving 27bhp.. would the 450l be another option to consider.?
I guess it depends on what you want to do on it. The 450 is obviously a fair bit lighter, with a vortex ECU you'll get around 45hp and way better stock suspension that's really good. I can't fault mine, it's a genuine unicorn bike I feel - race, adventure or just steady trail riding it's brilliant at all of them
Looked at this bike as an adventure bike, but the service intervals put me off. About to do a 6000 mile trip to Morocco - 4 to 10 oil and filter changes? I now have a CRF250L Rally with a 8000 mile service interval.
Yeah I wanted something which could be great at everything, from racing to rallying and adventure riding, the CRF 250/300s are just too heavy and sluggish for me, the oil changes take no time and are a bearable compromise when you consider how good the bike is. We are all different tho and I get that many prefer a simple, steady life. Some friends did the TAT last year, they shipped 300 Rallies over to the US and rode across America. Every one of them said they wished they'd taken better, more lightweight at responsive bikes for the trip, and just put up with the servicing. We are all different tho and all have different preferences - I just wanted to inform people about his particular bike.
I’d do what many of the 500excf owners do and adopt oil changes at approx 2000-2500km. For non racing the 500 is proving to be the best lightweight dirt bike ever made and I don’t see why the crf couldn’t do the same.
Can you link the mods you used on the mini fairing? Like the glass, usb, and phone connection? I assume the switch is to turn on the usb.
it's just a regular USB charger from amazon, no idea which one exactly, and yes the switch is just a cheap switch from amazon for the charger - straight onto the batter, there is an accessory plug on the bike tho but I use that for my extra lighting kit. The mini fairing screen is just a bit of perspex and I make the screen myself. Nearly everything on the bike, the fairing, seat, vortex, tank etc I got either on eBay, Facebook market place or via local forums. Exhaust is about all i bought new and that was from eBay.
Hey - I just picked up a 2022 with 400 miles on it. I do not want to put aftermarket exhaust on it - this is a hard no. Anyways, I mostly ride hard tight trails and tight windy hills, and sure enough that "flame out" thing is happening a lot. Pull in clutch, throttle pops, engine dies. I ordered the G2 throttle tamer, which I do not expect will fix this issue since it happens with clutch in. Next I am considering the Flywheel Weight. Do you think that will solve it? Again I want to keep stock exhaust. Will an ECU still fix the problem with stock exhaust? I am hoping to get away with the FWW and not need an ECU. Anyway thanks for any feedback
Vortex Ecu and FMF exhaust on mine and it’s sorted - loads of info on UA-cam tho and various Facebook groups on this
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 can't do an exhaust because of where I live. do you know if the ECU will fix the stall out problem without an exhaust?
@@mikem55555 it did on my UK spec bike
VEry nice
Sounds like a newer DRZ400, that's three times the price with less horsepower/torque; and worse standard equipment such as a smaller fuel tank and has stalling issues if you don't change the ecu..
I guess they're some reasons why it wasn't a big hit in the UK.
Still looks great, and you did a great review bud! Nice one! 🤘🤘🤘
48hp once sorted, way lighter, better suspension, frame, wheels, looks awesome, 6 speed box, good enough to race and be very competitive - would I sooner pay more and end up with a kick ass bike - hell yes. Bikes are always subjective, we all have different tastes and at the minute the only other bike I look at and think yeah I’d have that in my garage is the WR450, but that’s with my racing head on, not my do it all head on.
Any thoughts on turning the 450L into a supermoto, and how it would feel in comparison with a DRZ400? :)
Lots in the US seem to be doing it, no idea how it compares to other bikes in that respect
What sort of speed can you comfortably get on the motorway loaded up after the ecu upgrade?
it will sit out 75 all day, had it up to almost 100mph once. Plenty of power to overtake and is stable on the road. Watch the review Dave Lomax does of the 450L, he rides from northern England all the way to Morocco on the standard 27hp bike. Obviously the bigger the bike the better they are on the road, but I feel the 450L hits the sweet spot between road and off-road
Great video! I was thinking about getting a 450L for a while, but ended up finding a 650R in great condition. Can’t say I’m disappointed haha.
Question tho. How much are rally’s, generally? I’ve been wanting to try and get into it but after looking at some prices, it really made me second guess the idea..
the Brit Rally Champs are about £160 and the Baja rallies are about 170/180. It sounds a lot but you do get 2 days racing, marshals, first aid and sometimes even food on the saturday evening. Best thing i think with them is the bits you get to ride at the various locations that you can't ride any other way. So you get some really cool, original and unique routes that you won't be able to ride any other time. Plus all the camaraderie and laughs you have with mates etc, it's difficult to put a price on that really. I prefer the brit rally champs but they are way more technical than the Baja, but they are designed to be good for big bikes.
