    Wow, this is a really old school view on addiction treatment. Addiction counselors do not have to be addicts. The recovery rate for people who do not do 12 step is not zero unless your treatment is extremely rigid. 12 step does not work for everyone. There are other ways of sustaining long term recovery.

      yes exactly! i went to a 12 step program for years and never stayed clean. i’ve been clean for 2 years now and haven’t stepped foot into a meeting. 12 step fellowships aren’t the “end-all be-all” to recovery. yes it works for some people and that’s great, but majority of people it does not. everyone recovers differently.

      I agree. One size does not fit all. If we are not into the 12 steps method does not mean we will not be cured.

    seriously? 179 thumbs up? Here's my qualifications: I'm 39 years old. From age 15 to 34 I was an IV addict, heroin and cocaine. I was also severely bipolar, type 1 (still am, of course, though back then I messed around with the meds and almost never took them as prescribed). 3/4s of those years I was either in a rehab or psychiatric hospital. I always went to one of these places after a particularly ugly event, like the time I ODed and died in the bathroom of an AA meeting and had to be defibrillated and narcanned in front of the entire meeting group, or the time I tried skipping my lithium for a week (didn't sleep much, either) and ended up in handcuffs and then in restraints at the local psych ER after first declaring that i was now capable of flight and attempted to jump off a 30th floor balcony (my friends restrained me), then doing a lot of other crazy stuff that i don't feel like listing, before i ended the night by menacing my best friend with a butcher knife because was she clearly a clone sent back to kill me (that's when my friends called the police).*
    It goes on like this until 2014. to make it short and sweet: i went on methadone (280 mg. the highest dose in poughkeepsie - - a dubious honor, but I'll take it). I stopped messing with my meds and began actually taking them as prescribed. (this didn't all happen overnight; i'm compressing for brevity). I stopped using drugs. A year later and I actually achieved (according to my psydoc) mood stability.
    Now I'm halfway through a CASAC course. Yeah, before I bombed out of college on heroin and manic psychosis, I had been pre-med; I definitely thought my life would be different. But you play the hand you get. Or you put a shotgun in your mouth.
    Anyhow. Here's my point: I had really no opinion of this video -- OK, it was boring and outdated -- until that idiot started his stupid rant against psychopharmacology and psychiatry in general. I'm sure someone else already covered the salient details, and I'm done taking a shit, so I'll finish just by saying: this video spreads disinformation. whomever distributed this piece of feces deserves to be drawn & quartered, as does the moron(s) who wrote and created this film equivalent of clinical retardation. great!

    This video is wonderful! You must have boundaries in place , especially in this type of profession. What I thought would be my greatest strength... was actually my greatest weakness! The example you gave of wanting to save the world and rescue addicts. I've worked very hard for the last 2 years working on myself after realizing that a lack of boundaries would be disastrous as you say! "The most Compassionate and Happy people are the most Boundaried " Generosity can not exist without it. I'm overwhelmed at how much I've learned and the difference its made in all areas of my life... ❤️ thank you Dr. L

      People like him?? He has spent so much of his life teaching / supporting others, and he is a recovering addict as well! Inpatient treatment is not for everyone but if you look at recovery statistics, what you say worked for you is a rarity! I wish you all the best in your sobriety and remember we should support others who have been there and are now " Making a difference in the lives of others " surrounding ourselves with people like us 😊

    I appreciate the effort but this video has an extremely one-sided view of counseling,recovery, and what it takes...I agree with some points but there are far more avenues than 12 steps

    Most drug addiction counslers are not addicts most counslers are working in a drug treatment centers Like methadone clinics, or suboxone clinics and there jobs are not to tough,just alot of client intake In my opinion I think it maybe a little better for a drug counsler to understand more of where a client is coming from if they were once a drug addict themselves

      Realistically I dont think any counselor with education would say anything about cannabis unless it's clear you just can't control it

    • @angelablackthorne3026
      @angelablackthorne3026 5 років тому +2

      I have to respectfully disagree that we can keep cannabis out of the discussion about addiction entirely. About 9% of people have susceptibility to tissue dependence on Cannabis. It's a small portion of the population but they also tend to be people with multiple addictions and dual diagnosis. A harm-reduction approach may be appropriate, especially now that it's being gradually legalized, but to totally discount or disregard that cannabis has addictive potential for some people would not be responsible for an addictions counselor. You may find some clients that have this as a serious issue affecting their lives.

    • @unapologeticallynikki

      Savage Reefer the school I went to only required you to be clean for a year. This video is BS anyways because it says you can only be an addiction counselor if you were an addict. I’m was never an addict and I’m doing it.

    Music is irritating. Not a word about the cause of addictions. If you don’t know or address the cause of any disease, failure is guaranteed. But apparently this doc made a career of failure.

    I am a counselor/ clinician and I am not an addict.
    I have never been an addict in my life
    I have soooo much to offer the clients
    I think the addicts look up to a non addict more.

    • @romega951
      @romega951 5 років тому +2

      uhhh don't think so you think that you have your own issues, the grants for opiate recovery don't even want to hire non-addicts-peer certification. Your patients probably just bull shit you-like this little man said addicts are creative- a person who is not an addict working with addicts is not desiring people to look up to them. That shouldn't even come out your mouth. you can be a recovered addict and your patients don't know..listen to the little man and get off your high horse! No matter how you look at it if you have not been addicted to a substance then you can only teach from the perspective of your education and equating other addictions you may have experienced through a family member, friend but you will never be able to say you have been there!

    • @amberunthank7209
      @amberunthank7209 3 роки тому

      @@romega951, you do not need to be an addict, but you do need to have some emotional background for clients to truly trust or open to you. Never an addict but married to one and was a child of one.

    • @amberunthank7209
      @amberunthank7209 3 роки тому

      Clients do open more when you have an emotional background with addiction. A rich person with just a degree will not progress with an addict if they only have experience from a book. I was not an addict but was married for seventeen years to one and was a child to an addict and co-dependent. Personally, I have been in the trenches so the addict feels that they can trust others like themselves. Even though I was through the gutters, I have lots of empathy and do not believe in intervention nor pushing away the family member but not giving money, but love and non-monetary support.
