There's a book coming out soon, maybe it could be helpful for your project: The Field Armies of the East Roman Empire 361-630 by Anthony Kaldellis and Marion Kruse
Just checked it out, that book looks great, thanks for the suggestion! Fascinating period, the sources seem thin on the ground though! Out of curiosity, have you read Procopius?
@TriariusWarGaming Yes I have read some of Procopius. I've also read a bit of the later Byzantine chronicler Skylitzes who compiled a lot of older material in the 1100s which is an interesting history.
Lol no one knows what the fuck Lanciarii were, the term goes all the way back to the 1st century CE, I have a feeling that the term changed meaning over times, not unlike the hastati or Rorarii
When I rebase I start by soaking the units in a low tub of water for hours with water just barely overflowing over the top of the base.
Interesting. Will be good to hear how you get on with Saga. I’ve played the dark ages version but never the ancients one. 👍
The game is fun, definitely on the more "gamey" side, but very enjoyable!

Yeah, I've heard them also suggested to be bodyguards or other random things. I think you are right though, just like we still have "cavalry" today...
