A showcase of the terrain I have done for my Romans, buildings are from Sarissa Precision and warbases. I used clay or spackle to give texture. The buildings from this summer I used oil washes for weathering. Trees and roads are scratch built.

Great update! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Superb showcase...and nice equipment/tactics explanations!
Thanks so much man!
More great progress! If you are concerned about using the Thebans on the Carthage side you could always drop a single file linear base rank of 'generic' hoplites, or with Carthagenian decals, at the front of the bases to hide the Theban decals a little? And many thnaks for the channel mention too
Thanks man! That's a good idea, finding ways to blend troops into the Carthaginians. Hey and no worries, thank you for the book recommendation it has been very helpful
Good idea on replacing the Agema arms and hands with plastic ones
It actually works pretty well, the plastic glues on fairly securely to the metal if you have two good surfaces.
Love the figure in black armor with the octopus shield 17:54
Thanks so much! Yeah that guy sticks out as special, one of my favorites to paint
Loved the guy carrying around the 3 day old decapitated head! Total cloud of flies attack bonus dice. lol. Those numbers of completed are great! That's some serious output. The battleline map suggests the Greeks probably had horses at the bottom there. Are you going to do any Greek cavalry?
@@TriariusWarGaming nessuna scusa tranquillo e buon lavoro!:) Athenian Empire!!!:):)
Which figures to use for Carthage is an interesting question. I can understand the argument that they would be mostly Hellenized hoplites, but I would still want to see the models be distinct from the Greek forces. Complicating the matter is most figures for Carthage are more inline for the 2nd Punic wars and the Romanizing influence on those troops. Looking at Victrix, the Citizen Infantry, and half of the Warriors of Carthage kits should work. The Numidian Infantry (possibly with a shield swap) as lower class formed infantry units could work. For other manufactures, I'm sure Gripping Beast has something that could work. 1st Corp & Newline have Libyan troops. But all three of these brands will be noticeably smaller than Victrix.
Great comment, thanks for the detailed response! I am definitely looking into the Victrix Carthaginians with some potential for conversions as well. I think some of my hoplites might just have to subtly join the Carthaginian ranks to boost the numbers. We will see!
this is an interesting project, seems like a lesser known battle of the ancient world
Greece Proper definitely gets more attention as there is more primary literature - which includes some of the greatest works of all time. I think the Persian Wars get much more press as well due to some of the famous events like the three hundred, as well as how it is played as an existential civilizational conflict for the Greeks. Not to mention the Spartans and Athenians are so distinct. The Greco-Punic Wars also suffer from a lack of real decisive battles - neither side is really able to make long term strategic gains, it mainly just see-saws back and forth between Carthage and Syracuse for the best part of 200 years. Sicily was extremely challenging to conquer given its density of well secured fortress cities with ever changing allegiances. Neither side is really able to ever totally evict the other or strike a knock out blow.
@ that makes sense then as to why its less known. 200 years of conflict is a long time though!
badass
Thanks man!
Bought a large Victrix Punic set. PO'd that R. Roman cav and all the Celtic sets were far larger than everything else. Roman inf, Carthaginians, Spaniards, Numidians all match and are outstanding.
Yes I agree that some of the cavalry sets are very disproportionate. I wish they would address this, as it is really annoying. I think the horses are actually fairly realistic, but the riders are massive. Strangely the Numidian cavalry is perfectly proportioned with the infantry.
I don't get why Firelock Games didn't make it into at least brackets in the image? They have been killing it recently and their "Blood and.." series is being adapted into multiple periods with quite atmospheric models.
Yeah firelock games is certainly a major omission, their products look really good and I think branch out of the typical historical scene. I have only heard good things.
Very good video, save time is the key. Looking forward to see your Greek Hoplite project. One day I will dig up my pile of shame Greek Hoplite boxes I have hidden away. 👍
Thanks man! It's not the pile of shame, it's the strategic reserves. Some of the minis in the project I have been holding onto since 2018!
Excellent video, planning some big projects for 2025 myself so this came just in time.
Thanks man, I am excited to see what you have for projects!
What kind of bases are you putting them on please? They miniatures just “flow” together.
Thanks man, the bases are from the "Big red bat shop"
I have never been to a big historical game but you have stroked my Interest. I would like to volunteer my services as a graphic designer for your literature, poster, etc.
Thanks so much man! You can contact me at triariuswargaming@gmail.com. Putting together some kind of poster or flier would be awesome!
Great video! Just found your channel and gave a sub. I’m currently working on Successor, Greek and Persian armies and look forward to watching your progress and getting more tips! Also for shields, I like to put about 40 on a piece of cardboard, paint, apply transfers and then glue to the figures. I’ve found that really helps me do them quicker as it makes it easier to apply the transfers when the shield is sitting on a flat surface.
Thanks so much man! Good luck with your armies, I am using all my powers of restraint to not buy Persians! Thanks for the shield tip, I will have to try that out!
Physical fitness and wargame for mental fitness. Sub!!!!!
Thanks man, mind and body work together!
Great video! Your thumbnail of the WAB book got my interest as that was the historical game for me at the time until its demise. You just inspired me to go back to my Imperial Roman army and start a game.
Get those Imperial Romans going! I have quite a few of the WAB books, I think they are an awesome resource and something missing in the historical arena today.
very inspiring. i did 24 hoplites for a SAGA warband, all painted in blue and white for athens, and i found it to be a real drain. wild that you are planning to build so many.
That's awesome, sounds like a cool warband! This is my second massive project like this. Now I have gotten in the zone with the hoplite painting they go a lot faster.
Very interesting project. I must admit, if I was doing it, I would have chosen a smaller scale of miniature!
Smaller scale would be a lot more practical! I've caught the crazy though unfortunately.
Love the dog Christmas Ornament product placement!
I'm in the pocket of my big Christmas my friend.
Very thoughtful approach to this project. Looking forward to your progress.
Thanks! Should have an update in a week or two
@@TriariusWarGaming Looking forward to it! Keep up the fine work!
Amazing and interesting video, sharing your thought process on how to tackle a big project like this. I enjoyed your macedonian videos years ago, really looking forward to the next videos. I am doing something similar in 15mm and love the research you do. Need to rearrange my shields right now, brb
Thanks so much! Doing these Greeks makes me want to revamp my Macedonians in a major way, I have been having dangerous thoughts. Are you using Xyston figures? Best of luck with your project
I agree with your approach to painting. Its always important to think about painting a complete army, not fixating on perfection for each individual figure
Once figures are on the table and played with a few times the imperfections tend to disappear, at least for myself. The enemy of good is perfect.
Best of luck, I am here for this, bell button pressed.
Thanks so much! Should have the next video out in a week or two about my Thebans and conversions I am doing.
Sounds awesome, and a great start made already. Best of luck, following this one keenly!
Thanks so much man!
Great seeing a new video from you!
Thanks!
Such a fantastic idea, project, and presentation!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
Octoboss, had me cracking up.
Gotta throw in some fun stuff. Furiosa and Fury Road are basically the Iliad and the Odyssey anyways
144 guys in a month! Wow! Those are some impressive numbers and based too! Great insight on doing such a large project. I'm more of a unit at time guy, but I understand the method of working the colors in batches like you've done.
One unit at a time is definitely better for morale and less tedious. Painting up a bulk lot before basing can be a painful at times.
NICE!!!! You can do it! Get after it!
Thanks so much!
Excellent video, well put together. Putting those hoplites four deep looks great on the table. Are you going to tackle the Carthaginian army too?
Thanks! Yeah I will be moving to Carthaginians over the summer, I am going to do a bunch of Iberians, then African infantry, and probably some Numidians and Gauls.
600 hoplites your a crazy person 😵💫😵💫😵💫
Apparently I am on the hook for 1000 hoplites lol
@rangerminiaturesandgaming3647 wtf a 1000 well you do have an air brush.
Your signed up for 800
@rangerminiaturesandgaming3647 I'll see what I can do
@@holydiver539 I'm just fucking with you, or am i?
I totally agree - the competing medieval ranges from Victrix and Wargames Atlantic are just incredible. Yarkshire Gamer has a preference for large, massed battles so his audience may prefer older metal sculptors.
Where did you get the cloth looking terrain underlay. That thing is awesome I want one.
I think that one is from a company called Geek Villian - the specific one is the "Sicily" mat
@ awesome thank you for responding I’ll look into it!
@@Catholicknight89 No worries man glad to help!
Where is Essex Miniatures? One of the biggest ranges and longest established suppliers.
Impressive beginnings, looking forward to seeing the units painted up!
Thanks man! Project update coming this weekend!
Very nice thanks for sharing
Thanks!
I'd like to see how you're going to plan out your hoplites. I'm fixing to pick up some generic odds and ends for Greece from Victrix; the unarmored dudes, archers to fill in numbers for any future (mythical at this point) city state army. Loved the idea of using the Gallic Fanatics as Spartans. Might steal that one. I'm also eyeing the Persians too at the moment. I watched 300 and then Ranger's video and was all over the web pages looking. Hope your work baloney sorts itself out as soon as possible. Nice heads up on the Foundry sale. Totally forgot about it.
Thanks man! Yeah I will probably have a planning video out sometime in the next few weeks. It's dangerous watching videos man, you might just wake up tomorrow with a Persian army ordered.
Interesting ideal for using the naked Celt kits
good luck with that pay situation, it sounds very frustrating
Yeah... Hopefully it gets worked out... VT is kinda facing a reckoning tax wise due to decades of poor planning and demographic forces all coming to a crisis point.
those late Romans look great, hope you can get more hobby time in
Thanks, next up is Alan horse archers
Wooooo 30 mins for set up, crazy
Yeah I ended up giving the players their orders of battle and then had them just deploy troops straight from the cases to save time. They were also nice enough to put them all back as well.
I saw your game, it was a very impressive table!
Thanks man! I appreciate it. If you are going to be at mayhem stop by and play in a game!
The horse archers are calling 🐴
They are, going to assemble some huns and paint up horse archers next
Looks like it was a fun game. Everybody loves the Barbarians. What con is in February in Mass?
Haha yeah, gotta love the Barbarians. Its called total con in Marlborough MA
By the way, I know this is a year later, but did you ever find out what might have happened with the varnish, or how to avoid the varnish ruining the superb paint job you had?
Not sure, but I switched varnishes. The varnish accident happened with Vallejo brand Matt varnish. I have since switched to Windsor Newton Galeria Matt Varnish and have had no problems with that product.
@@TriariusWarGaming that’s surprising, I wouldn’t have expected Vallejo varnish to have that kind of issue. I’ll take a look at the other, especially as I’m getting close to the varnish stage for my own minis.
@@DavGre I might not have shaken the bottle up enough, I'm not sure why that batch went so wrong as I had used that varnish before successfully.
I love how you really captured a lot of what was going on in the middle imperial: some early Imperial stuff exists, but is getting phased out, while other late roman stuff was getting phased in, but it took time to get adopted substantially until near the end of the 3rd century (or at least after 260). One thing I always wondered about was the chainmail coifs being used during this period, as it didn't seem to continue on into the late roman period. Was that common or was it merely a product of the crisis of the third century itself?
Thanks man much appreciated! As far as I know, all the evidence for the coifs come from wall paintings from the Dura Europa excavations dated to the 3rd century. I know there is some debate about what we are actually seeing in the images are actually coifs. I think there is speculation if they were an eastern thing,. I think it would be reasonable to include them in a later army if you believe they existed.
