Viking Vs. Viking Battle Report (Lion Rampant 2nd edition)
Played the Sunday game at H-Con. Roman center Left. Had a great time. Outstanding job on the sceanario. Thanks a bunch for all the hardwork.
What rules did you use for this game? Hail Ceaser?
We used “To the strongest” it’s a great ruleset for massed battles like this. It’s my go to ancients set.
Did I spot a victory medal cup? Gotta get glass or metal to hear that clink! Love it.
That’s a solid call, next time I’m bringing glass cups
A&A roman range is by far my favorite romans. Aventine ones are probably best sculpted, but A&A romans have some king of "mojo" the others don't have. I am so sorry for the issue with the varnish. I run into that issue, but I had no other solution rather than to change the varnish. Anyway, great collection.
I agree that the A&A Romans have something special to them. They paint up really well as well.
Epic culmination of a great looking project! Congrats to you and Ranger for putting this on at historicon!
Thanks so much man, greatly appreciate it!
This was an exception game! I was the Roman Cavalry Commander in Sundays game...loved it! My son, Dan had a blast working the German center. I think you hit it on the head about what "wargaming" game should...epic displays like this game. I'm still jaw-dropped on the volume of figures and especially how well the rules played out. We have never played the rules before and was able to pick them up fairly quick. Great video and will look forward what you guys come up with in future events. Take care!
Thanks so much for playing in the game and I'm glad you had a great time! And thanks for your kind words!
I enjoyed all the videos leading up to the event itself. This video shows the whole shebang! Congratulations on a job well done. Thanks for your journey with us.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed following the project and thanks for your kind words!
looked like an amazing game. Well done to you guys running something so impressive, especially for a first time at such a big show
Thanks so much man! Glad you enjoyed the project!
Obviously the battle map that was set out in the Osprey book has both armies facing off, but do you feel that 28mm battles start off like this more often than not? just wondering as I'm looking into 28mm figures because I love the miniatures, but really struggle to see how they're practical for gaming purposes.
In my experience 28mm miniatures are the absolute best for skirmish games, TTRPGs, and medium scale engagements where you want to be able to see the details on the individual miniatures but still don't have piles and piles of them on the table. They get somewhat inconvenient for genuinely large scale games, but as you can see in the video they also look spectacular in the effort.
Yes there is definitely a trade off between the nice looking 28mm figures and the size required to pull off a spectacle. This kind of project is also not feasible for someone just getting in the hobby - it takes to develop the skills to manage army creation at this level. I'm still learning my self how to pull off these big projects. What I would suggest is start small and then do a "slow grow". Start out doing small scale clashes and build up over time. One thing you can do is paint parallel armies. Get a box of 28mm of something you like and then get some 15 or 10mm figures. Paint both at this same time, you can do some large small scale armies for cheap in the meantime while you develop your 28mm collection. Storage is the biggest thing to thing about with 28mm, you definitely need some storage space like a spare closet or basement (or under the bed etc) to keep all the figures. The bottom line though is if you don't like the figures you are painting you won't paint them. And you can do some great smaller clashes with 28mm on a 6 X4 - that is what most of the games I play at home are.
@@TriariusWarGaming absolutely agree. Your collections are awesome for sure and I think when it comes to the larger engagements my worry is not having the depth in the table to pull it off. You can always make the table wider but 6ft seems close to the limit for most people in terms of reach. I’m going to pick up a box of 28mm as I love painting that scale, but with living close to Eureka miniatures I have found myself investing in the AB range which has some amazing sculpted models.
@@alexanderbergbacka6825 Yes the range of miniatures is staggering at 28mm, plus they look great. I’ve just recently invested in some AB 20mm WW2 miniatures for Chain of command as I found it a nice trade off between size and detail.
Plataea?
Good guess but further west. We are looking at Ancient Sicily.
Hey brother, great overview of the event and lessons learned as being unfamiliar with this convention, I had a great time plugging into this project with you and the Ranger. Had a blast hosting the game with you and bullshitting with you in our limited free time. Your mastery of the ruleset really led to truly seamless GMing. I look forward to joining you for the next one. Take care! -D
Thanks so much man!
Wow! Holy moly! Impressive and looked like great fun. Glad it worked out good for you guys.
Thanks man! Much appreciated!
Congratulations on the successful completion of your project. A huge undertaking with an immense amount of time (not to mention cost) expended. Looks like you used "To the Strongest" as your rules of choice. I'm glad everyone, including yourself, had a good time. I'm assuming the people who played were mostly strangers. Fantastic work and effort. Look forward to the hoplite project! Cheers.
Thanks man much appreciated! Yes "To the Strongest" Rules - which worked perfectly, and all the players were mostly strangers (some family members etc). Glad that you enjoyed the project and thanks for your kind words!
5:02 This statement is a significant exaggeration and misrepresentation of historical events. "The Romans lost a lot of troops" = The loss of three complete legions, which was a severe blow to the Roman self-image and their superiority Here's a more accurate description of what happened after the Battle of Teutoburg Forest (Varusschlacht): 1. Roman retaliation: The Romans did launch retaliatory campaigns into Germania under Germanicus between 14-16 CE, but these were limited in scope and duration. 2. No total destruction: While these campaigns caused damage and casualties, they did not result in the destruction of all of Germania or the killing of everyone. 3. Limited objectives: The Roman expeditions were primarily punitive in nature, aimed at recovering lost standards and avenging the defeat, rather than attempting to conquer and occupy the entire region. 4. Withdrawal: After these campaigns, Emperor Tiberius ordered a withdrawal from Germania, effectively abandoning plans for long-term occupation east of the Rhine. 5. Long-term impact: The Battle of Teutoburg Forest actually led to the establishment of a more permanent frontier between the Roman Empire and Germanic territories, rather than resulting in the destruction of Germania. In summary, while the Romans did conduct retaliatory campaigns, they did not "destroy Germany and kill everyone." The actual historical events were far more nuanced, with long-lasting geopolitical consequences rather than total annihilation.
I did exaggerate in the video, but the point stands that the Romans crushed German resistance after battle and had their revenge. Including laying waste to a lot of German territory.
Great stuff, man. Glad that it went off well and the players had a lot of fun! It looked amazing on the table. I watched a lot of the recap videos looking for you guys, but didn't catch you guys. Looking forward to your next video rounding up the experience. Thumbs up!
Thanks so much! Yes somehow we missed the recaps and the judging (the judges literally did not view our game when they where supposed too)... I will chalk it down to us not yet being an established force at the convention. I don't think the organizers actually expected us to pull through with this project. Glad you enjoyed following the project!
@@TriariusWarGaming Ranger mentioned the same thing about the breakdown of the organizers to acknowledge the new bloods on the scene in his video. I must admit that you actually have gaming cons to go to!!! Our last tourney was almost 7 years ago. Historical wargaming desert here, man.
@@jvcpaints Damn, that is unfortunate. Maybe you gotta be the one to start up the convention scene?
The game looked epic.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Triarius, great recap to a great project. I look forward to following your 2026 project also. Little Wars is my hometown Chicago convention, let me know if you ever have the chance to visit.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed the project! Hopefully I will get out to Chicago one day!
amazing work
Thanks man!
Always impressed how people can paint a huge army , my problem is i can't stick to one project.
Thanks man. I'm definitely an ADHD wargaming butterfly, but having a set deadline and people depending on you definitely helps a lot LOL
hope you guys had a good game at the convention, I was watching footage of the halls people put in UA-cam to see if anyone caught your game
Thanks man! I noticed a brief clip of our game set up in a video but that guy called it "Hundred Years War" 🤔. I will have a full run down video up in a day or two with some footage. Some lessons learned for next year, but all in all the game was an amazing success that exceeded my expectations.
@@TriariusWarGaming that’s great! Looking forward to your commentary on how it went. It looked like the convention had a big turnout
Fantastic job at Historicon. You 3 did a great job. Thanks for rolling some Shadowdeep dice afterwards as well. Cheers.
Thanks so much man, and thanks for inviting us into the shadowdeep game, I had a blast playing, your GM'ing was awesome
Just wow. That looks really amazing. Honest question, though: How do you transport those? I think a simple "marching order" won't get them from A to B, wagons or not. ;)
For my stuff, I actually was able to fit the Romans and baggage into two large plastic bins, the Germans into three, and then the mats and terrain in another couple boxes. I put them into the bins roughly organized by how they would appear in the game, and it all fit very easily in the back of an SUV. Surprisingly, transportation was very easy! The key though I think is using large footprint storage bins with a low profile.
@@TriariusWarGaming Glad to hear it! Thanks and happy gaming!
Amazing work on such a large scope project...and with more to do! Well done. Already looking forward to the terrain update. I hope you can talk a little bit about the event and what you're excited to see and do there besides put on this awesome game of course.
Thanks man much appreciated! I will do a little update tomorrow and discuss the event, thanks for following along with the project!
Congrats on such a massive project successfully executed! Watching you and Ranger put this together has been a pleasure and inspiration.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed following along with this project!
Looks amazing, well done!
Thanks so much!
Great stuff! Huge armies, looks like a good game will be happening. Tons of awesome cool work.
Thanks so much!
Congratulations!
Thanks!
@@TriariusWarGaming Looking forward to seeing what the next project will be
@@Corvinuswargaming1444 Going to be doing some smaller projects after Historicon like pulling together some saga stuff. But all will be revealed soon!
@@TriariusWarGaming sounds great
You and Ranger have collected great looking armies. Well done both of you. 👍👍
Thanks so much man! Means a lot!
I love how you and Ranger both have built these gigantic armies, but your first reaction is to talk about what's left to add on. It just proves that a miniatures project is never done. 😆
Oh boy, that's the way it always goes in this hobby. Never enough and always another unit to add on and expand the army.
Dude you crushed it, you painted over 60% of the force that will be on the table!
I think Marius fought two big battles against the separate German tribes, one at Aquae sextiae and the other at Vercellae(?) That would also make a decent display game. How many figures have you painted? Very impressive armies.
For this project 1300 miniatures, lifetime I am not sure. Usually I do 200-400 a year over the past 5 years. 1300 in a year is kind of a one off thing lol
@@TriariusWarGaming That's commitment, did you paint anything else just as a break?
That is awesome! How long do you think this took you?
Thanks! I most of them July-December 2021, and then another round of painting February through April 2022 for these forces.
Amazing work so far. All coming together. Very impressive.
Thanks man! Much appreciated!
Nice progress! Thank you
Thanks!
you really have managed to do something pretty incredible here, huge respect and admiration for you and the rest of your team up
Thanks, much appreciated! Getting pretty anxious about pulling it all off, fingers crossed
Fine progress 👍
Thanks man! Much appreciated!
That's an impressive sight
Thanks!
this has been a really impressive project to watch!

Great work, looks awsome. This is such a big project, really looking forward to see more of this project. 👍
Thanks man! Trying to get everything wrapped up by the weekend!
Superb painting and basing, a very impressive army!!
Thanks so much!
Can you do a review of the victrix early saxons?
Yes I can do a review, got some ideas for that video, I can do that over this weekend.
Sorry for the delay on this video, I am working on it, will come out soon after Historicon.
Impressive dude 😁 cant wait to see all this, look forward to the next update
Thanks man! Much appreciated, updates coming soon!
WOW! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
Nothing like a deadline.... Best of luck and please don't burn yourself out! Would hate you to get to the con and not have the reserves to run the game so please do look after yourself! Best wishes :)
Thanks man! I think the biggest push is this week and then things should get easier after that!
Wow, you've been productive, well done!
Thanks! Yes been putting myself to work lol
You're a mad man! That many minis in 3 weeks and change?! Hats off to you, sir. I think the camp follower women in the carts would be good if you can get them in (this way the Romans can hear the lamentations of the women). Nice save on the cavalry figure with the broken foot and messed up sword.
I'm on my summer vacation so essentially treating this as my full time job. Worst case scenario painting through the night if needed. Honestly, the biggest thing is my upper back gets really tired working for too long.
Dwarf Fortress is great
Nothing like one your dwarves dying, turning into a malicious ghost and then driving your fortress insane. Or the classic water trap gone wrong leading to a mass flood death event.
@@TriariusWarGaming I built way too many fortresses over aquifers, leading to disaster LOL
