Hi Brad, from Sydney, I bought a paph. 2 he a rd ago, still same size, I decided to report and found no roots, but green leaves I put it in a bit of water to grow roots..it is ok or what you recommend me. I will try to send a picture of it. Many thanks for your advise.
I just lost four paphs.I potted the way you did but I realise it didn't suit my humid climate.so it didn't dry properly and roots were horrible and wet.I have one left, and I just repotted it with bark, charcoal and a little coconut.top off with moss.I think it's going to do great :)I only water once a week.
Marlina Basir Hi Marlina, sorry to hear about your loss. It wont be the humidity difference, my plants grow at anywhere from 85% -100% humidity all year in the greenhouse. Temps are from 85F+ highs to 53F lows. Sounds like just a bit to much water. They should be almost dry before rewatering, stick you finger down into the media, if it feels wet still or you are in doubt, leave it another day
hi! brad.thanku so much for sharing your knowledge.i learn a lot from you.im new to orchids.i live in india.in chennai.its hot and humid mostly. i got a phalaenopsis orchid a few months back.i changed the pot with bark medium.it was doing fine.and it has only 2 big leaves.but now im noticing one of the bigger leaf is turning yellow.i checked it..does not have any pest or any visible problem. do you think its trying to shed off its old leaf to get a brand new leaf? im worried because it has 2 leaves.please suggest.i would be waiting for your reply. thanking you sheetal
I have a question off topic of this video but could really use some advice. When i buy phalenopsis orchids with flowers and some flower buds that still have to open, some of the small ones end up shriveling up and drop from the flower stem for some reason. They are kept in good light and i water once a week. Also, how often should i water a phalenopsis that are carrying seed pods?
Shaun Bosch the buds turning yellow and falling off is called bud blast, it can happen to stressed, cold or recently moved orchids. the next time, the buds should be fine. Nothing to do with your watering.
Hey I've just gotten a new nepenthes but need to know if it needs a repotting and 1 question where did you get your nepenthes miranda i cant seem to find one on eBay ? Thanks -Sabian
Dear Brad, I love your videos. I have learned so much from you. I have a very small , young paphiopedilum henryanum that I purchased on ebay, and had it shipped from China. I have had it since April. Not much growth from this little guy, but he seems to be holding his own. I have him in a west facing window along with my Phaph's. I potted him in Fir Bark, and mist him every day. Can you give me any tips for keeping him healthy ? Thanks so much
My Paph insigne is the most boring orchid I've ever grown. 5 years of not growing at all. Repotted 3 times within those years, never did anything. Last year it started to die more. Now it is stagnant. I hope to revive it, but I may have bought a shocked plant that was treated poorly (since all the other ones from the same nursery grew when I went back and mine did nothing during the same period of time).
***** you may have a dud, it can happen. Grow it like a Cymbidium most years and half the time mine sit in water like a phrag and the roots just grow like crazy. This year, they all live in the greenhouse but last year I tested a pot of the orchid ooutside, Full summer sun all day in a 4' pot, went a bit greeny yellow but did just fine. kept it watered daily.... Now to cover my ass, if you try this, do it slowly as you plant, if grown under lights and indoors will be soft.
Oh... I'd been growing it with a wet/dry cycle, never like a phrag, and I never gave it a cool down, maybe that's the problem. I'll try out a few new things this year, as it is still alive, but barely. I'll grow it with my carnivorous plants but on it's own, and then let it go in the garage for a month or 2 perhaps (it's 10C day time and 5C night time there in the winter).
Hi Brad. Thank you for your video. I had to repot my Paphiopedilum Delenatii as a matter of urgency inasmuch as it started smelling like fungus. Schwerter sent it to me in old media...:( anyway, my main concern is that I only addded bark and sphagnum moss as I do not have perlite. Do you think this is enough? Would you be able to recommend any fertiliser with extra calcium? It is a bit of a way to the nearest beach from where I live to collect oyster shells... Many thanks!
Hi Brad, love your knowledge of orchids. Could you tell me what are the advantages and disadvantages with the outdoor green house. I have an indoor sunroom with plenty of windows which I can close off with french doors. Will this cause mold since I have humidifiers in the room? All knowledge you have would be helpful. Ii’m considering an outdoor greenhouse. Phil from Maryland USA.
Hi Brad, I grow indoors with grow lights, and only grow Multifloral Paphs. Right now I can't get a temp. fluctuation at night, I use a humidifier and a heater to get temps up beyond 70-degrees during the day. How can I get the temps down at night?
HI brad i have a question do you own some native philippine orchids? If you have please please feature them in your next video Im hoping for it please do it
Garrett Spring That is a good thing for you to think about, honestly my wife and I have really good jobs. She is a nurse and I sell Real-estate ( houses). I like to play around on UA-cam and have plants as a hobby but simple don't have the time to be packing up and shipping orders. Plus we have a tiny population here in Canada compared to you in the USA so it would be slow going and I can't ship Orchids and other plants across Country Boarders like to the USA. Crazy fact: Los Angeles has the same amount of people as all of Canada
Hi Brad. Love your videos. QQ- how do you remember all the details of our your orchids? Do you keep a log of when each orchid bloomed, how long you had it, etc? I only have 40 orchids, and I can't remember where each one came from , when it bloomed, etc., unless I have it on the tag. Any suggestions?
I have read that paphiopedilum needs a lot of calcium, what would be a good source of calcium? I see that you are using the same mix that you use for all orchids.......
Did you buy your crushed oyster shells? Or did you crush them yourself? I think my paphs might need the calcium. Thanks for all of your very informative videos!
Marilyn Hubbard Hi Marilyn, I tried to crush my own first... it was a pain in the @ss, messy and really didn't work . I now go down to my local farm store and they have crushed oyster shells for birds, like chickens and it is bulk and super cheap. $1 got me a big bag
After 3 years you got reply 😀😁😂 I agree with you, clay pots is the most suitable for slipper orchid - I used clay pots for my slipper orchid it's grew fabulously
Old fans die as part of the normal cycle. However, if you observe all them doing this or it starting in the new section which is the middle and not lower leaves it might be crown rot.
There is another video I just watched where the guy calls these Lad'ys Slipper Orchids and he also uses the word "papapedilum" then goes on to say that these plants have bulbs?! Not impressed! Your page and films are 100% the tops! many thanks
Thank you for a clear and informative demonstration.

Paphiopedilum delenatii doesn't like aditional calcium.

Hey brad. Really neat Paph.... I wanted to ask you why you don't start your own orchid business..? I am always thinking about it for my future...

***** That's interesting about the population of LA being the same as all of Canada. Wow!
Brad, Besides oyster shells what other source of calcium you can give to paphs?
have you ever looked at maxsea?
Educational, thanks!

Very informative, Brad. Thanks for all the how-to videos.

Did I saw you on "WFLA News Channel" ? really similar to one that do the language of signs. :)

Since orchid roots like a lot of aeration, why not plant them in a clay pot? Clay pots are much more porous than plastic ones.
After 3 years you got reply 😀😁😂 I agree with you, clay pots is the most suitable for slipper orchid - I used clay pots for my slipper orchid it's grew fabulously
Great job.....
ivy geerman thank you Ivy, this one was a very easy repotting, no trouble at all
Do lime stones work as well?
I have to re pot mine I bought. But I'm scared too....lol
BeautyMarked Orchids just don't bend the roots, they like to crack if you try
how can you tell if it's a male or female lady slipper paphiopedilum
testes
Why is my slippers leafs turning yellow
