Paphiopedilum care follow up; two years later I've learned a LOT!

- Yes Plant Lovers - Paphiopedilum Revisited! I made a video about this fabulous orchid, Paphiopedilum Duo de Citron, two years ago, and I've learned a WHOLE lot in the intervening years, and nearly lost a Paphiopedilum to root rot in the process. So let's revisit this particular orchid's care; what I've learned, what I've changed, and enjoy the fabulous bright yellow sequential blooms! And if you manage to get your Paphiopedilums to bloom every year in a similar climate to mine I'd LOVE to know your tips!!

This yellow Paph is beautiful! Reminds me on Paph primulinum, but the flowers from primulinum are smaller. But as bright yellow as your “citron”.

My paphs have ridiculously big root systems, last repotting I had to cut some out of the pot. The tip that helped me the most was from the Australian grower Nicky’s slippers who said put them in the smallest pot possible to fit their roots as they hate being overpotted , this was the turning point for me and now I am very successful with them ❤

My Paph Duo de Citron is in recovery, I can tell by your tag we got it from the same place. I slipped and fell while carrying it- it stayed on the floor while i was in the ED. I waited for HOURS in the ED to get a DX of twisted ankle. My dog and cats knocked it about while it was down there. It got stem rot. I lost 2 leaves then it started seeping a rust coloured sticky fluid. I figured it was a bacterial rot so......I crushed up a 100 mg penicillin tablet, used few grains of it and some 1/8 tsp cinnamon with some isopropyl etoh- made a poultice and covered the area of rot. That was 2 years ago it's alive, I am amazed it survived. It is finally back to about the size it was when I got it and was told it was 2 years away from blooming. I have 2 more years to go. I do believe that this IS one of those 2 year cycler, MY hope is getting them to produce multiple fans. Im also fairly sure Nicky told me it has.a slow growth habit and to expect blooms every 2 years. Part and parcel why I love the Phrags so much. Those mostly grow a new fan and bloom each season and require similar care.
Oh my LORD...what a story!!!!! I'm so glad YOU'RE ok! Yes - mine came from Nicky - I shall just have to learn to be patient and enjoy it every two years!

Lovely Paph, love the color. I'm glad to hear that you were able to save that other Paph with the root rot. Thank God for that one good root. I wasn't as lucky, by the time I noticed the problem, it had no roots. But....that wasn't the end of it. I figured what do I have to lose. I threw the pot and its contaminated soil out, cleaned the stub end of the paph removing all rot and dead leaves, sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide and then Neem for good measure. I repotted it in a peat and perlite mix and watered it in. Even without roots it was still growing new leaves as the older ones would slowly yellow and die. After a few months of this I pulled it out to see if anything was happening. Sigh...nothing, still a naked stub. This time before returning it to the pot and pushing it deeper into the mix, I dipped it in rooting powder. Several months later I saw the tip of a new root appear between its leaves. I carefully pushed it deeper into the soil to the point that the bottom pair of leaves were partially buried. Soon roots grew out from between the next pair of the leaves. The Paph is a much small plant than I started with, but it's alive and roots fill the pot. With orchids, never say die !!!

That is an amazing cross ❤ I believe you may be able to get it to bloom annually depending how the fans come in. My primulinum bloomed last year and the new growth is looking like it may bloom this year. Happy Growing and thank you for sharing!

I have Paph. Pinocchio, also a sequential bloomer, and have had a similar experience where it blooms for 5-6 months and doesn’t bloom the following year(s) despite putting out new growth. I had read about this blooming quirk on an orchid board years ago so I've been growing my paph 5+ years under the assumption that it's feast or famine with sequential bloomers. 🤷🏻♂️ Your Duo Citron is gorgeous. Such a cheerful color!
I've read that paphs prefer fresh media and can be repotted yearly. Not sure how true that is ( I haven't been diligent about repotting yearly).

Duo de Citron would more correctly translate to "pair of lemons" (two lemons would be deux citrons). Different Paphs have different growth and bloom patterns. Some of the hybrids are capable of blooming every year, some every other year, some every third year and some take up to five years between bloom cycles. I have a Paph Dollgoldi which I assumed was a two year cycle but it appears it will be three, since it was in bloom two years ago and no sign of a bud yet. Going to have to repot that one without a new growth coming I guess.

Hello! I was wondering if you could help me with an orchid related issue.. I've been accumulating quite the collection of orchids over the past months, both phlaenopsis and oncidiums. And i've watched most of your videos, and many others to try to educate myself on how to keep these beautiful plants alive and thriving. So naturally first thing i do when i purchase a new orchid, is that i repot them. I make sure to use an "airy medium" to not suffocate the roots, so i use bark. Not AS airy for the oncidiums, and i make sure to water them when they're almost dry. Though i feel like every orchid i've repotted so far just takes a turn for the worse, most of my oncidiums now are in ICU chambers now because all the roots have simply just died off after repotting.. I do always inspect the root system when i repot, and remove the ones that are obviously mushy and papery and dead. And I've also learnt that repotting does stress the orchid out to some extent and that it¨s n ormal so have some root loss after a repot, but surely not all of them or?? It's a little disheartening when my favorite plants just wither off and dehydrate after the repot.. Im hoping that the icu chamber with sphagmoss will rejuvenate them but surely it shouldnt have to end up like this with every oncidium i repot? Have you had similar experiences? Any tips to what I might be doing wrong? Thank you so much for your content so far! Hope you put out more great videos in the future.
Oh dear! Sorry to hear you're having trouble post repot! A few things I'd consider: best time to repot is whenever the particular orchid is putting on new growth which produces new roots, often that's spring but not necessarily. Second thing is you don't have to repot every new orchid if the medium looks good, the plant is healthy & has enough room, you know who potted it, it's in bloom, it's very hot weather, it's very cold weather etc. The other thing is to make sure the medium is not too wet, there is a tendency to over water something that's been repotted. Phalaenopsis you could repot at any time but when a flower spike has finished is often a good time. But you can repot orchids whenever you need to if there's no choice. And lastly the first watering after a repot I use a diluted solution of seaweed plant tonic, just a little post stress pick me up. Hope these suggestions help! Good luck!

Bought one with 3 plants and one blooming. I'm thinking of repot it to a bigger pot. Do you think should be good separate the plant or live them together? Do you think the one with flowers will bloom again? I want to put them in hydroponics with leca at the bottom and bark with sphagnum.
Hi there, you can split plants if they are big enough, I never have so I couldn't give any advice. Fans that have bloomed generally don't bloom again. Again I don't grow in hydroponics so couldn't help unfortunately. Good luck!

Help, I have a question.. My son's girlfriend has cut the spike off my Sequential bloomer Paphiopedilum . Will it EVER grow back ? If so do you have any idea of how long something like that could take ? I don't know who feels worse Her, Me or my Orchid . Thank You
Oh no!!! I'd be seeing a family counselor!!!😆😆 But yes, it will grow back. Mine blooms every two years so you'll just have to wait for it's next flowering cycle.
