I use a seam ripper with my crochet all the time, NOT!! Definitely some ridiculous items in that set. Was not put together by someone who crochets 😂 Thanks for a great review and being honest about how you feel about the set ❤
Hi Chantelle, great review👍. I remember way back when I first started to crochet being so excited to receive one of these types of sets, Like this set there where things I'd never use and loose handles too, after a while the rubber handles went so tacky I couldn't use them, then my 10 year journey of hook buying/trying began. It took me that long to find all my favourite crochet bits and pieces. A great question you had was "would I gift this to a crafting friend" My pick from this set would be the sewing in needles and case, for the life of me I seem to lose those the most😂.
Thanks for taking one for the team Chantelle. Wonderful review, very honest and balanced and I enjoyed your process thinking as you went through all the positives and negatives.
Love your honest review. I bought a cheap set of hooks from ebay a few years ago because it seemed like a "great deal!" The thing that bugged me the most was, as a knife holder, the metal didn't extend all the way to the end of the handle, and they would flex and bend in my palm. Did my head in. I wound up giving them away.
I find those sets are alright for entry level, complete beginner but once you find your love of crochet, would quickly outgrow. I totally agree there are so many items in that pack, that do not relate to crochet. You sit there as a beginner saying to yourself, 'what and how do I use this for crochet?', you don't know at that level that you don't use those items. I tend to recommend to a newbie, hook sets alone (like the Kmart $7.50 AUS set) rather than these 'complete' sets. Great review though, it is easy to get tempted by all the extra goodies for a relatively cheap price. I too am a tool snob like you 😍😉😂 and after all, we are all worth it 🤩
Good review. I never thought about the measuring tape being off. I'm going to check some of my other tape. I've only bought one set of hooks on line and was totally disappointed that I've never tried again I like to hold them in my hands before buying them.
Some of the cheaper tape measures look like inches compared to centimeters, but are actually Chinese Cun which is 1.312 imperial Inches or 3.333 centimeters.
Never used a seam ripper while crocheting. Have used them a bunch while sewing and seem to never be able to find one when I need one. Haven’t used a knitting point protector or the cable needles either. I bought a similar set from Amazon recently. It didn’t come with the odd things but looks similar and was around $20 too. The hooks are in solid and run the full length. The shaft is uniform. Their is a little resistance for the first couple of minutes then they smooth out. Can’t tell the difference with my clover now. Yoker was the brand it was from Amazon australia.
I use a seam ripper if I accidently sew a motif facing the wrong way, I use needle toppers sometimes to stop my hook snagging while in transit. Probably the only things I wouldn't use are the cheap scissors and the cable needles
Thanks, I have been shopping for a set of Clover-like hooks, and I don’t have to waste even the little bit of money that this cost. I will have to do more research. You are very even handed with your comments too, so I feel this is a very good review.
I bought and used a crochet hook set which I think is 100% same as these, mine came only with the hooks with no additional gadgets. They are fairly good in the beginning but after some use they bend, break and come apart. I think plain old metal hooks is mush better in my opinion. If you can afford clover or tulip they are definitely mush better and I totally agree that one good useable hook in a size that I need and use always is way mush better than all this.
Love this review! Sellers all over Ebay are hawking cheap crochet sets like this one as "Clover Amour" hooks 😤 Yes, I got fooled! But sent them back for a refund ... loving your detailed information about what good hooks should look like and how they perform. Excellent advice 👍 👌
I'm so sorry you got the rubbish ones, but very happy to hear you got a refund. I will say with all the issues Amazon has, they do make it easy for returns and refunds.
'Stay away from me', might relate to the pencil case having cactus images on the other side and so prickly ...a bit like ourselves at times 😆
I was thinking it referred to the cactus too.

I tried so hard to keep it on a balanced keel. It was a tough one.

@Fiberific thank you I never knew that
I have never used a seam ripper in crochet or needle protectors.

Wow ok. So I can send the seam ripper and toppers to you ;)
Never used a row counter likethat for crochet. It’s meant to go on a knitting needle.

Absolutely and thank you for sharing your experience with this style of hook.

I never even heard of needle covers for hooke
Sosors is a bummer. Cardboard tape measure would be bummer. And why would I want a seam ripper.
