What's your favorite crochet hook??
Straight Metal Hooks. It is what I started crocheting with and what I continue to use. The other ones look way to bulky for me. I want to know what the size of the hook is not a 5.5 mm thing!!
@@midnightfantasy74 haha! Thats how I feel when someone says a J hook! 🤣🤣
Susan Bates
I love susan bates but it seems like most people don't like that brand I just don't get why!
Yarnology's "luxury" crochet hooks from Hobby Lobby are my go-to. I've tried metal, I've tried rubber, I've tried plastic, but these are my go-to, and they're cheap, too. $2-$3/each.
So I took your advice and ordered a Clover Amour hook and I HAD to come back and thank you! It took a project I was struggling with due to snagging and just cuts through the yarn so smoothly that I was stunned! I went from fighting every puff stitch to just gliding through them. I loved it so much I'm now buying them as gifts for friends and family who crochet!
I have been battling puff stitches today! 😵💫 My stupid cheap hook keeps splitting the yarn despite not having tight tension, and I have a set of Amours is on the way now. Hopefully, they remedy the sitch.
@@missmishpotI found that they made a world of difference! I just received them in the mail yesterday. I’m in love! They go through yarn like butter. So oleasant to use ❤
The day I switched from a cheap amazon set to Clover Amour was the day I REALLY started enjoying crochet! They are the best. I bought one Tulip Etimo crochet hook to try it because the set is expensive. Nope. Clover is best ( in my opinion)
Very thorough description! Thanks! I learned some new ones to try. One thing I disagree with is that hooks with burrs that catch on yarn are good for beginners. What a turnoff for a newbie to keep catching their hook on their yarn and snagging the ply apart! I say newbies should buy one or two quality hooks and if they develop the love the art of crochet, buy a set.
Thanks for sharing your input! I agree that a great route for new crocheters is to purchase one or two great hooks, and then splurging for a set down the road as I chatted about in the video. I included the budget friendly hook sets for folks that may want a lot of hooks for a much lower cost, but wanted to give a warning on the quality. It's ultimately up to the individual what is most important to them quanity/budget vs. quality.
I’m so glad that you mention and show the Susan Bates bamboo handle hooks. I think you’re the first person I’ve seen that talked about them. These are my go to hooks when I start a project. I have the clover and etimo (I can’t spell that word) hooks which are super also
I agree, the bamboo hooks are definitely underrated!
I bought the Clover Amour as my first ergonomic set and do love them. However I have larger hands and they are a little short. What's crazy is that i can feel the little air opening at the bottom of the handle so i have to choke up further on the hook to not feel that. I also tried We Crochet hooks which are a great length and price but some of the handles have noticeable seams. I used some fine sandpaper and that made all the difference.
Thank you so much for sharing, and for the tips!
I'm a Prym girl myself. Never used anything else since I got my first one of them. Love their ergonomic line.
Adding these to my wishlist!
Susan Bates in line hooks are my favorite.
Love it!
I bought a cheap Amazon set to start learning. I now know them to be an Amour dupe. I’ve bought one Amour hook in a 3mm and its soooo much smoother. A really good hook. However, I hadn’t actually noticed they are a bit small in my larger hands until someone else said it. So I’m going to be looking for something with a longer handle especially if I’m going to be doing a big project.
I purchased a dupe of the Clover hooks from Amazon for less than $20 dollars. I’ve enjoyed them very much and very comfortable to use. My set also came with stitch markers and few yarn needles.
I love it! Thank you so much for sharing!❤️
What a terrific, helpful video! I’m so glad YT recommended it to me…thank you so very much! I’m still a beginner and am slowly trying out hooks; right now, the Furls streamline resin are my favorite…I feel like they’re just gorgeous and glorious to work with! Regardless, thanks again and happiest new year to you and yours! ☺️🧶🫶🏻
So it was helpful! and Happy to New Year to you as well! ❤
I bought something like that last set when I started crocheting last year and I still like them EXCEPT the numbers rub off so you're like, "what size is this?" So be sure any hook you by has the size etched into the plastic or metal.
I’m a beginner, and I sort of stumbled upon the Clover Amour hooks because that is what one of my local yarn stores had in stock and I love them! Of course, I only have the Knitter’s Pride Waves hooks (just a bit too short!) and the all metal ones to compare them to, but I’m happy with the 2.25 mm hook I’ve used so far. I know that’s a tiny size to start with, but it helped me get gauge, so there’s that. 🤷🏾♂️
So glad you found hooks that you love!💕
I’m a Susan Bates girl. I have 100s of hooks but I always go back to my SB
The tried and true!
I agree about the furls being heavy but they are beautiful and I enjoy using them on straight rows like scarves. Thanks for sharing I have just ordered the Boye hooks from Amazon, looking forward to using them . Best wishes from South Australia
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy them!
I agree that I need the more stabilization. I do use the tulips hooks until I get to the bigger sizes then over to my clover plastic! Thanks for the live enjoyed it.
Tulips are on my wishlist, I've heard wonderful things about them. And thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video ☺
Do tulips go over 6mm in metal?!?! Because I will buy them immediately 😅
I use Tulip Etimo Red! ❤ they glide like butter and look so beautiful! I’ve tried furls but my hand hurts when i use them. Probably cause of how i hold it
Tulip Etimo are my favourite too ❤
Thanks for sharing!! I need to try those!
I was at a Hobby Lobby this past weekend and saw 2 sets of their house-brand ergonomic crochet hooks. There was 1 set for $5.99 (no case), and another set for $9.99, I think (with a case, and possibly slightly nicer handles). I have the Clover Amours, including the larger hooks with the resin hook tips (but not the steel-hook sizes). I also have an ergonomic set of hooks made by Athena's Elements, which I bought on Amazon a couple of years ago for $15 (a Prime Day special). They're a good travel set of hooks, when I don't want to risk losing a more expensive hook. I have plenty of bamboo hooks (fairly inexpensive on Amazon, even in larger sizes). My favorite hooks at the moment, though, are a set of wood hooks I got from Laurel Hill a couple of Christmases ago. They're nearly as light as the bamboo hooks, and very smooth (never need sanding, as do cheap bamboo hooks occasionally).
I find the Clover Soft Touch hooks to be too short to fit comfortably in my hand, too. I haven't (yet) tried that fancy hook which you said was too short for you.
As to Furls, although I don't own any of their Odyssey hooks yet, I do have 1 Candy Shop hook (a Mother's Day present a few years ago) and a LOT of their Streamline hooks (both wood and resin versions). I find that switching among the different types of hooks I own (including the Furls Streamlines) helps to reduce hand fatigue, as switching helps to prevent my hand being bent in exactly the same way all the time.
I have an all gold coloured set of clover but with a plastic handle instead of the rubber (just a small rubber oval inlayed at the top of the handle where my fingers and thumb sit). I love this set of mine. I used the Boye ergonomic ones before my friend bought me the clover set. I still kept my Boye hooks for when I can’t find the clover one in a certain size, or for friends to use if I’m teaching them.
I have found that the few times I do a project requiring a 7mm or higher I tend to end up grabbing my old straight metal once because I find handled one feel like their working area is to short for the yarn or stitched I’m doing.
Yes, I agree that the working area on the larger Boye hooks has less work area. And I need to try the gold clovers, I see them a lot but have never picked one up!
I have one clover soft touch and I just cannot for the life of me seem to yet comfortable on that handle but really want to!!!!
Have you ever tried SUSAN BATES crochet hooks? I have been crocheting since the 70's . They are all I use. They have a deeper hook that keeps the yarn on the hook better. They come with the ergonomic handles too
Yes! I love that you've been using them since the 70s! ❤️ My favorite are the Susan Bates Bamboo handle hooks!
I've been crocheting for a few years & now I'm looking to get an ergonomic hook, especially for the amigurumi (3.5 hook) I do. Having to do tight stitches takes time & can end up being tiring. This video has been helpful. So far I'm considering clover amour. Right now I just use the basic boye hooks. Does an ergonomic hook help you crochet faster?
The ergonomic ones are definitely more comfortable to grip, so while I can’t necessarily say that they make me crochet faster, the grip makes the hook more comfortable to hold, and can help hold off fatiguing. I highly recommend trying out one before getting the set to make sure you love the fit first though! I hope this helps! ❤️
How do you tried to look crochet hooks? Clovers were my favorite until I got my tulips. I have very small hand and the tulips seem to fit me better. They are the folks I generally reach for. I keep each of my hooks with their sets, and don’t leave them in projects. That way they don’t get lost. I lose things all the time. It seems I’m always looking for something.
Thanks for a well done video, I enjoyed it. Like you, it doesn’t seem to matter to me which type of book I use, either time works well for me. Just so you know, I think pearls no longer sells the odyssey. Whoever made them for them stop making them. I have four, and, like you, don’t reach for them all that often. However, the colors are gorgeous and I like to display them.
Inlines for life. I can't stand Boye hooks or tapered ones in general. I actually don't understand how they're even considered useful, they just slow down your crochet flow by getting caught on the loops. I can use clover style hook heads but they still slow me down!
Susan Bates is the best, and the only Furl hook I own I actually carved out a thumb rest in the acrylic haha 😂
Haha I love it! And its so interesting how we all have different preferences!
I love Clover hooks! Susan Bates is pretty good; used to use them exclusively but I find the ones at the store now are kinda shaped differently than the set I bought and I don’t like the new ones. Hate, hate, hate Boye hooks. They always split my yarn. Plus, my rubber handle came loose and was moving around as I crocheted. Furls are okay in my books, I find them better for done projects than others which is weird.
I also love Tulip hooks and Lykke hooks. I noticed you didn’t mention any wood hooks, I like them personally.
Thank you so much for sharing! Tulips are on my list to try next, and I haven't yet tried wooden ones!
Susan bates Luxite plastic crochet hook is the plain white one. I found it on Amazon for $5
Thanks for the info!
I love my Clover Amour but it does have one drawback for me. I have the hardest time seeing the size but that might be a defect in mine. I wish Clover had the size of the hook printed on the end like Amazon without rubbing off.
I get that! it is printed super small!
I'm a clover amour girlie! Because when I started Crocheting my fibro pain couldnt handle the boye no ergonomics handle. I thought it would be a GREAT idea to get an Amazon set (like the highest rated one that isn't brand name) and was met with shards of metal in my fingers. The day I got the Amazon ones in the mail was the same day I then went to the store upset and injured and got my clover amours in 4mm and 6mm! Just get your most used size in a good quality hook. I really wish the amours had metal hooks into 7, 8 and 9mm. Hate that the highest is like y or 6.5 before it switches to acrylics which just do snap more. I really want to try furls, tulip etimo and prym. All because they're preeeeetttttty!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! And I'm so sorry to hear about the Amazon hooks! ❤️
omg you're the first person I've seen mention this. Did you struggle with tension? I feel like my dexterity is so off with the pain, I will check out those hooks for sure. Any other tips for a starter?
I made myself a crochet hook roll with pockets for my hooks now i don't mislay them. I use straight metal hooks never tried any other sort most are aero
I love that idea!
For myself I think a person’s hook favorite depends on how the hook is held-knife or pencil hold. I hold my hook like a pencil. That is why the Furls hook or thick handle hooks don’t work for me. It would be interesting to watch a review of favorite hooks from a person who holds the hook like a pencil. Thank you for this review.
Thank you for sharing your insight!
Just a heads up the odyssey furls hooks are no longer available.
Yes, I saw that sadly right after put the video up 😭
What’s a seam on a crochet hook? I just bought the 5.0 H hook from clover and I’m still getting used it! Just followed too!
Thank you so much for following along! And on some rubber handled crochet hooks there's a seam in the rubber. If your hook has a rubber seam on it, you'll know it! 🤣 The clovers don't!
I dislike the Boye hooks so much that I will never buy them again. I bought a set and just about every one of the hooks were misplaced or crooked from the rubber handle. I had to pull the hook out of the handle and straighten it, then glue it back.
Oh no! Thanks for sharing your experience.
those are no longer for sale they discontinued them i saw the website
Yes the furls odyssey hooks were discontinued around the same time I posted this video 😭
I love the curls hooks they’re just too expensive so I only have 1 a 5mm my most usd hook. Xxxx
A splurge for sure!
MyDarnYarn hooks changed my life. Seriously. Serious hand cramping and pain completely gone. A huge investment until you look at it as an investment. It’s art, but more importantly, it allows me to crochet for hours upon hours pain free.
I had never heard of those before. Just checked them out and those are beautiful hooks! Thanks so much for sharing. These might need to be another hook to add to my wishlist! ❤
