I come to Donut Media for two reasons: 1. James Pumphry. Enough said. 2. Shows like this that actually teach me something about cars and trucks that I didn't know before. I always end a video having learned something totally new and you have my appreciation for that.
I can't believe you missed the #1 reason for solid axles: more vertical articulation than an independent suspension. You sacrifice ride quality for it.
No. There is zero sacrifice in ride quality if you understand suspension geometry, shackle length and angle, spring rate, spring and spring pack shape and design. Coils do not ride better than leaves because they are coils. The spring rate is the spring rate, a stiffer spring will have a stiffer ride, coil or leaf is irrelevant.
This also has nothing to do with the video that is about solid axle Jeeps. Coils do not offer better ride, they do not offer better articulation, nor do they offer better travel. Those variables are controlled by the spring design (number of elements, material, thickness, taper, end element design...) not the spring type. This commonly believed myth is right up there with inflating your tires to the pressure listed on the sidewall.

Great video. I just wanted to add a few things. The reason for bump steer is when the axle moves in a different arc when compared to the drag link. The way that Jeep engineered it out, was by making the panhard bar the same length, and mounting it parallel to the drag link. This ensures that the axle always moves on the same arc as the steering.
Just take it easy youl be fine. My driver didnt even take me on the highway. Fastest we went was 25mph. He straight up told me he would pass me ans wanted to make it quick because he wanted to eat lunch lol
Due to the Bronco, Jeep is worried about reduction in sales, especially since the market is already troublesome as it is. That is why they dropped the V8 version the same day as the Bronco reveal, to try and steal some thunder. Which I find kind of petty, but business is business I guess. I love the customizable qualities of the jeep due to their deep history and aftermarket potential. But I feel Bronco will rapidly close the gap in that regard.
As someone who was about to buy a Wrangler, but then discovered the upcoming Bronco. yeah, Jeep should be worried, the Rubicon suddenly has real competition. You can say it's untested, fine, but spec-wise it's toe to toe (better in a few places) and likely to be more reasonably priced.
I think a big question is reliability, Jeep has a history of being unreliable, especially after being bought out by Fiat. Ford has had some troubles with reliability too, but not nearly as much as Jeep as of late.
@@thumbtak 100%. I'm glad you brought this up because I have had multiple friends that had jeeps that said they wanted to get rid of them as quickly as possible. Not because they are bad cars....when they work. Ford has been doing a lot of research into these designs and have devoted more effort into their remaining models due to their elimination of everything except their trucks, SUVs, and the Mustang. I feel the full monetary giant that is Ford R&D team is trying to make the Bronco come out with a bang. I feel a V8 or upgraded version may not be to far off either.
This guy’s going all in depth about how the Jeep Engineers designed the front suspension when in reality they just copied the 13 year old XJ’s suspension.
@@TexasRedneck uh, no. Jeep never did a factory radius arm suspension. They did parallel 4 links. There are plenty of aftermarket radius long arm suspensions out there, but not from the factory.
Jeep Wrangler TJ is the Goldie Locks of wranglers. Jeff Russell amc parts were still widely used, Jeep grand wagoneers used their engines into 93 until Chrysler started putting newer fuel injection 4.7 liters. But with the tj many parts in the 4 liter straight 6 are the same amc designs until they started using the newer crappy v6s in the jks
@@xiSkiGuy AMC designed the Grand Cherokee (ZJ) starting in 1985. The Grand Cherokee has the exact same suspension components under it that were used in the TJ.
@@Bedpost88 And they started the XJ long before that. The original coil 4 link started in the front on that one . I started working at JTE (Jeep Truck Engineering) in early 89 as a chassis designer on the Viper which was developed in the same building. Very cool seeing the conception of the TJ and ZJ in the mock up area. Even the WJ introduced in 99 had it roots in AMC, the 4.7 was also conceived by AMC. The mighty V10 has AMC roots in it also, the front mounted gerotor oil pump was a concept used by AMC on it's V8 engines.
What's meant is Jeep was still using AMC designed/spec'ed parts; like engines, axles, brakes, wheels etc. Parts that came into use by Chrysler when they bought out AMC. It does't mean the parts were all built in the early 80s when AMC still ran Jeep.

I won’t deny that coils are definitely great to have. However, the issues you talk about with leafs are pretty easy to fix with components such as upgraded shackles, anti wrap bars, and numerous companies that develop leafs with excellent articulation and spring rates for whatever application you may need. Coils are great but leafs can be great too if you know what your doing. Besides I just really love YJs lol

I'm happy to say at 60 I've entered the jeep community again as I've purchased an 03 TJ at 111k miles and never been on a trail of any type. 8k, and hope the CJ will let me rest.
I think the Jeep is going to have a real run for its money with the new Bronco. That Bronco is looking really temping, and I’m not even a big Ford guy or anything
IndianaJoe0321 Maybe, it’s hard to say sometimes with a brand new product. Recent refresh of the explorer for example brought over a ton of mechanical issues that the previous model didn’t have. But the thing the Bronco has going for it is that it uses parts from other models. Time will tell!
Excellent points, @@PizzaParkersGarage. In my mind I was actually framing my comment through the lens of Fiat ... since the newer Jeeps are under Fiat management, they are extremely unreliable.
Personally, my experience with the early 86 cj7s by amc with a straight 6 258 engine with a manual transmission are the best. We own the early models by amc which had about 2000 made before they were bought out in 86. We even put this jeep up against a 2000 wrangler and a 2017 wrangler and it wins every time.
Great explanation! i love the TJ but i am a YJ fan boy. Being born 3 years after the final production of the YJ, I am younger than my vehicle. The leaf springs are one of the most simple set ups i have ever worked on. I prefer my YJ because i dont need trackbars and what not. rough ride roots out the weak.
I bought a 2005 Wrangler brand new, and in all that time, it has never been off-road. I bought it because of the very reliable 4.0 engine, and the convertible top.

Fuckin hell do I miss my Jeep. It was an ‘09 JK and was an insurance write-off from a moose accident here in Newfoundland (Canada). I was 11 when we got it and was the first big project me and my father worked on together; restorin the damn thing and all. By the time I was 17 and had gotten my novice license. He handed me the keys to it and let me rip. I’d spend hours and days just out muddin in it and occasionally gettin stuck, but to be honest, that’s the best part. One time we had 4 jeeps stuck a couple clicks from the nearest dirt road. It was mid February and was a nice and icy -18 degrees Celsius out. We were out until 3am in this frozen bog with nothin but axes, tree bows and paracord, as our winches were damn well shagged. But the point is that was the fun in owning a Jeep; gettin into all sorts of stupid situations and seein how one can cleverly get out. Anyways it wasn’t long after I graduated and went to university where I had to retire the beauty and go for a Jetta TDI as I was driving over 75km a day back and forth for my education and work. Still miss that beast though. If you have a wrangler, cherish it, take care of it, and for God’s sake take it off roaring from time to time. Their original purpose was for war after all.

I'll use it for 3 years. Drop 3 Grand on paint job. And I'll sell it for 12 Grand all day long.✌👍
But our willys jeeps were not better than the German vehicles. We came to the war late. And it wasn’t easy. They had a unimog. That should be enough. And the schwim wagon would leave them to the shallows.

As I eat lunch in my Jeep TJ. Awesome

Shame on you pal..
Jeep will also have the hybrid electric model too
Ford has nothing on the Jeep Wrangler. The modern Bronco has yet to even be tested.
Agree
Let's not forget he showed a pic of a 4 link(trailing arm) when the suspension is actually a radius arm design.
@@TexasRedneck uh, no. Jeep never did a factory radius arm suspension. They did parallel 4 links. There are plenty of aftermarket radius long arm suspensions out there, but not from the factory.
@@HomebrewHorsepower you are correct, I was thinking of the aftermarket kits. They still showed the wrong suspension.

"TJ is the last one made with AMC parts"
Shows chart showing it's actually the second full generation made by Chrysler... uh....
Right. AMC was defunct in 1988. I’m not sure what AMC parts were being used by Chrysler 9 years later. Are we counting the AMC developed 4.0 I6?
