Rainbow Lattice was a totally new gemstone for us! How about you? Would you like us to feature more obscure gems?
Have you done Oregon sunstone that would be fun
I have a very tiny cab of Rainbow lattice. Under the loupe, it looks amazing! I will save up to get a bigger one with a more noticeable lattice pattern.
Feature more obscure gems. It's exciting and informative!
Ya , and yes .
Yes!! I love it! Live the show and my 7 year old daughter watches with me all the time. Keep it going!!!❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥
I know you've done a video on pleochroism, but bringing in a polarizing filter and showing a wider variety (axinite, andalusite, cordierite of course, epidote, enstatite, kornerupine, tanzanite, all show quite dramatic shifts in hand samples with polarized light and there are plenty I didn't mention) would be very cool.
Wow thought I'd seen every type of moonstone 🌙 Dude must have been thrilled to discover a NEW gemstone that hadn't been classified before. Sure past civilizations may have seen it but it's been hidden from our current generations for some time!
Rainbow Lattice is soooo absolutely gorgeous and Ive actually been looking to get some pieces recently!! I love hearing the stories behind mineral discovery and you guys never disappoint!
I have found a small piece of "common moonstone" feldspar that has specks of hematite in it with flashy colors on them, and also growth lines from the crystal formation through the whole stone. And it has the chatoyant effect from the multiple different kinds of feldspar layers and it is about a 6 in strength on a scale of 1 to 10.
I have also found some grey-purple moonstone that is almost a 10 in strength of schiller effect that has enough perfect material in it to cut a flawless 5 carat stone.
I have found some that actually look more interesting because of growth line patterns and schiller and inclusions, some looking even better than my perfect grey-purple Moonstone.
All of these found in rubble rock used to fill in the garden plots in my neighborhood. Feldspar makes up most of Earth's crust so I guess it really isn't that surprising I could find a $100 dollar stone in a garden in Georgia, just laying around.
Edit: I got towards the end of the video and the moonstone with orthoclase inclusions looks EXACTLY like the feldspar I find, except I have greyish-blue pieces and white pieces like those, too.
Thanks for sharing your story! I have some garden rock bags and now I’m hoping I can find a nice specimen myself.
@@UnDefinedLegacy I think it has more to do with where the gravel originated from, it definitely wasn't Georgia USA I don't think.
The gravel I look through has come from a river or water source and the rocks are all tumbled and waterworn and there is a lot of quartz, agate, and chalecedony mixed in with the moonstone feldspar (of which most of it is just brown and completely opaque with a brown sheen on two sides).
I am almost certain I have also found either a white sapphire, white topaz, or white beryl with only one flat crack through it which is about 20 carats. I have also found a lot of facetable smoky quartz of large sizes in there too. I have a 40 carat smoky quartz pebble that is flawless and dark grey/yellow.
You would be surprised what you can find in some places if you know a lot about gemstones and minerals and geology.
Never knew this existed and I now need a specimen
Feldspar has so many variants and different gemstones within it's species, it is probably the most varied and complicated type of stone on Earth.
A video about solid solution series like the feldspars, garnets, apatites, etc. would be cool, very interesting chemistry
@@ExsoLam Feldspar and feldspathoids do not include garnets nor apatites, if that is what you are saying.
There are around 10 different main types of feldspar and each have their own properties. Like for instance a common moonstone (grey, white, etc with a schiller effect due to layering) will have a stronger schiller effect or a weaker schiller effect depending on the types of feldspars that are stacked on top of one another. That is just one of many examples, and one category of many categories.
It is a more varied mineral/gemstone species than anything else I have seen including Quartz. Actually Quartz and Feldspar are probably tied together when it comes to variety. The two most vast and varied gemstone species I have ever seen in my 20 years of rockhounding and gem collecting.
@@Nervii_Champion Wasn't at all what I was saying. The feldspar minerals include several solid solution series. As do garnets. As do apatite minerals like vanadinite, mimetite, and pyromorphite.
Everything you said I agree with though, I love the huge variety of feldspars.
@@ExsoLam Same man, Feldspars are in my top 5 favorites (if I really had to choose, I like all gemstones that are hard enough to wear in jewelry)
Like Tourmaline is just Tourmaline, with different colors and inclusions that make Cat's Eye Tourmaline. Same with Beryl. Beryl also includes Chrysoberyl (Cat's Eye, Alexandrite) and also Pezzottaite though if I am not mistaken, so Beryls and Chrysoberyls have more variety than Tourmaline but still nowhere NEAR as much variety as Quartz and Feldspar.
That is why I like Quartz and Feldspar and why both are in my top 5. I do like Corundum too Star Rubies and Star Sapphires are amazing. But still, there is only one type of Corundum, Tourmaline, Spinel, Garnet, whatever. There are probably over 100 different types of Quartz based gemstones and probably over 50 different types of Feldspars.
Now you can really see the scale of what I mean.
I have a few small pieces of Rainbow Lattice Sunstone and that chunk you pulled out of the box is just jawdropping.
Just, wow 💎♥️
Yeah, it was super cool to hold!
Wow, I’ve not heard of this before, I first thought it was Labradorite. Absolutely beautiful. Jeez, the guy named two of the minerals himself. Wow!
These gems are amazing! Each piece is so unique and beautiful.
They are!
WOW! Rainbow Lattice is just GORGEOUS!!!!!!!

Very cool to see and hear the guy who discovered this material, always been a favorite of mine.
The Rainbow Lattice is simply stunning!! I love moonstone and I would love to own this very special and rare variety of it.
I am proud to know Darren, hes an amazing man, can cut, polish and value anything.
Hasnt got a bad bone in his body.
100% honest, as in he wont touch your material if its no good.
He gave me a tray of Emeralds to hold once, as in a million bucks worth, turned his back on me, I will never forget his trust.
Darren can cut anything, I am proud to know him. 50 years in this game, no one has a bad word. Know him if you can, these blokes are dying out.
Loved hearing the details about all the variety in the formations. Definitely wanna get some on my bench asap 🥵🥵
Minerals changing its environment is exactly how the Spaniards used to locate gold 🤩

Natalie would've totally loved bein' on this episode. She loves her jewelry!
I'm terrified of spiders, so I've sworn I would never go to Australia (and a few other places). For the chance to visit this mine site and help collect samples, I would face my fear!
wowww
Love
I also have a single lump of a clear red rubies but it's small the size of a pomegranate seed. If I sell it, how much can it sell for?
Not much.
Dude I want that
Did I understand that right? The rainbow lattice is caused by hematite that's no longer there, so it's just like a gap in the stone?
The lattice is caused by magnetite that tried to form 3 dimensional octahedrons but instead got stuck and flattened between layers of feldspar.
@@gems Ok, and it only gets the rainbow effect once it oxidizes, right?
Right!
I'm not into jewelry at all... this is super fascinating though...
I like leaning geam stones
Wow i like the f out of that. Amazing.
Make another rainbow lattice video 🎉
We'd love to!
