Watch This Before You Mount Your Own Outboard, Motor is Too Low

  • This is the first time I've mounted my own motor and I did it just like the directions said to do it. Took it out and ran it to break it in and experienced some problems. I now know the fix (Jack plate and stabilizer), but I have to admit, this was super frustrating. I'll have to take the cables off the motor (Steering, throttle, and gear), sounds like no big issue, however, I'll have to take the bottom off the motor, take off the steering arm, and then get help lifting it. Plus, I put 5200 on the bolts, so I had to do use some heavy elbow grease. Save yourself the time I'm spending and watch the video, understand how to stay away from my problems.

    You did better than a lot. Low for power, high for speed, but making your cav plate level with water flow (bottom of the boat). Use your jacking plate to adjust from there. Happy boating.

    I was having the same problem yesterday with a 2stroke 8hp, so I added a one inch chunk of rubber flooring the same width as the transom and it completely solved the water coming over the stern. According to the Suzuki manual the transom was already at the specified height of 15", but it definitely wasn't working regardless of trim.

    Glad you got it figured out. I have a 1542 side console jon boat with a 20" transom and a 2021 suzuki 30 hp with 20" shaft. Cavitation plate still sits about 2" below the bottom of the boat. I wonder if it would be worth installing a jack plate. That skiff looks fun!

    17” transom needs a short shaft. For some reason short shaft ‘supposedly’ is 15” but they truly measure 17”. I always had to use a 2” spacer on top of my transom for best performance. I work on small short shaft outboards so when I rebuilt my transom, I made it 17” deep and now it’s perfect for short shaft motors.. Hope this helps somebody some day.

    I'm having all sorts of issues, same thing. What is your top speed? I have the Carolina Skiff 1455 DLX w/ a Honda BF 30 and top speed is only 20 mph. It's a 10x8 SS 3 blade which is way under what is recommended, and when I actually use what is recommended, I can't even plane out. Confirmed no engine issues, compression is good, runs smooth. Cavitation plate APPEARS to be where it needs to be but I'm experiencing all the issues that one would get if it was too low. PM me pls, I could really use some help here.

    It`s strange that the boat companies make their boats like that when motors are pretty much standard in tail length. Even on my jon boat I had to raise the motor up 2 inchs.

  • @westbayoutdoors123
    @westbayoutdoors123 2 роки тому +5

    Okay, I'll be the buttwad. If you need to raise your 20" shaft motor by 6" to get it right, you have the wrong motor.

    • @outdoorheretic8232
      @outdoorheretic8232  2 роки тому +1

      LOL, you're not a buttwad...well, maybe not yet! LOL I agree, but here's the skinny, I measured the transom right, listened to all the internet experts and everything said long shaft...moral of the story, a short shaft could have worked. BUT, I found a way to keep it, make it work and engine runs great.

      @@outdoorheretic8232 With the short shaft you have zero adjustability-with the long shaft you have plenty. A friend has a 17' john boat with a 17" transom, had a long shaft from when her husband built the boat for her. When she replaced the outboard recently the dealer insisted she need the short shaft 40hp Suzuki and jackplate.
      It's mounted so the cavitation plate is even with the hull, that's not the problem. The problem is when lowered on the lift before any passengers even board, the outboard cowling seal at the back of the outboard is even with the surface of the water. Adding fishing weight and two people it's 2-3" below the surface. There's been no leakage, she's not concerned about it, and this boat sees only freshwater so it is as it is. She has a KW on trailer for the saltwater.
      With your long shaft you've adjustability, could even box in your transom if need be and still have that extra adjustability.

    *anti-ventilation plate* On most boats you're right though, you need the AV plate level with the hull, usually +/- 1" there are certain hull designs that will change that though, and the more setback you have, the higher you can make it. I have a 17' boat with a tiller Yamaha 40, 8" set back and mine is like 3/4" higher than the hull....every boat is different

    is theres two different long shaft motors ones 20” ones 25” which one did you get? Ask because your transom you say is 17” but yet motor is around 6” to low and your motor looks long as in way to long most ( salt water type boats) not all have a 25” transom why theres a 25” shaft motor. but even at 17” you still probably need a short shaft really depends on the hull design my jon boat has a 16” transom runs out perfect with a short shaft and i raised it-a inch to put cap plate just above hull bottom so transom is more or less 17” same as yours a true long shaft transom is 21” also to consider is lower unit size a 50hp is much bigger then a 25hp whats your boat rated for if its rated for a much bigger motor and you slap on a smaller one can cause problems with motor height even tho both are same shaft length and with cap plate you want it equal to the bottom or just above never below

    Being resistant to the laws of physics is dumb dude. The weight in the front of the boat will greatly improve your performance. You can’t outsmart the laws of physics. Nice engine though.

    • @rodhurst5831
      @rodhurst5831 Рік тому

      I’m with you, not sure why he doesn’t want weight in the front. I’ve got a heavy 14’ with a short 25 Yamaha. I took the time and effort to distribute my weight ( two gas tanks, big deep cycle battery, trolling motor) up front and it works great. My cav plate is 21/4” lower than the boat bottom. I did just buy a CMC pt 35 off amazon. Took a chance on a return because it was affordable ( brand new is not! ) but the deal was to good, the hydraulic cylinder was no good that’s why it was returned, Amazon just resold the crap to me so no power tilt/trim for me.
