Let John Crews explain to you how and why to adjust your jack plate height to maximize performance of your bass boat. John has over 20 years experience as a professional bass angler to draw from for his conclusions. John’s notes are under the impression you have the right pitch prop. Prop pitch is a whole other video topic. Bass Cat Boats, Mercury Outboards, and TH Marine Atlas jack plates are what John uses in the video and on your.

Best video I’ve seen on jackplates. Great!
good info John, thanks, just watched your other 101 driving video and was wondering about Jack plate height then saw this video
great video John , that explained allot to me .
Great video thank you very much. So helpful
Great video!
Thanks, and well done. New subscriber here!🙂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great video, awesome Job,
One of the best explanations I have come across yet. Thanks
My wife and I just bought a brand new 2022 Z20 nitro. It has a 12 inch atlas jack plate. Very informative video.
Thank you good luck fishing in 2022
Be safe and have fun!
Thanks for the info saved me a lot of time and aggravation
4 blade props give you least amount of plane time under load in shallow water with the jack plate up in considerable calm conditions. 3 blade props give you longer plane time in every condition regardless of jack plate position but will give you more mph. The higher the pitch number the more speed, the lower the pitch number less bow rise which will result in faster plane time but at the sacrifice of speed.
Thanks John! I'm not going to lie, the drums kicking in at the 6:48 mark scared the crap out of me with headphones on. haha
Thanks...that explains it!
I have a Scout 162SF/60hp Yamaha and fish The Indian River Lagoon System, Merritt Island, FL. I'm thinking a 4" will be fine for me. My only interest is fishing shallow water. I also have a kayak for those places a boat can't go and hoping to open those locations up some with a jack plate. T-H Marine Mini. electric. Very informative video. Thx for taking the time to make it. Fish on!
I fish mosquito lagoon and run a 5” Jack plate
Thank you!
Estou cursando Construção Naval na Fatec de Jahu-sp, gostei muito do vídeo!
Good job!
Thanks John , I have the same Jack Plate on my Range 520 VX , When I have a co Angler and the live wells filled up ,it realy slow to get on Plane ,any suggestions ?
Very well explained, thank you. Best explaination of bass boating I've seen yet
fantastisch video
Thank you for sharing the information. I will keep my boat at a moderate speed on lakes and not create hugh waves that interfere with other anglers fishing efforts.
Nice video. Looks impressive the use of a jack plate on a bass boat but how beneficiary is it for a Plexiglas, 22feet, 200bhp boat, especially on a choppy sea?
Thx! I'm in the process of choosing and purchasing a jack plate. Does saltwater influence choosing a jack plate or are they all built for use in saltwater? Pretty sure they are but doesn't hurt to ask!
Thx man!

the hub of the prop is all the same unless you have a over the hub exhaust. predator 4 blades were over the hub prop. and, of course the old chopper prop is an full over the hub exhaust. through hub exhaust, the hub is fits your lower unit barrel. now you can have different length blades, and they can also have longer rake. all of this will factor into how that prop will take off. more blade and rake will take off slower than a prop with shorter blades and less rake.
do you really need a gauge for a atlas jack plate on the dash?My new boat did not have one.
That made it clear as mud.
What height should i have it while trailering?
Great info.
My situation is when I’m at full speed and trimmed up, my back end starts fish tailing.
Do I need to lower jack plate? Bye the way I don’t have a hydraulic jack plate, it’s mechanical.
You mean chinewalk?
CrankinBass sure
Thats “crabbing.” Raise the motor in small increments (1/8”). Depending on which prop I run, mine usually starts to do that at 3 3/4 prop to pad or lower. Just remember the higher you raise it you’ll increase top end to a point, but the choppy ride will get worse. Like Crews said in the video...in the nasty stuff, he drops the motor low. Without a hydraulic plate, you have to find a happy medium on engine height.
TheMannyduckslayer The answer is to bump your trim down until it starts to even out. I will do a video explanation soon
Do you have hydraulic steering check for play in the steering when the boat is parked turn the wheel slowly and see if there's any play it should respond right away as soon as you touch the wheel let us know how you make out
I was wondering in your video what’s sparking on the outboard it looks to be at the passenger side near steering
I don’t see what you mean
Does the jack plate replace the traditional trim switch or do you use both? I’m new to boating and trying to learn and understand what every parts function is.
You still need both. Motor trim is most important for fuel economy. Motor height (jack) can help fine tune on plane, or run super shallow off plane.
@@MarshallSorenson Jack Plate also affects mph AND mpg, as well as how quick to Plane ... 🎯👍😎
I’d recommend while your trimmed and jacked to lower back down to do turn maneuvering that way you won’t hook at all in most cases.
How shallow can you run with a jack plate like this?
John a little off base. What's your opinion on the pantera classic!
how would you go about using your jack plate to run in shallow water?
In that situation, raise it, to get the boat on plane. This is where a hydraulic plate would be worth the extra money.
so whats the difference between a jack plate and the power trim other than vertical vs horizontal?
The jack plate moves the motor vertically up and down. The trim changes the angler of the motor. Both need to be adjusted at different times to let the boat and engine operate optimally.
What is considered "nominal" water pressure range?
5 is a minimum while running but around 10 or more is really what you need
Having problems getting out the hole period..im running a four blade trophy prop on a 150 yamaha..The prop has four 11/16 holes drilled in it to..wont get out the hole unless someone sits up on the front???? I dont have a hydralic jack plate..The one i have is up all the way..
- Have you tried lowering the plate?
- Can you put plugs in the holes, on the prop?
- If the above has been done, I'd recommend getting ahold of a local propeller shop. Pick there brain, verify you have the correct diameter and pitch prop.
- Have tried rearranging weight in the boat?
Have you tried adjusting the Trim?
My jack plates slides down as I’m travelling can you give me any pointers
That’s a problem
How do you come to a complete stop while going 60 mph without water filling the boat
Come off plane slowly. Just before the wake catches you, you may need to give a slight bit of gas.
Try exhausting porting your prop. It allows the prop to spin up faster too
Put 'er in second and drop the clutch..... let 'er eat
OK, maybe I missed it. So what's the whole purpose of having a jack plate as well as why would you raise it higher while up on plane? Opposed to not having one at all.
It gives you adjustment to get the right amount of motor out of the water for a particular boat. A lot of people find a sweet spot and never adjust it again. Some do all the time looking for speed. I’m not a pro fisherman so speed means nothing to me but I like to optimize and get the boat and motor out of the water as much as I can at cruise speed for gas mileage and stability. The more boat AND motor out of the water means less drag and better mileage. This usually gives you a better ride also. Plus, if you do want the speed it’s available to If you crank it up a little more.
Also on a lot of boats adding a jack plate will get you up faster out of the hole and stop porpoising just because of setting the motor farther back.
damn...a merc submarine!
LOL! niiiice! 😂
@@glenholmgren1218 no dinky 20 footer with a giant outboard should have a problem getting on plane.....too much BS. acting as if it's a racing boat vs. just a fishing boat.
Does this only apply to those that haul ass from one fish to the next? 🤣
not bad
Honestly there bars aren’t bad it’s js tryna act like the hardest gangsters around when they prolly grew up rich
Roster tail
if anything you confused people more... it's plan and simple, some people just don't get it...
Boat propellors are affected by cavitation, and ventilation. They don't "spin out". That, and his brief foray into propellor blades made it clear to me John does not understand the science behind propellors. It would have been a much better and more concise presentation if he did. He may know a lot about other things but how a propellor works, and why we do the things we do to get optimum performance out of them is not one.
“ThEy DoN’t SpIn OuT” how else people spin a hub out? Everyone knows what he’s talking about. If you can’t grab him saying a reference of what’s happening maybe you should expand your brain, scientist.
Yeah hot shot how about you explaining it to everybody with a boat instead of scientific terms use layman terms since you're so damn smart every I've been running boats since I was damn 10 years old and I'm 58 and we all refer to it as spinning out so you give us your scientific term you nerd
So extra
...listening to this guy try to explain something that he really doesnt understand.
@Jeff Lyons how to drive a boat
Yeah dude
Hey Bipedal, please post a link to your video. 😆
John Crews has been bass fishing and operating hydraulic jack plates longer than you've probably been alive son
@@NytronX then why can he not explain it well?
Wow this was extremely long winded for a 101
I'm just here for the keyboard warriors 🤣
I live for the “banter”
I didn’t ask
Nice try
