The Lost Great: “He Just Couldn’t Stop” John Lucas’ Stunted Growth Story

- John Lucas, a forgotten great point guard, whom if the Rockets had for the faithful 86 NBA Finals series, may have just went all the way and given Houston its first ever championship. Think of how much that could’ve changed the journey of Lucas as a player, and what that may have meant for his HOF chances. With as much mentoring talent Lucas has, imagine what influence he could’ve had today with hall of famer before or after his name. But he just couldn’t stop using cocaine. In his early life and career, Lucas was an outstanding athlete, not just basketball, but a dominant tennis player all the way through his 4 years at the University of Maryland, winning two singles championships in 74 and 76, named an all American in the sport and the conferences’ top all around athlete. Doing all this while a 3 time all American in basketball, leading his team in scoring every season except his freshman year. He went on to be the #1 pick in the 1976 NBA Draft over 4 future Hall of Famers, including Dennis Rodman, who was a handful of spots from not even being drafted at all. The Houston Rockets had high hopes for Lucas when they took the point guard over some great bigs and wing players in the draft, hoping with all their scoring, he could come in and be a floor general and keep the guys happy. He played 14 years, and on six teams. Unfortunately, much of the opportunity he blew in the league, because he just couldn’t stop doing cocaine and it led to an underwhelming career that should've easily be Hall Of Fame. John Lucas was so talented as a player. I can't imagine what kind of player he could've been had he stayed clean throughout his career. An all time great for sure. How he turned his future around and helps other troubled players is legendary though. Also his work with kids. Salute John Lucas.
Nice to know about these guys I'm a late 2000s kid, and it's crazy to think how small minor things can change the course of a man's life and career thank you stunted growth for giving myself and others a perspective of life in a positive light
Great piece, SG. You should do one of the best players ever out of Chicago, Leon Smith, a guy who was a lottery pick out of high-school, but had tons of problems & actually kidnapped his girlfriend, WNBA star Cappie Pondexter, and ended up in a mental institution after trying to kill himself. Guy was down bad.
@Stunted Growth Yoooo JC, Will you do a video on Chris Herren from the Celtics???
@@gamelove100 Great story
Played his sons house full of shooters
He is one of the great ambassadors in The NBA. He has help countless players become better versions of themselves
2:19 You were meant to say Dennis Johnson not Rodman.
Love DJ. My favorite Celtic.
Yes I was confused on that myself,Because Rodman was a rookie in 87 with the Pistons.
Props to you for this golden oldie. Not many know of him but he was a legit point guard.
It's a shame he and Moses Malone couldn't make history in college and frankly even I didn't know he was on the 81 Rox.
Great job JC, his greatness just came later as a coach. Both in basketball and dealing with addiction. That's his way to make up for the missed opportunities.
I added a name to my list of players I would like to see a story on: Tyus Edney.
Plus Roy Tarpley, Martell Webster and Anthony Randolph.
You were cool enough to read my list last video, so this will be the last time I post it.
Appreciate the content you provide. I've seen 90% of them
Damn I only know or Webster and randolph. Really wanted randolph to pan out too.
They would be great vids
@@kor6bigtime592 I remember seeing Anthony Randolph score 42 points in Summer League. I thought he would be a superstar next to Steph Curry.
Roy Tarpley (R.I.P.) is old school. However, people used to ask who is the best young power forward in 1988, him or Karl Malone?
Tarpley hurt me man.. I was so sold on him being at LEAST a 4x all star
@@grammysworld5449 For real. He had all the skill in the world
You're editing is amazing 10:28
Never knew his story but knew everyone has trained with him
My guy!!! Mane he was instrumental in my growth as a player and person going to his camps
“Dennis JOHNSON” Not Rodman
Why did the 70's make every basketball player look older than they were?
Dude had 9 lives for sure.It seems like he got many more chances than guys like Michael Ray,John Drew who were banned for life
Not saying Houston would've beaten Boston in 1986, but aside from John Lucas being busted for drugs that season, Ralph Sampson had a significant injury in the regular season(against Boston) and came back too soon. He was still able to perform in the postseason, but he was not the same. Had those 2 things not happened, the Rockets would have been lethal.🏀🏀
One of Carolinas favorite sons.. Even the kids out here know about him
Man still has the best middle school all American camp in my opinion
can we get an update on Terrence Williams?
" Beamed up off that Natalie Portman " , hilarious. lol
John Lucas, Mitchell Wiggins, Vernon Maxwell. Drugs really did a number on the Rockets
Lewis Lloyd too. And the biggest..Sampsons injury
Purely entertaining! Especially with the analogies, the classic video at the beginning and witty commentary… another great one JC! I was hoping you wouldn’t show his son getting dunked over lol
Don’t forget he gave birth to one of the best LeBron Highlights of all time
Dennis Rodman got drafted in 86
s/o to coach lucas for getting clean and being an advocate but calling out from nba games like it's a grocery store job is WILD!
A couple names I’d suggest… Reggie Lewis, Reggie Williams, Dana barros, Bernard king, and Roy tarpley… great players who’s game and time as the man was cut short
But in those you mentioned, Bernard King was the only one who now already in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Just moved to Houston and went to a rockets game it was good to see him on the bench
My fellow Bahamian Brother.... GREAT video as always.
You should do a series on Brothers from The Bahamas who did make it(Mychal Thompson Rick fox) and those who didnt(dexter Cambridge Rick fox younger brother) make it to the NBA
He has done so much for basketball, he was able to get his son into the NBA. Lucas Jr. was ok, but that’s it!
Dennis Rodman was drafted in 1986 (Round: 2 / Pick: 27)
2:24 you said Dennis Rodman it should be Dennis Johnson.👍🏾
Dude in the in the beginning 😵😵😵😵😵
What happened to John Lucas Jr
*John Lucas III?
Hey Good brother,
Dennis Rodman wasn't in the 1976 draft. I think you meant to say Dennis Johnson.
Dam sad story
This is a good 1.
Do Terry Furlow, Trent Tucker, & Glen Rice. 3 Flint legends
A lot of talent came through Flint.
Unless it's a different Dennis Rodman you're talking about, Dennis Rodman didn't come into the NBA until, 1986, not, 1976
2:15 I see fathers of a couple of Stunted Growth alumni in that draft
Him and Len Bias-both coached by Lefty Drisell-what type of program was Lefty not managing...especially with his I did not know commentary
Dennis Rodman was in the 1986 NBA draft dude.
Tommy Mason Griffin. Do him next! Houston LEGEND!
Went to Madison with him
Did a good job coaching the Spurs but I got a feeling he was hired to be fired.
As a player he was the original Derrick Rose. Big explosive point guard, who could do it all.
He wasn't a big guard
@@keanyodavis2244 He was 6'3". In the 70's.
I'm pretty certain he was under 6ft,I really think the video is wrong, but hey...
@@keanyodavis2244 I've seen him in person at Summer League. He looks like a forward up close.
I don't remember him having "ups," like DRose. Everything else, yeah....!
Is he related with john lucas lll the 5'11 pg from the bulls also the one lebron dunked on
Can you do Rawle Alkins
Greetings brother love your show two guys you should consider first Duane Thomas, Dallas Cowboys running back and second John Gilliam just Google thier high lights then you will see why.
Michael Ray Richardson too
Also add coaches too. Start with trash-man: Former OKC Coach Scot Brooks!
Beamed up wit that Natalie Portman 😳 😂
Sounds like a pretty good career to me
Rick James said it best... Cocaine is a helluva drug!!!
Dennis Johnson, not Dennis Rodman, my Brother.
Joe Young
2:23 Dennis Johnson*
Coke is a hella of a drug. Dude looks like he’s in his 50s during his NBA career.
Can I please suggest Marko Milič?
When are we getting Karlton Hines
What happened to Joe Smith and what happened to Kyle Korver and what happened to Ben Macklemore
do 1 on jahii carson
You mean Dennis Johnson
Reminds me of my story.....if you know who I am good, but I won't put my name out for public sakes. Bieng raised s.Fla I got introduced to cocaine in high-school. Time I was supposed to go to college I'm fully in it. Now @37 I have still been battling off and on.
It all started out with the "hanging with the wrong crowd"
Chris Childs
Ah so I see he is father of John Lucas III
natalie portman aka that lady thor
Dennis Johnson not Rodman
Off that Natalie Portman 💀💀
0:17 when the WAP is on the way
I know Dennis rodman was not drafted in 1976
dennis rodman??
Yup my bad
Dennis Johnson not rodman
SC30
Dennis Rodman?
Dennis Rodman was drafted in '86 not '76
Yep, I think he meant Dennis (DJ) Johnson
@@ericgeorge2256 ahhhh!
Dennis Rodman??? Nope... you mean Dennis Johnson....
Did LeBron just jumped over his son in 2012?
Boring
Johnson not Rodman
