The Lost Great: “He Just Couldn’t Stop” John Lucas’ Stunted Growth Story

  • John Lucas, a forgotten great point guard, whom if the Rockets had for the faithful 86 NBA Finals series, may have just went all the way and given Houston its first ever championship. Think of how much that could’ve changed the journey of Lucas as a player, and what that may have meant for his HOF chances. With as much mentoring talent Lucas has, imagine what influence he could’ve had today with hall of famer before or after his name. But he just couldn’t stop using cocaine. In his early life and career, Lucas was an outstanding athlete, not just basketball, but a dominant tennis player all the way through his 4 years at the University of Maryland, winning two singles championships in 74 and 76, named an all American in the sport and the conferences’ top all around athlete. Doing all this while a 3 time all American in basketball, leading his team in scoring every season except his freshman year. He went on to be the #1 pick in the 1976 NBA Draft over 4 future Hall of Famers, including Dennis Rodman, who was a handful of spots from not even being drafted at all. The Houston Rockets had high hopes for Lucas when they took the point guard over some great bigs and wing players in the draft, hoping with all their scoring, he could come in and be a floor general and keep the guys happy. He played 14 years, and on six teams. Unfortunately, much of the opportunity he blew in the league, because he just couldn’t stop doing cocaine and it led to an underwhelming career that should've easily be Hall Of Fame. John Lucas was so talented as a player. I can't imagine what kind of player he could've been had he stayed clean throughout his career. An all time great for sure. How he turned his future around and helps other troubled players is legendary though. Also his work with kids. Salute John Lucas.

Great piece, SG. You should do one of the best players ever out of Chicago, Leon Smith, a guy who was a lottery pick out of high-school, but had tons of problems & actually kidnapped his girlfriend, WNBA star Cappie Pondexter, and ended up in a mental institution after trying to kill himself. Guy was down bad.

Props to you for this golden oldie. Not many know of him but he was a legit point guard.

Not saying Houston would've beaten Boston in 1986, but aside from John Lucas being busted for drugs that season, Ralph Sampson had a significant injury in the regular season(against Boston) and came back too soon. He was still able to perform in the postseason, but he was not the same. Had those 2 things not happened, the Rockets would have been lethal.🏀🏀
