  • There was lots of expectations for the eldest Wiggins coming into the NBA and when he did play for the most part he wasn’t a complete disappointment. He didn’t miss a single game in his first 2 seasons, went to the NBA Finals in 85-86 and played an intricate role on the 89-90 Houston Rockets averaging 15 and a half points per game. But in the midst of living out his life long dream he encountered a few bumps in the road that change his career forever. Most notable was him being banned from the NBA for 2 and a half years for testing positive for cocaine use. In 1986 the Houston Rockets challenged the almighty 67 win Boston Celtics, who were on the brink of winning their 3rd NBA title in 5 years. Houston were no slouch themselves winning 51 games and had one of their best teams in years. They lost to the Celtics 4-2 and later that year Wiggins and his teammate Lewis Lloyd, whom he challenged for playing time regularly, tested positive for substance use and early 1987 the pair were banned from the league for life, but reinstated before the 89-90 season. Other than that upcoming year, Wiggins completely fell off his NBA journey and was out of the league by 91-92 at 32 years old, only playing 6 of the 9 seasons he was technically in the league. His story usually goes untold and turned out to be one of the better teachable stories of how he stuck around the game and despite his troubles, raised 6 children who became successful in their own rite. The 80s was a wild time. But who knows what the 2030s will be or 2040s. Things we think are normal now may be shunned in the future so I can't judge Mitchel Wiggins or any other banned NBA player from the past. He did stick around for his kids though, and that was crucial in their success. He had a son go #1! arguably because of it. Salute.

No doubt , the 80’s took some of the best out the game or prevented them from ever making it. I don’t see a repeat just because of how far we came In science & education about drugs. No one actually thought it was that bad but I guess in a sense they were the study samples so we now know. Great video. You wanna go with this same tone, check out Tony Parker Sr out of Chicago …

Mitchell is regarded as a legend in Greece, he had an extraordinary career there during the 90s. One of the clubs he played with, retired his number. Great player, loved by everyone

He played in Greece, during the nighties, an era that is considered the golden age of the sport. He is still fondly remembered as a great scorer. His struggles with addiction was a blessing in disguise for Greek Basketball.

Having an NBA salary makes that easier. Most addicts don't get in trouble for using, they get caught stealing or doing some other illegal shit to feed their habit.

I was waiting for a video on Mitchell Wiggins as I used to shoot around with him on the regular and I became familiar with his backstory. From about 2005 to 2007, I worked out at the Jewish community centre in Toronto (Bathurst between Finch and Sheppard) that no longer exists. My cousin that worked as a lifeguard there (they had a pool, fitness gym, ball courts, dance studio etc) introduced me to him and said, Yo this dude used to guard Michael Jordan in practice and was on the Bulls in the 80s. I was like, Oh word? Anyways, dude was super cool and approachable. He had 3 boys that had games and practices at the gym and he told me with certainty that his youngest Andrew, would be the one to make the league. In 05, Andrew was 10 years old. He talked about how Andrew was the most gifted of his sons and that his wife being a former Olympian gave Andrew an extra boost of athleticism needed to excel. At the time, they were living in the same city I lived in which is called Vaughan, just above Toronto. We started talking about his stats, and I was super confused as to why he headed to Greece after what seemed like a decent year in the NBA. So when I got home (smartphones weren't prevalent in 2005), I googled Mitchell and learned about how he and another player were the first players banned over drugs in the NBA. I shot around with him in the gym many times after that first day, but it was never something I brought up. Anyways, I always knew someone would make a video on him one of these days. I often thought of requesting the topic but since I had lots of respect for Mitchell, I thought that would be kind of grimy.
