People think cyber security is easy, it aint. You explained it properly so I thank you for that. My message to people who want to get into cyber security, start in helpdesk because you will not survive if you dont understand the fundamentals. The higher level the job the more you will need to do. Yes its cool to be a sysadmin or cyber security person, but have you put in the work. Dont let this stop you tho, if you can honestly say you understand networking, servers, virtualization, containerization, cloud computing and programming properly then by all means apply. I do believe that there should be a test during the interview to have the individual show they know what they say they do, so many fakers it makes it harder for the people who are who they say they are. Its cool tho because the company will get rid of the individual and they will end up in helpdesk since they need experience. Yes its possible to get a job in the area, but the right way to do it is to start from the bottom, and dont let salary fool you also, people who earn alot know alot. Anyways just wanted to express this. I wish the people who actually work hard a successful career in IT, and to those who fake it, you will learn it eventually.
Yes. Everything goes back to fundamentals. I'm pinning this because security goes back to fundamentals. Sure no one likes working helpdesk. Helpdesk gives you fundamentals. It's not for everyone but it does help you with future jobs.
@@KevtechITSupport I am grateful to be working the help desk right now. I work for a major hospital in NYC and the amount of info I have learned in just a few weeks is amazing, I wouldn’t have learned a lot of the things I have learned by just taking certs or taking courses, I’m learning it all on the fly at the help desk. So yes, I am grateful I did not skip the help desk.
I am about to finish a bootcamp in cyber security. Are you suggesting I go for HelpDesk roles over Soc analyst roles?
@@NK-iw6rq try soc roles and focus on learning one siem tool.
@@KevtechITSupport Thanks Kev! Appreciate all you do for the cyber security community.
I’m working at a Helpdesk now. The knowledge and experience I’m getting is unbelievable. My Section Chief told me stay there for a year and then things will open up for me. September 19 will be 1 year. Kevtech helped me getting my first Active Directory lab and it helped me get this job.
Hey Kevin! I watch your videos often, they're very informative. I know what it is to get your hustle on coming from the Bronx. Thanks for everything you do from one native New Yorker to another.. I often think of changing my career, but I make good money where I'm at. My plan is to keep absorbing all that I can and maybe get a job when I go semi retirement.. I work 70 hrs a week now. The most important thing here is I really love to figure out what is wrong and fix the problem. I seem to gravitate on the linux platform, but I know Windows is essential.. Thanks for all that you do..
NIce one Kevin, I know someone who started in Helpdesk and now is CIO of a multi national. You have to start somewhere, then you need to learn and grow from that.
agree, thanks.
Always great content bro! Thank you sensei!
Thanks.
You have to start somewhere in IT. You have to gain experience wherever you can to move where you want.
yep.
Good points Kevin. I think it depends on the company. My current company allows me to do more than just tickets. This helps diversify my skillsets.
Yep. Every helpdesk job is different.
da homie👀👀🤖🤖🤖🤖
Hey there Kev! Great video, straight and on point! I'm new to the IT world with no prior experience. I recently became A+ certified. The college I attended had some pretty decent VM labs; using OpenWrt, Wireshark, Osticket and using AD to set passwords and GPO's. I was going to create my own VM home labs and link them to my resume. Do you think that i should mention my school lab experiences on my resume? Also, do you have other videos on creating some VM labs? Again, cool video and you got yourself another subscriber here. Best to you!
I have videos on building a home lab from scratch. You can use those videos and add the skills on the resume. kevtechitsupport.com/helpdesk-getting-started-1 my website goes over it
I have started from Cable pulling job now Iam at helpdesk support learning a ton from helpdesk job. 💯 Agree with you
Thanks
Im a ICT helpdesk for a year now and man i told you, i learn alot im well experience.. thanks to kevtech i learn alot from your videos...
If you can't work well with people, you'll only get so far in the world. Patience, kindness, and communication are very important IT skills. I think helpdesk can help teach some of these skills.
Yeah. You need good soft skills in helpdesk.
❤
Thank you Kevtech you helped me get a 2nd interview as a field service technician now I just have to wait until the end of the month to see if I get it.
Good luck
did you get the job?
Let's fix that algorithm
Without foundation people will struggle in most areas.
Yep.
I’m an entry level 1 it support just got my Google certificate… can anyone recommend where I can find remote jobs not only in US cause I’m from Kenya. I only find US jobs
I just starting cyber security and it ain’t easy! Thats even having my BS on cyber security and 10 years of IT Service Desk experience.
Hi Kev, another excellent video. I have a question regarding this video. I heard you say that you are a tech trainer and have trained people before. How would I go about getting trained by you? Do you have an in person/online training program for distance learners? Is there an interview process to qualify for entering your training program? Is there a website that I can refer to that answers these or other commonly asked questions? I'm located in the Washington, DC area if that matters. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and please keep up the good work.
If you look up jobskillshare. I'm a trainer on his platform. www.jobskillshare.org/it-pro-skills-development-program/
@@KevtechITSupport thank you very much!
I do tech training through jobskillshare platform. I'm partner with them but I only do training on that platform.
It's like wanting to be a pro basketball player. You learn to dribble stationary, then learn to pick your head up, then begin to walk, then jog, and run. Then add crossovers and around the back. Fundamentals first!
fundamentals is so important.
I took the it fundamentals test along with my A+. It worked because the company saw I was willing to put in the work along with watching you and Mike.
You can learn the fundamentals. It doesn't mean you need to start in helpdesk
@FM You can learn fundamentals but you learn a lot being in helpdesk. I have interviewed a bunch of people in cybersecurity and they all wished that they worked helpdesk. Not saying you should work helpdesk but it does give you a good understanding of a infrastructure.
hello KevTech. do you think a field service technician is better to start than helpdesk because you don't have to talk to people and do the ticketing system?
my first job was a field tech for the doe and ended up in helpdesk anyways.
@@KevtechITSupport oh cool thanks for letting me know.l’ll take helpdesk if there’s no other option.:)
It depends on which field you are in tech. Now Cybersecurity and Networking yes. But software developers do not need help desk to get their start in IT. Data Analyst do not need help desk to get started in IT. Cloud computing space does not use phone support like help desk (although they use a ticketing system to perform their job duties). So it really depends on the industry in tech!
Your targeting level one helpdesk. Higher level helpdesk does aws or cloud. Not sure if you know that. They even do coding.
@@KevtechITSupport are you talking about Cloud Support Engineers?
@iCharmCity410 no man regular helpdesk. There asking for cloud now. If your on discord you would know. It's changed a lot.
Who’s discord? Because if I want to get valid information I just rather do my research and look at Job descriptions and salaries. But I can see why you say that because your forte is only help desk. There is a whole industry out there outside of help desk and I have met and spoken with people who have broken into IT without having to go into a help desk role. Again not all job fields in tech require you to start at help desk. Not everything is phone supported. Other industries in tech are project based.
@iCharmCity410 I never said you need to work helpdesk. I'm also a tech trainer. I have examples of people who skipped helpdesk. My discord discord.gg/bTB8etWj. I think your misunderstanding what I said. I have 7,000 members on my discord. Some got jobs in helpdesk, some went cybersecurity, some went to msp companies. It really depends on the person. Like I said on my video. It goes back to network, skills, etc. I have a whole discord of different helpdesk experiences. Not all helpdesk jobs are the same. If you think it's just phone calls.
I got a job as internal IT tech for a school. No AD or 365 work. Lots of hands on work with computers and inventory and stuff and dealing with kids/teachers and their laptops. Would you consider this as skipping helpdesk or would you categorize this job in the same group as helpdesk?
I worked in a school. Its not really helpdesk. Still good work experience but you don't touch office 365 or active directory. I worked in a school before going into IT Support. I used it as work experience but it's not skipping helpdesk.
@@KevtechITSupport how do u reckon I progress my career? Should I need to get a job in helpdesk after this?
@@aseed89 you shouldn't have too. Just get the right certs and learn the right skills.
@@KevtechITSupport So you think I should skip helpdesk in this case then
@@aseed89 you can try and see what happens. I was a field tech and transferred over to IT Support doing helpdesk stuff than I worked my way up.
Do you recommend I have to start with the A+ for help desk or could I start with Network+\Security+?
A+ is helpdesk. Network and security+ is for other jobs. You may need IT Support asking for security+ if it's a government job. Really depends
@@KevtechITSupport thank you I really appreciate it. One more question. Do I need the A+ in your opinion? I’ve heard that most help desk jobs don’t really require the A+ because they can teach you while you’re on the job as long as your willing to learn and have a positive attitude? I’m new to IT and plan on to transitioning IT from another field. I want to eventually work in Cybersecurity as a security engineer. I’m located in the Washington dc area if that matters? Thank you again for all that you do. It’s greatly appreciated and my friends and I watch your videos all the time. Please keep up the good work.
@@bicdeez007 depends on HR and the companies. Some companies require a+
Can someone with a 2 year diploma Computer & Network technician, comptia A+, comptia network +, comptia security +, knowledfge of SQL , Python, and taking a devops bootcamp skip the helpdesk and actually become a junior devops or ? I d like your opinion and thoughts and advice if possible. Thanks.
I never worked devops. Wouldn't know
Probably my biggest issue with IT is how it starts out as customer service... im really not the social type
You have jobs like software developers who don't really talk to people.
@@KevtechITSupport yeah im just not very confident when it comes to that. Failed it once, and now with stuff like chatgpt around idk if its worth it
Why "stuck" in help desk? Is it bad thing working as help desk or it tecnician?
People talk bad about helpdesk. I been on over 100 coaching calls. Some people get too comfortable or don't want to learn new skills.
its stressful and no career path
Algorithm boost
Hello. l have no university degree. Can l become a helpdesk? and Can l find a job as heldesk?
I don't have a degree and I did helpdesk before.
@@KevtechITSupport thank you very much your answer.
dont do it. its an easy job to find for a reason
@BleuBillions tough call if you do it make sure they allow access to networking , firewall, vmware, so at least you are learning new skills..
@BleuBillionsI’m in Helpdesk now. The experience will definitely help you out when you put in for other positions
