Hi I'm John, and I've been passionate about #history since I could remember. I majored in history and historical reseach and triained for a year under an actual historian. Ultimately I am a a History Buff like many of us. Let's #react and discuss things we know and so much we don't know about history!
In 2001 I was honored to be the recipient of the Jack H. Longaker History Prize. This is an award for a senior year student that shows a great passion for history.
How is this channel different from other history channels? It is simple, I have learned and worked along side many historians verifying and discovering sourcess that add more context to a person, an area or topic. This does not make me automatically knowledgable in history, this helps me understand how we come to conclusions on history. However, enjoying learning about history we all like makes us History Buffs!

Thank you! I've been protesting against singing crabs for years! They really upset me, because crabs can't really hold a tune. They're horrible singers, and yet Hollywood decides it's a crab that gets the singing role and not a parrot, because it "can't swim under water".
They're going all woke, I'm telling you!

@@cloverite there has been a white Black Panther, and nobody who read those comics got upset. Also, race is integral to T'Challa's character and story. There's nothing in the Little Mermaid story to indicate what colour Ariel's human half is because race has nothing to do with her character. I mean, she's not even human. She could have blue skin for all it matters.

In Australia, most people have embraced the fact we need to do something about climate change. However, there are genuine and valid concerns that the government are closing down power plants, banning natural gas in houses and petrol cars too quickly when there is nowhere near enough alternative energy sources or electric car battery chargers in place. There are also the human rights concerns around the mining of cobalt. Additionally, there is big money to be made in renewables. There are suspicions that some of these people donate money to political parties and in return will get govt contracts to build wind and solar farms. So it's maybe not so much climate change denial but people seeing that the rollout of renewables is a schmozzle and we'll be left without power.

The Little Mermaid is a traditional Danish fairy-tale set in Denmark and Ariel was described as a blue-eyed, red-haired girl. People are mostly annoyed because of double standards, where it's fine to depict European historical, cultural and literary figures as black, but is a cardinal sin to have a black character or figure portrayed by a white person.

    • @HumorAndHistory

Disney's version was not Danish. The original didn't have red hair.
She was from the Caribbean where Disney's version was based.
So none of your points make sense because there were already.many changes Disney made to the original and they are remaking their version.

@@olavihekandjo2928 What are you talking about? This is how Hans Christian Andersen describes the little mermaid:
"Her skin was as clear and delicate as a rose-leaf, and her eyes as blue as the deepest sea"
"Her skin was delicately fair, and beneath her long dark eye-lashes her laughing blue eyes shone with truth and purity"
Under the water the setting is the fictional kingdom of "Atlantica" and on land a European castle.

@@HumorAndHistoryave never expressed my opinion on the new Disney's mermaid, but this argument almost teases me to react so let me please.
1st. I don't know anyone who defends white Jesus. But at least Jesus in movies, although I don't like the fact that he's mostly (not always anymore) white, has usually similar skin tone to everyone else so he doesn't weirdly stand out as he would if he let's say looked like a viking. On the other hand the sea folk in Disney mermaid were of fair skin while the mermaid herself was african-american. That's just so arbitrary. Why not turkic then, or arabic while we're at it? But then americans wouldn't watch it because it's really not about inclusivity, it's about Hollywood trying to be the one who tells everyone's stories and patronizing their current favourite race which they think they now own the copyright to. At least movie Jesus usually adheres to biological laws and looks somewhat similar to his peers, while the mermaid simply doesn't.
2nd. Now if the movie was an adaptation made for americans, it would make absolute sense if some of them were black, some hispanic and some asian- american but to make all or most of them white and the main person black is obviously Hollywood trying to lecture people.
Btw the former depictions of Jesus as white came from the time when the makers didn't really care for reality and those movies were made in certain cultural understanding coming either from ignorance or simply convenience. It wasn't common to have plenty of middle eastern actors available who could depict Jesus. And are movies made in segregation time really your reference point by which you judge things?
In these days they actually do try to be more real and depict Jesus as a middle easterner so when Hollywood claims to strive for realism and cares about authenticity, it makes even less sense to depict someone's traditional fairytale in a way that's so obviously influenced by current american political war.
Last but not least I hope you won't simply blame me of racism. Sorry for the length. Have a nice day.

She's a Hawaiian native but not native Hawaiian. She has no native Hawaiian ancestry, she's half Filipino and half white. People were rightfully pissed about that one, especially considering the industry has historically favoured 'white' features, even going so far as to cast biracial people so they can keep the white features while also claiming that they are representing a certain culture, although that doesn't apply here.
For a show as strongly cultural and a point of pride for Hawaiians, is it so hard to cast an actual native Hawaiian (which Nani is)?

    • @NyikoDoris

the complaints aren't that the actress isn't "black enough" because the story is not about black people, it's that she's NOT a native Hawaiian. THAT'S the gripe. Ariel's race was never a plot point, Lilo and Nani's guardianship is always hanging in the balance because they're one, not light skinned which the actress is and two, are native Hawaiians so racism AND colourism.
Lilo's actress is the exact heritage, why couldn't they do the same for Nani?

Americans never hear the truth about Churchill. What he did to Dresden and other places were war crines. He unleashed anthrax on a Scottish island, rendering it uninhabitable for decades. He would force people to watch him in his bath because he got off on their discomfort. He was permanently drunk. He won the war more by luck than judgement and his great speeches were performed by an actor. The best that can be said if him is that he was not as bad as Hitler, but he was neither good nor great.
