Hi, I'm John, and I've been passionate about #history since I could remember. I majored in history and historical research and trained for a year under an actual historian. Ultimately, I am a History Buff like many of us. Let's #react and discuss things we know and so much we don't know about history!

Opinions from Anglo Saxons Hollywood, Congress, White House, Media are just like the spits of the dogs against flying birds…when US military went against Bin Laden in Afghanistan, French special forces were at their side at their specific demand…to the surprise of the White House…so far US has lost Vietnam, Irak and Afghanistan wars…not a very good result isn’t it?

Sorry your reaction to American service verses UK service. US service is better because... Misses the point, we (UK) don't want a server to be 'attentive' (in the American sense), asking us how things are, interfering with our conversation and/or meal, we want them to be aware enough to know when they are needed/wanted. Its part of why we give signals to the wait staff, by placing cutlery to say I'm finished with this. If we get the bill (check), it suggests the meal is over, we may want pudding/dessert, or a drink but those options have been shutdown, our meal and conversation need to stop, it is very unpleasant. As is, clearing some of the plates when people at the table are still eating. Good servers in both countries understand their clients and adapt to their wants/needs.

Here in Canada, we DO use feet and inches in certain trades like construction/carpentry etc we buy fruits and veggies by the kilogram but buy potatoes and butter by the pound. We got a bit of a strange mix of imperial and metric measurements here as well.

Gold, though maybe not matching the magic of the first. English language nerds may know that the two words for food thing is post Norman invasion of England. The farm animals reflect the old English of the peasants but food (boeuf -> beef) names are from French elite.

Most European countries produce wine. The UK hardly produces hardly any and what we do produce explains why we don't. Out of all the Wines of Europe I'd say the French is the poorest quality, even though they probably produce the largest volume. German wine tends to be rather average. Not especially bad and actually quite drinkable but they also produce some really good wines. So if you pick a random German wine, you can be pretty sure it's not bad. I wouldn't take the same risk with French wine. There's a good chance you'll be disappointed. Most of the rest of Europe produce pretty reliably good wine.

french here ! some things forgotten about WW2 : 1/ At the time, France was still in turmoil from the early 1930s left movements (strikes, etc) that themselves happened both as an effect of the richest industrial regions of France (all north / north-east) were ruined during WW1, and from the 1927 crack There were even many acts of sabotage in plants by the left that led to defective ammunition 2/ the "small invasion" of Germany was not turned back because of any resistance, as there were none, but because of politics, as both the french and english prime ministers still didn't want "any war to happen" 3/ the "around the Maginot" assault was also made possible as Belgium proclaimed its neutrality... and refused to sync its military with France and also refused the proposal of the french army coming into Belgium to reinforce them. So... Belgium didn't cooperate, got invaded with its army wiped out as the french army rushed north to defend Belgium leaving the Ardennes front quite light, and was thus caught as the army both didn't think that the germans would go there (the Ardennes) or that the belgians would loose so fast. Problem : that was the main army, with now stretched and cut supply lines, encircled, with the english army trying to flee, which ended in Dunkerque. 4/ the tactics in fact did change from WW1... but in a weird way : french tanks were seen as "infantry support weapons" only, so they were deployed as small groups. So they were easily encircled or skipped. These tanks were especially slow, but they were quite well armored for the time - even more when germany at that time had mosly panzer Is and IIs, some panzer IIIs, and a few panzer IVs The most famous B1 Bis tank was the "Eure" : it survived 140 hits and took out 13 german panzers. on its own. 11 panzer IIIs and 2 panzer IVs Fun fact : the germans celebrated and gave honors to a lot of french soldiers during the invasion. In fact.. most of its allies back stabbed France, while its ennemies (germany) respected France a lot. PS : yay, got that to stick ! silly youtube and its bizarre censoring ><

Us British have never hidden away from the hardships of life. In America you strive for the happy ending and thats admirable but over here we have a much more realistic and harsh view on the world. We are raised with these public health films so when we get older we arent naive to the hardships of adult life. I remember seeing the fire alarm film when i was about 8 and as an adult i have never ever not checked my fire alarm. They are harsh things to watch but they work

I have only seen police twice in the 24 years I have lived in n my tiny village one was looking after a cow that had run away after milking. The 2nd time 2 Liverpool gangster had run out there car and into the village through a hedge. The police aeroplane lit up the village and a tone of specialist police all in black with huge guns. They caught both of them within 2 hours. The whole set up was amazing no fuss no hassle.

The reason why most American sitcoms fail when trying to remake their British counterparts is because of how we both view ourselves. Americans TV sitcom “heroes” are mostly seen by us Brits as being brash, arrogant, confident, wisecracking men who always have snappy one liners and always get the girl by the end of the episode. UK TV sitcoms are the complete opposite. We have a slew of British TV sitcoms, going back to the 1950s where the lead man can be any of the following (or all of the following): quiet, timid and usually not confident when it comes to getting the ladies. Our writers write about failures - usually men who try hard but ultimately fail at everything they attempt. That’s where our humour lies - pricking the pomposity of characters who think they’re better than what they actually are, and usually getting their just desserts by the end of the episode. We enjoy watching our characters fail. It lends a feeling of truth and honesty which us Brits don’t always see or get in US TV sitcoms. We love to see the racist Alf Garnett in Till Death Us do Part (remade as All in the Family in the US) get his comeuppance because we don’t agree with his racist views. We cringe at characters who think they’re funny but who to everyone else they interact with, clearly do not (David Brent in The Office UK) We also have in our TV sitcoms elements of pathos that you don’t see in US TV sitcoms. The younger Steptoe character (in Steptoe and Son - remade in the US as Sandford and Son) who desperately wants to leave the business he is running, and desperately wants to leave his dad and forge his own way in the world, but can’t because his dad is frail and, well, family is family, and you have to look after them, even at your own expense of missing out on bettering yourself and finding happiness in your life. That’s the essence of British comedy and why, when it works, we love it so much!
