I never thought I would see Diane Morgan on American TV because she's just so bloody British and her comedy is very British too - glad to see her get international recognition!
Some of us Americans have been watching her on youtube for awhile now. We don't really DO the dry British style of humor here too much, but many of us do love to receive it!
@@DistantCousin yep. Conan O'Brien is super self-deprecating, but that's usually attributed to his Irish Catholic upbringing, for instance. Plain ol' vanilla American humor just doesn't tend to be that way.
To be honest dry, satirical humor with a bit of dark humor thrown here and there makes me appreciate British culture. Favorite line by Diane Morgan is, "If it wasn't for the suffrage movement, I wouldn't be here. I would have been in the kitchen-- where I belong..." During the pandemic I also found a good comedy show called "Taskmasters" and got to say it cured my depression.
I came across her show and binge watched the whole thing in one night. I love a good “mockumentary” and boy, did this deliver. Her deadpan delivery is the absolute best. I just wish there were more episodes!
The Brits are known for making short series and only a few of them, even if the show is massively successful. It's crazy to the rest of the Western world, that South Park and The Simpsons are still running. That's considered insane overkill. The Brits are too much the opposite of that though.

@@GarrettLoganGriffin I don't get why she and other Brits say a singular noun as if it were a plural noun as in the BBC are really dumbing down. I actually enjoyed this interview, first interview in so long, where the host asked very good questions and made very good comments and the guest was naturally entertained. no faking. I love it.
In your opinion, just state that and not make sweeping narcissistic statements. I, like many others find Ricky hilarious but then again I have never been a slave to mass produced corporate culture/ main stream media like many Americans.
Seth has the best guests, the most thoughtful interviews and probably the purest heart of any hosts in the late night talk show biz. Quality content for thinking people who give a s***.
It was so deadpan hilarious, I binge-watched the whole thing in one sitting. I'd love to see an entire series on the history of the world, so I'm still waiting. And sitting.
I don't know how Philomena ended up on Seth Meyers show but I love it. There's years and years of 'documentaries' with her in character too. For those Americans who don't know, the accent is generally stereotyped as "no-nonsense northerner", which partly contributes to why it works so well: it's just another layer to the contrast between the tone and the content
Her Bolton accent is so distinctive! I've heard a lot of northern accents, but not the Bolton one, so the way she'll pronounce a word like Mary as Murry -- that was completely new to me. Perfect for the performance and a really lovely regional accent.
@@juliamilton4377 Yeah, in England its basically the further north you go the more vowels you drop, and the further west you go the more melodious your cadence becomes. One of the more famous examples for where I live is "It isn't in the tin", because we would say "t'in't in't tin" which sounds like "tin tin tin". It breaks down as t' (it) in't (isn't) in't (in the)
Seeing her so animated gives me cognitive dissonance 😂 I didn't know she had to audition. I thought she created the show, it's just such a perfect fit.
She auditioned to play Philomena Cunk, who was a character within Charlie Brooker’s Screen Wipe series (including all the other “wipes”, which I’m really missing atm). That was probably about 9-10 years ago now?? Then Charlie and Diane have taken that character and given her her own shows, with the “Cunk on….” series. So, no she didn’t have to audition for Cunk on Earth as it was written for her to play, but she did have to audition to play Philomena originally.
Nah - much like Steve Coogans (brilliant) Alan Partridge first appeared on The Day Today, Philomena first appeared on Charlie Brookers Weekly/End-of-Year Wipe. It's somewhere here on UA-cam. Great stuff.
The thing is with this show that it starts off hilariously silly and then by the end she ends up posing actually quite deep questions without becoming 'boring'. And the interviews had me in stitches 😂 those poor experts 😂
I love her on After Life almost as much as I love her calling Columbus "Columbo" for five minutes while explaining his expedition and bumping into "Planet Earth Part 2".
The best part of that joke is his actual name is in fact “Colombo”, so her mispronunciation is somehow slightly more accurate than the standardized form is, yet also more wrong, all at the same time.

This is how I live my life. Every day, I interact with colleagues, friends and random acquaintances. I spout the most ridiculous things to them and my joy is their puzzlement, that moment, when they're trying to figure out if you're actually serious. It's fleeting but so satisfying.
Diane Morgan plays her character incredibly well. I haven't seen such a good comedy in years. for me, she is definitely on the top list of actors/comediennes.
I don't think she does much playing though. I think she genuinely finds history boring, apart from weird stuff, like whether king Arthur Came A Lot. Which to be honest is probably the question that popped the most in people's mind, yet nobody bothered to ask out loud before her, nevertheless figure it out. Sure, she knows it's his name, but was he?
There are several 'Cunk on..' specials, including a few compilations from the Wipe days... seriously... it's a rabbit hole you'll never regret falling down.

She's done well to make it in America, I can remember when she was still a segment in Charlie Brooker's yearly wipe, being on after life with Ricky Gervais also on Netflix has no doubt helped her profile too.
My son told me about her show before it aired in the US. I was so happy to see that it’s now streaming on Netflix. She’s so fecking funny and believable!! She’s great on the series After Life too.

Love the show and can't wait for more "Cunk on XXXX" series. I think she inadvertently brings up very interesting point on reporting of history with the original author's perspective and context compared to someone seeing/hearing the history today. You can see how someone could skew history now and then into their favor just by changing the perspective and context of what really happened.
Diane Morgan in Afterlife as Kath was such great acting. In the last episode though when she said “I’m so lonely” I absolutely fell to pieces crying which I rarely do watching anything. I love her in the comedy series *Mandy* too. If you can get hold of that series I would 100% recommend it. It’s hilarious. The episode where she gets a job in a chippy and sneaks off for a crafty ciggy in the toilet but ends up setting fire to the room and then burning it down was top tier comedy.

@@bingonamo7520 "Spot on with her accuracy you mean?" First of all. don't tell me what I mean.Maybe I should have explained a bit further, maybe with circles and arrows or footnotes. If you had ever taught high school history you'd be amazed at the boners students make on exams, in papers or in class. There are "histories of the world" consisting of nothing but hilarious yet honest mistakes made by students from grade school through university. Pure Cunk. My favourite was one student of mine who attributed the agricultural success of the ancient Egyptian civilization to "the annual floods which deposited lint on their fields". @jena.alexis Agreed. Sometimes the best teaching is done from an unexpected direction and with something that challenges someone to say, "Wait! What?" Learning happens when people ask questions.

This is why I struggle to find most American comedy funny. Its too broad and not self deprecating enough. There are of course notable exceptions
I would have been in the kitchen-- where I belong..."
