We’re working with eBay to challenge ourselves to build a track car, only using parts and accessories from eBay. It has to be faster than a contemporary hot hatch around a racetrack and we can’t spend any more than £10,000 - including the car. The best bit? You can win the car once we’ve finished the build.

They're pretty solid cars to mod but couple of things to be aware of before you chuck more power at it.
1. The stock clutch is made of cheese, if you're planning on upping the torque/power you'll need something beefier. Helix make a great organic clutch.
2. There is a timing chain (separate from the belt) on the transmission side of the engine that connects the intake and exhaust cams. The plastic tensioner for this chain wears and eventually breaks along with the chain. At your mileage I would replace this before you start giving it beans.
3. The slop you're feeling in the gear shift is almost entirely due to the linkage bushings. Replace these with solid shifter bushings (e.g. 034 Motorsport etc) and it'll feel night and day.
4. The inlet valves are notorious for coking and will affect throttle response and power. Requires inlet manifold removal for cleaning.
Good luck, excited to see the rest of the series. I enjoyed owning mine and would've kept it if it hasn't rusted itself to oblivion...the underside looked like it has been pulled from the Titanic.

Just saw the final episode come out and can't believe I missed this series! My car is a MK5 GTi and I love it. So glad I get to watch this start to finish!!
Really happy I found this channel! I’ve got a black MK5 GTI that I’ve owned for three months and already had to swap the engine once! I also work for VW and we have a brand new MK8.5 R in fully specced at nearly £60K!

Whiteline anti lift kit (or equivalent from powerflex) for the front wishbones will significantly improve steering response as well as replacing any other worn parts. WIll be interesting to see what other mods you do, K04 conversion and/or hybrid turbo?
Audi S3 bushes are another popular upgrade, I fitted them to mine and they made a huge difference

Change the cam follower first thing before anything it’s£36 from tps and will save fuel pump and camshaft failure

Same, had a 2008 Golf for the last 10 years, still only 131,000kms on it.
I've had the ecu chipped to Stage 1, and some lovely lightweight BBS wheels with Pilot Sport Tyres.
I can't see anything to replace it, apart from another one, Or maybe refresh the suspension and bushings and keep on having fun..
If you have a modern car in an area that gets winter and maybe some salt, once or twice a year remover the front wheel liners and remove the debris that collects there and traps moisture there. Give it a good cleaning, and add some fluid film, or wax treatment will help prevent rust in the coming years.
Man, I love the mk5, on my second. The only thing I've always found annoying is getting a quicker rack... Would be cool to see what you do about that....

Fantastic buy. Mk5 chassis are an absolute peach. Get some weight out of the interior, some polybushes and decent suspension then some aggressive geometry.
The huge downside on any fast mk5’s are the brakes too, 345mm r32 set up’s aren’t a lot of money and some fluid.
The budget could see a very capable fast road mk5.
I had one. I had it tuned. Even with decent, sticky tyres on it traction was a HUGE issue. It never got the power down properly and a Golf R would absolutely smash me for that reason. Still was a great car though.

Can you please be really clear about the Cam belt/Cam chain replacement on these cars? Are they all the same or was there a change during Mark V Golf lifetime. Cheers

I have a golf mk5 gti and it feels a bit slow when doing 0-60 it doesn't have any wheelsspin at all. I do have a fault code that is p0238. What can the problem be?
Should have brought the ep3 for 5k and spent the other 5k on turbo install imo.

When you change the tyres, find the right tyre pressure. When you change the suspension do a wheel alignment. And so on, don´t overlook the details as many others

Great start to the build. If you want to grow the channel consider collaborating with other YT channels as the algorithm feeds off this. Evil GT are also doing a 10k cupra build that a 2 part head to head would benefit from this.

Should have got something like seat Ibiza Cupra, upgrade the turbo and refresh the suspension and you'd have a rocket ship for under 7k

I hate to say it but an old Subaru WRX would have been a better Golf R competitor, remapped, exhaust and suspension could be sorted for well under 10k.. perhaps ?
You know I usually would say the same thing, but the gti engine block seems to take mods/abuse better than the WRX. I really do love Subarus tho... Maybe a V2 of this video🤔
