    The Mk5 GTi still surprises me how good it is as an everyday shopping car. Every now and then I think about replacing it with a 7, but then I look at the used values and what we'd actually gain, then pretty soon I just stop looking. The Ed30 is very nice but our daily 5dr manual standard GTi on 17's is perfect transport. When you need to move it still shocks and sometimes embarrasses much newer and more expensive cars. Also- no finance. Edit- in Romania where we live you'll struggle to find a nice condition mk5 GTi for less than 6k euros. This is a complete bargain in the UK.

      @@sparkplug964 On paper? Yes. In the real world? Absolutely not.
      I have driven several Mk7 GTIs on my local roads and i can't corner them any faster as i can with my Mk5 GTI. All the cars, including mine, got modded suspensions though so the biggest difference probably is when comparing an stock suspension Mk5 GTI vs an stock suspension Mk7 GTI since there's a massive leap in suspension development there of course.
      When both cars are on your typical coilovers though, there really isn't much in it.
      In tight first-second gear turns the variable steering rack and the locking diff from the Mk7 can become in super handy though. At the same time the steering of the Mk7 is awfully numb though whereas the Mk5 seemingly transfers the road into your hand. You could also always add an limited slip diff to the Mk5 of course.
      Something that's really annoying about the Mk7 is the stability control though. When i turn off the stability control in my Mk5 GTI and enter a corner really aggresive on the brake with additional turning the rear of that thing will absolutely swing on ya. Same goes for throttle lift off in a corner paired with additonal turning. If you do something like that in the Mk7, even with the stability control full turned off, there's always super annoying intervention which completely kills the fun of that otherwise pretty excellent chassis for me.
      The engines of the Mk7's are far superior though, no doubt. You can drive an IS38 setup, tuned to roughly 400hp, and got the same early spool as with an Mk5 GTI's K03 which of course is only capable of ~270-280hp.

    Looking forward to the restoration. I have an Ed30, which I also bought as a trade sale in 2019 with 68k for £5900 (absolute bargain in hindsight). Had a soft spot for one since being a mechanic in the VW racing cup when these were new. Done 35k miles in it since and still puts a smile on my face down any B road. Looking forward to the next episode.

    Love the Mk5, a nice project indeed.
    Not surprised the wings aren't original - I had an 06 plate Passat SE 2.0 TDi estate that had the front wings replaced under warranty by VW. Think the issue with the front wings bubbling up & rusting from within on the arch was pretty common in that era

    • @Waldreth
      @Waldreth Рік тому +2

      Yeah the issue is that they have a sponge like material in that area of the wings, probably designed to reduce rattling, but unfortunately over time the soak in water and cause these spots to rust, right at the top of the wheels on the Mk5 Golf and just next to the door on the Passat. I recently bought a 06 Passat myself and the left wing completely rusted through in this spot and I now noticed the sponge myself.

    Those wheels are the BBS VZ033 and not the OEM Pescaras, as you say. They were a good a alternative back in the day when Pescaras were notoriously hard to come by. Not only is the offset different, but the size of that wheel is 0.5inches wider than OEM. The VZ033 will poke out 13.4mm more than OEM.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Ross - I had a set of the VZ033 fitted to my old Edition 30 for track use, they were bright silver as they were bought lightly used and looked amazing, better than the silver grey originals so might go bright silver again.TBH the additional offset and width is a bonus as it looks great while still looking OEM. Sightly wider track should increase stability and traction too albeit marginally.

    The interior looks nice as the soft touch plastics have a tendency to wear. It's funny to me that you have to check for rust as I have never seen rust on even a MKIV Golf here in Australia.
    The biggest issue is the cost of timing belts and water pumps it really makes it an expensive used proposition even using an independent shop.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Рік тому

      Good point re interior, the drivers door pull by electric window switches often gets trashed but this one is mint. It had 1 doctor owner until 2021 so maybe he didn't wear a ring and was pretty careful. Do your roads get salted? Here in the winter the roads are covered in salt which is very corrosive. It dries to a dust which is OK but time it badly and be on the road when the salt is rained on and you get this hideous corrosive solution that gets everywhere. Not helped by VW sticking a foam pad in front wings of Mk4 and 5 that soaks it all up and causes the wings to rust.
      Cambelt change and water pump every 5 years is a drag for sure, luckily I can DIY and on this later Mk5 with a 2 piece cambelt cover it's not that difficult.

    Why is the thermostat faulty?
    Can you leave the engine idle at standstill for 20mins and see if it reaches >90C.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Рік тому +1

      The thermostat is faulty because it's not fully closing and therefore the radiator circuit is always open. Yes it will get to 90 at idle due to lack of air flow but as soon as you start driving it drops down which means the car is always running on choke - thermostat should only open at 80 degrees. In the past thermostats used to stick shut when they failed but thankfully VWG is now engineering them to be fail safe and stick open. You just have to read the signs and get it sorted. It's hard to fit but a relatively cheap part.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Рік тому

      Thanks for the tip, we used to replace mounts on the older Golfs all the time not so much on Mk5 and they can't last forever so makes sense a refresh will make car drive better - engine mounts are often overlooked but must have a key part in the way the car feels front shifting, to acceleration to refinement.

    • @NoName-st6zc
      @NoName-st6zc Рік тому

      @@volkswizard Yep, it's in fact quite amazing how much difference these can make, especially in terms of cabinet noises and vibrations. I mean the youngest MK5's are ~14 and the oldest ~19 year old cars. On such ages you really should replace engine mounts just for the sake of it. I in fact had a conversation with an MK7 (R, manual) enthusiast once and he said that he replaced his engine mounts when his car was just 4 years old and that even there it made a noticable difference in terms of refinement on the car.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Рік тому +1

      It wasn’t a recall, for the first 10 years it was done under warranty no quibbles of customer complained. For years 11 and 12 Vw only funded of cost of you had a good history of being exploited by your local main dealer when it came to servicing and repairs. If you sensibly used a specialist then you were on your own even though car came with a 12 not 10 year warranty - typical behaviour of VW post dieselgate making their customers suffer for their devious behaviour. Also if VW had replaced wings they’d be VW stamped which these aren’t. No bad thing as VW don’t blend paint into door so colour match rarely very good.
