How much faster is our VW Golf GTI Mk5 with these mods? | PH Project Car Pt.5

- Our Golf GTI is as grippy as it gets in the corners, but needs more grunt on the straights to match the Golf R. Time to address that...
The temptation at the start of any project is to jump straight into power mods, but doing so without at least looking into brake, tyre and suspension upgrades could be a recipe for, in the GTI’s case, armfuls of understeer. We’ve done all of that now, and have even gone to the effort of sending Cam back to school (the driving kind, that is), meaning PH Project Car is ready for a power boost! After picking up an upgraded intercooler, sports cat, induction kit, clutch and flywheel from eBay, we head to Revo for an engine remap and a run on its dyno to see how much power we’re making. The GTI produced 200hp in stock form and has likely lost a few over the last 17 years - can we break the 250hp barrier with these upgrades?

This is by far the best looking version of the Golf platform.
Should have bought a used K04 kit, s3 intercooler, vis internals and then let Rtech have at it with their k04 injectors, valves cleaned, runner flaps deleted, balance shaft deleted
Would have been Easily 360bhp
Whoever wins this car needs to get the valved walnut blasted, balance shaft free wheel and runner flap.delete to remove the major failure points of the tfsi
Yes they are.. balance shaft is a problem in fsi timming belt motors. Also F23T can be had for 600. Not sure why they didn't buy that. They had plenty of money to do it.
Is this the same situation for the edition 30 BYD engine??
Would have been cheaper : used k04 with downpipe , used s3 intercooler . Done
330 bhp
Does the GTI have forged rods?
A k03 car isn't making 330bhp 😂
@@johnday6188That's why he said used k04... The engine is more than capable.
@@marcooconnorno.
I have a mk5 gti and am planning on making a few mods. found this video really useful so thank you 👊🏻
Thanks very much! Hope we've been able to help 👊
K04 and a HPFP, and you should be at about 350hp.. well worth the money
LSD would make a ton of difference too
My mk5 made 276bhp with just a sports cat and panel filter… it’s all about the map.
What was the torque?
Good result BUT why no pre update. Dyno check to see the actual starting point?????
Loving the build!
As a Mk5 GTI Stage 1 owner who has pretty much the same mods (REVO intake, though the much cheaper and arguably “lower quality” Gravity downpipe, exhaust and intercooler), I can say one usually overlooked item is a new AC condenser.
High mileage condensers take a lot of the road debris damage over the years, fitting a new one really helped overall airflow and cooling on my car!
Maybe with just a good clean on the AC condenser and all the radiators you could have a similar result?
this series has been fantastic - loved it!
Thanks very much! Finale is just around the corner...
5th of November is a good day to be born on.. 🎉🎉 Great video good look to everyone
Interesting information from Luke about the standard airbox and inlet, also the adjustability of the ecu.
Can you give us some insights into the upgrade options that were considered and rejected before setting on the Intake, intercooler. exhaust and remap selection?
really enjoying the build, cant wait to see the gti against the golf r
Quite odd to not do dyno-run before changing all those parts. and before re-mapping (of course ideally with same temp, humidity, etc.)
Agreed.
This is amazin, if I won this beautiful GTI it would help a lot with transport for my family, GOD Bless you all.
I have mk5 gti running a s3 intercooler,milltek full system with sports cat and a k&hardpipe induction kit,stage 2 mapped to 278bhp with a stage 2 Sachs clutch.
POWER!!! Such a great car to upgrade best model be dub lost their mind 😂
Why did you dumb down the tuning aspect so much? Is this becoming a budget car wow? Ever heard of AFR ? A Used K04 turbo and LSD with HPFP as would've been better to properly finish the job. A remap, intake and sports cat is not exactly thinking out of the box.
Two till the end of the competition, fingers crossed, good luck everyone, happy Halloween and guy fawks night😊
Just had my mk5 golf GTi mapped & made 302bhp, still k03 turbo but full 3' decat exhaust, ram air intake, S3 intercooler with airtec twintercooler RS4 return valve uprated fuel pump internals r8 coil packs, free wheeling balance shaft pulley, had the inlet walnut blasted, along with the handling parts like s3 brakes all round all the suspension poly bushed & lowered suspension would love to see how well it would do against the mk8 time
How do that Militek exhaust fit into that Ebay box?
Going to be interesting to see how close you get to the R. Agree with some of the comments that using certain second hand parts would help the costs. Personally on the straights above 30mph you will give the R a run for it's money, but I think traction will be the limiting factor on a short curcuit. Looking forward to seeing the outcome. Still think your car is better looking than the R😊
I agree 100%. I prefer the styling of the mk5 over the 8. The mk8 is a great performer, but I have to root for the underdog mk5.
This is My Favourite Car Golf Gti
cars like this is why i always tell my parents not to replace our 20 year old golf 5
Re all these comments ' should have changed the turbo' , 'should have changed the engine' ect. This is just being done to obtain a little extra power from this particular car. Start swopping engines and you may as well just go out and buy the car its fitted to!
In any case 273hp is more than enough from a 2litre and plenty enough for anyone to be using on heavily congested UK roads.
Push an engine too far beyond its original hp rating and engine / clutch/ gearbox life will be vastly reduced...
[insert 'THANK YOU' meme here]
Didn't see anyone mention an engine swap, just the very common mods on the 2.0 TFSi , addressing the weak points - tuning it AND actually improving its reliability.
People have been tuning these for nearly 20 years now. The k03 turbo 'd engines are limited in many factors and what they've down is not really addressing that. The Golf R will destroy it as is.
As others have said, (and they’re quite right) you would have noticeably more gains with a simple KO4 upgrade (& it’s associated components) over everything you’ve done here. And the fact that you’re so budget conscious is even more reasons to do the KO4 upgrade that this base 147kW EA113 engine can quite easily handle. Considering the gains that an edition 30, Pirelli, or even the Mk6 R can get (all factory EA113 with KO4) once you start tuning, you are coming up way short of this engines safe tuning potential with the mods you’ve chosen. And yes I know this is not the exact same engine as the KO4 equiped cars, but a K04 & stage 2 tune won’t hurt this engine at all.
Still think it's work mentioning to your viewers that the parts and car having a $10k budget is great, but any decent mechanic is going to charge a far bit more to fit all those parts, significantly increasing the budget needed via labour costs
Why would it be in dollars, it’s the UK?
It amazes me how people have fake budgets, basically arbitrary if you have friends who will help for a few beers vs a shop that will nickel and dime you for everything. And notice how there are no setbacks that happen with every build. But as with any of these types of series, all will be finished on time, under budgets with results achieved. Counting Driver as Upgrade 😅🤣😂
Avoid the ‘friends n family plan’ .
Pay the mechanic
To calculate hp you need to calculate drive train loss and add that to whp
Like everyone said should of gone for a ko4 upgrade turbo. My old mk6 gti made 280 bhp on a stage 1 at Rtec and that was very quick for 280bhp but still wouldn’t have the legs on a Brandnew R because the turbo is tiny
I have a mk6 gti, debating if I should go for the ko4 or stay with the stock turbo. I really like the midrange of the small turbo and I'm wondering if the punch stays the same with the ko4
@@tubejorrit the punch is awesome from 2000rpm+ ive got a ko4 on the one i bought it goes well. you will need the rest of the bits like injectors to get it ready for it.
@@tubejorritYou can also do a hybrid turbo from GPopShop in Arkansas or a custom build. You will need better injectors and new mapping.
@@tubejorritk04 is better at higher speeds while k03 spools up quicker at lower rev ranges
I always thought that the stage 2+ had to have uprated HPFP internals? Or did I miss something?
I assume the mk5 GTI FSI is the same as my 6R for the fuel requirements. Stage 2+ with the k04 definitely needs hpfp.
What if you just upgrade the hpfp internals stock haha with cold air , decat, larger boost pipes, turbo muffler delete
What about the Hpfp?
Where are the wheels on those _wheel_ horsepower?
I’m looking at buying a mk5 gti and I’ve been getting quotes for a stage 2/stage 2+ map
Pretty much all of the companies I’ve spoken to have said they can achieve between 260bhp-270bhp with just a sport cat and cold air intake, and 270bhp-290bhp with an s3 intercooler and updated hpfp
I’m surprised you only managed 270bhp with all that hardware and a stage 2+ map
No wonder I walked tuned GTIs when I had a Focus ST mk2 way back in the day. 273 horsepower and 300lb/ft after all these bolt ons? You got that from a basic map only on the ST, mountune cars were easy 270bhp and 300lb/ft with the MP260 tune and air filter. Full Induction, intercooler, exhaust bolt ons and map you were 300bhp and 350lb/ft torque on the stock turbo. It melted the stock clutch mind, but there was an easy upgrade everyone did....
They're limited by the size turbo. An mk6R comes with a k04 stock, add just a tune and it's around 300hp and gobs more torque.
0:13 My Favourite Car Volkswagen GTI Golf MK5 CAR ❤🎉 0:55
Imagine what it'd be like with decent software
Literally a 15 minute Revo ad....
You forgot to show the hpfp upgrade needed for the stage2+
And the rs4 fprv
7k for a mk5 gti is wild. Could have bought one for less than half
Someone can’t comprehend simple English well.
Is a pvc delete a good idea
Is it? With catch can is it worth it
puts new exhaust parts on, doesn't show clip of new exhaust note 🧐
That's because it's an MOT failure. Showing off loud pipes will get them completely banned.
Did you forgot to include the costs to the individual upgrades? Could you add them into a pinned comment? 👍👍
Should have gone K04.
Will Pip work on my car for free too?
Are we stripping out the interior?
Looking good guys but those brake calipers look soddy get em painted properly
Sooty or shoddy??
why would you not let your audience hear what this car sounds like during the dyno testing
Only made 270bhp on a stage 2+? 🤨 mine was on 140k had a intake and decat and that was it made 271bhp and 320ft-lb with a slipping clutch at Rtech. You’ve got a cooler and a uprated clutch should be in the 290’s bhp range easy
R-tech dyno’s are lies. I bet yours is really 240bhp max.
"nice to fit" while the entire front end is off
Sooner or later the proof will be in the pudding
Don't lose your time only 1 upgrade k05 by Turbo direct SA in sud africa...best turbo for this engine..plug and play
Can i have the car please 🙏🏿
induction kit is a complete waste of money on that car.
the series would be much better if you complete the project within a month..
I love the comments. People claiming 330-360hp and totally forgot a differential 😂 This is not a car for drag races, the car needs to turn.
This mechanic clearly doesn’t know the mk5 platform mods 🤣🤣 fuel? U mean TURBO fuel pump internals
Why don't you shed some weight? Back seats out job. Should have saved some budget for some lighter front seats too.
There's still one more episode to go...
This is really not the way to do things.
You dyno to base line. Then add a part and do another until your mods are fully installed. If not, you'll not know what makes power or is just bullshit.
As usual Revo cover lines about "packages" your car isn't a Gran Turismo car. Staged packages are often just marketing.
They could've done just the downpipe and the tune to get around that short circuit with little heat soak.
what if certain parts work better together? You'd need to dyno different combinations.
@@richy69ify the base line is to do each part individually. Why? Because some things are cosmetic and don't change much in the way of power delivery. In most modern 2L turbo engines an intake will not deliver big gains if at all. Because the air flow is already optimised. Rather, having a bigger throttle body and inlet manifold will give more gains.
Hmm very sad remap
Great idea but very wordy video for me.
Buying parts of ebay 😂 supplied foc more like
YOU LIVE IN UK WHY NOT GET TRACKSLAG !!!!!
Dumb. KO4.
Disappointing, half-baked, rushed, sponsor-beholden Car Throttle rip-off.
Very obvious PistonHeads’ current owner runs the show on an every-expense-spared basis. Which is a shame.
It's stupidly low.
Bs
Boring car, no matter what you do it’s still got the lifeless styling of a golf and is too heavy.
I hate these car I don’t know why just feels cheap
