You can’t survive in the wild without it, nature doesn’t care about feelings. Elephants are in general very territorial and defense towards any animal in nature. They’re very protective of their packs and their young. However, like pretty much most animals. With exposure, they can become comfortable with humans. Once they learn it’s not a territory or survival thing, they will let their guard down.
Yes you're right they do bond to the humans I've seen so many stories of circus elephants removed from good homes and they get very distressed because they want to be with the family that have raised in with such kindness

This is terrible, those two elephants are two different species of elephants and they shouldn't be housed together. The African elephant (with tusks) is much rougher in behavior and tougher in frame than the Asian elephant (the tuskless elephant). What is simple play for the African elephant can be a brutal beating causing injury on the Asian elephant. This is why we should NOT have zoos.
